Suggestions for a new Note 4 owner? - Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just picked up the Note 4 a few days back, and there are some definite growing pains. I had the Note 2 prior to this, and there are some clear differences. I'm also shocked at how quickly the battery drains (lasts at best 8 hours with moderate use), and it seems to get really hot.
Any suggestions you can point me towards?

Root, install custom recovery etc and install a lighter ROM.
Might help.
I easily get 20+ hours with moderate use (WiFi, some Mobile Data, WhatsApp, Youtube, 1-2 emails).
BTW- I'm using SimplRom- might not be right for you but personally I've yet to complain about it.

Thanks for the suggestions. Not one to root my phone. Have never been comfortable doing so myself, and can't afford to be without a phone.

Fair enough, um then just perhaps keep screen brightness low; make sure you don't have a million and one apps syncing data in the background, and update to the latest official version of Lollipop for your phone through your OTA updates.

Quick question......I used to have 6 pages on my device, and could scroll in any direction. Seems I'm no longer able to scroll seamlessly. Did they change something???

Install Nova Launcher!

Remove all the possible bloatware, change launcher (nova launcher for example), use greenify..things will be better. The best should be rooting your phone, of course

You still can.
Just disable Briefing. Pinch your Homescreen, go to Homescreen Settings and turn it Off. Put as many homescreens as you would like.
For battery, I suggest you Disable the apps you don't use, get Greenify, and maybe try Power Saving.
Go to Settings -Power Saving, turn it on then -go to Restrict Performance -then just tick CPU, untick the others.
Which did you get? The N910C or N910F?

Doesn't work. This was one of the first things I disabled. When I try to scroll to the left left from the home screen it does nothing. Like I'm hitting a wall.

The N910V

I suggest you return it and buy an iphone 6+. You just made a very big mistake dude.

Factory reset recommended, or install a new stock Rom via Odin.
To avoid fast depletion of your battery, Deep Sleep Battery Saver is recommended.

CM9 ICS battery life saving's tips with Advanced CMSettings.apk

Hello to everyone.
I know that there are some similar threads in this forum, but no one is strictly related to the CM9 alpha IML74K.
I know as well that this could be part of the CM9 user discussion thread, but I'd like to share the best settings to get a good battery life with our S2 in a clean thread.
So, please:
no trolls, no dumb questions.
Just share your own experience (with a battery screenshot should be better).
Thanks a lot.
Here we go:
Developer options:
Debug usb off
Allow mock locations off
Force GPU rendering off
Windows animation scale off
Transition animation scale off
Don't keep activities on
Background process limit on
Kill app back button on
Display:
Automatic brightness off (I'm using Brightness Level widget)
Black wallpaper (search for solid black.png from wikipedia)
Sleep after 1 minute of inactivity.
Pulse notification light off.
Trebuchet options:
Scroll wallpaper off
Sync settings:
Google account
Sync calendar on
Sync Contacts on
Sync Gmail on
Whattsapp account:
Sync Contacts on
Sound Settings:
Touch sounds off
Screen lock sounds off
Vibrate on touch off
Location services:
Google's location service on
Location & Google search on
(Gps satellites on only when using Sygic or Maps)
Date and time:
Automatic date & time off
Automatic time zone off
CyanogenMod Settings app v1.0:
Interface Settings/Expanded view widget
Toggle 2G/3G checked
Toggle Mobile data checked
For a quick switch to 2G mode and save more battery.
Testing "twek levels and filtering" in automatic backlight settings.
With Titanium Backup:
Frozen all live wallpapers, tts services and uninstalled Gtalk and mail.
P.S. Be careful, you need debug usb on when using Titanium Backup
Data on all the day. I turn it off when I go to bed.
Wireless on when I'm home and need to use dropbox or download a big file from my Gmail account.
I'm using CM9 01062012 (I know, there's a new one, but I've reached a very stable daily rom, no FC, no random reboots, fast and smooth).
Modem XXKL1
Now my battery lasts two days.
Well, when my girlfriend tells me stories about her life, it lasts one day and a half.
Important:
I've uninstalled Facebook app which was causing a battery drain. I'm using the mobile web page instead and I've to tell that it is faster.
Other apps installed:
Twitter, Maps, Sygic, Whattsapp, Beatiful widgets (with manual weather update), Xda premium, ...
2012-01-14 Added CyanogenMod Settings Apk v1.0 (from SGS forums)
How to install:
Download it to your internal SD card
Enter into Recovery mode;
Wipe cache;
Advanced settings, wipe dalvik cache;
Flash zip from Sdcard,
Choose CMSettings.zip and flash it.
Reboot system
2011-01-18 Update:
I've been trying few modems and I've found the best one for me: (Vodafone Spain, data on almost all the time, good signal quality, great battery life)
NEKD5 Modem Zip package.
Flash from recovery. Follow cmsettings instructions.
Nice post. Going to try some your suggestions.
I'm sure loads of other xdaers are going find this useful too.
So many posts in the cm9 discussion thread about battery life and how to achieve optimum performance good to have a thread about it.
Big props

