Which rom can I use without resizing the partition.
Which rom can I use WITH Resizing WITHOUT extra SD-Card partitions (FAT32, EXT3 or 4 and maybe SWAP).
When I resize, where do I find the proper files.
As I just need Swiftkey and Whatsapp on this thing and maybe my Navigon.

Hey guys,
I am planning to format my sdcard to fat32/ext_ partitions for use of apps2sd. I have a few questions I would like answered first though.
-Is a swap partition required? I have little space on my sd and would rather not use one. If it is required, what size/file system would you suggest? I take it there is no invisible swap partition by default?
-Ext 2, 3 or 4 for my apps2sd partition?
- I am planning to make my apps2sd partition only about 200mb, will that work well?
Thanks.
- swap: depending on rom, but in general: no
- i would recommend ext2, you can use 3 or 4 as well. keep in mind that ext4 doesn't work on any 2.1 rom until we have the kernel sources (after official release).
- it will work, the size only determines how many apps you can install there. average size of an app is ~1mb, though can go from a few kb to several mb (i.e. copilot.apk has 14mb).
Thanks a lot Any particular advantage of ext2 over ext3?

Ext3 and ext4 wear out your sdcard quicker, because of journaling features.
Since, compared to a system or cache partition, the sdcard is not written to as much, and system crashes where the mobile is shut down during a write operation are rare for Android, journaling doesn't offer any significant advantage. The unnecessary journaling however, accounts for extra writes to the flash memory chips, which in turn equals extra wear.

ext2 is still the filesystem of choice for flash-based storage media (such as SD cards, SSDs, and USB flash drives) since its lack of a journal minimizes the number of writes and flash devices have only a limited number of write cycles.

what exactly is app2sd??
I am using RAFDROID ROM on a TMOUS HD2
in the instructions he said that if I am using a euro HD2 with 512 rom I should partition my sd card
so I did not do that and flashed the rom on my NAND
then when I started using apps I noticed that after two weeks usage I have only 50 MB left!!!!
so I want to activate app2sd and move my apps to the sd card..
so please I need some help from the experienced users on this great forum that can advise me about what exactly is this and how to activate and use it
thanks in advance!!
Apps2sd moves your apps to the sdcard, usually to an ext 3/4 partition. I don't know about the ROM you're using, but on the one I use (mdj's Cyanogen 2.6), you can move apps to external storage like this: settings --> applications --> manage applications. Then select an app and there is an option to move to sdcard.
@freeincolorado, the method you described is not A2SD+, that method is called move2sd.
A2SD+ puts the dalvik cache as well as the applications in a EXT2/3/4 partition, usually called the sd-ext partition. This method will still show you that the application is in the ROM. However, the sd-ext is used instead, depending on the chief implementing A2SD+ in their ROM, the remaining ROM space is suppose to report the partition "sd-ext" free space, however, certain ROMs are not properly done in my view, and will report the userdata partition free space instead. Such as MDJ's Cyanomodgen 7+ Gingerbread.
How to use A2SD+
Usually, they require you to partition your SD Card into 2 primary partition. The first partition is FAT32 where you store all your extras, such as music, ebook, etc (Like how your SD card is presently used). The 2nd partition is EXT2/3/4 depending on your preference, most people do not use EXT2 anymore as it does not support Journaling, since data can be easily corrupted with a battery pull. EXT3 and EXT4 contains journaling feature, so when battery is pulled, data corruption is minimal.
NOT ALL ROMS SUPPORT EXT4. This is a kernel thing, so if the rom uses a kernel that does not use EXT4, then it will not read the partition.
A2SD+ has a nice feature as well, when you switch ROM, you do not need to re-install all the applications, since all applications are placed in the sd-ext folder, including the dalvik cache. However, this also includes the system default applications which might not be compatible with another rom build.
One question:
What´s the best way to move apps to SD?
App2SD with ext2 or ext3 particion or the native send to SD without any partition?
I ask that because i move withe the native way, without partition...
and everything seems to work!
Using Froyobread v020
I also use native option and also using froyobread 0.20
so I think that's the best way, even though it leaves bit of application data into phone !
I´m using the native one too, because I don´t want to make a useless ext-partition on my sdcard.
thank u guys, i was just confused, maybe its needed to make extra one!!!
but when i make ext3 everything seems wrong!
there's no need to create an extra partition if you're using native
I have a 8GB card. I want to make him partitions. Cate advised me to make them and how to be partition?
I enter the recovery menu and I there partition sdcard
You can follow that, or, another easy way is to install ROM Manager App, and select Partition SD Card from within that app. Then simply select size of EXT and Swap partition and it will partition your card.
Make sure your SD Card is backed up before partitioning, because it will format your card.
3xeno Well I do not know that. how to make swap partition and how that?
I am so: 128mb,256mb.512,mb,1024mb,2048mb and 4096.
If you choose to 2048MB how should I put swap? I write as swap 0M, 32M, 64M, 128M and 256M?
It depends on whether you want to use swap or not. I don't use a swap partition, so I kept it at 0.
thanx you very much friends for infformation

