Samsung S5 speaks locations and "Welcome Home" - How to turn off? - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

This is for a friend's phone and I have not heard this myself.
He says the phone will randomly speak to him with messages like "welcome home" and it will also say where he is going when he leaves home.
I wish I could be more specific, but I don't have first hand experience with this.
Is this a driving mode thing? A talk back thing? A Samsung Voice thing? A Google Voice thing?
Thanks for any help.

Well, I've been gone a couple of weeks and my friend reminded me that I haven't helped him yet.
No replies to my query? Hasn't anyone else experienced this before?

Sounds like Google now.

[Q] Keyboard and Calls Issues

I love my Epic. Recently I have had two problems.
My physical keyboard doesnt register every letter I type. I would say it has about a 90% accuracy. It is not a particular key that doesnt work. Anyone else having this issue? Would this be covered under the manufacturer's warranty> I dont have a Sprint warranty.
Many times when I place a call the first attempt I hear nothing and the person on the other end hears me. When I try the call again it works every time. Any ideas?
Much thanks!
the keyboard problem was discovered when the epic first cam out. There's still no fix or workaround, except that some people think disabling swype will help.
The calling problem is a software one. Are you running dk28? That's a bug with it. You won't hear nothing, so you hang up and then they'll call you back like "why didn't you say anything?" Lol
I tried ordering chinese food and my phone kept doing that so I had to keep caling and I'm sure we were all annoyed lol

I read on another thread about the call issue, and someone said to "toggle" the speaker phone icon. For me the Toggle fix around works, also another statement was to wait for the timer to start counting before putting the phone to the ear and turning off the screen.
It's nice to know that I'm not alone. The Chinese food story is funny. People think I can't operate my phone!
Yes, I am running DK28 with a midnight ROM. T believe the keyboard issues was present when I had Eclair, too.
I'll try the phoej work around.
Thanks fellas.

[Q] Phone Beeping Tone During Calls

Greetings Everyone,
I've had this issue with my S4 since I got it. During every phone call, at random times, it sounds like someone is hitting a button on their phone causing an annoying tone beep, like someone is pressing the 4 button. My phone is always locked during the phone call and I've asked if the other person could have hit the key which they always say no. This is HIGHLY annoying as it happens during every call. Does anyone have any suggestions on what could be the cause of this?
Thanks in advance!

maybe it is your alerts? Did you try going to Settings of the dialer, and switching off "minute minder" and "alert during calls" under "call alerts" menu?

Really strange then, never heard of this. Maybe you are calling a landline, and two people pick up on the other end, and one of them accientally hits some keys before hanging up.
I am out of guesses. :/

Are you using Google voice or is someone you're calling using Google voice? When I made calls using Google voice I would experience this exact behavior... a random touch tone beep every so often...

Nope, not using Google Voice and am always talking to people on their cell phones. I rarely call landline phones anymore. I have pretty much all notification settings turned off also. I'm at a loss here
I have this EXACT problem.
Happens on my S3 as well. I replaced sim cards but that doesn't do anything. I'm guessing its something with att