Apparently its a bug. It makes the OS look like its working over time but actually it won't be. Its somewhere in the cm discussion thread if you want to see the posts about it. As far as aware its not fixed yet with any of the builds.

The same here. But I've noticed that using Fastreboot app, it seems to kill/restart stuck apps/processes.
Anyway, rebooting the system before the night helps a lot.
Unless you're not a modern vampire...
Agree with others - excellent thread. There seem to be so many battery challenges with CM9 that a separate thread will lessen clutter in the discussion thread.
I've tried a number of your settings and have also flashed the KL1 modem. I had high hopes for KP4 at first, but it seems to have slipped back into old habits!

The app and the process are still running after you close them.
I have tried to logout, but it's still there. I think the process keeps going for notifications and photo uploading.
I've tried to kill it, but it comes back after few seconds.
Finally I gave up and used the mobile web page.

But that isn't related to CM9, i had the same issues on gingerbread.
Yes, sir.
I knew it.
But it seems to me that Facebook app is eating more battery on ICS.
Checked my battery info and found out FB app percentage was 15% in 6 hours and I've used it just to read few messages. Then I've logged out.
I could be wrong, but I think it needs an update to control battery drain.
Indeed. I'll bet there are a host of apps that will need subtle tweaks and optimisations for ICS. Another reason not to expect too much from CM9 in terms of performance as yet...although access to kernal sources is obviously the big one!
CM settings
Trying right now CyanogenMod Settings app.
Flashable zip from recovery. The apk goes to /system.
It comes from GTi9000 forum and as I can see, it works perfectly on my S2.
It doesn't have so many options, but few are very important.
Let's have a look...
I'd be very interested on your feedback on this app.
On a different subject, I seem to have my battery back behaving reasonably well again with KP1 modem. In my tons of testing it seems like Nova Launcher - as much as I like it - is a significant contributor to my battery drain issues.
This could be because I have installed a bunch more stuff on Nova than I have with Trebuchet, so my next tactic is to gradually reintroduce some of my favourite widgets to Trebuchet to see if one of them suddenly starts killing my battery.
On the down side it may mean that I can't use one of my widgets for a while but on the plus side it may eliminate Nova as a battery drain meaning that I can go back to using it.
Have you tried FBM for facebook?
Basically the same look as the facebook app. But supposedly a lot cleaner!

As I said before, don't expect a very useful app. It's the 1.0 version, and hopefully it will be a great app. But for now I've tried only some settings in the automatic backlight and modified the notification power widget.
At the moment, that's all we have. Anyway, give it a try, if you'd like.
Screenshots added in the first post.
Anyone able to disable button's backlight? Its still on even though i set it to "0" in the custom settings..
Another thing,is it possible to the haptic feedback tweaks like in cm7 settings?

Massively improved battery life on stock 4.1.2

I've had fantastic results since I updated to 4.1.2.
I've done a fair bit of tweaking to get the results, but it's worth the effort.
Here's my advice.
Factory reset first. (Vital)
Turn off Google Now
Turn off Google location updating and history in Google maps
Disable all Samsung Apps you don't use. (This will be a massive list of useless apps and services)
Use a mostly black wallpaper
That's it.
Below in the screenshots are the results of this tweaking.
Please keep in mind, I've been reading books on my phone with moon+ reader. I use a white text on black background and mainly at night so low brightness. Hence the crazy long screen on time.
However I still sent numerous txts, browsed, used gmail, streamed music etc etc...and had two days of standby.
Screen on auto brightness, standard battery.
Insane. This is by far the best battery life I've ever had from an Android device...and I've had many going back to the G1.
I'd thoroughly recommended trying the tips.
Have a search around and you'll find a full page with all the Samsung apps you can disable...there are a hell of a lot of them.
Give it a go.

