Unlocking the bootloader and Wiping Data - X Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi,
I've did a little research about unlocking bootloader on the moto X Play and I found out that this process wipes all your phones data.
Question is....
Does the External SD Card remain untouched. So if I complete a Helium Backup and store that said backup on the External SD Card I will then be able to restore all my data back onto the phone?
As you may imagine the main purpose of the Unlocking Bootloader is to be able to root the phone and install custom ROM on it. The main issue I have with stock ROM is that the External SD card runs independent of the Internal Storage and I'm finding that I run out of room really quickly.
Is there a custom rom that will enable me to use MicroSD card to EXTEND internal storage?
Thanks

No it will not erase ext SD card. No rom so far, in marshmallow it will be so.

Had unlocked the bootloaded. MicroSD was intact in my case. Dont blame me if something goes wrong on your end.

Flash ROMs with sd as internal

Is it possible when you make as cars as internal storage would you be able to flash ROMs or will it brick the phone?
Using the latest TWRP (3.0.0.0) you should be able to flash roms from your sd card being used as internal storage, it also prevents you from losing access to the sd card after you flash a new rom (I use my sd card for internal storage as well). I havent tried flashing anything from it, but I cant think of a reason it wouldn't work.

Adoptable Storage and replacement phone

My phone started rebooting constantly during calls and t-mobile replaced it, I am using a 64gb SD card as adoptable storage, when I got the new phone and inserted the SD card, it said the card is not recognized, I put it back in the old phone and it works fine. I assume it's because it's encrypted to the old phone.
Is there a way to make the new phone recognize it without reformatting and restoring or buying another one and doing the adoptable storage first and then transferring?
this is a deal breaker for adoptable storage for me if I can't transfer without restore or without a second card in the new phone.
Called Samsung and T-mobile and they are both clueless.
Thanks in advance for the help,
Sam
Pretty sure that's how it's supposed to work.

You might have to reformat by selecting the SD card from the storage setting. I had to do the same but my phone wasn't rebooting, just wouldn't read the card without formatting first.
So from what i've been reading, cause i was considering going adoptable storage, once you do it it's tied to the old phone and you would have to reformat the card and re-do the adoptable storage for a new phone or higher capacity sd card if you went up a size.
My question is can you back up the data on the card in the old phone to a pc or through smart switch for pc before putting it in the new phone and starting over? i think that may be the only way.
Keep us posted i'd like to know as well as i was planning on buying an sd card this weekend for the device.

I was up until midnight trying to get this going and no luck. the only solution was to back it up with smart switch (which I did before messing with the card and phones) and reformat and restore.
Samsung support said that I should just remove it from one phone and plug it into the other and it should see everything. T-mobile had no clue about what I was talking about with adoptable storage....
I am up and running but it was not a clean process. so if your phone dies, you are SOL and if you need to replace it, you need to back it up and restore.
the reason I decided to go with adoptable storage was because I have a synology NAS and it can't back up from an SD card so by having the adoptable storage it would defeat the SD card limitation but I guess it's back to looking for another backup solution.
Thanks!

Adoptable Storage & TWRP

Hi guys,
I've done a lot of research into this and have read multiple posts about it, but can't seem to find a decent solution....
Basically, adoptable storage on 6.0 will format the SD card in such a way that only your phone can recognize it. TWRP and your PC won't be able to read the SD card at all. In that case, what's the best way to bypass this?
I'm assuming that you just format 50% of the card as adoptable storage, so the rest can be used by TWRP/PC? It just seems kind of annoying because if you need to flash a new ROM, or if your ROM has issues etc, you'd have to constantly move the data to your SD card's normal storage, otherwise it's unreadable. I'm talking about stuff like Titanium Backups, which I believe can't be saved onto the normal SD card storage, etc.
Looks like I found the answer myself.
Don't bother using that script from Modaco (unless you're on stock 6.0 ROMs). Just format the card as adoptable SD in the ROM itself (I'm using Resurrection Remix), then reboot. Your PC will pick up the SD card via MTP no problem. If that doesn't work, boot into TWRP (make sure you're using 3.0.2.2-test as of this current writing) and select micro-SD (adoptable storage). It should show up via MTP as well.
Looks like nothing is affected as TWRP and my PC can still read the card despite being formatted as adoptable. Problem solved.
Update 2:
If you are using stock official ROM, then adoptable storage won't be visible via MTP. You can use TWRP to access it though, but make sure you're using the latest TWRP. On the phone itself, you can use something like Root Explorer and browse to the following path to access the adoptable storage contents:
/mnt/expand/xyzblahblah/media/0
the xyzblahblah part is a long random string. It might look different on your phone.
Note that Titanium Backup can't recognize this path. You can browse to it, but it can't access it. Best to format your card as 50/50 adoptable/portable storage.

Samsung Sd card won't format in cyanogen 13

Hi guys I learnt the hard way that I can't use my Samsung 64Gb sd card on the cyanogen 13 unofficial Rom.
Firstly I hadn't read anywhere that I had to remove the sd card when flashing the Rom only to be stuck on a frozen boot until I thought what do I have to lose, let me just yank the thing out and voila! The phone booted four set up.
After that I inserted the sd card in the hope that i can format it and use on my new room as portable storage but No luck as my phone just loses it .
Does this not function at all or is there a work around to use an sd card or it needs any specific permissions to recognize it?

Remove sd card partitions

Hello, a few months I rooted my g530t1. I have a Samsung Evo + 128gb sd card that I partioned. In my own stupidity locked it up. I recovered it back to stock, but I can't get access to the other 60gb. I unmounted it and reformatted it. In hopes of removing the partitions and regain access to the full 120gb. I installed ES file pro and analyzed the sd card, but it doesn't acknowledge there's still another 60gb of free space. Do I need to re-root? Are there any other non-rooted ways to accomplish this? Thanks
