i was on latest RR rom cm. after charging my phone for 30min it was too hot and even i opened back case and battery removed then i inhaled it was some plastic burn like smell. though its working without an issue. im bit nervous why it happened and is this smell normal.
Not sure if the CM ROMs have fast charging?
If fast charging is enabled it will charge the battery much faster, but also cause it to heat up more. The smell is a side effect of heating up plastic.
I'm sure Samsung tested that it's all safe.
But it was bothering me also that it got that hot so I just disabled the Fast charging (Settings->Power Saving).
It takes a bit more time to charge - I'm usually not in a hurry to charge it, it will still charge in 3-4 hours max. But it will not get that hot and it might also be easier on the battery so it lasts longer before needing to be replaced.

well when i first got my phone i only charged it when the battery light was red and hollow. And at times i would put it under my pillow due to the alarm being so loud, didnt want to wake up my son.
But the past few days when i charge it and put it under my pillow it gets really warm, it never did this before, any reason why?
AFAIK all phones do, as well as any battery you charge (MP3 players, laptops, etc).
yea I agree, I think that is something most smartphones do, my mytouch did it... so did the g1
Thats because it charges at 1000mA via AC.
Don't charge it under your pillow! definitely not good for it.
Today I charged for an hour my n1 over usb.
It was really hot.
Then I go to home, and when I arrived, it was again really hot, and battery life is over.
So I reboot and now is ok, but is very very strange...
yeah they get hot, i have the battery life widget and also shows the battery temperature, when it was charging it peaked to 110 degrees lol
I came from a mytouch 3g, didnt have it long, i love Android, i guess i change the alert to something more calm. But before i charged it under my pillow and it never got hot. Maybe its a wear and tear thing
Any device to which you're pumping power into, or using power, generates heat. That's how it works. The only difference between the devices is how much it draws; the more it draws, the hotter it gets.
Yep. Don't charge under your pillow. It needs air or it will get super hot. Not a good thing.
Man...I thought my N1 was going to burst into flames today. 114.5 degrees...not sure if it would have gone any higher.
I was in the car using an AC/DC adapter. Had my navigation going along with my music. The glass on the phone got hot to the touch! I unplugged it right away.
How high of a temp can this phone endure without damage? If it were to overheat, would it just freeze up and shutdown?
Anyway...what's really weird is that the phone was plugged in when battery life was at 80...when before I unplugged...it was at 79. Huh?
warm nexus!
i charged my nexus tru the usb a few days ago, yes it got warm like always but when it was fully charged. it stayed warm even when it was unplugged from the usb. i know that was kinda odd and it drained the battery, it was at 76% just after 30mins. so i reboot and everything went back to normal. what the hell?! i think its a bug. what i do now just to be safe is i reboot the nexus after every charge and check if it stays warm...
Hey everyone
I'm usually super careful when it comes to my smartphone and battery health, I only charge it as slow as possible and try to limit charges over 80% or under 30% as much as possible.
However last weekend I left my phone in the car by accident. Of all things I chose one of the hottest days this year so far, the car was standing in the blasting heat for a couple of hours. After getting back I kind of panicked when I noticed that I had left the phone in the car, it was very very hot. In this state of panic I immediately turned it on (I know I shouldn't have). The device booted up normally, however the touchscreen seemed to be less responsive than usual.
Now I kind of fear that I ruined my battery's health. Subjectively it seems like I need to recharge the phone sooner. Is there any way to tell how much damage I did to the battery?
Thanks for the advice!
A few weeks ago I noticed my phone wasn't charging at night. At first I assumed it was either my charger or charging cable as their both cheap ones from Amazon. But using my Anker battery pack or the stock charger setup didn't help. Then I noticed on nights it wasn't too cold, it would charge just fine. At night I like to sleep with my room being as cold as possible and here in north Texas it's been getting into the low teens. The phone not charging at night isn't a huge deal as I can just charge in the morning after the phone has been in my pocket for a while. I'm just wondering if anybody else has experienced something like this. I can't find any info on the S7 or S7 Edge, only the S6. And I'm not getting any notifications that say the battery temp is too low or anything like that, it just doesn't charge.
I'm pretty sure there isnt a battery temp too low warning lol. I only know these batteries likes to be charged when its warm cause it allows it to charge faster. Anyone want to put their phone in the freezer and try it?
galaxy S8 too cold won't charge
I am a 3rd party phone repair technician, I had two Galaxy S8+'s come in today with the same issue you described.
They won't turn on with the charger plugged in and if they are on they display a message about the battery being too cold and won't charge.
We have had the same issue on s6 and s7's that have been water damaged however cleaning the board with distilled water and ultrasound to blast minerals off fixes it.
The part that stumps me with the s8+ is both phones are not water damaged and have never been exposed to moisture...
A new battery does not fix the issue and the charge port and other components are immaculately clean.
If anyone has a solution for this issue that seems to effect the S6,7, and 8's I would be very interested.
Hi
One of my S4's, i9505 variant, has stopped charging out of the bloom. Batteries that recognise as 50% full on my functioning S4 identify as 0-2% on this broken one. In stead of charging, it gets extremely hot and shuts off the charging screen due to this.... But continues heating. Because the screen is broken as I use it as a spare battery charger, I swapped the main boarded into my working phone to see what is on screen. And it almost cooked my good screen .
Does anyone know this issue or how to fix it?
It's not worth fixing. The motherboard itself needs to be replaced.

