The following link is a very good read about how Project Fi works. Things touched upon:
1. The Google Fi SIM has two profiles
2. The active profile switches between networks
3. Switching networks is fast, but not instantaneous
4. Calls do handover from Wi-Fi to cellular…
5. …but not seamlessly…
6. …and don’t transfer back
7. Calls do not handover between cellular networks
8. Data does not handover between networks
9. The Google Fi SIM does work in other phones
10. Global roaming is done only through T-Mobile

Yeah, I had a basic idea of how it worked before, but this article definitely opened my eyes a bit. The tech behind it is pretty amazing actually. But I was surprised to learn that once it handsoff to cellular, it stays there until the call has ended. I thought it just kept switching.
Imagine if Google bought/absorbed bandwith/republic wireless....
Project salsa would add cell to WiFi handover.
Maybe more plan options?
I left them when I realized rom updates were going to take eons to happen. And I wasn't a huge fan of moto x.

One big quibble I have with the article's test methodology is that the tester enters the debug dialer codes to force switching between carrier networks, observes and times that switching behavior, and then jumps to the unsupported conclusion that automatic switching functions the same way.
interesting read, thanks for posting.
I just tested the SIM card in a 1 + one phone and I could make and receive call..
I will try the SIM in a window phone..
Worked fine on Blue cheap window phone, t-mobile was the carrier to place call where I'm..
Great..
What is exactly the Nexus 6 exclusive then?

There is a lot more to Project Fi functionality than just making a call on T-Mobile. It has dynamic switching between Sprint and T-Mobile, as well as WiFi.
Interesting. I thought Fi advertised cell call handoff to wifi when entering buildings.

I have been entering the sprint code every couple hrs to get my calls to work. Project Fi support has no idea why or what is going on. The had me run a bug report. Hopefully that will get this resolved. Any one else on Project Fi having this issue?
Jayson
Still waiting to hear back from Project Fi team. I just spoke with the Nexus support team and was told there is no going back to 6.0 from 6.0.1. The tech I spoke with said that they have logged 7 calls with the same issue me. Mine now makes it 8.
Even though I am a bit frustrated with this issue Google support folks are 1000 times more knowledgeable and easier to work with than Verizon. This company gets how to treat and deal with customers.
Still not working yet. Google is going to give me credit for the inconvenience but I am beginning to lose faith in them getting this resolved. Switches back to T-Mobile and I keep missing calls. Uhhhhg. I really want to stay with Project Fi but I may be forced to look elsewhere for cellular service.
Have you tried *#*#34963#*#* ?
I had a similiar issue to you.
Where I live and where I work I get a stronger signal from Sprint than T-mobile.
After I updated my phone to 6.0.1 I had problems connecting to Sprint's network.
I used the "FI XME" dialer code and that seemed to fix my issue:
*#*#34963#*#*
I found a post in the Nexus 6 forums with the Project Fi dialer codes:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6/general/project-fi-fi-dialer-codes-to-force-t3132393
Another reference for the Project Fi dialer codes:

Hope this helps.
I'm not on FI, got the sim card just haven't switched yet lol. Ummmmmm see my thread my phone is getting horrid LTE speeds, I put in a ticket. And I'm on T-Mobile this is crazy

Does T-mobile service work where you are, did you have it before?
Yes. T mobile is strongest signal where I am . Worked great until the update.
Look up it may be related to this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6p/help/lte-issues-6-0-1-radio-canadian-carriers-t3267270

Ah yes then that's a problem, the Google update to 6.0.1 has caused all kinds of radio problems so let's hope they fix it quickly.
My issue seems a different. The Data and texting works fine on WiFI only, Sprint and T-Mobile. The issue is calling in and out on T-Mobile. Instant failure.
I'm having the same problem but I think it only happens when the phone connects to band 12 LTE on T-mobile. It seems that VoLTE isn't working properly. Can you check what T-mobile band you are on using this app:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.blueline.signalchecklite
Says Provider: T-Mobile B4
I'm having the issue where my data speeds suck. Since update

