Pen Gate is REAL and very very BAD - Galaxy Note5 General

Most of you probably heard about pen gate and probably dismissed it as just another stupid tactic by competitors of Samsung. I certainly thought it was total garbage and thought what kind of an idiot would insert the pen backwards. I thought, if you're that stupid you don't deserve a nice phone.
Then less than 24 hours after I bought my note 5 I inserted the pen backwards. Unlike all pervious notes, the pen can be inserted backwards with the exact same ease as inserting it the right way. There is absolutely no resistance and nothing at all to make you sense you are doing something wrong. My phone was upside down and i basically just dropped the pen in backwards and gravity just smoothly pulled it 3/4th the way down. I immediately realized what had happened and gently tried to pull the pen back up but it was very stuck. This happened without me pushing the pen in, as I mentioned it was only gravity. Long story short I managed to pull it out but now the S pen detection doesn't work and the phone always thinks my pen is detached.
I can't believe they would make a phone with such a serious flaw. You will be shocked how extremely easy it is to insert it the wrong way because there is absolutely no resistance. Now I have to return the phone which I spent a whole day setting up. Worst of all I know that this could happen again, but I have no problem returning the phone again and again. Samsung have to pay for their insanely stupid design flaw. A simple redesign of the end of the s pen would be so easy to implement and will save Samsung so much in repair costs.

Sigh.

Pen Gate is REAL - I disagree.
It's the owners foolhardiness that results in a broken pens.
I've had the Note 5 over 6 weeks & never come close to inserting the pen the wrong way round.
It's not Samsung's fault, it's yours.

I feel bad hearing people accidentally putting the pen backwards and break their Note 5, but I agree that most of the times, it's the owner's fault. You could have probably avoided breaking it if you followed the video instructions on the net, one most effective is using a straw trick.
I've been using the Note 2, 3, and 4, not once have I accidentally put them backwards. So far I have not had similar incident on my Note 5 because I'm used to having my index finger feel the pointy tip of the S-Pen before inserting it.

I never claimed it wasn't my fault for inserting the pen backwards. I'm just saying that its a very stupid design flaw where such a simple mistake results in such a catastrophe. Its not right. It will cost them a lot of money. And it really sucks when it happens to you. Less than 24 hours ago i could see my self replying just like all of you did, so I completely understand your viewpoint.

Its "REAL", I fu**ed up 2nd day of my new phone damn!

Irritated

So I ordered my 16gb Note 10.1 last week and went and picked it up yesterday afternoon. I opened the box at the store to check the "body" of the device to make sure it wasn't split along the sides and no odd creaking or anything. Everything looked good.
I get it home and discover that there's no S-Pen. It's not in the box, not in the back of the device, nowhere to be found.
The unit shipped directly from Samsung. I called the store and they said I could return it, and they'd order another one if I wanted or I could have my money back. The other option was that I could call Samsung directly and give them the low down and have them send me another S-Pen.
I chose to call Samsung and they apologized and said they'd send out an S-Pen right away. Sounds good, except that it's going to take 7 - 14 working days to arrive! Really?!?!?!
I specifically bought the Note 10.1 FOR the S-Pen and note taking capabilities. I am involved with multiple activities (my job included) that require me to take notes. This is a significant problem for me.
Yes, I know I can just buy a stylus and wait it out but it irritates me that the unit got shipped without one of the "selling-points" of the product. I understand they can't QA every single unit but come on, a CORE part of the device not being included? Really?!
Okay, I'm done ranting now.
I really like the unit and I'm sure I'll enjoy it, ONCE I get the S-Pen!