So, the Partition Size of the Ext2... for a 4GB card, 1GB is legit?
I know.... depends on the apps, but let´s say. if I have an onboard Navigation soft, will the maps use the fat or the ext-Partition for their data?
And also Music... like flac, it´ll probably go standard on the fat partition, right?

If you use the app's inbuilt ability to move to the SD, it will be moved to the standard FAT32 partition. Only if you enable additional scripts like DTApps2SD, will you be able to move apps to the EXT partition.
Other stuffs like music and all will continue to use the FAT32 partition. On a stock ROM, without an Apps2SD script, the EXT partition will remain unused.

Thnx for your answer!
I read through the buzz nightly thread and s.o. voted for Link2SD from the market and that sounds to me like the best way to go for sd, since I too believe not everything (especially the cache) should be moved to sd to keep up stability.
For me coming from linux, it's hard to understand why android uses fat at all for data.
Hi guys,
First I want to thank you all, I get my HD2 few days ago with a so old and boring windows 6.5, and i had a lot of fun upgrading it to Android.
I successfully installed the CM9 nexus rom with the nativeSD option (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1437463), i'm very impressed by the smoothness of the rom.
I have a small issue with space available for apps, i only have 914Mo of "internal space", 815Mo are aleady used (i guess for the system), meaning i only have 99Mo remaining to install my apps. As i use a lot of them, even if i move most of them to SD card, it is a too small space left.
Do you know how i can increase my "internal space", as i use a 16Go SD i have no problem re-partitioning my sd card, i just don't unsderstand how to do it (with MAGLDR? with CWM? manually with my parition manager?).
thanks a lot in advance for your anwers,

800+Mb?? that's HUGE that's not the system! system files take up usually 150 - 350mb depending on eth rom you flashed, nowhere near 800+
anyway, just backup your rom through recovery, and then use a partition manager via the pc, or the one in recovery, to make a bigger ext partition, say 2gb, and then restore your rom through recovery.
Yes 800MB is indeed a lot. IF you go to Settings->Storage which numbers do you see by Internal Storage?
If you backup your system, how big is the backup ZIP?
You can go through your file system with a tool like Root Explorer (paid) to find out where the big data of your system is. You have about 500MB too much.
Use MiniTool Partition Wizard Home Edition to partition your SD card. Make an EXT4 of about 2GB en default cluster size. The remaining part should be FAT32, 32k cluster size.
Thank you to both of you,
You were perfectly right about the fact that 800Mo+ is way to big. I opened my Ext4 partition with my Ubuntu, and "surprise", i found 2 folder remaining from previous (and failed) attempts of installing MIUI roms. After manually deleting those two, my internal storage went back to normal.
Thank you again for your help.
