Hi,
I've searched for several hours now in these forums and on Google, with no success.
I need an app that leaves the device switched on, but powers off the screen.
In settings/power I can dim the screen, but there is no setting to dim it completely or just switch it off.
I've found screensavers that can show a blank screen, but the screen is still actually powered up, just showing a black image presumably.
I've found apps that can switch off the screen. But you have to manually click on them to switch off the screen.
Does anyone know of a screensaver that after a set interval will leave the device running, but power off the screen please?
Suspend is no good, the device must be up and running apps.
Thanks for your help.

What apps are you trying to "keep running"? The only thing that might be an issue when the screen goes into it's normal sleep mode is that audio will stop outputting, and wifi connections will suspend, but there's cabs available here to easily get around both of those (and keep them going even when the screen shuts off).
Well, it's actually to solve another long-running problem that has made me almost lose the will to live....
Alarms don't go off reliably on my TP2.
Sometimes, randomly, the alarm doesn't go off until I press the power button to wake it up. The the alarm instantly goes off. So, if I set an alarm for 6am, sometimes the phone wakes up and the alarm sounds, sometimes not. And if I switch the phone on manually sometime later, at 6:15 say, the 6am alarm sounds then.
It will work fine for a few days, then fail.
It happened on WM6.1 and still continues after upgrading to WM6.5.
I have spent countless hours googling and searching XDA-Dev. I have tried probably ten different alarm apps, with no luck. I have hard-reset various times. I have tried various recommended registry tweaks. I've tried checking the notification queue regularly for any errors. I've tried so many different suggestions, for example, never pressing the power button to turn the phone off, only ever let it hibernate automatically. Warm-resetting it each day. And the list goes on.
So, I'm experimenting with just leaving the phone on forever. But turning the screen off at night to save power / not shorten the life of the screen hardware.
Which leads me to the question about screensavers which actually power off the screen automatically after a set delay. Just like a normal screensaver on a PC.
It's hard to easily convey the frustration I have for the TP2. An excellent phone. But a phone which I can't trust to do the simplest thing: to wake me up in the morning?
It'll end up in the bin at some point very soon now.....
A suggestion
Hi,
In my opinion there must be an application, change or customisation that is leading you to those problems. My suggestion is, to perform a sync towards any computer or server to keep your contacts, then, hard reset and keep the phone with the factory defaults for a while. Then, test the phone's alarms and if all is okay, add one by one your applications and changes, testing the alarms in between. Please do that on the official ROM (whatever 6.5 or 6.1) but official one. You will flash if needed later on.
I know it will be a pain, but you will find the problem.
I am using a TP2 with stock WM6.5 ROM. I have not had yet any issue with the alarms. However, I remember to have had those kind of problems before with WM 5.0 and 6.1. There were always related to freeware applications, customisations, no official ROMs, registry hacks and restored backups done from older builds upon upgrade. The alarm bug in old WM version was also known, but I have not experienced it on newer versions.
There can be some issues with the notification database by times, but as said above, it is almost every time due to customisations.
I am not saying that we should keep our phones without applications, third party software, cooked ROMs, customisation etc. But the goal is to find out what is the reason, and believe me. It is the best if not only way.
If you post the list of applications and hacks that you have in your phone, I can try to see if there is any I could identify like guilty one, based on my own experience.
Complementary, I recommend you to install and use these two applications in attachment. They have worked for me on WM5, 6, 6.1 and 6.5 so far. They are freeware and therefore you can use them without problems.
Good luck!
Thanks for taking the time to reply. All very good advice. I'll have a go when I've got some free time again. In the meantime, has anyone come across a screensaver that actually powers off the screen please?
Thanks again.

do you turn your ringer to silent or vibrate when you go to bed? if so,
go to start/settings/clocks&alarms/more and make sure that the "sound alarms box" is checked. this will make sure that even if your phone ringers/alerts are off, your alarm will ring. also, if you charge your phone while you sleep, go to the backlight settings and uncheck the "turn screen off on ac power" box. if you cant sleep with the phone light on, set it to max dim on ac power and flip it over. i always had this issue when i had the tmobile wing.

