I dropped it. It broke. Don't drop it.
More specifically, I dropped it on a rock on the corner with a flip cover on and the corner compressed and cracked the screen. It's not very study.

Isn't that obvious that would happen

Did a accidental drop(Not test) from a short height for my Moto X Play...it was fatal.( Now the phone looks like it has been run over by a truck. Front cam and partial touch is lost.

Why? Seriously.... Why would anyone care? It proves very little. Even a tiny fall, in the wrong instance, at the wrong angle on the wrong surface could break it. While a bigger fall, at the right angle and surface etc may not break it.
Same applies to basically all phones.
The solution is, don't be clumsy.

I also dropped my phone from 4 ft height... top right corner slightly cracked(very minor) but not so visible( without any case)... I think that is my luck.....

Don't drop! They are not designed to take aesthetic beating after a drop!, internal components might still work Ok

Time to invest in a wrist strap.

Seriously? Who would want to drop it unless u drop it unknowingly!!

Well I don't know, I'm not the one doing the thanking. It was a dumb post anyway.

About a month after I bought it I dropped it from pocket height and the screen shattered completely. Should have gone for the Droid Turbo 2 ..

After two weeks I dropped mine for the first time. The screen landed on some gravel and shattered, and it turns out that it is a major pain in the ass to get it fixed.
So don't drop it.

Their is no drop test but their is a water test at youtube
I recommend You buy a case because I'm pretty sure it will break from a chest hight drop due to the cheap plastic frame.

Cracks for nothing

I can tell you that this phone cracks with a lot less than a drop from chest height:
I was lying on a smooth concrete floor, phone in my pocket It slid out onto its face. Wasn't even a drop, and guess what!
Screen cracked right across.
I expected a scratch perhaps, but no this.
They market this as a kinda action phone, and judging by my own and others' experience, this is a poorly made device.
My advice to anyone who has a whole phone: Buy the strongest case you can find.
I'm really not impressed.

dudes..first rule: Buy a soft tpu transparent case with screen glass protector from ebay for 3,5 euros.Thats it.

Has Anyone Done A Nexus 4 Official Bumper Case Drop Test?

I'm normally so against drop tests. They make me cringe; especially on devices as nice as the N4. However, I've been considering getting an N4 and am concerned about the glass back (and screen); I've taunted iPhone users far too much about their cracked backs to undergo the same experience. At the same time, I like to leave my devices naked, and with the N4 being such a good looking device, I would definitely like to; that back is just stunning. The bumper case would leave the back exposed, so one problem solved. However, the question is: will it protect the back and the screen from shattering if you drop it flat? I know the bumper slightly "elevates it" from touching when you place it down, but is it enough to protect it from a square drop? Anyone have any actual insight and results?
Thanks!
The bumper will not do much to protect against drops. There's a reason why otterbox and other case makers don't save money and just make bumpers.
I have dropped mine twice so far in three weeks. Completely naked on laminate floor. Not even a scratch... Tempting fate I know but this phone is not as fragile as some would have you believe.

When I think Otter box I think construction worker. I don't anticipate ramming in to things or dropping it on to anything but a floor, nor do I see it getting wet, but I'd like to be sure that if it falls off my couch on to the living room floor that it won't bust

Thaaat's what I'm looking to here. I've just been wondering if that "elevation" is enough to protect it from a square drop on a normal floor. I've been looking for actual drop test videos and only find them without a case...seems to me it defeats the purpose...don't judge the durability of a glass phone vs. the floor, judge the durability of the case that's supposed to protect it! I just want to be able to see the back and not uglify the phone but have the comfort of knowing it'll be safe from the occasional drop

The commuter line is really not THAT huge looking... the defender however is overkill for many
Does anyone want to take one for the team and perform a official bumper drop test? Lol.
Yeah commuter is a little bulky but not as extreme as defender. Defender is overkill when it comes to protection. Commuter is a good case but doesn't provide a good enough grip for me.

