so is it not safe to root? - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So i've been bouncing around here after recently getting my 6p in the mail, and it seems like some are wary of rooting until the marshmallow source drops. Should I hold off on root until such a time? I see root is out and custom kernels are out in the wild that require it, so would it be safer for me to fight the temptation now?

There isn't a reason to wait or worry unless you want to fabricate one.

If you use systemless root Android Pay still works. If you use regular root, some people have had success with Android Pay by disabling SU before adding a card.

What to expect after rooting

Hello,
I don't know if this has already been asked, couldn't find the answer.
I received my nexus 7 last wed from Google, no flaws so far.
Using the OTG USB and media importer app I am able to stream or import my music n videos
from my flash disk.
I am planning to root it to get SU access. My inquire is what will I lose after rooting?
Will I still get access to Google Play contents?
Thanks
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda app-developers app
As far as I know, you don't lose anything. You still have the same access to everything as you do un-rooted.
Google don't mind none about the rooting, just like I know you won't mind none my vernacular

Tennis Racket
Your Nexus 7 will no loger waddle like it has a tennis racket stuck up it's rear and will achieve a slight, albeit noticeable, hint of swagger. At least that's what happened to mine in the 18 minutes it took to unpack, calm my nerves and root.

[Q] Should I root my Nexus 7?

Hi there. I've had my Nexus 7 for 1 1/2 month and I want to get more out of it. I'm currently running stock 4.2.1. I'm a little nervous because this is my first tablet, although I'm running cm10 on my phone. Is rooting worth it or should I wait a while?:highfive:
haven't you already waited for a while?
I had mine for Christmas just make sure u have a suitable recovery eg clockwork mod and use the right tools there is tons like nexus 7 toolkit I used it is simple even for first timers plus Google make it solo easy. Do it then get stick mount and expand our memory.
PS many people say it affects performance.
Bull sh**

Yeah I rooted mine right away, but honestly I should of waited, I've tried a lot custom ROMs out there and all of them had give me bad performance/battery life maybe it could be my nexus 7 its self or 4.2.1 but I feel that i should of just waited wait till the nexus 7 development community gets better, not to take away from any developer here!
Via Galaxy Nexus [LTE]
i find no probs with using the stock rom plus CM10 seems to stay in a bootloop so did try that but reflashed back to stock ROM

I think it's about time you unlock the bootloader (beware: a data wipe is then imminent), and then root it and give it a taste of some lovely CM10.1!
I recently got an N7 myself and I thought the stock rom was snappy. Then I unlocked the bootloader, rooted it, flashed latest CWM and flashed CM10.1 and it's amazing!
Got mine after boxing day before it was fully charged boot loader was unlocked and rooted. Am sticking to stock at the mo with bricked kernel

NEVER NEVER NEVER root your device.
Thanks!
I used the toolkit last night and it worked very good. Flashed cm10.1 and all but I didn't like it. Now i'm back on stock 4.2.1. Maybe i'll install a custom rom later on. Thanks for you're answer and HAPPY NEW YEAR!!:highfive:
Like the OP, I've already got a rooted phone (Nexus S 4G running CM10.1). But I've come to doubt the benefit of rooting/flashing. My wife's stock Nexus S seems to run better than mine. That said, she barely uses the thing and has installed maybe 5 apps in 18 months of ownership, so it's not apples to apples.
I got my Nexus 7 last week and I haven't encountered a compelling reason to root it yet. Since it's a Nexus, the bloatware argument is moot. I do wish I could install some Polytonic Greek fonts, but that's hardly a reason to void the warranty. So for me, it's staying stock (for now...)
I've had my nexus for about 3 months now and I don't think I'll be rooting it. I just want my tablet to work and not have to screw with flashing, updating, etc. I'll stick to that stuff on my sgs3. I play games on my nexus and don't want to have to worry about losing data. I know there are backup apps but it's still a hassle and I've had trouble before.

I rooted mine the same day I got it, you can always lock it back up if you need to but I have no regrets rooting ad away is reason enough to root in my book
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 2
Rooting and unlocking your device will not do any harm. I have rooted all of my devices and through the years never had a single problem. And if you are afraid you should know that any time you can relock the boot loader, unroot your phone and return back to stock so give it a shot

This phone is too good at it makes me bored....

So I sit here bored on a Thursday night and think to myself 'oh I'll just flash a ROM on my moto x' then I realize that if I flash a ROM I will actually lose features that I like instead of gain them. I used to spend a few hours a week flashing Roms but now I don't want to. So what are all the other flash-a-holics doing with their free time now?

Get a job? A hobby other than flashing Roms? A girlfriend ? Play a sport ? Etc etc etc
MOTO X GSM DEV
Not having to flash ROMs is the reason I got the Moto X.
get root, install xposed installer, install motoxposed and other great modules, enjoy the near stock experience with all the benefits of a good rom.
Buy a Nexus 5 to flash on those nights! I may have retired my GNex but its still got some development life yet!

