Accessing SMB Server / USB Drive on Wireless Router - Nexus Player Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My D-Link DIR-880L wireless router has a couple of USB ports for connecting hardware. I tried this feature for the first time last night with a 64GB USB 3.0 drive. The Kodi app on my Nexus Player and Nexus 5 is able to access the USB drive through the SMB server on my router after I manually add its 192.168.0.1 IP address. ES File Explorer and some other apps that I've tried are not able to access it, however, as they only detect shared folders of PCs on the LAN. D-Link's SharePort Mobile app also works but the design and features on it are very basic. Does anyone else here have a similar setup and if so, which apps have you found that can access files through SMB on a USB drive connected directly to your router?

Es file explorer should work great

You would think so but as seen in the third picture I attached to my original post, ES File Explorer is not able to see or access the SMB server / USB drive on my router. "Error, cannot find the server." On the other hand, Kodi really is some brilliant software.

I was trying to do the same couldn't figure it out saw someone online change sever to like ip/u_disk/usb_1/ i haven't tried it but if you figure it out can you let me know?

I have a Linksys WRT1200AC that also has USB. I got mine to work by putting // in front of the IP address. Try putting in: //192.168.0.1 & see how that works.

None of the suggestions above worked for me. I e-mailed the ES File Explorer developers about this a couple of weeks ago and they said that they are trying to solve this problem. The new ES File Explorer v4.0.2.2 update did not address this matter, unfortunately.

File manager pro it also have lan, ftp and a few other network ways to connect. I like it. when you put the ip in and run "test connection" it at least thinks for a minute before it says it cant so im sure im using a wrong setting and it should work if i knew what i was doing.

I am too having the same problems with both the router and my MBP. I'm unable to get access to either one.

I have a setup like this only with a netgear router. Have es scan instead of you entering the address. I have always had it scan and never had an issue.

Help setting up wifi router

i have just bought a netgear wifi router and i can not get it to work. does anyone know of a guide to set it up?
RE
Hi!
Netgear haa a very good forum for its products. You can try there for better luck
i found it no help!
getting there now. well i can acess my computer via resco file explorer.
just now need to set the internet up
2 questions,
Do you need to set up the router ? Or do you need to set up your ppc ?
prob both,
i can browse my desktop pc wirelessly using resco file explorer but i can not use the internet.
so it still could be both, i still can not connect to activesync, probably if i can do this i would be able to connect to the net as i can when the blue angle is docked

You might want to down load vxUtil from http://www.cam.com/vxutil_pers.html with this util you can most likely find out what is wrong. You should not need activesync to connect to the Internet, **IF** your router connects to the Internet.
To activesync with the PC you will need to enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP on the PC. Then you'll need to be able to PING your PC by name. And both the PC and the PPC need to be using the same DHCP server, and in the same network.
As you can reach your desktop, have you set both settings to "Work" or some form of this on your PPC, and checked just "This network connects to the Internet" under proxxy settings for the work connection? Each version of the PPC OS seems to change the names here just a bit.

File sharing over ad-hoc wifi

I just bought a usb wi-fi dongle so that i can connect to my wizard in office over wi-fi. Can anyone give any pointers how can i do file sharing in ad-hoc mode in such a way that i can access files on my office PC through my wizard without having a separate access point.
I tried connecting through ad-hoc mode and my wizard connects to the PC but doesn't show any shared folders and cannot find my PC (not even through IP) when using resco file explorer...

To browse network folder on your HTC you should install some additional software. I've tried PocketLAN to share files between notebook and HTC via Wi-Fi. It've been working flawlessly. But you have to set IP and network mask on your HTC as it's in the office network.
Hmmm, i just installed pocketlan...I saw that my PPC gets an IP of 169.254.11.69 (subnet mask 255.255.0.0) and mycomp gets an ip of 169.254.87.204. Now am able to ping my comp using pocketlan on my PPC but am not able to map it. Whenever i try to do it, it says network address/name cannot be found.
that's strange What OS do you use?
You don't need any 3rd party software...
The Wizard will do this with it's built in file explorer.
Windows XP is the OS...
Did it finally after umpteen number of tries...Turns out ICS is necessary even for simple file sharing even though i do not want to surf net thru my PC's connection. And I also had to unplug my lan cable as the IP windows tries to assign once ICS is on is 192.168.0.x and this range is already used by my lan thus causing a conflict...Anyways, its better than nothing..I just wanted a faster medium to transfer files than BT which is painfully slow..
Any idea when are they going to provide an upgrade to BT 2.0 for wizard?