So I'm curious. If your job and activities require all this what we're you doing before you got your note? Under performing?
Not saying it's not messed up you didn't get a pen, but if you've been doing your all your job functions and activities for X time before you had a note I'm sure you'll survive another 5-7 days.
I got a note that when I pulled the pen out the little plastic tension piece inside the slot came out and then the pen would fall out if it was in the holder. Shoulda made Samsung ship it overnight.
Well THAT would irritate me too, since it´s not a 299.- $ device.
Even if they sell 20 million devices no single one with faults should pass QC.
I bought 1 SII, two SIII, 1 Note, 2 Note 10.1´s and they came all PERFECT, no broken seals, no creaking, no scratches, mechanically and by the hardware in perfect function and no faults by the software (never ever had one single firmware related crash or update probs out of the box with no single Sammy device)
In mobile electronics a defect rate of 5% or below is considered outstanding performance. The missing S-Pen is bad QC as it obviously shouldn't have shipped without it. But to put it in perspective, Samsung's sold 30MM SGS3's so it would be excellent if no more than 1.5MM had a defect. Someone who got one of the 1.5MM probably would disagree.
Is it a HUGE deal? No. Is it going to prevent me from doing my job? No. I can use pen & paper like I've been doing or I can go buy a 3rd party stylus. It's more of a convenience thing AND the fact that it SHOULD have been packaged with it. By my counting on / planning on / looking forward to being able to use the device, it just made it more of an irritation.
I completely agree that 5% being "jacked up" (hardware, software, defects, missing parts, etc) is acceptable. It would have just been better if someone else experienced the 5%.
As for Samsung products in general, never had an issue with them before. Home theater equipment, cell phones, etc.
Sorry, you're within the 5%.
The opinion that Samsung is solid in all their mobile devices is not correct at all. I also have a Samsung 7 Series slate and this thing came with its screen lifted big time as soon as I took it from the box. Getting it fixed by them was a [email protected], and this was not an isolated case. If you go to TabletPCReview.com, you'll notice that around 35% of all these slates came with the screen defected. I was in that big margin.
Being inside an even smaller margin should feel really crappy...
Now, for a solution, these tablets work with any WACOM pen, so if you have one for any other tablet or convertible then that should work flawlessly. It will no feel as nice as the one that comes with the tablet (as this one has a rubber tip and all others I know come with a hard one) but it should work the same way.

There's another solution. Many Best Buy stores stock the replacment pen. You can buy one there and keep it as a spare or return it when your missing one arrives.

That is incorrect. There may be some Wacom pens which work with the GNote 10.1 but not all. I have an Intuos 3 and the pen for it will not work on my GNote 10.1 it has no effect what so ever. With that said you can use your finger. It is surprising how presice you can be on the GNote 10.1 with your finger.
Yeah, if there was a big hole on the bottom right of my tablet where the s-pen is stored, I'd be annoyed too.
sadly, it's all academic now... my kayscase flip case really doesn't allow me to get to it, muchless see it.

I've heard indeed of some intuos and bamboo series pens not working on WACOM enabled screens. But I was referring to those that come with other tablets or convertible PCs. I've heard around that the intuos 5 pens work. I have a lil babmoo touch tablet and it doesn't work at all too.
In my last two weeks of ownership I've probably only used the pen less than 10 minutes and still love the tablet!