Be careful! I did this on my last 6P and it completely messed up my radio and prevented me from making calls on Sprint (no it wasn't because of the SIM card as I tried 3 of them) . I had to RMA my device. My advice is not to mess with that menu. I have done it on other devices without issue but it seems as though once selected it cannot be undone.
I just found out yesterday that the engineers have not even looked at my bug reports yet. They were sent to them yesterday from what I was told. They also had me order a new sim card as well to rule that out. The support or lack there of up to yesterday has be ridiculously unacceptable. I get the feeling that they are just trying to pacify me and not doing anything in hopes that a new release will come out an magically fix this issue. Very frustrating.
Problem Fixed. After dealing with this for several days I asked a supervisor how long was acceptable to leave a customer with an open issue affecting cellular service and to be missing calls. He provided me a RMA and a new phone was sent. All seems to be work with the New replacement phone they sent.

Yes be very careful in that menu. I was just looking at the menu and my finger some how hit a different band. Took me about 4 hours to figure out how to fix it. There are some tuts here on that issue that will help. Also there's a way to get the international bands to show up
Hello, fellow Fi users!
It has finally gotten on my nerves enough to create a thread, hoping to find some answers or perhaps work together to come to a solution for Project Fi's dreadfully slow carrier switching logic. I'm not sure about others, but in my town and the surrounding areas, T-Mobile has excellent service. My town is the only town in the county that does not have Sprint LTE, but I do get some 3G in certain areas. The problem is that when I lose connection with T-Mobile for a certain amount of time, the phone will switch over to Sprint to use its 3G network. This is great because this is how the phone and SIM card are supposed to function. However, the 3G service in this area is slow, spotty, and unreliable so typically as soon as I connect (usually while driving or on the move) I lose service again.
The real problem occurs when the phone is extremely reluctant to switch back to T-Mobile. Almost every day I make a 25 minute commute to work that takes me along a route where T-Mobile service drops off for a minute or two. During this gap in coverage, the phone switches to Sprint. I experience one brief moment of Sprint coverage, and then lose that as well (mountainous area). At this point, the phone should search for Sprint service for a few more seconds and then attempt to switch back to T-Mobile. Instead, it stays on Sprint and will continue to do so for the rest of my commute. I have Sprint LTE coverage at my job, but it's the return trip back home that results in my phone sometimes having no service elongated periods of time. Many times I'll look down at my phone while out to dinner after work or something and notice I have no service and haven't for some time. It's simply stuck on Sprint mode instead of switching.
This has forced me to pay for and download FiSwitch on the Play Store. I'm not too upset about this, but I feel like it'd be a bit of fun to maybe try to modify the logic in Fi's networking switching. Now, I don't know if it's possible to actually modify the logic, or where the actual logic resides. But perhaps writing a script or something in Tasker or Trigger could suffice.
The Correct Way to Handle Network Switching?
There are many different areas of coverage and every situation is unique. But I feel like there is some piece of code in there that prevents the phone from constantly switching between Tmo and Sprint. I also understand that this is extremely new, unique and is a work in progress, as Fi hasn't even been out for a year. But if others also experience this issue, perhaps we can find a way to mitigate the problem of the phone getting stuck on one carrier and not switching to another.
Luckily, I have a lot of free time at my job, so I drew up a quick flowchart to show how I'd like to handle carrier switching.
For you savvy coders out there, this would just be a series of conditional statements, which are extremely easy to write, implement and test. Assuming I can't actually modify the logic written somewhere into the phone or the Project Fi app, I'm going to have to make a script or something perhaps in tasker. I can use dialer codes to force the phone to switch to a different carrier, just like FiSwitch does. I feel like it'd be pretty easy to implement, but I'm not sure if it's even possible.
Has anyone else experienced frustration with Fi's carrier switching? I want to know if this is just an isolated case because of topography of my area (Suburban valley, slightly mountainous) or if this is an issue experienced by users elsewhere as well.
I don't appear to have your switching problems. If I loose T-Mobile, it'll switch to Sprint. If I loose Sprint, it'll switch to T-Mobile. If I'm on Sprint's 3G, it'll switch to T-Mobile as soon as possible (available).
I'm using the beta Android N, but I don't remember there being a problem with switching when I was on MM. There could have been, I just don't remember.
Fi stays on whatever carrier has a higher quality signal, and more reliable! More bars doesn't necessarily mean a better quality signal! "QUALITY"is what i want if sprint with 2 bars is stronger and faster than tmo with 4 bars than i want sprint! Whatever's better! I'm sure the fi team spent countless hours and $$$ on developing this software, code, service whatever you wanna call it