Unable to map network drive via VPN!

Hi there,
I have successfully connected to my VPN server. However, when I want to map to a network drive via VPN, it somehow cannot find that machine on the network... I have tried using both Resco File Explorer 2007 and File Explorer... Anyone have any ideas why it's not able to see the computer when connected through VPN? I'm using PPTP.....

If your network does IPSec and/or IPv6, you might not just be able to accomplist... I myself can even access my local network @ work.....
So you are suggesting to use a different VPN protocol? Like IPSec? Cause as of now, the VPN function on the phone is completely useless if I can't get it to work... I can map to a network drive when I'm connected locally... it's just trying to map over VPN connection that is the problem... anymore suggestions?

reversed USB connected mode?

I'm running CM7.1 off the sdcard. When I connect my nook to my compute via the usb cable (and after I enable usb connection on NC), I can access the content of my sdcard from my computer.
Question: Is it possible to set things up so that I access from the NC the content of my computer? For now I'd be happy to have read access. I do prefer a solution that does not require wifi connection between the PC and the NC since I need to maintain wifi connection on the computer.
THANKS!
Run an ftp server on your computer and then use es file explorer on your nook. Have both connected to the same wifi network.

First, thanks for your help!

Questions:
(1) By "run an ftp server on your computer" and "both connected to the same wifi network": Do you mean having the NC ssh into my laptop through wifi? If so, would it interfere with my laptop's wifi connection (to the wifi router)?
(2) By "es file explorer on your nook": Do you mean use the LAN function to add a new server (namely my laptop's ssh server)?
THANKS!
[EDIT] (3) I just notice that es file explorer seems to ask for a samba server and not a ssh server -- is that why you mention "ftp server" in your post?
Now I need to figure how to setup samba in linux... via ssh?!
Samba also works great go for that and you can go both ways just like you are asking.
If you use the ES FIle Explorer app then you don't need to do anything else special. It can see all the folders that you have shared on any computer on your network.
Just add any server on your network in the ES setup and you will need to put in the login authentication details if the folders are protected. ES will allow you to read and write if permitted.
I re-read your original post and saw the bit about not using wifi. Is your PC off-network? It doesn't need a wifi connection itself provided it is connected to the same network providing the wifi connection. If you really want to browse the PC folders from the Nook over the USB connection then that is going to be trickier.

Yes, if you are talking about a wired connection only not even sure why you'd want to do this. If you are attached to a PC it is going to be much easier to look at the PC files with the PC than try and do it through the tablet. ?

I plan to use this in situation where I might not have wifi, which is why I thought I needed a wired connection. But I'm intriuged by your comment
"It doesn't need a wifi connection itself provided it is connected to the same network providing the wifi connection."
Are you saying I can use the Nook to talk to my laptop's wifi directly <i>without</i> going through a router? That would be GREAT! -- how would I do that? I use linux, in case that matters.
THANKS!

Ad-hoc networking allows two wifi devices to talk directly without a router. Nook supports that and I'm sure your laptop will, although I don't have direct experience of linux ad-hoc.

case-sensitive is on CM7.1 so this does not really matter to him, but I just saw on the cyanogenmod site that ad-hoc support just got merged into CM9 today. Should be in tomorrow's nightly.

Problem with "Wireless Memory"!!!

I do not know why but when I try to connect the phone to the PC using the "Wireless Memory" and shows me that the server is not found, otherwise everything else goes perfectly

The Wireless Memory works without issues, you should check if there any kind of filtering in the middle
For Wireless Storage; which is what I assume you meant, two of the most common issues:
1) use Windows Explorer, not Internet Explorer. To clarify: NOT your internet browser.
2) turn on Wireless Storage first, then go to PC and type in the IP and credentials that you are given by the phone into Windows Explorer. If you don't get an IP address and login credentials, don't bother going to the PC, no amount of URL paths and such will get you connected.
Good luck and let us know if you continue to have issues.
Edit: I just re-read the post and you say everything else works perfectly. So you get the error message but it works...? Are you using IP address or device name?
The variant with Windows Explorer does not work when i using the IP address and also device name. The problem is no resolve...
I popped another problem. I can not find how to transfer files via wi fi diretst. On my previous phone I had an option in the file explorer, and now does not know how to do the operation. Share via wifi direct not present an option
