Project Fi: How long to port Google voice number ? - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I got my phone yesterday and initiated the porting of my Google voice number to project fi. That is the option I had selected when I ordered the phone. However it's been over 24 hours and the porting is still not done yet. I know Google's website says 24 hours to 5 days but just wondering how long did it actually take you guys to have your Google voice number ported. Thanks
Sent from my Nexus 6P using Tapatalk

I'm in the same point with my carrier #. It's been over 24 hours and still waiting. Google mentioned that it could take up to 48 hrs.

I ported my T- mobile cell number to Fi and it only took around 2 hours and full texting in 3 hours.

Dang!
Edit: I went from scheduled to pending now. Woohoo!

I'm in a different kind of hell. My AT&T contract doesn't run out until Nov 20th. They wanted an extra $95 to break the contract and let me transfer my current number to my new phone (6P). So I decided I'd just get a new number for now. I had to call a Fi rep, and explain that I had originally signed up for a number transfer, and he was able to get me a new number right away.
I might call google after the 20th and see if they can get that number back from AT&T for a small fee.

you may want to port your number to a cheep pre-pay just to save it until you can port it to Fi.

yeah, it was fast, vary fast and it was kinda cool to. I had my T- mobile sims card in my N5 and my new Fi sims in my 6P. The phone number came over first and then I was texting on my N5 and for about 5 minutes I was getting text on both phones and then only the 6P. Fi has been great for me, I can now get LTE in places that I couldn’t get with just T-Mobile.

I'm a n00b..When I copied over my account number. I left a colon in there from my copy/paste. No wonder it was in limbo.
2nd Edit: I forgot to get the transfer going on the Fi App...lol. Took literately 60 seconds.

I can't. AT&T would charge me $95 for early termination if I did. That number is theirs until my contract ends on Nov 20, then they 'recycle' it, or so I was told by them over the phone.

[Q] Could T-Mobile be "selling" our phone numbers?

I have been with AT&T cellular in all their various incarnations continuously for over 20 years. About 4 weeks ago I switched over to T-Mo and went on their $30 unlimited data/text and 100 min PREPAID voice plan and ported my 20+ yr old number to my new T-Mo T989.
Beginning less than 12 hours after the port completed I have been receiving almost daily spam calls (selling things, credit cards etc etc). In my 20 years with AT&T I have not received (other than wrong numbers) a single call that of that type.
Seems more than a coincidence. Could it be because it is a PREPAID plan? Has anyone experienced this sort of thing?
If you log into your tmobile account on the web, you can opt out of the crap. By default you are opted out of email marketing stuff, but not phone. (It's in the profile settings somewhere, I forget exactly where.)
Been with T-Mobile for almost 3 yrs and I haven't had any of that, but it's not a prepaid service so I don't know.
It could be caused by an app that you downloaded and you gave access to your info.

Nah. Doubt it's an app but I guess anything is possible. Had the identical apps for 2 years while on ATT.
No. T-Mobile does nothing of the sort. However, it isn't currently illegal for random advertisers to call your cell phone much like they used to to landlines for decades. You have to opt out of that, how I'm not sure at this time.
However, it's definitely not T-Mobile 'selling your phone number'. Your phone number is just public like everyone else's.

You can use the same site as for land lines, Do Not Call List. I have my phones listed there but occassionally I still get a few calls/texts that get through.
I just got a new T-Mobile prepaid line and I have had T-Mobile contracts since 2009. No spam.. but that's not to say you aren't getting spammed yourself by either AT&T or T-Mobile.

You forgot about another possibility: Did AT&T sell your number or give it out free because they were pissed you left them? Lots of what if, but nothing proven.
Regardless of how these telemarketer ah's got your number, make sure to register with the National Do Not Call Registry. As of Feb 2008, once you register a number it no longer expires.
https://www.donotcall.gov/
Switched from ATT to Tmobile with T989 launch. It sounds like a thirdparty must have obtained your number because no spam right here. Either Tmobile and ATT decided to only sell your number out of the millions of numbers they had or somebody else got your number and is selling it to spammers.
Although this is probably just a band aid, try Call Control from the market. It's what I use. You just load the numbers you don't want to hear from in the Black List and your good to go.
Oh, and it doesn't just send em to voice mail, it actually answers and then immediately hangs up the call without you knowing a thing. AWESOME app!!!

Do Not Call list has become a joke. I get calls on my home phone day after day from everything from Chimney sweeps to the infamous "Rachel from Cardholder services." . The "callers" know the feds will do nothing about it except on a very rare occasion just to show how they are "helping the people." All my numbers have been on that list since day 1 and renewed every 2 years,

I'd say we would be hearing about it a lot more. I still doubt it's T-Mobile directly. Making it a habit of spamming new customers is not good for business. They have done texts before, but not a barrage of calls. AT&T should also be looked at.
They don't?