That's their claim. But the Fi support forum has many posts from people where this does not happen. Here's a typical example where the phone switches from one to another, then stays on the weak carrier.
https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/project-fi/ucFRJiKp4Co;context-place=forum/project-fi
I've seen others where the guy and his wife both had 6Ps and his would change to the good network at home, but hers would stay on the weak one.
I noticed myself that even though Tmobile has good coverage at my house, when I forced my phone onto Sprint just to verify it could connect, that it stayed on Sprint even though the signal was barely there. I left it to see if it would switch, but it didn't until sometime overnight. I also once was in a parking lot while trying to see if it would switch automatically and it got down to no connection on Sprint. I rebooted and it connected to 4 bars on Tmobile.
My experience was when I was first on the service. Since then, as far as I know it works ok. My phone is always on Tmobile except in extremely rare instances where it'll switch. Which makes sense where I live in Southern California, because Sprint has always been awful, while Tmobile has added lots more towers recently. The only times it was switched on its own was on the subway (yes there is one here), and at the airport in a certain lounge. I knew from experience that there's no Tmobile signal there, except Tmobile wifi calling would work on the wifi. Last time there, it connected to Sprint on its own, though the signal was weak. But both of those times, it correctly switched back to the much better Tmobile connection on its own.
Glad to hear I'm not the only one with this issue. I'm currently working on a Tasker profile to mitigate this issue. Will take some time to test and perfect, however. I'm still new to Tasker, so there's a lot of trial and error going on here. I wish I could just write something in c++ or JavaScript and have it handle this task instead. I'd be done already lol.

Why can't you? The source code is available, isn't it? A daemon can't be written to load on boot, poll for the strongest signal (at an interval) and switch when a stronger signal is present?

That's normal, if you use the dialer codes or apps to force it to a single carrier, it will stay on that carrier until you run the dialer code to re-enable auto switching.

I forgot to add that to my post. I ran the dialer code to switch, then dialer code to set back to auto. Which is why it switched on its own sometime overnight. When I was in the parking lot, the reason I rebooted was because I wasn't even sure there was a Tmobile signal since I assumed absolutely no Sprint signal would have triggered it.

Howdy -
FWIW - I believe the forced-carrier-switch-by-dialer-code "expires" over time... I am not really sure on that window, but it doesn't seem to stick after a reboot anyway, and I've heard folks say things revert to the "auto" scenario after a couple hours.
Also - FiSwitch happens to be my little tinkering/learning project... I'm not sure I can be of any help but I'd be willing to try I know there is a way to use FiSwitch via Tasker, though that may be a bit redundant if you can fire off the dialer codes without it... just thought I'd toss that out there anyway!
I'm having the same problem. Project Fi worked perfectly on my Nexus 6P but the service has been terrible since I got a Pixel XL. Fi will switch me to Sprint and leave me with no bars for hours unless I manually switch to T-Mobile and then I will get full bars. The network switching actually does work--but it seems to do so very poorly, at least on this particular phone. Fi support has been no help at all.
Btw the dialer code command does expire over time. Even when I manually switch to T-Mobile if I go out for a drive the network will switch to Sprint at some point, regardless of the strength of the Sprint signal.
So, when I woke up this morning I noticed my cell signal strength icon was one I haven't seen before. I tried rebooting and toggling airplane mode. I also verified that my sim is working in another device. I attached a screen cap with the icon.
Noticed something similar with mine. I had to turn wifi off, restart to get LTE data (verizon) then turn wifi back on. If restarting with wifi on the LTE data doesn't register.
that didnt work for me
update: had to factory reset, looks like verizon doesnt like that essential ph1 wont take all their bloatware, etc. might have to return the phone if this keeps up
My data connection has also become very erratic - and I've lost voice+data (VoLTE connectivity) wholly yesterday. Worked fine with the activated SIM from my HTC 10 from the 31st to yesterday.. Now, not at all, I've not been able to restore it since.
Really don't want to return it, as I really like the phone, but this has nexus 5x issues written all over it for long term use...
Hoping essential can get a certification and an agreement with Verizon before my return window is over (or at all)..
Pretty disappointed in Verizon here.