I suppose...but it isn't even the size it's the fact that the back can't be seen...it isn't the bulk that's the damper it's the look..people spend a long time designing the device to look great and it's all sort of 'ruined' by the case

not sure why you would need an "official" drop test with bumper. you are looking for some kind of protection while being able not to cover the back side of the phone, which i can totally understand, since i am looking for the same.
however, since the bumper is the only way of protection which does not cover the back, what else is there to discuss? get the bumper, i am going to do the same when it is available (when will that be...???).
i am pretty sure that it goes without saying that the nexus is safer in the bumper than beeing naked when you see it falling down on the floor in slow-motion.
the bumper will definitely protect the surfaces, only if you are very unlucky it should do any harm (i.e. little stone lying on the ground, device falls exactly onto it).
greetings,
hallu
I dropped my N4 at waist level about 3 times with the bumper on (hardwood floor). Everything is fine

I haven't got a bumper, but I have a screen protector story.
Shortly 2 hours after installing a $3 screen protector, I grabbed my garage door handle while holding the Nexus. The screen came into direct contact with steel handle bar. The protector got nicked.
Since I'll be getting a bumper, I'd need full body screen protector. Should I get the Skinomi or Zagg? I don't mind the price as long as it's under $30.

im not very impressed with my skinomi since the scratches dont go away. its been a few days and these arent fading at all.
I would research it .
Just because somebody drops their phone and it don't break doesn't mean ur phone will share the same fate. Even if u have everything on ur phone that they had.

S***!
I just accidently yanked the USB cable while the phone is charging.
It fell in super-high speed from a 2 feet desk, hit a ceramic floor with one of the corners. It's still tethered to the charger, so it doesn't bounce around.
I almost had a heart attack when I hear the big "THUD!" sound.
Luckily I still has my cheap-ass S-Line TPU case on. Not a scratch! No cracks! Nexus is still in pristine condition.

Share your broken screen stories

Supposedly this is the toughest top tier phone out there right now.
I want to hear about your stories of actually damaging the phone. Haven't seen many yet, but they have to be out there. Broken screen, broken chassis, any type of permanent damage - except for screen scratches. Rock, concrete, sand - these will scratch any and all screen out there, so no need to share those!
new one comes tomorrow on the bright side
volunteer firefighter here and was about to leave my firehouse after a call when the phone slipped out of my hand and fell hitting bottom first...landed with screen up and I didn't even have to pick it up before I realized she didn't make it. the actual glass didn't break at all but underneath there's a bunch of cracks to the screen and only the top half of the screen works now
My situation doesn't quite qualify, but after just a few days I pulled the phone out of my pocket to realize it had a hairline scratch going across the middle of the screen. I'm sure it was a bit of sand or something (I don't keep anything else in that pocket), but I haven't had a screen scratch on any of the recent generations of gorilla glass so I was surprised to see it.
Just cracked my screen yesterday morning, dropped it on the driveway as I was getting out of my Jeep. Off to Motorola for $200 repair. My recommendation to everyone here: GET THE MOTOROLA INSURANCE. I wish I had known of it earlier. I think it's $89 for two years and a $39 deductible.

I don't think that's available for the Verizon Moto X. You have to do weird stuff with Asurion instead, at which point, I don't believe your replacement can be a custom Motomaker device.
No broken screen but I have dropped it 3 times onto concrete and gravel. The time it fell onto gravel I forgot I had it on my lap and it fell face down while getting out my truck. These drops have resulted in two nicks on the plastic surrounding the screen and a faint mark on the glass. Overall, I'm pretty satisfied with the durability of the X.
I had dropped it three times, all of them front facing the floor. Two on the street and one on a marble floor.
One of them it fell with the corner right onto my toe, and it slided front facing the kitchen floor. I've had a dislocation in that toe. The phone is good though.
I dropped mine from the top of a ten foot ladder bottom of phone hit and glass is cracked but still works overall 8/10 sad for breaking my awesome phone

I keep my phone in my pocket and cases thicken it too much for my liking--size was one reason I picked the X over the N5. this is the first screen I've broken too. Just bad luck and carelessness this time. I will say that this is heavier than my last phone which means more force upon impact unfortunately.

