So Ive had my Note 4 for a nice bit, but now its time to stack it up against its in house brothers. Ive got in my stock an AT&T Samsung Galaxy S5 and a Wifi only Note 10.1 2014.
Both are the newest in their segments from Samsung, both packing some pretty great hardware. Lets break down how they compare with a few benchmarks. The two of which I decided to use was 3D Mark and Vellamo.
First I want to go over a brief overview of the specs for the unfamiliar.
Note 10.1 -Wifi only
Screen: 10.1" WQXGA Clear LCD (2560 x 1600), 299 ppi
CPU: Exynos® 5 Octa (1.9GHz Quadcore + 1.3 GHz Quadcore)
GPU: ARM Mali T628MP6 (6 Core)
RAM: 3Gb
Memory: 16GB with 32Gb Class 10 Micro SD
Sprint Note 4
Screen: 5.7” Quad HD Super AMOLED (2560 x1440), 515 ppi
CPU: Snapdragon 805 Quadcore 2.7GHz
GPU: Adreno 420
RAM: 3Gb
Memory: 16Gb with 16Gb Class 10 Micro SD
Galaxy S5
Screen: 5.1” FHD Super AMOLED (1920 x 1080), 432 ppi
CPU: Snapdragon 801 2.5 GHz
GPU: Adreno 330
RAM: 2Gb
Memory: 16Gb with Class 10 Micro SD
I would like to note that all of these devices are stock, used often, and not enhanced from their factory setting in any way.
LETS GET READY TO RUMBLE!
3D Mark:
Note 10.1 This unit scored a number of 13513. I do want to make note that 3D mark has removed the device from caparisons as it was flagged for unfair modification to boost benchmark results. That being said, this turned out to be the runt of the litter despite the Octa-Core CPU in this benchmark.
Note 4 This device scored a whopping 20159 on this benchmark. With superior hardware to its brothers it bests even the iPhone 6 Plus which is scored at a modest 17843 and the iPhone 6 which is ranked even lower at 17307 on 3D Marks comparison charts.
Galaxy S5 This device ranked at a nice 18217. Besting both of Apples newest attempts and bumping along just short of Note 4.
Vellamo
This benchmark measures things a little differently, which I like. It has Browser benchmark, obviously for the borwser(For this I measured the stock Samsung browser and Chrome). It has Multicore which is exactly as it suggests, an advanced multicore benchmark. Lastly, it also has Metal, which measures maximum power of the device.
Note 10.1
Browser:
Samsung Browser: 3524
Chrome: 3214
The Note 10.1 seemed to really blaze along here, both results coming in with hot numbers ranking above HTC's M8.
Multicore The Device ranked a very nice 1570, it show up short of the G3 at 1711 and ahead of the nexus 5 at 1525.
Metal Once again, no disappointment. The device ranked in at 1374 beating out the Nexus 5 (1271) and coming in below the LG G3 (1497).
Galaxy S5
Browser:
Samsung Browser: 3278
Chrome: 2908
Bumping along a little slower than the Note 10.1, still scoring in with some nice results. This however was my daily driver for quite some time so cache and cookies may be hindering some performance here.
Multicore This device scoring a nice 1701, which is just ahead of Vellamo's score for the GS5 at 1647. Chugging along ahead of the Note 10.1 as with the 3D Mark, but not crushing it quite as bad. The Device ranks in just below the G3 as well, and has some significant distance ahead of the Nexus 5.
Metal Scoring an impressive 1518 this device is once again besting Vellamo's score for the GS5 at 1464. It tops everything on their comparison list except for the OnePlus One which ranks at 1653.
Note 4
Browser:
Samsung Browser: 3546
Chrome: 3377
Crushing the competition here, the Note 4 is the clear winner.
Multicore Dropping it like its hot at 1870, this bad boy is killing everything on their list.
Metal Going in for the finishing blow (Que mortal combat announcers "Finish Him") the Note 4 is sitting at staggering 1823. Surpassing the Galaxy S5 by over 300 points in this segment, and the top chart comparison the OnePlus One by 170 points.
With that out of the way, I do want to say benchmarks are not the end all be all. The devices are all great and id recommend all of them to anyone, but I figured this was interesting to see on a numbers game just how they matched up. I recommend reading up into the two benchmarks I used if your interested in testing things out for yourselves. I find them both interesting and they both seem to keep interest in accurate results. Hope you guys enjoyed this! Let me know what you think and feel free to share input you've found along the way!
.
Interesting, Chrome is slower on each device. I wish I actually liked the stock browser...
On a side note: is the Quadrant benchmark still a thing? Looks like it hasn't been updated since 2002
I'm torn between getting a Note 4 or the Tablet (Note 10.1). The screen seems to be so much better on the 4 with its almost double ppi. I just think the Tablet would be more useful for the S Pen. Man can't decide lol.

