Force the ota update? - Nexus Player Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

How do I get my player to update? I don't have a good setup to flash the new system images through adb/fastboot.

I think we are just going to have to be patient.

Still no OTA for me, what's going on with that?

I literally just checked now and it's OTA is available I am installing update. 11pm FL time woop Woop

Hopefully you don't have issues with the brightness being too high like I and others have had.

I would hold off on the update even if it comes to your device. Casting is completely broken and my device now changes language to Korean every night on its own.

Eclair to Froyo: How often do phones check?

Hey all,
Quick question. Does anyone know how often or how our phones query the server for update checks? Is the software first downloaded before asking us if we want to upgrade? Does the sync icon light up while it is downloading? Does our battery charge need to over x to before the software either downloads and/or notify us?
I'm curious as to how the entire process works.
Thanks.

I have an Evo, but I follow the tech news. Software updates are released in waves so that if there are issues with an update, they are isolated and they can stop sending them out. Essentially, the first wave are the guinea pigs. I'm not sure how they decide who gets them, but I'm pretty sure it's random. You will be notified on your own when you can grab the update. It starts on the 21st and everyone should have the update by the 25th. Of course, you can probably just find the update online once it's out and do it yourself:

When the update is available to your phone, it will download it silently in the background. Once the download is complete, you will get a notification that an update is ready to install. As long as you have enough battery left, you will have the option to install it. Otherwise you will be prompted to plug into your charger.
As far as the frequency your phone checks for updates, I'm not sure other than at boot time.
Sent from an Epic I haven't bricked yet.
Also, I believe the updates are 'pushed', which is to say, Sprint contacts your phone directly not vice versa.
Given how infrequent updates are, having your phone poll for them would be a wasted process.
Our phones already poll for app updates through the market and the update is hosted on googles servers.
I don't think it is too far fetched that our phones are notified somehow through this process?
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA App
It would make sense, with the 'wave' method mentioned above, that it's just pushed. Thats the fun! Back when I used to odin to D*27 to let it OTA DI18, it would happen really randomly, anywhere from instant to half an hour... never waited longer though, as its open to request, I just 'check for updates' of it was taking too long. Either way, unless you are one of the first wave, I would wait for XDA's Devs to look over the one from the first wave, and then DL their update... Im sure they will get one from the first wave... I will probly Odin to DI18 tomorrow night and wait, just for fun, as I do agree there is an attraction to that, kind of like when you get a surprise PS3 update that gives you some new unlocked functionality... reminds you why you bought it... course with this phone, we would feel that way if it were more timely, but hey, theres the future...

My phone doesn't poll for market updates, i'm only notified if I actually open market.
Besides, this is from sprint, not from market.

I'm not so sure, as I remember when receiving the ota for di07 and di18 the download was slow so I turned on WiFi, at which point the dl stopped all together.

I don't believe they would do it that way. A vast majority of users are on the latest while there is probably a minority who didn't update past DI07. They get the latest first and then get the stragglers in the later days.

A software update to EB13 (Froyo) is available for the Samsung Epic 4G via Google OTA. Customers will become eligible for the
upgrade across a 4-day period based on their status with the Google servers. 67% of users are currently on SW DI18 so the first
OTA package we will publish will be an upgrade from DI18 – Froyo (DL11). We will be publishing hop upgrades from DG27 – Froyo
and DI07 – Froyo as soon as possible following the initial release
OTA Duration time is dependent on current device usage: 10 – 25 minutes, with installation time of 6-8 minutes
from the leaked .pdf from the first day, after the screenshots. thanks to whoever leaked it! DI18 is priority, you cant really sit on the older versions, I think those 'hop updates' are for old stock sitting around with the old versions waiting to be activated. Oh and the DL11 is a typo, they just cut and pasted from a previous release most likely...

That happens on any download. Switching connections in the middle of a download stops it. Ive done this before. If you start on 3g, you'll have to finish on 3g, or restart on Wifi/4g

maybe it will be automatically updated with a script when they start the ota's. idk, just a guess.
UPDATE PROCESS: The software update will be delivered as a wireless download (over-the-air, or OTA) in waves starting on February 21. All Samsung Epic 4G owners should have access to the download by the end of the week (Feb. 25).
Once your Epic is in the queue and eligible to download the update, a message will be pushed to your device saying that a software update is available. If you are not yet in the queue and you attempt to check for a software update manually, you will receive a message saying “no upgrade is available”. This simply means your device isn’t in the current wave of updates.
All customers should have access to the update by the end of the week (Feb. 25).
just got this off sprint site.... so phones dont check... pushed, and you cannot even manually trigger it... I even Odin'd to DI18 a bit ago, to see if I could trigger it activating DI18... no dice. OK... whos in wave 1... cough it up!
Whosdaman,
Just curious, can I ask why contact you first? Are you aware of something I haven't read?
I'm rooted and rommed, but watching hubby's unrooted (won't let me touch or mess and screw up his!! Doesn't believe me I can fix whatever I break!!) Epic.
Really do appreciate someone looking out for everyone. I am going to hold on his until I see some positive results, because I can't fix what Sprint breaks!!