Yo can try installing Kit Kat!!!
no need to flash any custom rom at least while when they port all unique features.
Haha that's my goal this weekend. To try getting a 4.4 ROM to work on the sprint version. Last night I spent the night installing Ubuntu and everything I need to start building roms

I will say that the Moto X is such a clean stable phone in which I don't have to require much change. The changes I want are simple and easily handled by using the XPosed Installer. This phone has truly cured my need to tweak and mod. It gets great battery life without the need for custom kernels or governors.
I do still have a Nexus 7 (2013) which I am using to enjoy KitKat on, but now I never have to worry about my phone crashing, or bugging out.

It is refreshing, not having to constantly tinker with my phone. I basically run my business from my phone... Can't count how many times a accidentally lost texts, photos, app data etc... Because I was flashing in a hurry or because of a bad nandroid backup. Those days are gone... And I don't miss it.

Yeah I don't think there is a way yet. I hope the verizon version sells well. I got mine for $99 on contract. I felt like that was a deal. I like it a lot. Of course, that crazy note 12 caught my attention with it ridiculous screen but $750 on contract? No way.
This thing for $99 is a great deal. Your paying the retail off over two years and also get 4G. I am happy as hell with this tablet.

How's the battery life? My galaxy 7.7 had terrible battery life even in airplane mode. Yes I mean the VZW 7.7. I won't but carrier tablets anymore since the wifi models get all the community support.

Battery life has been great for me so far. Also, FWIW, got mine for $75 shipped overnight. I'm a Business customer and the rep jumped through hoops for me. How could I pass it up?
Its great. 3+ hours screen time off charger for 17.5 and have 46% left.

Ok, I ran an Antutu Benchmark on my new VZW LG G Pad 8.3 and the result is 19327.
That is lower than a Sony Xperia Z, Note 2, HTC One and very nearly the same perfomance as a Galaxy S3. Games hitch and falter and navigating between homescreens is not fluid.
Is this really how this tablet is supposed to perform? From the reviews, I expected it to be more fluid than a Nexus 7.

I tested about the same as you. My note 2 scores higher. The G pad seems really jerky when navigating around.

I havent tried yet because I just figured out how to get adb to connect today. You dont want to be on mtp but under pc connection you want to tick internet and then modem and NOT mtp to get adb access to the VZW LTE edition of the G Pad

I spent 2 hours yesterday trying to get ADB detected--changing drivers 20 times, etc. Your advice worked great!!.
All of my other devices are rooted, so I'm i withdrawal on this VZW Gpad. The guy at Verizon laughed when I told him what a nice device it was if it weren't for the nearly 100 apps running on it. He said that means we that many partners paying us for the installs.
I have tried the following with no luck:
kingo root_gpad.zip package: initially gave an error saying cannot mount as read-write. it did copy and install superuser, but when running superuser it gave an error updating binary.
adb reboot bootloader reboots with the android error logo, but volume up+power or volume down+power did not bring up any menu options http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2575783
Reeeaaallly hoping this gets a root soon. I think it can really be improved with a tiny little overclock and clean 4.4.
I look forward to seeing some dev action (and donating to them, of course) for our new LG-VK810's. My GF surprised me with one of these this past weekend and it's the perfect size between my Nexus 7 2013 and my HP Touchpad.
I just picked up my VZW LG G PAD today and immediately came home ready to root. I see no method is yet available for our variant yet? Does anyone know of any method currently available to root yet?

rooted vk810
I just rooted my Verizon LG G Pad8.3 vk810 today with Kingo root
To get the proper de bugging make sure u select the ethernet selection and not modem..
Wouldnt detect my device under modem....but did when on ethernet..
But cant install a custom recovery....tried TWRP and CWM..
Hope someone gets a hack for the recovery soon
---------- Post added at 09:14 PM ---------- Previous post was at 09:10 PM ----------
Should i not have my device Rooted with This method?
Or should i unroot and wait for a root for this vk810?

I used Kingo Root also and according to Root Ckecker and ES File Explorer I am indeed rooted but according to the Kingo Application everytime I connect it still says i'm not rooted and click to begin root process. Another thing is I was connected through modem and not ethernet to get Kingo to run.
It says you're rooted...but can you remove bloat using titanium backup...if we can do that I'll be happy for a long while until we get other options.
Sent from my LG-D802 using xda app-developers app
The Kingo root method from my understanding and research is controversial within the script it contains when applying root to your device. I personally am staying away from it until an alternative method is made available to properly root the VZW edition of the LG G PAD. As badly as I am ready to root my tablet and start flashing away, I'm remaining cautiously optimistic with that particular method.

You can read the other several threads in the General section to answer your question. FYI this is in the wrong section.
I think you can go ahead. i am already using this as my daily driver. And its quiet nice.
With my my day to day use i cannot tell that it is beta its already in a better state
I installed it within days of receiving my 6P. There are a couple bugs obviously. Some apps won't run but nothing too bad. Some display issues but overall I'm happy. Only thing I miss is root

Well may be. This is my first non-Samsung phone in a while. To prove it I am still not sure whether there is a fuse like Knox and the 6P. kind of scared to unlock and route due to the pain I had with the note 5 and not being able to use Samsung pay four Google pay … Or warranty I guess LOL

Yes, it is available
I ran it for about a day or so, and to be honest it was stable for the most part but sluggish in some areas and some of the apps I use regularly started crashing and such. But it's definitely something I looking forward to once it's fully released/stable