My experience is similar, as I've done the same. I'd say that stock 4.1.2 (LL5) is about as close to perfect as it can be.
Which 4.1.2 rom are you using? I can only get a maximum of 6 hours screen time on my stock ELKC rom
and this is also on stock kernel?
LL5 with stock kernel and a full wipe. Lots of Samsung bloat frozen and removed.
More details please:
-Rom???
-2G or 3G???
-Wifi all time???
-Power saver mode on???

I use stock ROM odexed. I have sync off most of the time and I sync manually about once an hour or maybe once every two hours, depending on my schedule. Never use power saver, and I keep data toggled off when I don't need it, and I use Wifi in my office (and data only when out) so I think that helps. I don't run any widgets other than the stock calendar widget, and gnotes (and Google search, but I have Now turned off), no live wallpapers, Facebook or any of that crap. Just a dark (stars) wallpaper. I can get huge amount of time out of my battery that way, even with a good amount of screen time. I have around 80 apps installed, but keep the system running lean. I don't use any task managers or memory killers, and I rarely reboot. Maybe once every 3-4 days.

On 4.1.1, with Perseus kernel, auto sync and mobile data on all the time, I get even better battery life. Which is why I'm reluctant to update and start over, as the phone more operates perfectly for me.
There is a list of safe to remove apps in the Themes & Apps sections, it's a sticky thread even.

Just wanted to add that on ELL4 I'm suddenly getting fantastic battery life - I was having loads of random reboot problems (many times an hour at one point, unusable), then it all went away for some reason after lots of fiddling, and since then I'm on 27 hours without a charge, and still 35% left - that's with everything turned on still, no change in my usage; wifi all the time, Google Now, loads of accounts syncing including Latitude location, email syncing every 15 mins, some music and browsing usage, etc
Before, I'd get around 16 hours of this normal usage before the battery was getting ready for a charge. Weird, but I'm not complaining!
Well with ELL4 everythink stock rooted with enyxos abuse, and frozen samsung apps, i can barely get 6 hours screen on ..
I text friends, and use whatsapp over Data network(2g) (no wifi) and SYNC is off
Will i get 9h screen on with ELL5 ?
Edit : And yes i wiped cache / data before flash ELL4 via Odin
I still hold the record XD

[Q] Facebook/Linked in... APK or WEB?

Hi all,
So here is my question...
I've been having horrible battery drain and have not yet put my finger on what is causing it.
I'm thinking it could be facebook/linkedin/other apps on my phone.
Is there any reason to install the APK version when a mobile web version exists?
I see the web version being a good choice as it won't be an app installed but rather just visiting a web page.
Any thoughts?
get better battery stats and that should let you see whats causing the drain....or look in settings>battery and see whats running there as well. the apk is there for convieniance and thats about it. the constant updates and radios being on will kill your battery cause the phone is consistently looking for new information. its really all user preference but to me bookmarking the site is just as simple as having the app. you just may not get the update that your friend you dont talk to is eating a taco and taco bell as fast.

It appears greenofy does a lot of what autostarts does. I use autostarts for all apps and disable most everything (for instance facebook with an app is installed/uninstalled etc).
Having said that, after wiping my phone yesterday and doing a fresh install of TriForce 3.1 with Agat 5.1 I've noticied a significant INCREASE in up time.
I only installed a few normal google apps. Linkedin/Facebook I'm using the web version. I got 21 hours out of my S4 with 2 hours of screen on.
When I have my phone configured "normal" i've got close to 90 apps installed.
I'm going to run a "bone stock" from for a few more days to see how the battery life is (i know you have to give the kernal a few days to burn in).
I just wish my phone could last a lot longer before dying.
try ktoonz kernel.......they have alot of preset kernel settings to help you get the most out of your battery and still maintain performance in the ktoonz store. i normally run 1 day+ with around 3 hrs 45mins screen time......and my screen time is usually gaming (psp emulation)and tweaking differant settings or downloading movies music etc.... so its pretty heavy usage...