Slightly OT but if you do drop your phone try and catch it with your foot. Your natural instinct is to catch it with your hands but it will drop too quickly. So if you drop it try to catch it with your foot, I've successfully done this a few times, and it greatly reduces the speed and therefore the chances of a bad breakage.

The one Motorola Atrix2 I bought 2.5 years back is refusing to get retired and not allowing me to upgrade, its still like 2-3 months old phone despite of many a times drops
I don't say every Motorola is built like a brick, but majority of them are solidly built.

Again? Sounds to me like you need to learn to take better care of your phones. Glass is glass, and will crack if it gets dropped, regardless of the phone it's on. It all depends on where the phone hits when it falls. I've only ever dropped two phones without a case on, the Galaxy S4 Active and the Moto X. The X took a much harder fall and all that happened was a couple scratches on the metal. The S4 however, got a crack in the screen. The moral of this story? Stop dropping your phones and you wont have to worry about the screen cracking.

Glass is glass and will break, but this phone has the glass up front above the bezel and it will always take the brunt of the fall if it falls on the side, corner, front you are screwed. I dropped mine of the couch (about 18 inches) an smashed the whole screen. My M8 has taken that fall of the couch cushion dozens of times without a scratch. This phone is very delicate for falls! get motocare! or get a really good case (which defeats the whole point of a customized phone)
The thin bezel on the sides don't help. They look great but without a thicker bezel like most phones have, there is less material to absorb shock which can make the Moto X screen a bit more susceptible to cracking or even shattering. I have never dropped any cell phone I have owned but I still have a case on this guy. Oh....and don't get me wrong....I love the thin bezel on the sides of the screen.
Finally could manage to drop it from standing position and surprisingly the glass remained intact :good:
Though there are very very minute dents on the aluminium frame, two on right side corners and a very tinny one on the center edge. But they are visible only when observed closely. Thankfully not showing up from normal viewing distance.
I used to be very scared about the glass due to its exposed kind of design unlike other Motorola devices I have used where glass is usually tucked inside the framing. But the Moto X 2 also came out safely from the accident despite of 'risky' looking design.
Hope this remains same and never gets damaged till I keep it, though no intention of dropping it again.
I've dropped mine from decent heights many times and I haven't even seen a scratch. Quite surprised how good it has held up. I usually don't drop my phones but the wood back is sooo slippery.
Watch this crazy wreck test, though screen was already shattered:

[Q] Water or drop damage?

I dropped my phone face down on a partially wet floor, like a shower room floor. The drop was not that high and i picked it up and wiped it as soon as possible, now some parts of the screen don't respond. And recently, the screen was detecting different touches, as my pattern passcode was going crazy. What might be causing this problem? The drop or the maybe water getting into the phone? Would a screen replacement fix this? Thanks =( please help

The nexus 4 is NOT "kinda water resistant". I made the "mistake" of putting it in my pocket on a hot day bike ride, and my own sweat managed to seep into the ringke case and then somewhere near the goddamn digitizer, making me a victim of the infamous dead zone on the bottom of the screen. I'm so pissed off at google and lg that my next phone is going to be waterproof, even if that means giving up on the master race.

I take that with a grain of salt. I've seen so many drop test videos of so many devices. It all depends on where it lands. One g5 may have lasted 3 or 4 drops whereas other g5 will crack on the first one. If any phone lands on the glass first it will break. Of it landed on the bottom it would be different.