I always thought it was a problem with the other persons service, but I was on the phone with HP tech support for work and I was on speakerphone with the phone laying on the desk and the guy kept asking me if I was pressing the dial tone buttons. That's when I was certain it's a problem with something on AT&T. Or just a weird problem that both my S3 and S4 have.
Which dialer are you using? I also had this same issue on my Galaxy Nexus. Haven't had the issue on the S4 yet
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using xda premium
I am completely stock just rooted.
So glad to hear I'm not the only one having the issue. I'm calling AT&T today to see what they say. Maybe it's just a jacked up phone. I'll keep you guys posted on what they say.
I have the same characteristic on my HTC One, so it's not unique to the S4. For the moment, I'm thinking it's just a tone corresponding to notifications, but I'll be following the thread with interest. Please report your finding.
ETA: Won't the joke be on all of us if we find out its the NSA listening in on our conversations?
I have the same issue with the key tones. I hear them randomly and it is so annoying. It all started when I got a warranty replacement Galaxy S3. I thought because the S3 might be a refurb. that is why it was doing this key tones. So I signed a contract and got the Galaxy S4 and the problem did not end. I had EIGHT different S4's, SIX different sim cards, did many hard resets, made two different google accounts, tried another phone, changed my phone number, and changed my account with ATT. IT STILL DOES THE NOISE!!!!! HELP ME PLEASE!!! SOMEONE!!!
Interesting... I had the exact same thing with my Sprint Galaxy S3. I hadn't pressed keys on my end, and the person on the other end (different people) always swore they hadn't pressed anything.
I haven't noticed it (yet) on my AT&T S4, but it is definitely not specific to AT&T. My S3 wasn't even rooted - completely stock. Maybe something in the more recent updates from Samsung that is going out to all the carriers?
Edit: Scratch my thought about Samsung, I see someone above mentioned the HTC One.
AT&T sent me out a HTC One to try on weds and the first convo I had with someone the key tones were there. The guy at AT&T thought it might have been my 4G LTE signal and he made my phone just 3G because he thought it was the common feature with all the phones but even with just the 3G it still does it. Im at a lost! Every time I hear the key tones I want to throw the phone against the nearest wall.
Have it on my S3, on Straight Talk AT&T sim
I've been searching and searching for an answer for this. I've had my phone since February, and this beeping only started in the past couple of months. Someone suggested it was the minute minder, but that is turned off on my phone. I've exhausted all options anyone has posted, and I guess I just have to deal with it. I'm starting to think it's the NSA thing...
By the way, my friend has heard the beeps on their end, as well but don't hear it on calls with other people so it doesn't seem to be their iPhone. Imagine that...still doesn't make me want one!
Notification beeps?

Looks like it might have something to do with "DTMF" Touch tones. In a google search, I am running across many people talking about this issue and addressing it as DTMF but haven't found a solution. Many search hits!
If anybody else wants to try and run it down further, search for DTMF tones during call or similar.

I have been searching this everywhere. I am starting to think you are right. I went back as far as 2009 though. Initially it was reported with VOIP phones. So I wonder if on the back end companies are beginning to integrate technologies.
Regardless it's annoying! I'm so glad I'm not the only one!
Similar problem, with details.
I've been having a similar issue with key tone sounds during calls as well. I'm with PureTalk USA and have been fine for over a year now, then this started happening. The problem for me began with getting a new call forwarding number because my voicemail began having issues. I noticed I was hearing intermittent sounds like a key being dialed during calls. I checked my settings, nothing indicated the phone had any kind of minute minder active. Because the beeping is irregular that wouldn't make sense anyway. During a call last night, for example, I must have heard it more than 30 times in an hour, many of those times in clusters of 4-7 in the space of only 5 minutes. This happens with incoming and outgoing calls, to any carrier, to even calls to PureTalk customer service.
The other thing I wanted to add was that this was not just with one phone. My regular handset is the unlocked Google Samsung Galaxy Nexus. I took out the sim and put it into my old Nokia GoPhone, and the problem persisted. The Nokia is not a smart phone, and the setting have never been tampered with, and the last time I'd used that phone I had never had this issue.
PureTalk has done little to resolve this matter, stating that the problem is with the handset settings, even though I've explained that I've had this error with my smart phone and with a dumb phone, but they insist the issue is on my end. Since going to their tech support my data has stopped working as well, which was a consequence of their doing an account reset to attempt to resolve my problem. They again tell me this is an issue with my handset and not on their end, despite the account reset changing nothing on my phone. Other tech support ideas such as sending a new sim card and wiping my phone didn't help, not that it would have since the error is on multiple phones, through two sim cards.
Going to switch carriers, thinking TMobile. If PureTalk is convinced my issue is in my handset and continues closing the ticket I don't see that this will ever be resolved.

Well, if it is in fact the NSA eavesdropping on our conversations, then color me disappointed. You think they'd do a better job of covering their tracks. No sense in covert surveillance if you're gonna be announcing it every few minutes with an audible tone.

