SM-T235Y Woes - Galaxy Tab 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey
I bought a Samsung Galaxy Tab 4 (t235y) from frys in the states to use with the t-mobile Smart Choice data plan, which includes roaming in Mexico and Canada
I am able to use the tablet flawlessly in the States, but when I cross over to Canada, at first the tablet would not register with any carrier, and after talking on the phone with Tech Support they were able to get it to register but I am not getting any data. I have tried changing apns, turning roaming off and on, hard resetting and everything.
I read somewhere that tmobile tracks the TAC code to identify that it is a tablet to allow it to access data (weird since it works in the States).
I want to try to put the original firmware of the T235 on the T235y - maybe to see if that would make it work.
My question is if I flash it with the t235 firmware, would it work or brick the unit?
Thanks

Hopefully Odin will not let you do this. If if it did, then yes, you would be stuck with a hard brick. And no way to fix it....

AT&T Tab with AT&T Data Connect plan with 3rd party ROM/modem?

Anyone out there using a 3rd party ROM/modem on an AT&T Galaxy Tab with an AT&T Data Connect plan (i.e. not one of the voice plans)?
I've been seeing an odd problem when on 3rd party ROMs where data would work at times, and then randomly stop working. Most of my experience came with various versions of Overcome (tried all sorts of modems) and JPE. I manually added the APN to be Broadband.
In order to get it working again, I'd have to do one of: (1) reselect the APN (2) toggle airplane mode or (3) reboot. It didn't always seem consistent which one of those was necessary.
I recently have tried returning to stock to see if that would solve the issue, and have managed to get it to mostly stock other than the bootscreens, and the issue seems to have disappeared. However, the problem was so random it's hard to know if it's gone for sure.
Can anyone who has an AT&T Tab and data-only plan talk about their experiences with it?
Wow, am I really the only one with an AT&T Tab and an AT&T data plan on this forum?
In that case, this thread should probably serve as a warning to anyone who ever gets an AT&T Tab and happens upon it, that:
1) AT&T Tabs must be running the AT&T stock ROM in order to reliably connect to AT&T data plans
2) If you flash any type of 3rd party ROM onto your AT&T Tab, you can never ever return 100% to stock. The AT&T Tab seems to have an incompatible bootloader with everything else, and even after restocking with my Roto Backup, I have permanently lost the boot animation and ability to boot recovery.
I am running Overcome, and the KM2 modem.
I get H,3G, Edge. super happy with it.
I recently upgraded to Overcome Jupiter (flashing a custom ROM for the first time), and bought another month of prepaid AT&T data to be sure everything still works okay. I've had no issues so far, no dropouts, errors, or anything. Can even stream Netflix over H/3G just fine! (only to test, it eats the data up quick!)
Hmm that's pretty interesting. You're both on AT&T Tabs right? With the AT&T Data Connect plan (I'm on the 14.99/month for 250MB variant)?
Did your Data Connect plan come pre-activated on your Tabs? If not, did you have any trouble when you first signed up?
I picked up my Data Connect plan (with a new sim) after using my Tab with no plan for a while, and when I went to activate the plan in Overcome, it was extremely fritzy. Even after setting the right APN info, it took a bunch of reboots and changing settings back and forth before it mysteriously started working after a reboot with settings I had already used. And my data has been fussy ever since, with multiple modems tried, and also trying the JPE ROM.
After reflashing to AT&T (minus all the messed up parts I noted) things seem to be well-behaved on the data front now.

Yep AT&T Tab with AT&T plan. I didn't have the data plan pre activated, did it myself on the internet a few months ago with the SIM that was in the Tab when I bought it slightly used on EBay. Bought the 2GB plan for a month on the stock ROM, then this month, got the 25MB plan on Overcome Jupiter to test it out after the upgrade. No issues signing up, or getting data after the upgrade.
BTW, forgot to mention, when I flashed Overcome, I went with the modem recommended in the Guide (JK3). No issues with that at all.
any of you guys have this all work with VOICE? ie, Overcome on AT&T tab, with 3G and modem that supports voice?
I don't and don't think I can test either. If I remember my research right, you need a different SIM for that that supports data and voice, the SIM that comes with the tab is a data only SIM.