I had a choice of brand spankin new Note 5 or a mildy used Note 4 from swappa, Note 4 hands down, Its not as pretty as Note 5 but I always slap a case on my phone anyways. The 64 bit processor in Note 5 is awesome gd investment for future but the Note 4 being 32 bit will be supported till 2020 at least. Removable battery is always required for me, sd slot, ir blaster....I have this thing tweaked every which way...thanks to awesome devs on xda.

Lollipop brightens the screen and makes it clearer as well. Got both the T-Mobile Note 4 and Note 10.1 2014 and Lollipop looks amazing on my tablet, downloaded a beach picture from a website in 2560x1600, and it looks clear. Definitely use the tablet with the spen more than the spen in my phone

Thanks for the input. Ya pretty sure now that I'm going to use my money for a tablet not a phone. I just wish Samsung had or will have something to replace my Note 8.
what's a good benchmarking test aside from quadrant?
Hi, I'm new in this forum. I need help. I bought a Galaxy Note Pro 12.2 (SM-P900). I know it has two quadcores (one of 1.9 GHz and another of 1.3 GHz) but I think it only use one of them, because it lags a lot when I run games and another apps like chrome. Also when I run benchmarks, they only recognize the 1.9 GHz one. I tested Asphalt 8 and it runs at 20 fps or less. Also it lags when I pass pages in S Note. There's a way to speed up and take advantage of both CPUs? Thanks!
S Note always seems to lag (I don't use it, but others report it.) The app isn't optimized for 12.2". Try Lecture Notes.
Benchmarks see only one CPU because that's their limitation. They couldn't detect the second one even of it was running laps around the first.
Cores don't stack. So even if you have 4 1.9Ghz cores, it doesn't become 7.6Ghz. This is why the amount of Ghz matters so much for gaming and heavy apps. The Exynos is designed for multitasking, not heavy processing(games). That's what Snapdragon is for.
Next is the Mali GPU. It's weaker than the Adreno and doesn't handle 2K very well. Particularly in heavy games. Oh it does Candy Crush just fine , but it's like Intel HD vs Nvidia in terms of the more serious work.
If gaming was a priority, you should've gone for the P905 with the Snapdragon 800 & Adreno GPU.
You can try to get rid of most of the bloatware, that should at least speed it up a bit. Also replace the launcher with Nova or Apex, they use less system resources. (60MB RAM vs 800MB.) You can also try a factory reset, see if that helps.
Maybe someone else with a p900 can tell us if they, too, have the same framerate issue. (I've got the P905.)
The Note 3 N9005 and N900 editions have the same hardware as the P905 and P900 respectively. The N900 with the same Exynos/Mali has the same issues with lag in Gaming as the P900 does.
S Note can't be helped, that's Samsung's fault, bad coding.