[Update] I'm a little frustrated with my stylus pressure levels

I am reposting this from here in this thread.
If any other artists could comment from their own observations regarding the pressure levels, that would be very appreciated!
....
I'm a little frustrated with my stylus. Some people are saying they can get theirs so sensitive it writes without actually touching the screen, but no matter what, I have to put some amount of pressure to get light touches... then it jumps in pressure too quickly for my liking. It's hard to be precise in Sketchbook Pro and I'm used to Wacom technology... I've owned Graphires (old school Bamboos), Intuoses, you name it. I'm used to being able to lay down light strokes, low pressure with low opacity and then using dropper tool to blend... for the Note 10., this is really difficult.
I adjusted the nobs, but it's not doing any good. Does the range or effect change per person? I'm thinking of actually calling Samsung and seeing if I can get another stylus out of them to try. This is driving me bonkers. Besides that, everything is perfect. For sketching it is fine, but that's just for sketching... painting or rendering is a pain because of this pressure issue.
It would be so helpful if there was a diagnostic tool that reported back the numbers that the pen was sending. There is on the actual Wacom tablets themselves, you can see how much pressure is applied and diagnose accordingly. I've had faulty pens before that I've had exchanged and it's fixed the issue.
I changed the nib too and that seemed to help, but I think the nib settled and it's still difficult to get steady light pressure without wrist strain.
I don't expect Intuos quality, but I expect something relatively close to a Bamboo level. Maybe not the same responsiveness,... But if it boasts 1024 pressure levels, it'd be nice to actually use those levels. I've used multiple apps... S-note, LayerPaint, LectureNotes, Sketchbook Pro... you name it. Still happy with the tablet, it just significantly lowers what I can realistically achieve art wise on it.... maybe it's just my pen. I am hoping it's my pen.
EDIT: BTW, when you guys mention "offset", are you talking about pressure threshold? Meaning, the amount of pressure needed to actually get a line for example?
UPDATE:
Well after my original post (pasted below), I went ahead and called Samsung CS... the first guy got my hopes up when he told me they would replace it. However, he then sent me to the 'executive customer dept' who took an half an hour on hold to finally tell me I would have to send in the whole unit. I'm not going to do that, because I'm happy with the tablet and it's stupid to send it back just for the pen. Really annoying.
So now I'm going to go actually buy a replacement...
Actually while I was sitting on the phone, I pulled off the switch to check my settings real quick and noticed the second nob had come loose!! I was like holy crap... but the pen works the same way as before so far. So I guess maybe that nob doesn't do anything after all!
I will probably go by Best Buy to get a replacement since they claim they have it in store. I'm a little irritated it has come to this, but if I get it replaced and it works like a charm, I'll be a happy camper.
Anyway, Wacom is releasing another stylus for the tab called "Bamboo Stylus Feel" sometime in a week, but I get the feeling from the vague and upbeat descriptions that it doesn't change the functionality or fluidity or pressure level situation at all.
We really need a diagnostic tool
On another not necessarily related note, I had gotten an email from Samsung when I registered my Note 10 for 50% off accessories... I was going to order straight through them but come to find out it for "mobile" accessories only. Now why would they send me a coupon for mobile accessories to my Wifi tablet???? This is the second time I've registered a wifi tablet with them in past few months and I didn't receive an email then. Odd. So getting it through BBY...
I'm not an artist and don't know much about how the pen works but the tablet is considered mobile. That coupon code works for the tablet accessories.

You would think, but it doesn't take the code in the promotional code box and I have until January 19th.
When I clicked the link within the email to the 'store', it took me to the cell phone accessories store. The pen listed there only fits Note I and Note II not the 10.1.

I would like to see some art screen shots that you have done with the note 10.1, if you dont mind. at first i didnt like the sensitivity, untill i found that i could switch writing utensils, and the size of the the point and now i am pretty happy. I used to draw all the time, but havnt done it in a long time, but i thought it had done pretty well and with the different pressures and colors i dont think their should be any problem in creating a masterpiece.

It's a 20-25 minute sketch from life. My problem is 'blending'. I'm used to Photoshop method where you can spam dropper tool to get 'midtones' and blend by going over areas with very light strokes. The problem is, you really need to apply low pressure consistently... This was done in Layerpaint with pencil brush, but it doesn't go full opacity (probably more like 70%), but I have the issue in Sketchbook Pro too. Keeping that in mind, I don't generally work 'vector style' with clean lines, fills, gradients and such... I work very painterly.
I don't expect it to be perfect, but I kinda figured it should at least be doable if the pressure works the way it should. This is the level of work I can achieve in Photoshop for example... but again, I don't really expect it to compare. I just expect the pressure sensitivity to actually be useful for something but sketches. For example, in PS, I don't adjust opacity at all because I can reliably rely on pressure... and use dropper tool to get the midtones to continue 'rendering'
Obviously as you can see in the first image, I am having problems getting steady light pressure because all the strokes are so contrasted.
Basically with the pen I have now, I have to push a bit to even get pressure (even after infinitely adjusting both nobs to no avail), and then it jumps relatively quickly to full pressure... there's not much room to adjust.
I'm seeing the same thing. When I put pressure down and then let up to make a thinner line it will just stop writing completely until I place quite a bit more pressure. I too felt this was a problem. Could it be the tablet because I would hate to have to return mine. Everything else works perfectly. There are no scratches, dead pixels, etc. I've had to return Samsung products before because of Quality Control issues and it's hard to get a "perfect" device from them so I hope it's just the pen I'd have to replace.