I acquired a post-paid T-Mobile line for testing purposes (I'm a software developer) in December 2014. I have given the number to nobody; it is not used for me to call or be called. All incoming calls are forwarded to my PBX that records the calls. It responds with a recording and some DTMF tones to waste telemarketer time. Yesterday it received a call from someone selling a mortgage product who addressed me by name. Explain how that happened.
the do not call list doesn't stop it either. I've been with TMo for over 13 years, have been in the national do not call list for 9 years abd still daily I get at least three calls from robocalls, autodialers, sales people etc. It's become ridiculous. I have more blocked numbers in my phone now than numbers I use.

[Q] Leaving Sprint but have questions...

So i am finally leaving behind the s l o w e s t network in the US for this beauty, my concern is my number. Is it easy to move my number over? Or should i just get a new one? I hate sending out my number and telling everyone to update it, but i also heard that its a hassle to move numbers over...anyone have some info?
My second question is does Straight Talk carry micro sim cards? Like at walmart? And since I am waiting on my N4 to arrive should I get the card from there or cheaper from Amazon....
Anyone?.....
I left Sprint for Straight Talk too (because of their slow network).
I ported my Sprint number to Google Voice, & also ported a separate number to Straight Talk. Porting was easy & straight forward, & took about 48 hours to be finalized.
They have micro SIMs, but only on their website (you can get phones & service cards from Wal-Mart, but not the SIM cards). Straight Talk usually ships with in one business day, and uses FedEx.
I just moved from sprint to t-mobile. Don't cancel sprint, just move your number as part of the T-mobile activation process, then Sprint automagically gets the memo and your account gets cancelled afterwards

Within the first 24 hours calls would come in to the new phone, but I couldn't make any. Text would go out, but not in. MMS didn't work.
After 48 hours, everything worked fine.
This was my experience, your milage may vary.

Ok i think i can live with that.... besides i use Gtalk a lot for communication with my peeps.
So to sum it up ..dont cancel Sprint, Call Straight Talk and advice them that I wish to port my number over.?
Also should I buy the micro SIM from them a day before i receive the phone so i can have it work, or should i just walk into a T-Mobile store after buying it from WalMart?
i ported from att to straight talk took only couple hours but they are on the same network so might be why so quick. They did say it could take up to 48 hrs

You need the SIM card (and service card) to activate your service on their site, so order ASAP! You'll port your number over using the website (you'll see an option to port).
Oh, you may not have a signal at first. My phone showed a signal a few hours after porting.

I recommend the Google Voice option as well, that way it'll then be your number forever, no further porting needed, you don't have to pay for a separate text plan if you don't want/need to (although a lot of plans toss that in for free or a bundle of 'em these days...like I'm old or something ), it gives you the ability to block numbers/screen callers/set up lots of voicemail options for different people and groups, etc etc etc, just look at the service.
The Android app is pretty bare bones, but functional. Get the Google Voice app for your Chrome desktop browser, you can send/receive texts from your browser and you don't need to have any other fancy apps that do the same thing. My 2 cents, anyway.

I ported my number to Google Voice to leave Sprint. I was worried about losing MMS, but then I recieved an MMS in GV! I don't know when this change occured, but now you get a GV sms saying "MMS recieved" then your Gmail account gets an email with the picture in it. So it isn't completely integrated into the GV app or website, but close enough for me.

I I use Google Voice too. GV can get MMS messages, but I can't send them through the Google Voice app. The MMS pics usually arrive through email. I tried replying through email, but it hasn't worked out. But you can still send pics through the phone's default messaging app.

T Mobile $30 Plan with Nexus 4 from Google Play?

Hi there,
I successfully ordered a Nexus 4, 16Gb earlier today at 3.44PM EST
Now, I was reading about the TMobile $30 deal, and it's pretty awesome.
I was wondering if I would be able to use that sim card? Or I have to actually get a phone from TMobile?
I just found this - Is it possible to use this Sim Card with the Nexus?
Thanks

I got this $30 T-Mobile plan, and ported my phone # from VZW. During the activation process, you can choose whether you want to port your #, or get a new one. You can check if your # can be ported at: http://www.t-mobile.com/switch/default.aspx
The Nexus 4 takes a micro Sim card. Make sure you get that, and not the regular SIM!

Just port your number to Google Voice. Then you can use your same # as Caller ID for outgoing calls with all of the GV features. In addition, you can then port the number back to T-Mobile if you want.