Root it and pick one of the stock based roms because they are the only ones with kernel development. I'm on CM 11 because I love aosp but I'm living with the built in kernel. That's the best you're going to get as far as I can see, but there are a lot of really smart folks around here.
Thanks for replying. Your answers helped me
Asphalt 8 has graphics settings where you can change the level of detail. Change the settings to low (which still looks good) and play is completely smooth.
Regarding optimizing general performance, I'd stick with Samsung stock roms as the gpu driver is better than cm based roms. Change the kernel and overclock the cpu and gpu to 2GHz and 667MHz respectively. Use the synapse app to undervolt the cpu and gpu at the highest frequency steps, necessary to avoid thermal limits which drops the clock speeds. With these settings I get 41000 on Antutu and 996/3000+ on Geekbench 3. Very smooth performance for my tablet.
hi guys new to the forum hope you can help..im about to buy the wifi version but because of the lag im tempted with the lte now..my question is a do a lot of art work .sketching etc and recently artrage was released for android..would you say the snapdragon would be better than the exynos version for brush lag etc .I cant seem to get a good answer to this question ..the note 12.2 is a great size and much lighter than a laptop and reat battery life..
sorry wrong forum
Hi all,
I just bought a note 4 sd 805 (the UK version). I expected this to be a very powerful phone, but instead I am kind of disappointed .
After playing Asphalt 8 for just 15min, the game starts to lag considerably and suffer from some serious frame rate drop.
The phone itself heats up a bit, but not a lot.
I also noticed that, if I run antutu for say 5 times in a row (with no pause), the score will drop from about 48000 to about 38000.
I still keep my note 3, which is rock solid and did not have the above behaviour (i.e. no heat at all, I can play asphalt 8 for hours with perfect quality and consistent antutu scores of about 43000).
Also my pvs is 13, which seems to be quite a good one (as per this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/note-4/general/info-check-share-cpu-binning-t2950180)
Do you guys think I have a faulty note 4? Should I return it?
Thanks
I dont think that you has a faulty note. Same here with s5 and sd 801 runing gta vc. In about 20 mins of gaming fps drops horrible

Thanks,
but if the latest generation of phones cannot handle tasks (i.e. games) which the previous generation (note 3 in my case) handled with easy,
doesn't that mean the the phone is not fit for purpose?
In my case I paid £580 and expected to see some improvements. The only true improvement (compare with note 3) is the camera.
The game performance is awful.
The display seems to be brighter (on auto and against direct sun light), but if I actually want to use it like that, it starts heating up and throttle after 15min.
In normal tasks (browsing and light apps) note 3 and note 4 perform on par, with sometimes note 3 being faster.
I also ran the stress test app, and it seems that the note 4 does not stay on 2.7 at all. it starts with 2.4 then quickly goes to 2.2 and 1.9 and after a few minutes it goes down to 1.1 and it stays there. My note 3 on the other hand starts with 2.27 and stays there for few minutes then goes down to 1.9 and 1.7 and then it stays between 1.5 and 1.7.
So, under heavy load snapdragon 805 perform worst than 800. Please note that the SD in my unit has the perfect binning of pvs13. The SD 800 in my note 3 is pvs 2 and it is still way more stable.
I just want to know if you guys have similar experience with the phone?

You right bro.
You can manage your thermals with custom kernel. Its a know problem, even in the lg g3 forum theres a mod to raise the values of throttle.

Disable DVFS (just for the laggy games if your phone doesn't freeze and restart) and asphalt will be perfect. You can also run games in 1080 which helps and be grateful as there are kernels supported by your phone's version that you can mess with the thermal throttle and gpu clocks. Just don't let it get too hot
I agree with you, there should be no tweaks needed to run any game, but that's unfortunately not the case, but with some work you can get it to perfect performance! Good luck!
How's the gameplay on the Exynos variant? I never had gaming issues on the Note 2
@arjun90
exynos is way better at gaming
its not laggy in asphalt 8 even after 15 minutes
On sd805 asphalt 8 is just unplayable.. it does not work well from the first minute (I mean as good as my sd800 note 3)
and after about 15min it becomes even worst.
and that is with sd805 binned 13.. My first note 4 (which I returned) was getting hot just from web browsing. I am sure the cpu was with low quality bin.
Samsung should get rid of this low quality cpus.. We pay some serious money and at the end it is just a lottery...
I am also seriously disappointed with the awful deteriorating game performance. For a phone of this price and calibre I was expecting so much more. I hope it is software related and can be fixed, but I don't want to melt my phone!
I have Canadian SM-N910W8 with SD805 and 420 Adreno just tried asphalt 8 its running fast at high setting even with power saving on. Also scored Atutu 47923.
Anyone tried Wolf among us? Game won't start after title screen?