Even after trying the nob job (haha!) from this thread?
Yeah, that's part of why I didn't want to send in my tablet. It works PERFECT! Why send in a perfectly working tablet that is barely a month old??? I've had a faulty pen from Wacom before, but it was with Intuos and it was a $100 pen... I used it for 8 months to some wrist strain before I finally figured out it was defective. It had the same issue as this s-pen, jumping levels too quickly. However, you could adjust the threshold/pressure curve on that, but it still felt 'faulty'...
It really would've helped to have a serious tool which tells you what pressure levels you are achieving when you are trying to diagnose a pen problem like this....

I haven't tried that yet but I will give it a try and let you know how it worked. If you get a replacement pen could you post here if it works any different?
I thought I remember seeing a thread in the Themes and Apps section about someone who made an app to reset the sensitivity or something like that on the s-pen.
EDIT: I took the button off and tried to turn the left nob and now my pen doesn't work at all. The hover works. It sees the air view but the pen doesn't write or move the screens or anything.
EDIT 2: It seems that I had the sensitivity extremely low so that I had to press very hard to get it to work. At the best sensitivity setting, it's still about the same as it was before. It looks like there are only a couple different pressure settings. It doesn't matter which way you turn the knob as someone said in the other thread. It's where you position it. I really can't decide if I should return the tablet. I would HATE to get one with a dead pixel or any other problems like overheating etc. I've returned so many things to Best Buy for QC issues that they flagged me lol. So if I return this one and get one with more problems than just the s-pen then I don't think I'd be able to exchange anymore. My choices are take the chance and return it hoping that it's the tablet causing the pressure problems, hope they can just replace the s-pen, or stick with what I have. I'm not really an artist so its not THAT important technically but I like to know that my stuff I buy is working perfectly with no problems. Just knowing something is wrong with it can drive me nuts. I have OCD, seriously lol.
I have noticed on my tablet that the left side of the screen has a faint greenish tint to it where as the other side doesn't. It's barely noticeable but being that I have OCD the way I do, I notice everything. Not sure if that is enough to help me decide to return it or not. I have until Jan. 24. What would you do?? lol

See, I can't get mine to do that lol... Try turning the nob back the other direction, it is based off screw position. (it also helps to take photos of the actual nob placements).
And yes, I will post an update. I'm going to BBY in the morning since it claims several nearby have it in stock... I find it surprising they carry it on hand.

It is likely the pen because the numbers come out from the springy part attached to a sensor. The numbers are sent from the pen to the tab wirelessly and that's how it the pressure is deduced. There is usually a threshold that it reaches before it determines that the pen will start "writing". This is normally in the software with the PC tablets, but in this case I think it's based off the nob underneath the switch people have been saying adjusts the "sensitivity". That's just an educated guess though.
Just an example of how Wacom pens work: http://www.tablet4u.co.uk/techinfo.html

So it actually could be the tablet then? Maybe it's not processing the correct reading from the pen.
I know for me the sensitvity was reduced when I put a screen protector on. I couldn't stand it, so I took it off. If you're using a screen protector I would suggest trying it without and see if it improves the pen's sensitivity. It did for me.
Another thing was I went in and adjusted the pen settings in the tablet. If memory serves me right, you need to have the keyboard set for handwriting and then go into settings and make the adjustments there. It's been some months since I did this, but I know there is a thread somewhere that shows the setting adjustments.
Also, in SketchBook Pro, go in to settings and check to see if pressure sensitivity is on. I think it was turned off by default when I installed it and I had to turn it on.
Lastly, check to make sure you're not accidentally pushing the button on the pen when you're using it. I know I was doing that and making the pen act up. Now that I know that, I turn my pen so I don't accidentally push the button with my finger.

sent from my jelly bean infused note 10.1
in the UK tesco have the s-pen for note 10.1 with eraser in store now :good:
Picked up the pen this morning from BBY Called them this morning to put it on hold. They took the SKU and said they had 2 in stock and then put one on hold for me at the store-pick-up desk. I tested it in the car. So far so good!
I haven't adjusted it or anything. I am just taking the time to get used to it being different for now. I played with the floor model too to check for a difference and it was so sensitive it would started writing/putting pressure at exactly the moment you touch the glass with the nib... which is what I expected you could adjust it to be able to basically do. The one I had previously, you had to push nib down a bit to start getting pressure. This was after adjusting the screws underneath the switch.
The one I was fortunate to find at BBY is a little less sensitive than that one, but it's still better than the one that came with my tablet. It's the exact same pen, fits in the slot fine and everything and you can't tell the difference otherwise....