It was because it hit the top during the fall (probably the second contact with the ground) that it broke. You can see the nick on the top that started the crack. This is not new news. Pick any popular phone and search drop tests. You will find some that ever break and some the break right away. It happens. Yes, there is a chance it will break every time but we need more drop tests videos to prove it. But phones will break when dropped... It will happen. If you don't have insurance, case or screen protector and drop it you will have some problems.
The V10 does a good job with drops and of course the new driod turbo but most other phones will break easy.
Gorilla glass may help with scratches but it is still glass, glass will break when under force. Personally why I've never been a big fan or curved glass, I feel the glass is under stress and it provides a bigger surface of bubbled glass that will probably make contact with the ground sometime during the fall. In this case it was enough to crack. The second drop shattered more since the integrity of the screen was already broken. There is a chance if the impact hit the bottom that the glass would not have broken further.
Just my 2 cents from experience and many many glass videos and drop tests
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk
I think the corner is the worst place to drop. All kinetic energy from the drop is focused into the tiniest area Erich the disperses through the phone whereas landing on front of back or even sides absorbs the shock over a larger surface area.
FWIW, I did drop mine yesterday (day 2) from about 5ft onto tile. Hitting the corner first. Corner is scuffed but OK besides that.
Every drop is different though. Drop tests are so so unscientific.

I completely agree. It depends about height, angle, speed, material of the floor (a carpet, cement, tile is all very different from each other).
I am going to have a case regardless, but still... The last phone I actually had that could withstand many drops was my old Blackberry 8300, 8800, 9700, etc. Those were built like bricks (tons of plastic, very little glass if any at all).
Any and all glass will crack. Maybe if the surface were completely flat and the floor was completely clean that fall wouldn't shatter the screen, but if there is a grain of sand on the floor or a spiky piece of cement or ground, all the force would be focused there!
news flash - glass breaks when you drop it on a hard surface.
in other news, water is wet.

wait... so if I drop a G5 at the pool and it hits the concrete then bounces in the pool it will break the glass and get wet?!
LG needs to do something, this is an outrage

When I first got this phone I was pumped about what was under the hood and I was glad to be free of the woes of touchwiz. But the more stuff has surfaced about the scrappy build quality around this phone makes me think a flagship is not in my hand.
Found this.
Jerry speaks about how the glass is thinner than on Samsung, etc.
I don't know if this is accurate, but it may explain why the drop broke the glass, although different drops can have different results.

Get an Otterbox Defender and stop whining LOL
Nope mine fell 5" out of pocket landed on back and the screen shattered lime no tomorrow...g5 worst durability i have seen.
I have dropped this phone more in the past three weeks then all my phones ever combined. Its almost like I am trying to break it lol. The only damage to my g5 after at least eight drops one flying down my aggregate driveway is a couple chips in the paint and a small scratch, screen is still perfect. Guess I am lucky lol
Drop tests are pointless...drop your phone without protection and something breaks...period. My coworker broke (shattered screen)his Galaxy S7 (without case) dropping it out of his pocket. It doesn't matter what phone you buy, just don't plan on dropping it and buy protection.

Mine dropped a few feet and was fine, i kind of paniced as i was waiting to switch it out (and thought that extra damage might have stopped it being exchanged?) luckily it was fine.
Lol every time i see a video of people showing drop test and overall durability for some reason my pocket hurts LIKE HELL!!! lol. Come on people, you have to actually be....( Let me try to be as respecful as possible), you have to be an idiot to buy a phone (any phone) and not buy a cover before you actually use it. Sometimes i think people like to spend thousands and thousands of dollar buying smartphone just because they dont want to buy a cheap but good cover ($20-$60). Do you expect your phone to be terminator ot something? Lol. Everything manmade can be broken. And as some previous comments said, glass is glass, and the glass used in phones under no circumstances can be bullet proof lol. (there was a video a saw about an S7 been dropped from 100 fts up by using a drone, and guess what, IT WAS ALL SHATTERED AND IT DIDNT TURN ON AT ALL, what a surprise!!! (sarcasm) ). Soooooo, i motivate you to buy a good cover since day one just like i do. I dont currently own the G5 but when college let me safe a couple of bucks i will buy the cover before the LG G5 lol. And if you are able to pay $500-$900 for a phone, then you certainly are able to buy a good cover.