Same here, another issue is that essential shipped my phone and within a day i had an email from essential saying that verizon certification is still in progress. verizon will probably not certify it with their system unless essential lets them install their monitoring crap all over the phone.

The Nexus 6P didn't have the bloat and worked fine.
My PH-1 works fine including Enhanced 4G LTE Mode.
What do you have selected for network type?
I have the first one selected because that's the only one that includes the various CDMA protocols, EVDO and LTE.
I see the same connectivity that I had with my Nexus 6P.
i have global selected, as it covers everything the phone can connect to. i had the first one selected but it wouldnt show the lte+, just regular lte. i also have Enhanced 4g lte mode on. it just happened to lose service earlier today. if it does it again, ill probably return it after a visit to vzw

I have the same settings as you, I had functional "enhanced 4G LTE" for the first 4 days as well... That ended yesterday morning abruptly, and I'm not able to bring it back.. There's more happening here.. How long has your device been on the Verizon network? Only a hunch - in a few days you won't have "enhanced 4G LTE" either, even though it'll still be checked, and provisioned for it.

Cellular network is not available
After 7 days my phone won’t make calls I can only use data I’m on sprint and it was working fine until today I call sprint they had no answers at all I email essential no answer now I can only use WiFi calling while home and axx out at work
So, upon further digging I found a place to look at some more in-depth stuff relating to signal stuff. I did some fooling around and switched it from unknown to lte/cdma/umts auto (prl) and it seemed to work after a few moments of time. Though it seems have gone back to t he unknown state again but is working normally for me now, so maybe it was changing states and then a reboot?
How I got to this screen was by punching *#*#4636#*#* into the dialer, and went to phone info
I'm having a similar issue. I often lose my signal. I will have the full triangle/bars but no label of the signal(LTE+/LTE/3G/1x/etc....) and no cellular data at all.
The only way I can get it to return is to restart the device. Happens a few times a day, can't be 100% sure why, but it often appears to be when switching from WiFi -> Cellular only.
I have Verizon, I have had a Nexus 6 and then a Pixel XL for the past 3 years, never once had this issue.
I had constant disconnects and lost of service with my Tmo sim. Tried my Xfinity (VZW) sim and it was great until this morning. Complete lost of service. Airplaned mode on and off, connected to old school RTT 1x.... lol This phone's cellular just plain suck for a lot of us regardless of carrier. Not sure if we just have bad phones because apparently there are those who claim they have great service and connection.
I'm having this problem with Verizon. Seems like if I'm on wifi for a long period it only connects to 1x and putting in airplane mode and stuff won't get it to re-connect to to LTE. Only a reboot seems to fix the problem.

You might check out my post from the Oreo Beta thread... I was having some goofy signal issues early on which I've pretty much cleared up by doing what I mentioned here. Someone touched on it briefly earlier but only mentioned monkeying around with the settings, said nothing about picking up a new PRL.
I state this in that post too, but just in case: I offer this with no express intent of warranty, if you screw up your device, it's on you.