well I don't know what to say mate I have the same cpu and gpu, Antutu for me is even above 48000 regularly about 48700
still asphalt 8 is just pretty much unplayable.. Some other games however are ok. Hope it is a software issue and sammy/app developer(gameloft) fix it.
I am non rooted and fully stock..
Have you try to greenify everything then run the game? I think it probably software.
I'm rooted but using my original stock image as base with extras - fixed everything working. Took me a while but good trends here before had lots of issues.
Yes i agree with that games like asphalt should play smooth without installing custom rom.. It is really awful.. But now after flashing kernel and flashed rom it runs smoooottthh!..
it is the first android phone I am reluctant to root (at least for now). Lollipop is coming very soon and I prefer to see what it will bring to my note.
If if works for you guys (after rooting and possibly applying custom kernel and some modifications) it is sammy fault and not the game developer. It is really frustrating. Hope sammy fix this mess soon.
Yet again blaming the chip on what is clearly a not optimized game for the 805. Software is the problem. Ya know if the game isn't optimized for that chip it will run like ****, if they update for this phone and it still runs ****ty than they did a bad job.
Hi ive running the 1st version of asphalt 8 on my phone for about 20 min without any lags.Might be the games are not optimised yet
Edit:Just Noticed that the graphic settings to medium & high are not available which is very strange

I have noticed that any game with graphic options become unplayable after setting anything higher them low. ie. GTA SA.

bizarre.. for me the medium & high settings are available.. it just the game itself kind of unplayable.
the fact that some users report that the issue is fixable with root and custom kernel gives some hope.
I traded my note 5 for the S7 edge. I did a side by side comparison after the fact, just opening up some apps and the note 5 was significantly faster. Now i know the note5 is a octa while the s7 is a quad. But I remember Samsung boasting about how its the fastest on the market. I then did a side by side with my buddies s6 and they were the same speed. Has anyone else experienced this? Im wondering if i got a bum phone as im currently in another thread talking about the phones cpu temp. thanks
The quadcore snapdragon should be about 20% to 30% faster than their latest exynos octacore. Also, ram optimization will be diff on both phones. In real world test, the edge 7 runs faster and has better battery life. Once the apps were loaded into the ram on the s7 it blew the note 5 away. I also tested both devices. Your device is normal, the real world performance is slightly better. Not night and day
Samsung optimises there own socs better than the SD variants, see speed tests on YouTube on s7 VS apple 6s..every time the exynos won over the 6s but the SD looses every time (in opening apps etc)
That's the big drawback with having other than home grew socs in your phone, they are not as optimised as the original one.

Very much depends. Single core? Yes. Multi core? No, the other way around. The general consensus is that, as a CPU, the Exynos is the better hardware. But the GPU on the Qualcomm SOC is faster and better.

Well yeah in multi core test you wont be winning any benchmarks but more cores dont always mean its faster and or better. Look at what apple does with single and dual core processors. Most of all the bench mark test on both the US version and intl version are pretty neck and neck both versions winning and losing some test to each other. On paper, the 820 should offer a performance boost.

There are plenty of benchmarks on this. Exynos 8890 wins on multi-core tests and also real-world tests. It looses by a small margin on single-core. RAM speed is really no-contest, Exynos drives the RAM 50% faster.
Hey guys. I have really put this phone through the paces. Something isnt reallly making sense for me. I tested a lot of phones in this category and price range. On paper, it seems to be more powerful than the rest but im not noticing this. I had my deviced rooted etc but I have reverted back to stock reruud and tried to use the phone normally for a week or so with just the internal memory being used. I wanted to get the most realistic use case benchmarks possible.. Here are my results.. I just ran the test. Then I ran it again. Then I enable CPU high performance mode through dev options and ran it one more time. ANNNNNDDD one more time with CPU HP Mode Enabled with Airplane mode on. FYI.. this did nothign. Here are my ANTUTU RESULTS (P.S. I am using v6.1.4 on android 5.1)