Complete false statement.
I tested many EU/Asia tab modem worked well with at&t 2G/3G.
you always can 100% return to at&t stock firmware (if you get right one, or well backup one)

Regarding the first statement, that the connection to the AT&T Broadband APN requires stock, I now believe that I was wrong, and I may just have a hardware problem based on feedback from others.
However, there really is no way to go back to AT&T stock firmware, because the "right one" was never released. The other Galaxy Tabs can go back to stock, because their stock firmwares could be just pulled from Kies, but the AT&T Tab's firmware was never on Kies.
Like I said, I have a Roto Backup of my stock AT&T Tab. It still displays corrupted boot animations/recovery after restoring. If you search through the forums, there are other people that have run into this issue, and no one has ever reported being able to solve it.

Get one from Samfirmware.com, check P1000 section to look in at&t one (under provider), it pretty much compete restock to att stock firmware with original boot-loader.

So I'm looking at P1000 on Samfirmware:
http://www.samfirmware.com/WEBPROTECT-p1000.htm
I'm not seeing anything labeled AT&T in the provider section, are you saying one of those is the AT&T stock firmware?
I have a stock galaxy to the that I ordered with a data plan, and the connection disappears all the way if I open the android market. Once I kill the market the modem pops back up. This is very annoying to say the least. I wonder if you are opening the market when this connection issue occurs?

Mine did exactly the same thing when I opened the Market. I took it to an ATT store and they switched out the SIM card and it still did it. I flashed Overcome and have not had a drop out since and my speeds are great.

Nope, my problem seems quite random, isn't correlated to opening the market.

I've got exactly the same problem with my Samsung Galaxy Tab SGH-i987 with stock firmware, and this only happens on 3G, not Wi-Fi. Also, sometimes the Market works for a while if I reset the APN to the default (ATT Broadband).
I've gone through the whole SIM Card swap out process, and was about to start a warranty exchange. Seeing that others have been having the same problem and that there is a possible solution gives me hope.

I have a n9005 XEO that i bought on ebay. it was working fine for about 5 months now until a few days ago when it just stopped getting cellular signal altogether. no calls, no data, nothing. it seemed to corespond to me using towlroot, installing supersu, and a couple of xposed add-ons, but everything seemed to work fine for a few days before i had this problem. I tried making sure that airplane mode was off, data was enabled, that i had the apn settings correct for my provider (at&t, USA), I even went so far as to restore to factory settings, and then flash another rom (the stock s5 port i found here in the dev forum). still not getting cell signal at all). I went so far as to go to the local at&t store and ask them to place my sim in a known good phone to make sure it has service (and it does and is provisioned properly and i'm paid up). my note sees the sim (i.e. no "sim not found" messages), just plain no service as if i were in a dead zone. the phone hasn't been mishandled, i've tried pulling the battery and putting it back in... I can't think of anything i'm missing here besides trying to flash the modem (which i can't seem to find the stock modem (n9005xxuenc2) or firmware on a site that doesn't take 7 hours to download it from.
can anybody help? (either with a mirror that doesn't suck for the latest stock firmware or latest stock modem, or offer any other suggestions?)

Type in *#06# on your dialer. Do you get the same IMEI number as the one behind your battery?

it's an n9005 xeo from poland, I'm in the USA on AT&T. I downloaded the firmware successfully from sammobile and installed it with odin 3.07 which seemed to go successfully but I still get absolutely no cellular
I've tried using the default apn, tried using at&t's apn settings (which i remember having to do last time before i got data but i'd always been able to make calls and that's not working right now either), no effect...
anybody have any ideas?