So, $30 spent, but at least I have a pen that as far as I can tell works the way it should! Will need to spend some time with it and perhaps later I adjust it... right now I'm just glad it's working!
I will write here later if anything changes.

Thanks for the update. I'm glad to hear it was just the pen and not the tablet. I'm an idiot. I didn't even think that it could be the screen protector causing this issue but I'm afraid to take it off and use the s pen on the glass for fear of scratches.

Home button durability.. lets talk..

So, like many, i have jumped on the S6 bandwagon, and am rather enjoying it so far (so much so that i haven't even bothered with bootloader or root yet). And while over the few days so far the glass is great (i would hope so.. sheesh), i have noticed some scratches already on the home button. Now, being that no phone will ever stay perfect, i accept that wear and tear will happen, but i was surprised to see it this early.
Certainly, i am happy enough with the phone (non scratched glass, good battery life (with bloat disabled), etc), but am curious to see if i am alone in this, or others have the same issue.
And more to that - will the scratches become a problem for the fingerprint reader (something i do enjoy using, and would like to keep doing so)? Perhaps some voices of experience can bring some wizdom..

Mine had scratches right out of the box and I scratched it further thinking there is a protective film over it since it looked like it had one. Its definitely a concern in the long run though I was able to get rid of the scratches by using toothpaste. My home button also wobbles a bit vertically and if I tap it gently in the left corner, it creates a clicky noise. The biggest concern for me right now is the pink tint on my s6's screen on the bottom half and left side. I can exchange but may end up getting the same/worse unit since most of the people who faced this issue ended up getting worse/similar units.
Will the finger print scanner stop working after many scratches is something we can only guess at the moment.
What's it made of?
The home button had the same vulnerability on the Note 4 and Note Edge, but it never affected the fingerprint reader. Micro scratches galore, but nothing too glaring and didn't affect the functionality.
Well, i certainly will agree right now, what i see is micro, and has had no impact on the scanning (4 fingers registered, no issue at all). I am a little disappointed that with the excellent build otherwise exhibited, something people will use most may be the most prone to scratches; but i also accept that that sensor may not work with more durable materials.
Still, a little more reassuring that the Note 4 is similar and should be ok..
I've noticed some minor scratches too on my home button. I'm not sure whether they were there out of the box as I didn't think to look closely at the time.
I imagine you could take a cheap plastic/PET type screen protector and cut out an oval shape and put it on the button. I'm not sure whether that would change the fingerprint recognition or not since I don't know how those scanners work. It would be easy to test though even before trying to cut the shape out.

any chance the micro scratches were there out of the box? i've had mine since April 1st and don't see any scratches...yet.

Actually, yes, it is quite possible, as i noted them just about the second day i had it, and was shocked to see them. I may not have the smoothest thumbs, but the scratches went all the way across, which is also odd.
So far, no real issues, but it was surprising to see (part of me wrongly assumed the button was also glass).

honestly it should be glass. guess they're still working on premium quality 100%
it may be more likely that they were there out of box. i've tried scratching mine with my nail and no dice.
they have some assembly line and packing kinks to work out clearly. my device thankfully came unscathed but the plastic wrap that covered the phone looked like someone had pulled it back on with their finger/nail - there were 3 little indentions on it.
So, i hope its not related, but i have had my phone now fail to read my fingerprint a few times, and pop up a notice saying there was a failure, and if it keeps happening, reboot the phone. A reboot (or even manual unlock) seems to work, but i am hoping its not a sign of things to come...
No micro-scratches here yet....
I've confessions to make: I'm obsessed with physical buttons wearing off! The first app I installed is "pie control", which is something I really got accustomed to and find more practical than using home button and recent button, incidentally this saves a lot of click on the home button. I've been using for a while even an accessibility feature that let you wake up the phone by waving in front of it, to be honest I don't use much this one. Then again I use Nova Launcher and I set up a shortcut to lock the phone double tapping the display. I know I'm way overcaring about this, on the other hand I just dismissed my old S3 that was still practically perfect even after almost 3 years of usage.