Yes did this a while ago, when switching from regular Sprint to SERO Sprint, spent $20 on an ATT go phone and a couple of days to swap numbers back and forth. Though the Google Voice is a great idea then you never have to worry about porting ever again, plus you can even have it forwarded to land lines if you have crap service at home.
Will try with Google Voice.
Thanks everybody for your help. Much appreciated

Porting T-mobile prepaid to AT&T Straight Talk

Anyone have any experience porting numbers to Straight Talk? I am currently on T-mobile prepaid, but the data speed around here is almost nothing. :crying:
Was wondering if anyone could share their experience with porting their number. What is required, what are the steps, how long does it take?
Any help would be appreciated. :good:

You can either do it on-line when you activate your micro sim card or over the phone. I choose over the phone as I had already bought one micro sim to test out their service first and wanted to move my exiting minutes over at the same time. They sent me a new micro sim free of charge to do this. I got a CSR right away when I called at 9:00 am and the whole process took like 20 minutes. I'm not sure how long T-Mo takes to port over numbers but like I said Verizon did it in 5 minutes.

You get the new ST sim first. Wait until about 7 days before your service for the month expires. Call T-Mo and ask for your account number and PIN. That's all you need from T-Mo. When you are ready, go online to ST and activate new service. In the process you click you will be porting a number from another service. Enter the t-Mo acct. # and PIN then wait upto 24 hours or more for the process to work. It will take longer if you start it on the weekends.

Nexus 6 released on Verizon February 26th ?

obviously take this with a huge grain of salt, but just had a live chat with VZW rep to ask about the N6. I do this randomly just to see what kind of (non) answers I get.
However, this dude fired back with an exact date of February 26th. That date is on a Thursday, which is traditionally the day that Verizon launches new phones. Just struck me odd that he had such a specific answer, and went on to say that he had just recently been given the information.
Of course I've tried to live chat again three times since then, and each one of the reps said that they have no information about the N6 lol.
Take it for what it's worth.

I was also informed today and "assured" by a verizon rep (via chat) that they would be getting the Nexus 6 on February 26. They also said that the Samsung Note Edge would be coming out January 8th. I guess that will be the first test of this reps information.

Eh, i am not going to believe any rep. As far as this goes, i worked for Tmobile and ATT customer support and we where never really told anything ahead of time from everyone else. We where told to keep customers either happy or holding on with the company. It has been a few years ago from that though, so i dont know if that policy has changed. :good:

obviously take this with a huge grain of salt, but just had a live chat with VZW rep to ask about the N6.

Edit:
trying to upload my screenshot of the conversation, but the forum is being difficult :/
Mod Edit: Attached the pic for you. I don't think embedding a https location works.

A poster on Reddit said he was told at a corporate store the same thing. The rep, after looking it up, said the computer was showing February 26th availability.
and i just asked and was told there is no scheduled release. thats pretty far ahead for a release date anyway.
i just asked two reps and i got nothing out of either one of them
I just want VoLTE already on my Nexus. No voice and data simultaneously is a bit annoying and per usual is probably because of Waiting for Verizon release their version.
Nexus 6 currently on Verizon Network
I recently bought the Nexus 6 and is currently running on the Verizon Network. Originally, the local Verizon dealer refused to add the Nexus 6 phone to the network since it was not a "Verizon Phone". My philosophy is, "Never let a multi multi multi billion dollar tech company tell what they cant do". By saying this, I called the Verizon Tier 2 support and they were able to activate the phone from their location bought using the same simcard number that was used from my Note 2 phone. Now, after two days, I was booted off the Verizon network and was told via message that I need to sign back on the Verizon network. After a few days corresponding with tier 2 tech support, the reason for the booting off the system was i was using a new "nano simcard" which resulted in a new simcard number. Originally, they recommended that i find someone with a new Motorola phone and activate my simcard through their phone ( long story) and then re-transfer back to the new simcard for the Nexus 6 to work but that greatly avoided. As a result, my Nexus 6 is currently working without any problems . Lastly, they will have to submit a "DMD Form" to "register" your non-Verizon phone. Hope this helps.

That sounds like too much work and a big hassle just to stay with a carrier. Its reminiscent of when I had Verizon a few year ago.
I wonder if VZW will try to lock down the Nexus and if Google will let them.
Sorry for the newbie question.
When you said you cut the (VZW) Sim card and inserted it, the phone booted up and you started using it as simple as that?

I think China may get the phone before Verizon.

Yes, that simple. I am with VZW. I had a Galaxy S3 with a Micro SIM. I picked up a punch on Amazon (I didn't trust trying to use scissors but many people have success with them) ( http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00FW70ZF6/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 ).
I got my N6, unlocked it, decrypted it, rooted it, transferred apps via Titanium Backup, and then punched the SIM and moved it from the GS3 to the N6. Booted up and it worked. Have not had any problems at all. *knock* *knock*
A Verizon nexus is NOT a nexus. Is just another fully OEM Verizon locked device.

If bought directly from Verizon.. Yes locked boot loader with modified software/firmware tampered trip counter and of course Verizon proprietary bloatware.
The online chat reps are the worst... If it is really true that VZW will carry it on 2/26 add another one to two months cause of supply issues + VZW tramp stamp time.