S2U2 on this forum.
try g alarm.it worked perfect for me with tilt
I have similar Issues with my TP2;
I notice that it is more to do with HIBERNATING than screen off.
My TP2 has go to the point where allowing it to go to hibernation means Screen of Death.
Overnight I charge it and do not let the screen go off and it seems ok (so far).
Guess I will have to Hard reset and test my freeware.
Cheers
G
I had the exact same problem. When the phone goes to sleep, it is ASLEEP. I didn't use the alarm too much but the phone would never notify me when SMS arrived. I'd hit the power switch to check, and bam, three messages arrive at once, some from hours ago. Immensely frustrating, but the problem went away when I installed Energy rom.
I have an LG G Watch with 5.0.1 since a few days and I tried and sent back an identical LG G watch on 4.4W.1 a while ago and didn't experience it. Basically, I am noticing that after leaving the watch alone lying somewhere (I don't wear it at home) for some time (can't really say how long but at least an hour, I think) the display turns OFF. A single tap and it wakes up and then works "normally" until the next time...
The other G Watch with the older Wear version didn't have this behaviour so is this a feature of the latest Wear version or is it maybe an "issue"..?
I am saying this especially because I installed the Slumber app to automatically turn the display OFF while charging but realized that it's easier and more elegantly done by simply choosing the new "Theater mode" in Android Wear 5.0.1 and uninstalled the app. I don't know if what I am seeing is due to having installed Slumber but I really don't think so.
Does anybody know for sure what it is and how it exactly works..?
TIA
No replies here but several in the LG G Watch forum.
Other G Watch owners are seeing the same behaviour I described here so I can rule out that it's something which has been triggered by my having had the Slumber app installed.
One poster there says that his G Watch turns off after 30 minutes leaving it lying on a table. I am timing mine.
So based on all of those replies it seems it's a feature of the latest Android Wear. I am not calling it a bug because, except for a single reported case from a poster there with a Moto 360, it seems to never happen while wearing it, so the logic appears to be "save the battery when not in use".
Just to "investigate" it some more, may somebody else here with Wear watches from other makers please confirm you get the same behaviour on your watches (on 5.0.1)? And may you also confirm you have Ambient turned ON (i.e. the display is always ON) and state whether you have the new Tilt to wake up setting ON (i.e. the Display lights up from its dimmed state when you tilt your wrist).
My settings are Display always ON and Tilt to wake up OFF.
It would be good to have some more reports from owners of different Wear smartwatches and see if we can understand what exactly is this behaviour we are seeing...
Actually, I think this might be a good feature to keep ON in many cases but it absolutely should be an *option*!
UPDATE: Trying to time it, I think I can say (I am still trying to cover all of the different scenarios) that any event which normally wakes the display up to normal brightness (i.e. an incoming call) resets the countdown. BTW, I think the poster StuBFrost, in the other thread, is right and it's 30 minutes off the wirst with no movement, no tapping on it and no event like the ones just mentioned. "Normal" incoming notifications don't seem to reset the countdown.
Like I said, I don't think it's a bad idea in and of itself (I would use it in most cases) but they should have made it an option! And, ideally, they would let us set the time after which the display turns itself off.
I use and *strongly* prefer Android instead of limited and dumbed down Windows Phone and even worse Apple's useless crap exactly because of its customizability and powerfulness...
"Funny" thing is that from further testing, this feature doesn't kick in while on the charger (which could actually be pretty useful for most people...) LOL
ADDENDUM: the kind of events which resets the countdown to this "deep sleep" state (i.e. an incoming call) also wakes the display up from "deep sleep".
I have discovered a security problem in Android 5.0.1. I've tested it on my Nexus 4, but it might affect other devices with Andoid 5.
On a lock screen you can swipe down to bring up a menu, where you can turn off wifi/bluetooth/flashlight. The issue is: if you start tapping on a flashlight icon really fast, it will crash the graphic interface, and for a second the phone will become unlocked, and by repeating this multiple times you can get access to pretty much anything on the phone, that doesn't have additional protection.
It worked for me! I was fast enough to click an icon and open an app, then it came back to lock screen. I had a second or less. After unlocking the screen the app was effectively open.
I own the Verizon variant of the V20. I'm coming from a rooted Samsung Galaxy S5 in which I used Tasker to do a lot of things that are now (allegedly) handled natively in the V20. I've been experimenting with and researching Smart Lock and have had no success.
Thanks to Tasker, I'm used to NOT having to unlock my phone, as long as I'm connected to my WiFi, and having it automatically lock as soon as I'm out of range of my home WiFi. Smart Lock looked like it was going to be a decent replacement for this, as it could be configured based on your location, facial recognition, connection to a trusted device, etc.
However, I'm finding that Smart Lock does not work. At all. None of the options will unlock the phone. I'd continue to use my Tasker tasks and call it a day, but unfortunately, in order to unlock the phone, Secure Settings requires root in order to accomplish this.
I want my phone to be secure as I would someday like to start using Android Pay (not activated at this time). However, I don't want to have to type in my PIN when I'm at home. So, for now, as far as security goes, it's pretty much all or nothing.
I've tried various substitute apps from the Play Store that look at WiFi to unlock the phone, but they don't work, either.
Has anyone else run into this? Were you able to overcome it? If so, how did you do it?
Another oddity I noticed is that no matter what locking method I use to lock my V20, when I unlock the device, I must first swipe the screen before it will bring me to the unlock method I selected. This is my first LG phone. Is this typical behavior for these devices?
Smartlock works for me. I have the Sprint version. When I connect to my home wifi I do have to enter my password once. After that, I only have to enter the password after 4 hours of inactivity.