Let me recommend you something what I personally did after finding micro scratches right out of the box. Use an ear bud (used to clean ear) and a very small amount of toothpaste. Apply a little paste on the bud and gently rub the home button for a min or so. Once done, wipe it from a damp cloth and also taking out bits an pieces of the paste that may have got around the gaps.
I was completely able to remove micro scratches doing the above and hope it helps you too. People have also used the above method to clean their camera lenses with great effect. Look out for a thread under the Xperia Z3 compact page where people complaint of having scratches on their camera lens after using the phone for a while.
Note - Dont rub too hard on the home button. It wont harm but will take away the gloss from the button leaving it looking matte.

The button is actually metal, but the substrate for the sensor (on top) is of a type of polymer film- like plastic? I'll post a source link when I get a chance. Thx
See link:
It's definitely not durable

I'll give it a try tonight the toothpaste and the q-tips .... hope it works... i'll try to be as gentle as possible and go up from there ... thanks for the info man. Same problem here. Came, I believe scratched from the box, had a scratch on it from the first day and it went up from there. Dunno what is wrong with samsung they always have to screw up somehow.

Yeah... I do believe they messed up this time.

They decided to use a non-durable substrate. The above article explains why. Good luck!

This is just conjecture. While it may very well be true, the author doesn't give any evidence or references to back this claim. For all we know, Samsung may have chosen plastic simply because it was cheaper.
when the iPhone 5S was launched, a few people expressed concerns that the sort of CMOS scanner they were using tends to deteriorate over time. This, thankfully, hasn't proven to be the case; however I think that this deterioration is mitigated by an exceptionally strong sapphire glass coating on the 5S's home button - and now on the 6 and 6 Plus.
I have concerns for the durability of the S6 home button too - not for the scratches (which mine also exhibited after only 6 days of careful use), but for the likelihood of the sensor itself wearing out over time, as they are supposedly prone to doing. If Samsung have indeed skimped on the protection this home button requires for long-term durability then people will be in for a nasty shock further down the line when they can no longer use the fingerprint recognition, or when it deteriorates to the point of being useless. For those who recommend using toothpaste to clean the scratches out, I would suggest that this is a terrible idea - clearly scratches are going to reappear anyway, and taking some of the already weedy protection away from the fingerprint scanner with a micro abrasive surely can't be a good idea.
I'm really happy with the S6 but the home button is a big concern for me. I simply don't think it's as high quality as the ones Apple use. My 6 day old S6 has been exchanged by the store for a new device as the home button not only rattled but didn't work at all on the left side unless it was pressed with a degree of weight. My replacement still jiggles a tiny but but is at least better.
To me this is a bigger issue than 'Sensorgate', which is just a load of rubbish as far as I'm concerned.

You do make some really good points… When you returned your phone for exchange, was it a big pain in the ass? Did they hint that they do an exception for you?
I've just become very wary about returns, exchanges because I've been screwed before on exchanges and being stuck with a mediocre device.
Anyways, I am very surprised that not too many complaints about the sensor has come up on the web searches so far.
I could demonstrate that the home button wouldn't work on the left side unless I pressed it hard. They were able to replicate it themselves so it wasn't too much of an issue. I struggle to deal with high street stores in matters of poor quality control though as they tend to take the stance of 'I can't see anything...it's not really an issue to me'. One thing I miss when I move away from Apple products - not to sound like a fanboy - is that I feel I can trust that they will rectify any little annoyances I have.
One thing I feel confident in saying with absolute certainty is that the home button on the Galaxy S6 is not even close to the quality of Touch ID. It works, and it works well; but the feel it gives when you click it, the overall travel and the cheap plastic feel is a giveaway. Samsung are nearly up to iPhone standards with this device in terms of quality control but this button is its Achilles heel - they kind of cheaped out.

Beware, faulty Spen. *Broken*

I use the Spen frequently and today while ejecting it out from the phone the top shot out like a bullet and the spring went flying, God knows where. and I look in my lap and have the top piece laying there. hoping to get a straight across replacement with tmo.
While everyone was worried about the backwards insertion thing, this was my concern. How long on average for heavy users until that clicky mechanism just breaks from normal use?
#pengate continues
maybe they should have gone with 7000 series aluminum.
(Sent from another Galaxy via Tapatalk)
Is it known for the clicky mechanism on ink pens to break? I would assume the same for the SPen.