So you're saying it worked perfectly for 5 months, and then suddenly it went haywire on you? Did you do any major changes before it happened?
I also tried flashing the XXUENC2 and ZHUENB5 modems from here with no effect.

as i noted I rooted it with towlroot, installed supersu, and a coupe of xposed add-ons. but everything was working afterwards for about a week before i had this problem. otherwise, I was using my phone one night, i wake up, and see that i have no service. it was after a big storm so i figured they were doing service on the tower, until my work iphone rings (on the same network) and that feeling of dread set in so i went about trying to diagnose the problem and here i am.

despite having done nothing unusual to the hardware, I've flashed modems (stock and otherwise), i've flashed roms (stock and otherwise) and it doesn't appear to effect my situation, so I can't help but think that this could be hardware related... I'm stuck and sad.

even if it were blacklisted, it should still allow me to place 911 calls and the like. it should work like a deactivated phone. it's not. just in case i was wrong, I also verified the imei on swappa and they confirm that it is indeed NOT blacklisted.
also i'm not sure why it would be blacklisted to begin with. it was working one day then i went to use it the next and bam, not working. i don't get it.

Sounds like your IMEI got tampered or stolen and got blacklisted. Usually this would happen, especially when buying phones online.

But I've used several reputable services to check my IMEI number and they all say that my imei is in good standing... I don't get it. besides, what causes an imei to be blacklisted to begin with? - I wasn't trying to circumvent any security features, had no malware, no reason at all for an accounts admin to want to get me off the network. my account is in good standing, and my sim still works in an old iphone that i've got (i'm using that until i can sort out my regular phone situation).

The fact that someone had the phone with them can easily get it stolen. It's a plain 15 digit number, easily forgeable just by looking at the box, and since it has no authentication, people can just get your phone blacklisted by placing it on a defunct phone that hacks the network (or something).
well tonight i took it apart to see if there was a problem with the antenna cables, connections to the various peripheral devices and such and alas, no effect... still does exactly the same thing after field stripping the unit and resenting everything. if it's hardware, it's nothing i can tell...
I was also able to generate a .pit file, grab the latest build for my csc from sammobile (takes forever) and did a nand erase in odin with the pit and the downloaded stock rom... everything went great, but it got me to exactly the same place i'm at... working phone, no service. I have no money, but i think i'm going to just end up ebaying it and buying an s3 until i can save up enough for a note 4 or nexus 6... for now, i'm on a crappy old iphone 4 with a broken lock button, but that's another thread.
well it's been about a month and a half since i've had a decent phone (my 3 phones ago iphone 4 really doesn't cut it). after giving it some thought, I think i might buy a broken-screen sm-n900t, and swap it's mainboard into my phone. hardware-wise i believe they are exactly the same, it should be easily rooted with unlocked baseband,it would give me LTE on at&t, and it should be easily unlocked so i can use it on at&t... it should also only cost me 1/8 the cost of a good condition used n900t. ($60 or so on ebay i hope?).
still pretty sad that such a nice phone quit on me so quickly

Why don't you swap the N9005's screen onto the N900T and keep it like that? The N900T if I can recall, has the most bands available worldwide and if you're already replacing it, just enjoy the vast amount of customizations and potential the N900T has.
Did you pursue all avenue including Samsung service/repair centre or even Samsung line enquiry to confirm it's not blacklisted?

that's basically the plan, except the motherboard lives on the display side of things, so it would be swapping in a new motherboard (n900t). we both describe the same plan of action.

Try to get at least an inactivated Verizon sim card from any Verizon store or you can also try a normal working Verizon sim. I had AT&T Galaxy S5 and it needed the carrier's sim card to even check for update. I took the sim, put it in, checked for update and was able to install it.
Fix to your issue
Hey guys so I do also share the same situation, I have a Verizon s8+ yet I have T-Mobile One as my coverage
Because it's not authenticated as a Verizon provided account it simply won't update
Now.. the solution to updating isn't directly on your device.
It's within the Samsung Smart switch App for either Mac or windows, you can run an update through there with little to no problems at all and finally keep your device up to date without having to return it for an unlocked one.
Just a brief note regarding the smart switch App, keep in mind that sometimes the update will freeze at a certain percentage on the computer so just be sure to close the app out only if your Samsung device hasn't received the green upload screen yet.
Hopefully this helps out alot of you guys ?
Best regards