Lots of false starts with moto voice

I've had my Moto X Pure since Friday and the moto voice assist has been starting when it shouldn't a lot. I was excited to pick my own phrase and initially tried to go with "Hey, evelynn" but under no circumstances was the phone having that. I decided to use OK, Google since I'm so used to that with my old Nexus 5. Driving in my car listening to a podcast for the first time it registered an "OK, Google", I didn't think there was anything in the podcast to set it off but I thought it was a fluke. Then over the course of the weekend it proceeded to start voice assist at the most random times, once during a guitar solo from music that was playing through the phone, during conversations that had nothing like "OK, Google" in the conversation, and once even while I was laying down on the couch. I leave the phone in a breast pocket and many times I would pick it up to check something and the phone would already be open at the voice assist screen.
Yesterday I decided to switch to something maybe even more outside of my normal speech so I changed it to the longer "OK, Motot X" but it has still gone off at least three or four times today.
Is anybody else experiencing this?

Some phrases are stronger than others . I changed my phrase yesterday from "okay listen up" to "computer respond". Moto voice is launched 3 times today from the TV. So I will be changing it back.
Mine is set to "OK Moto" and has not had any false starts.
I've been having this happen too! Changed phrases many times and often times and it keeps happening. Just changed it to abracadabra ... We'll see how that goes LOL

I've had MotoX' in the past. You have to train it in a dead silent room. Not even the humming from a computer or fans going off. None of that. I'm pretty sure it worked best when I locked myself in my car to train it. Silence is key
Sent from my Nexus 6
I need to re-train mine. Has anyone had issues with the distance? With my 2013 X I could talk from across the room, now it seems I need to be nearly on top of it for it to work.
Maybe re-training to a new phrase would help.
I trained mine last night. It did ask me to go to a quieter place. It was picking up a small fan running in my office. Keep in mind, I just got the phone yesterday. I have tried it a couple of times today with it laying on my desk and it seems to work fine.

Voice to text issues?

Is anyone else having an issue with Bixby voice to text? Where I completely disabled Bixby voice to text, but still leaving Google Voice to Text on. Then a few minutes later Bixby voice to text is turned on again, by itself, automatically. it overrides the Google voice to text, which I realized it when trying to use Google Voice to Text from the keyboard. It will end up opening Bixby voice to text, instead of Google voice to text.
I contacted Samsung about this twice. The first time, they never heard about this issue. Then the second time I called, they told me there is an issue with Bixby, but they don't know what to do to fix this and they don't know if and when a fix for Bixby is comming out.
Go to settings and select apps then hit menu button and select show system apps. Then find Samsung voice input and disable it. It then defaults to google voice to text. It works after reboot too.

That's exactly what I'm doing. But every few minutes continuously it turns Bixby voice to text back on in the same OS settings. When I try to use Google voice to text every few minutes or so, Bixby voice to text comes up instead of Google voice to text. Then when I go to the same settings again Bixby voice to text magically is turned on by itself. This is a repetitive cycle every few minutes.

When I changed the settings in language & inputs it kept doing what your describing but if your disabling Samsung voice to text there's no way it should be enabling itself. I have an s8 plus on T-Mobile and it works for me. I'd try to swap out your phone before it's been 14 days cuz Bixby sucks. Good luck!

I'm on my 3rd device because of multiple bugs. I fixed every bug except the Bixby Voice to Text issue, and a Wi-Fi issue. Till the point, I'm unable to use my Wi-Fi. I made another post on this site about it.
At least for the Wi-Fi and, they want me to send them the phone and remain without the phone for at least 2 weeks minimum. They keep saying they never heard of this issue, except the one representative who got multiple calls about it personally. Samsung has done absolutely nothing for me. I've called Samsung the last 4 consecutive days. Every time I called them about those issues they don't tell me yes, no, maybe, I don't know. They simply just want me to send them the phone. Today though I was able to get somebody show me the wanted to use my phone to figure out the problem because they claim they never heard about this. Even though all over the internet people are talking about this comma and even one Samsung representative confirmed she personally dealt with it on the phone last week.
What's going on with my Wi-Fi is that it connect to any network, the transparent box shows up and everything letting me know that is connected. 10 seconds later the transparent box comes again and tells me that network has been disconnected. And it repeats that non stop. This also happened across the 3 devices I've had. I'm not the only one to have the Wi-Fi issue, a simple Google search of this would indicate that. Even customer of other carriers such as AT&T, Verizon and my carrier T-Mobile are complaining about this as well. Like when I talk to Samsung I'm talking to a brick wall. I'm honestly about to return the phone and ask for a complete refund if I don't get an answer other than sending my phone in!
Thank you soooo much!!!!