N4 Update to Lolipop

Yesterday I purchased two Nexus 4's as gift's I powered them both up at same time to get them setup and updated ready for use but only one of them updated to Lolipop
The other will not update over the air. Crazy.
I waited all night but still no update on the other phone, Is there any reason you can think of that would prevent the other phone from updating. Or should I just wait it out and see if it comes though.
"EDIT"
There were no sim card in both devices and I fully charged them both before use if that helps.

why bother waiting? you can just flash the OTA or since they are brand new flash the factory images from Google. No sense in waiting for the the device to pull the OTA.

Grab your Factory Images from here: https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images
Read some tutorials around here and flash them. No need to wait for OTA.
I am very hesitant to be honest, It looks like lots of stress for the 5 update But..................... I haven't ruled it out yet
Maybe I just need time to absorb some information before I commit to a manual update.

[Q] Nexus 4 - no 5.0 update yet...

Hey everyone!
I got a new 8gb Nexus 4 a month ago for a great price and am using it now as my daily driver since I cracked my N5 and I am a bit bummed that it still hasn't received it's 5.0 update! It is already been nearly 2 months since they started rolling out!! My N5 already had it since the beginning of December. What is the hold-up? I don't know much about the system of ota rollouts (only that they start at about 1% of devices for the first week and in the next 2-3 they creep up to 25%, 50%, 75% and then the remaining 25%) but I am studying in the Czech Republic so I thought that it was effected by geographical location but I know people here already have 5.0 ota's on there N4s :/ So why haven't I got it? What is the problem? I am on 4.4.4 build number KTU84P....
What are my options to update manually? I don't want to use the Android SDK to update so are there any other options?? I know I could update flashing the factory images but can I do this without the SDK? I don't think the update will come and I don't want to wait any longer
Google 15 second adb install xda. That'll setup adb and fastboot on your pc. Then use fastboot to flash the factory image.

I rooted and customized my N4 without a PC. Follow these steps:
1) Download and install Towelroot. Once it installs and reboots u should be rooted.
2) Download SuperSU and update binary the normal way.
3) Next download BootUnlocker For Nexus Devices. Install and tap on unlock. U should reboot and when the "Google" boot logo shows up there should be a unlocked lock.
4) Download BusyBox and install
5) Download TWRP Manager and install the latest TWRP version for mako.
6) You're done, press volume down+power when u turn on your phone to get access to TWRP.
I can confirm, I did this myself and like u I was stuck running 4.4.4 and I am using SimpleAOSP 5.0.2 and in my opinion its a lot more stable than Stock L
BTW Google does plan on releasing 5.0 for N4 but since they have so much issues with the OS, the OTA is being delayed

The 5.0.1 is very stable. There are a few little bugs in it but it's not so bad.
The battery life is okay, I use mine the whole day and on the end of the day he is like 15-20% remaining. Better than on Kit Kat.

You are asking questions that are really hard to define and VERY user-specific. For me personally, I have a Nexus 5 and my wife has a Nexus 4. Both units are completely stock and have never been rooted or messed with in any way. For us, 5.0+ has worked perfectly and has no major issues. I do not experience the "memory leak" that people scream about, and I get as good if not better battery life as I've ever gotten. I'm sure someone will immediately jump in and proclaim that I'm an "apologist" or a "Google fanboy" and that there are countless problems that are well documented and I'm just delusional. But for my wife and I, we simply haven't had any issues as daily users of the phone and the latest OS. For me, I didn't wait for the OTA, I sideloaded the updates and it was a VERY simple process. Hardest part was getting the drivers correct but once I figured that out, it was 10-15 minutes at most to upgrade each phone.
Ohh glad to hear that. My Nexus 5 performed the same I would say. Maybe even a tad better when compared to 4.4.4... Anyway glad to hear the N4 is the same (come to think if it, this phone has REALLY surprised me.. I initially skipped it and stuck with my Gnex until the N5 came out. But sadly I dropped that a few times while taking photos skiing and some moisture got into it and the screen cracked... As a student I can't afford the £178 repair just after Christmas so I looked around for a new cheaper phone. Was going to get the Motorola G but saw that there are still a few NEW N4's for £100! And since I've had the past 4 nexus devices it was a phone I just had to get. On 4.4.4 I literally can't tell the difference in performance and everything else in that matters is great! The screen is so-so - not because the resolution -> actually don't really notice anything bad at 720p and don't need 1080p. But as on most IPS screens you can see most of the pixels when in direct sunlight. Just a bit more here compared to the N5. But after a month - a REALLY great phone. For an unbelievable price. Even the camera isn't that bad )
Sorry, now back to my question - do you have a guide which you followed to sideload lollipop?? If so could you please link it? I'm a bit scared - I really can't afford to brick this phone at the moment. Thanks allot!