I'd like to flash mine to t mobile, I'm begging you to help me with this!!!
Sent from my SM-G955U using Tapatalk
I've seen a bunch of info on the forums on how to flash the T-Mo ROM on an s8 - as well as flashing the Samsung Unlocked ROM on the s8 but frankly, almost all the threads are from back at the phone launch - and it is unclear to me which roms & programs to search for.
In a similar vein - I'm a noob to the whole process using oden - which I think is what i would need to use. I have experience from years ago running cyanogen mods on a nook tablet and messing with windows phones - but nothing recent and things have changed a lot.
I've read conflicting reports throughout the forums on doing this...
I'm running a VZW Branded (but it's now "unlocked")
Model: s8 SM-G-950U
Build #: NRD90M.G950USQS2BQL1
Baseband #: G950USQS2BQL1
What I'm looking for (really the right word is "NEED"):
Access to lower 700 A block (full band 12 use)
Ability to get OTA Updates
Mobile Hotspot Functionality
WiFi Calling
VoLTE
Bixby
If I could have these all running the Samsung Unlocked ROM - then that would be preferred...
If not - I would want to flash the T-Mobile ROM.
I need to know ASAP as I only have 14days from today (2/14/18) to figure this out or go back to VZW
Many thanks!

New unlocked AT&T tablet SM-T727A for grandparents abroad, to flash or not?

Hello, please give a little advise.
I bought an UNLOCKED used Samsung AT&T S5e (SM-T727A), and another UNLOCKED used Samsung Sprint TAB A (2019) (SM-T517P) from eBay for my grandparents abroad in Argentina; mainly for the SIM capability to use with Whatsapp with me, and their grandkids all over the world.
I have no experience with LTE tablets, but have rooted phones here and there since 2012 thanks to you guys.
I feel very hesitant to root, or install roms on these tablets, since I won't be able to be there for them if anything happens, other than remote assistant pre-programmed for them to hit one button, but even then... the struggle a lot with basic things, and only know Whatsapp.
I have put my SIM card from T-mobile on my Note 8 here in the US on both devices, but although the T-mobile LTE text appears on top, none of the tablets changed Startup intro, or installed T-mobile apps/Removed AT&T or Sprint apps. The Sprint tablet shows an annoying Sprint OMADM notification, and the AT&T tablet won't let me use the dialer.
Both tablets can use LTE from T-mobile fine with great speeds, but need to use alternate dialer to make calls.
Should I install custom ROMS on these to remove their carrier's bloatware? Am I definitely tripping KNOX on them? Will installing these rooms, or unlocking bootloaders mess up with future updates, and leave my grandparents stranded?
Please help; what should I do?
unlocked AT&T Galaxy 727a tablet
I am wondering if you ever got a response to your questions? I too have the same tablet and I want to root it to remove the AT&T software because I also use T-Mobile. I am going to keep searching here in the forums. I don't think I want to flash a rom though as I kind of like the Samsung feel right now. Plus I only had it 2 days so far.

I am still searching, this is my first LTE tablet, and I believe we ARE NOT meant to use ROMs for the WiFi variant on it (maybe wrong), so that leaves flashing lots of ROMS out... there maybe a few out there, but I doubt many DEVs have these devices available to work on.
Anyway, I decided against flashing roms for now; my only problem with the AT&T Tablet now is that the default Google dialer will not work unless it's with AT&T, so I have to use third party dialers now... no good.
I read somewhere that you can change something called the CSC of the tablet without rooting or flashing, to maybe get rid of the AT&T bloatware, and maybe T-mobile bloatware will let me use Google dialer??? I will try putting my T-mobile SIM today, and do a factory reset of the tablet with the T-mobile SIM in it. This has worked for me in the past with phones by the way, but never tried tablets before.
I may also try using Titanium Backup, and freeze some of these apps, but that will require rooting I believe, and I don't want to do that yet because I worry that unlocking the bootloader will leave that ugly "bootloader unlocked" message on every boot.
luck?