How to make the LG G3 smooth as butter

I don't know if there is already a thread going on about this but i jus wanted to share it with a little introduction
2 days ago i was getting a secondhanded LG G3 (16GB, 2GB ram) as replacement for my Oneplus One.
Screen is just gorgeous and so is the build quality (hmm the feeling of this phone)
HOWEVER.... There was a downside... The LG G3 was nowhere as smooth as a regular S5, HTC One, G2 etc.. Pressing the home button from an app takes like half a second, there was some lag when switching apps, keyboard was laggy as i am a fast typer...
So i searched a solution on the internet and it actually worked!
My LG is smooth like butter... Battery was also a tad better!
NOTICE: this is just a summary from all the things i did to my mobile to become lag free! My thanks goes to the people who found this solution so the credits goes to them and not me!
1: Enter the following based on your device model:
3845#*855# (for International model)
3845#*851# (for T-Mobile)
3845#*850# (for AT&T)
5689#*990# - (for Sprint)
2. Scroll down to High Temperature Property OFF,and select
3. Turn it ON... (Don't press back or home, just switch the phone off)
4. Turn G3 fully off...
5. Wait at least 10sec...
6. Turn it back on and wait about 30sec. when Screen Lock shows...
1. Again enter hidden menu according to your device model number
2. Select Thermal Daemon Mitigation OFF (again don't go back, just turn the phone off)
3. Turn it ON
4. Turn OFF your G3.
5. Wait for around 30sec
6. Turn it on and after lock screen appears unlock it
7. Wait for at least 60sec more for G3 to finish sync and stuff
8. BOOM much more fluid and much faster G3
(thanks to: stefan063)
Want more speed?
1. Go to settings > About the phone > Software information > Tap a few times on Build-number untill it shows "you are a developer!"
2. go back and go in to developer options
3. Tap on Select Runtime
4. Default is Dalvik but choose ART instead
5. Phone auto reboots (takes a long time so don't worry)
6. Wait till finished and BAM, speedy LG
Want lightning speed by sound speedyness?
1. Just install a different launcher (I use Nova)

So, why this thread?
ART causes wakelocks and Bluetooth audio stuttering. Thermal mitigation keeps clocks high and hurts battery life. Launcher replacement if it is stable makes sense, LG 's skin hurts more than anything.
How about you add the downside to these options to the OP

Dalvik lags alot. For alot of ppl. And not ART. Think youre the first one who says the opposit.
Lets see if it works

You can download in the playstore. You can think of it as the icing, and the cake would be the ROM. Replacing the launcher only replaces the top layer, what you see and how the interface looks while you are on the home screen. It does not void your warranty.

Small word of warning: I switched to ART as soon as I setup my G3. Clash of Clans worked great for a few days, but then wouldn't start at all. I tried everything I could think of, from reboots, to wiping data, to uninstalling and reinstalling. No dice. It only started working again when I switched back to Dalvik.
Hopefully you won't see that issue, but it certainly made me realize that ART as it is in the wild, isn't quite ready for prime time.

ART shouldn't really affect battery life that much, only around an extra 5% in its current beta form. The theory is that with dalvik, everytime you start an app it has to convert that app into bytecode to launch it. With ART it pre compiles the bytecode on first run. The converting into bytecode uses extra CPU cycles thus extra battery so changing from dalvik to ART should make a difference. As it is only in beta form on 4.4.2 there's really not much difference.

I concur
Battery life seems to be sucking!
Gonna reformat my sdcard & then put my media on it & see if that helps before having to do a factory reset.. used to get 2-2.5 days our of a charge now this battery prediction add-on is saying 10 hours left on a battery I just put in an hour ago. Completely stock & not rooted, so backups are a pain & Helium apparently isn't 100% so that option seems pointless. Suggestions?

Camera is better. OS is smooth and snappy. Only issue I've had was "Samsung keyboard" force closing. Happened 3 times today. Twice with Facebook messenger and once with in the stock text app.

Long press on Power button no longer brings up volume options (sound, vibrate, silent). [emoji107] [emoji26]

Not sure yet -
I haven't noticed any issues with Maps. I kinda like the new swipe on the lock screen to swipe to the phone dialer. I don't like taking away the audio controls on the power button screen. Love the fast camera focus (didn't know about that till I read this thread).
For whatever reason I can't seem to find the trusted devices thing for my FitBit...
EDIT:
Scratch that. Gotta enable SmartLock in the security settings.
Do you guys recommend a complete reset?
My most wanted feature was the combined security lock screen (Finger lock, PIN, etc) and I can't seem to find a way to enable it here.
I don't like the new lock screen notifications now. I don't need to see my BT devices and Ultimate Rotation Control on my lock screen. I'm fine with the missed calls, texts and emails but not with the others taking up unnecessary screen space.
Anyone know how to get them to show back up in the notification bar up top?
I like the camera, UI changes, look, etc. Overall system seems quicker. I have not had any issues so far but it has been less than 1 day of usage. I did notice the battery discharged quickly at first, however it seems that the battery drain is leveling off after a while.
I always used the stock messenger app. I really don't like all the orange. I'm trying alternatives now. So far textra is nice with black background
Calls don't work with android auto.
You guys tried benchmarks? Look antutu, is extremely low!! :/