Force OTA?

Two of my friends recently picked up a Nexus 6p after messing around with mine and my wife's. They haven't received any updates in the two weeks they've had them and the devices came with the January security update.
Neither of these two will be unlocking bootloaders or flashing custom roms, one is local and the other one is on the East Coast. So let's leave the comments about doing it manually out of here, I'm just interested in figuring out how to force the download of the actual over the air update.
Verizon if it matters.
I forgot to mention, I have been searching but the search function on the latest version of Tapatalk is completely useless.
The only way to force it is by doing it manually. You don't have to unlock the bootloader though. It can be achieved by using adb to sideload the zip with the stock recovery. This is probably more work than you want to get into but it's the only way I know of. I have instructions in section 12 of my guide:

I think I've read somewhere that it's an issue with the device syncing with the Google servers. A factory reset might help it along, that would wipe the phone though.
The February update has finally pushed to my handset today. Hopefully if I install, the March update will follow.

LG V20 H990DS Firmware Update V10b-Nov-25-2016

Hi,
i just received an OTA update:
V10b-Nov-25-2016
Changelog just stated that usability and functionality of the smartphone has been improved.
Has anybody else already received this? Did anybody notice changes?
Kind regards,
BrowsingMan
received, but nothing to report, works exactly as before
Just updated last night. Seems normal
Received it as well last night. There was a bit of instability for the first hour or so. Lagging etc and one automatic reboot, but I'm guessing that was just due to the OS system settling down.
This morning everything seems normal as before.
Any improvement in auto shots with the camera?

Same happened to me. I rebooted a few times which didn't fix it which got me worried, but by the morning it was fine.
I don't mean to derail the thread but is there any custom support for this phone model? I'm mainly only seeing support for the H918. I'd love to root once its available and safe but it seems like this is one of those odd models out that no one really cares about.

Can you guys check/time your fast charge using OEM cable and charger? It doesn't seem to work for me, ot at least not prior to the OTA update on every ocassion. I've had instability issues when the phone gets a little hot/warm, if left in direct sunlight for 15 minutes, etc. I'm going to thoroughly test this out before posting anjy reviews. So far, not impressed with the loudspeaker.
I also don't want to update the phone yet incase the "impending" root solution, if one comes about, happens to be software-version-specific, since we are dealing with a phone on a locked bootloader.

something i have noticed since the update is a huge improvement in reception... now almost all the time it's 4-5 bars for each sim, on lte and 3g, whereas before i used to pick up my phone and see only 1-2 bars... especially at home.
i must specify that i never had a problem calling or browsing even with 1-2 bars, never lost connection during a call, cristal clear voice. so maybe before it was simply showing less bars than it really was? anyway, just my feedback

Yep , received the update yesterday. No comment on the update work just like normal. ?
Hey guys.
I installed the LG PC Bridge and, among other things, I decided to check for a software update. It informed me one was available, which seemed odd, because I had checked yesterday O.T.A. and had found nothing.
Anyway, I disconnected the phone and checked again and true enough the 10b update was available (still found it weird that it said Nov. 25 though) at approx. 730MB, but I decided to reconnect and use Bridge to update.
I began the process and it said the download size was 2.9GB! That's a huge difference. O.T.A. still shows the update at 730MB. Does anyone know if there any differences??

Does anyone notice any difference?
Mine works great before and after update....
Everything looks really good...I think that the problem with keyboard is a little improved....I'm talking about next word suggestion...
Mine has just been updated to 10b as well. So far everything is working great but I've only just starting using the phone so I can't comment on what was fixed over the last release.
Phone is getting warm and battery drops quicker for me. Anyone has the same problem?
Also, please check your Data usage for Google Docs, Slides and Drive. i don't use it but it still has backgroud data running! Do u have same issue?
Just updated to v10d released December 26 Changelog says performance improvement and improvement to home. Screen but I haven't noticed any changed neither I'm speed nor in options
Did you receive the update via PC Bridge or OTA?
in SEA region, we're still stuck with V10c
I bought mine in Philippines, and since the middle of December (more or less) I am with the 10e version, and still trying to realize how many other versions LG needs to release for the phone have a good usability.
Same for the LG G5, that is in the first Nougat version and it's in the box (both).

i got it via OTA and i went straight from v10b to v10d i didnt receive any update for v10c
I received the OTA update V10F-IND-xx about a week ago. Talked about performance improvement. Post the update the battery performance has gone to hell. It would easily pump out about 6 hours SOT which has now dropped to about 4 hours. Also, have noticed slight to medium heating under the power key when using apps that access data over wifi.Unrooted. Anyone know if it's possible to roll back the update without rooting? OR any quick fix to this problem.