Have you had any luck, I also have this tablet.
I am with the same problem, I have a Galaxy Tab S5e LTE tablet (SM727A), which is unlocked, but it does not allow me to make normal calls (like a cell phone) due to the AT&T call launcher. does anyone know any way to make calls? I have the tablet outside the USA
This thread is a year and a half old without an answer, doesn't seem right, I have similar issue why no answer?
I am in the US, and I can't get calls to work with Samsung s5e SM-T727UZKAXAA Unlocked Tablet.
Ordered this tablet for my elderly mother with the idea it could basically becone a 10 inch phone for her since she has serious difficulty seeing even the largest phone displays.
I took out her Motorola One sim and inserted it into the new tablet. After all the software updates were complete, I have network connectivity, data (seems slow tbh), and can eveb send/receive texts, but it will not receive calls? This tablet has that functionality, so I'm trying to figure out what exactly I'm missing?
I am using T-Mobile, and am on the Magenta MAX plan for all 3 of my lines including this one that I tried. Any help at all appreciated, thank you.

Buy a global version like SM-T725 to use full feartures.
Unlock version give you Data connection, sms, but you need connect to Samsung phone to call.

so i had ordered one i had to cancel when i saw this post.
and wanted to ask. if there is any way to install android auto as a system app on this model?

Sprint phone T-Mobile network root, new T-mobile sim, and still...

I'm so very hesitant to even try to root my phone or do anything with it because I just don't understand Android and I don't honestly have the time to learn it right now. And I mean that literally I have so much going on with trying to teach myself auto repair and keep myself from getting towed so my dog and I will not lose our home. But it seems to me that when I took it to T-Mobile and they switched out my sim there was an improvement but whether it's not being able to make a receive calls or not being able to access mobile data and now it just being so unbelievably slow but technically functioning correctly, I still can't believe that it won't benefit from a root or flashing a universal ROM. But I just don't understand Android and my illness doesn't make it any easier to understand or handle. I can't get rid of the Sprint apps and I cannot use T-Mobile's app and I assume that's because it didn't actually flash the firmware. When my a13 screen broke, I swapped it Sim into this S7 which I was fortunate to have access to and it sort of worked but I didn't have mobile data at that time so I have to take it to T-Mobile and have them help me figure it out we changed access points and long story short I simply cannot load a T-Mobile app even now. This is obviously the results of some sort of conflict within the firmware software whatever I don't know I don't have the ability to comprehend it. But it is unlocked I see the OEM unlock option it even says it's unlocked I see T-Mobile network... You know a picture is worth a thousand words can anybody help me make this phone fully functional? It's just a few more days I'll get a benefit check and I'm getting a new phone but I guess I've become slightly spoiled because I can't handle 2 minutes to load an app in my chaotic life. But I can figure it out I believe if somebody just points me in the right direction. But I always get that one detail wrong when I try to figure it out myself.
I apologize for any rules that I might have broken because I can't seem to not break a rule when I post on forums even after reading and watching videos on forum etiquette guidelines.

So to make sure I understand what you're asking...You're trying to use your phone on the T-Mobile network, but it shows Disconnected under Mobile Network and you're unable to make calls or use data, correct?
Unlocking the bootloader shouldn't affect this, nor should the ROM if you're using the factory Galaxy S7 firmware.
When exactly did this stop working, and did you do anything to the phone that may have been related to this problem?

Okay, thank you. I realized I had not done a factory reset, and so I did. As expected, I now cannot use mobile data, make or receive calls. Ive only ever entered recovery mode. Never had stock firmware. And when I factory reset, as I'm entering recovery aqa plop l mb drew it looked like it was updating firmware only to be followed by the little android guy looking like he's dead with "no command" or something to thateffect. .I'm on public. The S7 is a Sprint phone, I'm on the Magenta Max plan at T-Mobile. I still have the new SIM that the rep put in at a T-Mobile store, and while I can't use data or calls, it is performing as I would expect of a phone this old. And I still have sprint apps, of course, T-Mobiles app won't stop crashing. And I just need to know a few things. It's the CSC codes I don't quite understand. If I found y exact phones model firmware on Updato where it says to make certain you download the correct firmware... will this not just reinstall Sprint Firmware. The way I interpret all the warnings is if you download g930u or g930t and flash it, you will brick the phone.
So I want to be certain, is XAA, universal?
And I'm continuing writing this reply after getting back home, I did T-Mobile's access point again and now I have the ability to text and receive texts I can go online without Wi-Fi but I cannot make calls. Modem issue correct? I just don't understand how that works with cellular. And I have this funny feeling that nobody at any T-Mobile store will know anything as much as you people do. So once again thank you so freaking much.
One more thing this means by the phrasing of it that it's not unlocked but I can unlock it right? Or is it such an old phone that its somehow is just a flick of a switch and it's unlocked?