Sorry for the late response, got the replacement phone no issues and then had to set it all back up.
Anyway, I use it several times a day. I'm a doodler / love to sketch, I got it on launch day so exactly 1 week.
The two pieces are IMO cheaply put together. A simple dimple/bump locking mechanism plus what I assume is a bit of adhesive. That is what failed causing the spring to break it all loose and go flying. The actual pen it's self was still in the phone. Luckily I was able to tap the phone and retrieve it. Had I of been able to locate the spring I might have fixed it myself but I'm glad I went into tmo store.
Mine did the exact same thing. I found the spring though and super glued it back together. Lovely quality

Samsung builds the most premium note to date while sacrificing the spen. Seriously the Note 4 as well as note 10.1 are far more durable

How being given a OnePlus 2 phone made me love my Note 4 more than ever.

I'm no hardware guru, but have a minor league rep among my friends for being able to resurrect computers and phones. The other day, a friend handling his company's phone needs handed me a OnePlus 2, made in China back in 2015 and which caused quite a buzz as "The Flagship Killer." "Do what you can... it's all yours," he said. Hmm.
The problem with my new problem phone remains undiagnosed, though the symptoms are many spontaneous reboots and sometimes just downright lock-ups with black screen. Now... what would *you* do with your Samsung Note 4 if you got a lock-up? I'll answer that rhetorical question. I'd open up the back of the phone (about five seconds) pop out the battery, pop it back in (about 3 seconds), close up the back and hit the on button. And nearly always, it reboots happily.
You just don't know how good you have it until you are faced with this same task holding a OnePlus2 (or any OnePlus if I understand right). First, off comes the back of the phone. Five seconds, cool. BUT... what is this? A second "inner" back, this one with - count 'em - 18 tiny phillips head screws. Oh, and six of them have tiny rubber plugs over the top of 'em. And oh, don't forget to remove the dual sim card holder before you pull that baby off. And when you unscrew that little last screw with the white paper top on it? You *just voided your warranty*. (Though the 2015 date on these makes that unimportant now.)
A heck of a lot longer than what I described with the Note 4 in this situation. Hold your Note 4 in your hand and be glad.... be very glad.
But now comes the battery. It isn't easily removable (wedged tightly into its seat and taped beneath with some infernal stuff). But the good news, unless you're replacing it, is this: Unplug it, replug it. A little square plug that though odd can be undone with the edge of a finger nail. Plug it back in. And let's say the phone reboots with out trouble.
Great! So now I put the back(s) on again, after all those screws... only to have the phone suddenly lock up again. And not start. With any button combination.
The only Note 4 I've seen do that consistently is one smitten with the dreaded emmc memory errors. But the OnePlus community forums are filled with people trying to figure out how to reboot their phones after such mysterious shut-downs. Half of the "answers" look suspiciously like voodoo. Look, the OnePlus2 is a year newer than the Note 4, and it does have a really nice fingerprint pad right on the front. And it works great (I did get to use it for a while before it once again shut off). But did I mention that though it can run two sim cards, neither one will allow for a micro-sd card? Look again at your lowly Note 4, and be glad.
I am *really* loving my Samsung Note 4 right now. And whatever comes in the future, any phone I use must have a removable battery, not to mention the extra micro-sd slot. The OnePlus 2? Pretty much, because of the insane battery design, this is how *not* to engineer a phone. (I won't diss the not so great screen... because I have a Note 4 with a great screen and mocking others without such a nice screen just wouldn't be nice.)
So... what have we learned?
Never buy a phone without an easily removable battery.
Never buy a phone that restarts constantly, in part because of (see above line).
And....
Look again at your Note 4, which you own. Yes, you made that decision. You could have had a OnePlus2. Yikes! And good job!!
I had already made a clear decision never to buy a phone with a non-replaceable battery but manufacturers have been deliberately making this extremely difficult and our options are becoming much more limited. The market has not been driven by what consumers demand but rather by what manufacturers dictate.