I have the Verizon variant as well, they disabled most of the smart lock features that you are looking for. It works for me because I have it set to unlock when connected to my smart watch. But it is still aggravating they Verizon does this stuff.

Thanks for the responses, guys! Looks like I've been able to get it working... to a point. I have Nova Launcher installed and have defined the double tap gesture to turn off the screen. Discovered that on my LG V20 with Nougat, this doesn't just turn off the screen. It locks it. If I turn off the screen using the power button, it works as it should.
This does not happen on my wife's LG V10 with Lollipop. On that device, the same software and gesture will turn off the screen, but it won't lock it.
In either case, one must still swipe to unlock the display, regardless of whether or not it's locked. Research indicates this is something Google implemented with version 5 of Android (until very recently, I was using 4.4).
So I've written to the developer of Nova Launcher to ask what, if anything, can be done. I'll post the results here when I have them.

Yes, I too grace to double tap to turn the screen on them swipe to unlock.
Sent from my LG-LS997 using XDA-Developers mobile app
I heard from the developer of Nova Launcher. Here's what he had to say:
...
Unfortunately this is a known issue in which there is a pop-up window within Nova that tells you about this and that there is a work around if you are rooted. Unfortunately there's no native work around if you're not rooted, however, you can go to the Google Play Store and purchase Screen Lock Pro (this app is not ours) and you can use it as a work around for this issue as well.
If you join the beta program, then follow these steps.
To get Screen Lock to appear in Nova Settings perform the following steps.
1) Have a device with a fingerprint scanner.
2) Set your security to use a PIN to unlock your device.
3) Set Double Tap gesture to Screen Lock.
4) Double Tap to turn off the device.
5) A popup window will appear asking you to choose one of two options.
6) Screen Lock should then show up within Nova Settings after that.
...
I opted to purchase Screen Lock Pro and configure Nova Launcher to launch the shortcut for that app when the screen is double-tapped.
All in all, this method works. There just one caveat: When you double tap and the shortcut is launched, your screen AND the second screen will both go blank for about 30 seconds (not that although there's no picture, the backlight remains on during this time). After that time, the second screen will come back. If you need to unlock your device prior to that, it will be necessary for you to press the power button twice. The first time locks the screen (evidently because Screen Lock Pro only darkens your screen for the first 30 seconds, and THEN locks it), the second time will turn the screen back on. Pressing once will display your second screen. There does not seem to be an adjustment to shorten this time interval.
Also, it's important to turn on Smart Lock and Fingerprint Sensor in the settings of Screen Lock Pro.
I've been using this as described and I can live with it.
All this being said, I'm going to request a feature enhancement from the developer of Screen Lock Pro to see if we can get that interval to be adjustable.
Oh, and I'm using my fingerprint for security, and I've found that unlocking the phone with my fingerprint means I don't have to swipe after unlocking. After several days, I've gotten used to this method and it works well for me, even away from home.
I hope this helps.
Have been looking for a long time for an app that wakes up the screen when I pick up the phone and keeps the screen on for as long as I want, but which turns off the screen when I put the phone away. No app has managed to handle Onplus 6T's aggressive battery optimization (which in itself is otherwise very efficient and good). It never helped even when I disabled battery optimization for those app's (this is necessary anyway) in OP6T's settings. Until I found KinScreen https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.teqtic.kinscreen&hl=sv . Works perfectly and very reliably.
I use the tilt function. As long as i keep the phone in an angle (15-70 degrees) the screen is always on, when I lay the phone at the table the screen turns off within seconds (encl pic with my custom settings).
Highly recommended :good:

Hey there. The app is good. But it doesn't perform the action you mentioned in the first sentence. It won't wake up the screen when I pick my phone. Or, am I missing a simple checkbox in options?

Hi, did you copied my settings (pic) and disabled battery optimization for KinScreen in OP6T's settings (that's important) ? Also try a reboot after.
I know that when I tried an combo of action in KeinScreen's own setting it seamed to be less reliable. So better stick to a single action I guess. For me, all works every time with these settings.
There is a KinScreen-thread at XDA https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2743082 If you still have problem, contact the developer there, he will probably assist you.
Good luck!