Okay, so you used this phone on Sprint and brought it over to T-Mobile? Sprint and TMobile are totally different networks, Sprint is (was) CDMA and TMobile is GSM. The two are not compatible. If your S7 is a Sprint specific variant (G930P) I don't think you can use it on TMobile and will have to get a new phone.

There are a few CSCs, but they honestly don't matter. Just use any North American one. The CSC isn't the same as your device model. You shouldn't use G930U on anything but a G930U.

Cell phones use digital radios. The modem is the chipset that handles all the wireless communication. Like I said before, it's possible that your G930P isn't compatible with the TMobile network.
My suggestion: Call T-Mobile. If they gave you the SIM knowing what phone you were going to use, they should help you get it working. It sounds to me like a network provisioning issue, and that's not something anyone here will be able to help with.
i reformatted because it was my fathers, i had **** on there i didnt need to access, see or have cluttering. and a fresh start never hurts any tech in 99% of cases in my experience. it boot just fine. but it was once again a purely sprint phone. i knew it would be, but i think i was only able to make calls because the new T-Mobile SIM was affected by the reset to Sprint variation of the stock firmware. stock is fresh from Samsung with no bloatware. no alterations, there is factory reset, and factory reset from an originally unlocked no carrier ever assigned firmware. correct me if anything is wrong there. but i do think i just need to go to tmobile again to get my phone call function back. but does this mean i can never remove the the sprint startup logo, bloatware (with is any sprint app in my mind thus not stock) And never will be able to use a t-mobile app? if my phone is version 8 oreo, the baseband or pda is the same, as is everything except the fact that my model is a 930P and not 930T then the 930T will potentially break it?
additional questions, in recovery with no bootloader what is apply update from SD or ADB, is that anything firmware related if i do another factory reset and can ODIN or the firmware itself be loaded on my sd and flash itself?
im on a laptop and thats something im more familiar with by comparison. but custom desktops are my forte. a desktop you modify all you want and you can generally very easily fix a mistake. laptops, a tiny mistake and its taken me 6 months to just today think i can save it and save myself a 1000s buck likely. im learning the true definition of proprietary gree.... ahem software and hardware. I cant install and NVIDIA 1660ti graphics driver from NVIDIA directly and unless Lenovo modifies it i lose my display and cannot see what i need to fix. this concept is my question in regards to g930p to g930 u or XAA versions. of 8.0 oreo with everything matching except nowhere on my phone is the CSC code of SPR for sprint.
lastly, my theory is that i thought tmobile bought sprint, if they did, it makes sense T-Mobile wants to slap somthing on a product or software as a big HAHA because of how customer service quality has plummeted worldwide to appalling levels. its disgusting. but ill stop there or ill write a novel on that.
regardless i thank you all for your help. i will live till i get my social security check, but i need to bring an extra two battery banks. my NOCO CAR JUMPSTARTER died trying to keep it alive for a 2 hour long appointment. todays apps just demand too much and too many apps are secretly recording, tracking, advertising and hell in all likelyhood nefariously intended functions. just think of McAfee virus, damn near impossible to get rid of and used to be harder, costs a fortune, slows your rig and a hacker still sent a power surge into my pc killing that 3K PC desktop. smart but careless cause he somehow left screenshots of the DDOS program he used when accessing my OneDrive.
i like information, sorry to blather on, most is useless probably but hopefully you find a diamond in all that rambling.