Alright thanks. Was hoping to save it as I use it to charge my spare battery. Was so useful. R.I.P

My battery can reach 41c while charging and intensive use usually and feels warm to the touch. But when I left it in the dodgy phone it felt a bit hotter. I'd say 10c hotter as a guess. Would that damage my battery? It was sitting plugged in for about an hour at most and probably wasn't charging much. (The battery was the coolest part of the phone yikes)
The top of the phone was too hot to touch at all. Battery felt about as hot as my normal S4 gets under med use. Toasty but not untouchable.
Heat is never good for a lithium ion battery as the materials that make up the battery degrade as a result. That said, 10 degrees warmer isn't going to affect the battery enough to kill it. The motherboard itself likely developed a fault that killed its charging circuit. You should be thankful the battery didn't get a power surge from the fault, or you'd have set your broken device and whatever it touched on fire as the battery exploded.
Could my work on my XT1575 cause the phone to charge very slowly? As long as I was using a good QC3 charger and a QC3-certified micro USB cable my MXPE phone charged fast. I have TWO working XT1575s. When plugged into the same charger with the same USB cable they both showed "Turbocharging" and both charged quickly.
Last week I replaced the back of one of the phones. -- exchanging the original back with an ebony wooden back. I had problems getting the ebony back to stay completely adhered so I installed it, removed it, installed it again with better adhesive. looks fine now.
Now, the back is securely in place BUT THE PHONE WON'T CHARGE FAST ANYMORE. Could I have damaged something in the phone while doing all that heating during the back replacement? I use a heat gun, always on the low setting, but I for the last installation I moved the heat pretty slowly around the back to increase the heat and hopefully improve the adhesion.
Everything about the phone works perfectly, both hardware and software. When I plug in a charging cable is shows "Turbocharging" but the charge time estimated by the phone is 7 or 8 or even 9 hours. That's about how long it takes too. And the phone won't charge past about 90%.
I've already replaced the battery. I have no idea how to further diagnose the problem. Have I effectively destroyed my phone while putting on a prettier back (to summarize how stupid I'd feel)?

Either you have a cheap low quality battery or you probably burnt it up with the heat gun. The NFC pad is on top of the battery if that still works then I highly doubt anything else was damaged but I could be wrong. Worse case scenario you desoldered something on the motherboard but I doubt it. First check the wattage on your wall charger if it says 5 volts and 1 Amp then that's your issue. Most wall chargers or USB ports I use have to be at least 5 volts and 2 amps or it will not charge and it'll actually get stuck at 90% like in your case because the charge rate slows down after 80% I believe and a crap wall charger won't have enough power to charge the phone like a high quality OEM wall charger would.