This issue is still an ongoing issue for me. Every so often randomly, I would have to go into the settings like it's described here and turn off Bixby voice to text in the OS setting. For some reason Google Voice to Text can't seem to stay on without Bixby voice to text turning itself back on in the settings. Which then, even though Google voice to text is still on, Bixby voice to text overrides that, once it's turned on.
I reported this to Samsung like a month or 2 ago. All they want me to do is send in my phone, and remain without a phone for 2 weeks minimum(which I'm refusing to do). They claim there's nothing else they can do to help me, other than that.
I mean I'm getting upset, because I spend a lot of money on the device and I'm still having issues with this, and the Wi-Fi issue I stated above. Even after 3 exchange devices the same exact issues are occurring.
To bigj0110 - I can't thank you enough! I just got my S8 a couple days ago, and I hate the Samsung voice input. I couldn't figure out how to make it go away, and I thought I was stuck with it. Your suggestion worked! I'm so happy to have Google voice input back! You made me a very happy woman! Thanks! Jo Ann
Use Twiter
If you tweet using #Samsung or support they are quick to get back to you because they don't like the bad publicity on social media. I am having the same issues and think its time for everyone with a note 8 that is having issues demand a fix by blowing up twitter with bad publicity. What else can we do at this point?

Thanks MrB. this saved me lots of aggravation. voice to text works much better now.
Can't disable Samsung voice, the disable button is grayed out.
on my note 8 for turning bixby off, this what i did and not sure if this is what you want....
settings
general management
language input
on screen key board
+ manage keyboards
then on "Samsung voice input" toggle off
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
hit back arrow twice
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
text to speech
then touch the radio button on "Google Text_to_speech Engine"
>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
hit arrow back as much as you can then go to main screen, then try texting using voice.... for me, no more Bixby!!! YAY!!!!
I tried training Bixby but there was always a freeking probelm. I have patience, but this thing got to me.... bye Bixby.

Enhanced Messaging not turning on

Hey all!
I purchased my Essential phone brand new from Sprint yesterday. I switched from an S7. I'm trying to use the default android messages app (what I used on my S7) and I tried to enable enhanced messaging to receive stuff via WiFi. I get horrible reception at my desk in my office, so texting over WiFi is super helpful. Well, when I go to turn on enhanced messaging in the app, It just clocks, and eventually says "Excuse the wait... messages will let you know when this step is complete." I click "Got It", then it proceeds to do nothing...
Has anyone else figured how to turn on enhanced features on this device? Sprint is my carrier.

Has happened to me on all my devices I've owned when starting from a clean slate. Just give it time. Check back and reinitiate if needed. Think it has something to do with the carrier side network refresh to see your device or something.

Sorry, little bit longer on the reply this time. Lol. Busy day at work. But it's happened to me with different time lengths. It's been successful within 30 minutes and it's also taken up to 2 days. Sorry I can't be more help. Not sure of the technical side of things on what exactly causes it to know for sure and the fact that I'll just check it and it's done. Because of this, not always sure when exactly it went through either, just know that eventually it starts working and it's happened on my Essential and previous Nexus devices with Sprint, and that out of everything I'd try, time was the only thing that fixed it for me.
Hello I am experiencing the exact same issue with my new Essential phone through Sprint I purchased yesterday. Has your enhanced Features issue resolved itself yet? Any pointers? Sprint was absolutely no help.
Ana
Made me look. I'm on rooted Oreo 8.1, everything checked off.