I had, right after writing this, tried *#*#4636#*#*
I set it to global as instructed in another post. The next time I drive a distance in the car I'll have to see if I have the same issue that only a reboot would fix again.
Thanks
I had the same issue and I resolved it a little differently than the previous posters. I turned on adb debugging and logged into adb shell and user-disabled com.redbend.app. This stops the Sprint oma-dm service from running. After doing this I no longer have the issue of my device not reinitializing lte after sleep or 3g.
I have essential on vzw but my only issue is my device won't connect to 4G. If I change network to LTE I get full 4G service but I'm unable to make phone calls. Went into vzw store and they told me you didn't get the phone from us so we cant help you. Day 14 fml
On Xfinity mobile, I had similar issues. Great LTE but sometimes calls just don't work at all. I mess with various settings and it'll work for a bit then so again. Gave up and ported over to Sprint for the free unlimited year which is still probably not worth it. Should've kept with Xfinity Mobile. Lol
BLUF:
If your Verizon account does NOT have HD Voice enabled and the essential phone has "Enhanced 4G LTE Mode" enabled (which is a default setting) you may not be able to make/receive phone calls.
I had an older phone running a lineage fork that did NOT support HD Voice. For whatever reason that also means it isn't enabled on my Verizon account. It doesn't cost anything extra and isn't plan specific but until you enable on a phone (says VZW Tech) the setting stays off.
When I put my SIM into the new Essential phone I could make calls but it would NOT find a new tower. IF i was driving any distance I had to reboot the phone completely to get data or make calls.
As of a few days ago my data was always working (LTE+) but suddenly I could not make or receive any calls. Again, texting, internet, etc. was fine. (yes wifi was off to test this =)
I was on with VZW support trying to fix this when my essential trouble ticket was answered with:
Given that you are getting the LTE+ icon already, can you try this step and see if it helps:
Go to Settings -> More -> Cellular Networks
Disable "Enhanced 4G LTE Mode"
Make a phone call
Return to the Settings menu and re-enable Enhanced 4G LTE Mode

VZW said give it a try lets see. With it "off" I could suddenly make calls. With it back on I couldn't again.
VZW said I bet that's what we call "HD Voice" and I see its not enabled on your phone. He enabled it. I rebooted. Everything works again with that setting on or off.
I emailed this back to essential just to let them know what I did with VZW and got reply:
My understanding was "HD voice" was enabled on all smartphone accounts with Verizon, but I will add that as a step to check in the future.

I've been troubleshooting this with VZW and Essential for a while so very happy to find fix. I also went out and got a brand new SIM but that also didn't help. Both new and old sim worked in old phone fine but in essential no luck.
I had at first though unlocking bootloader / rooting had done something . I wiped and reflashed this thing 4 times yesterday trying different things to no avail.
I know some other Verizon uses were having weird issues so wanted to share.
I'll prolly never get so lucky with tech support synergy again in my life... but at least this one time they were quickly helpful.

Using the phones on Sprint.
Since three weeks or so, while on LTE, the incoming voice calls are going directly to voice mail.
Sprint looked at it and changed the Network to 3G and now getting a ring for the incoming calls.
Basically, I am forced to run the phones on 3G service.
Need to go to a service center (which is very far for me) to have the phone looked at.
Anyone facing similar issue?
PS: 2 of the 3 PH-1 phones I have, are having the issue.

Google have updated the dialer recently several times, could it be a bug that shows on Sprint, or do you have spam settings on, which I know has caught other people out. Check/play with spam settings in her dialer app.
(other areas I might check (if not dialer or network). I assume all phones were working before correctly, right? Are they different sims or the same sim in different phones? New sims, ie not old one you have cut down hat are old spec. Do lte settings match on different phones?)

Same issue. Did you get it fixed?
I also have this problem on Sprint.
Sometimes restarting the phone fixes the issue, sometimes it doesn't.
Between this and no longer being able to use Google Voice without using a separate number, I think it's time for me to bail on Sprint.
My wife had this issue a bit back. Only happened when the phone was using VoLTE (verified by a debug menu, *#*#4636#*#*, showing both voice/text and data marked as LTE).
Fix was to disable the Enhanced 4G LTE communications option, which forced the phone too fallback to nonVoLTE while still using LTE for data. Again confirmed using the phone information menu which showed voice as 1xRTT and data as LTE.
Hope this help and that we can get a better fix soon.

Any time...
I love sharing my time with ungrateful idiots that can't bother to read or need the red carpet rolled out for them...
Good luck with your device... Hope you drop it in the river

Didn't work for me either but I figured it out... what I had to do is change a setting under Google Voice in Settings under the tab CALLS change to "Use carrier only" and I did have to turn VoLTE off. I left the Preferred network type as LTE. Phone is working well now, with T-mobile and Google Voice I have been testing it all morning.
