As im new with LG devices (always had Sony (Ericsson) ones) I wanted to be 100% sure before modding.
Recovery is connected with kernel? I mean - when I flash kernel it has built in recovery (like Sony/SE devices, where after falshing kernel u need to use it's built in recovery/ies) or they are not related (like e.g. ASUS Transformer devices (where recovery can be flashed using fastboot or by itself and kernel is flashed using recovery)?
At first specify exact model of ur device
Sorry, forgot that this is multi model forum. My model is L7 P700. But I think that to answer my question, device model is probably irrelevant.
As I didn't want to wait for answer I can answer my own question.
I used guide from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2486512
But used recovery.img with TWRP 2.8.6.0 and than CyanHacker 2.0.0 and Monster Kernel.
And after flashing kernel TWRP stayed as default (and only) recovery.
So answer is: It's like on ASUS devices, where recovery is not related to kernel (has it's own partition), not like in Sony/SE where it's part of it (now there is possible access to /recovery partition as well).
Thread can be closed.

1. Install acer recovery installer from market. This apk is free.
2. Keep with you the .zip or .image file of recovery which you want to install and place it in sd card.
3. Run the apk and select install from sd card.
4. If apk do not detect .zip file in your sd card than extract recovery.image from that file and store it in sd card.

The real answer is if you have ICS, to install a custom recover or custom kernel you must have an unlocked bootloader.
The following resources are related to the new bootloader, a quick read of the OPs of the first two are highly recommended, even if you install with the third link. (This is to have a highlevel idea of what you are changing on your device, as it will help you find what you need to look closer at in future if something goes wrong, or possibly prevent a problem in the first case)
bootloader thread
civato's guide
Afterota tool (windows users bootloader install tool)
If you already have the unlocked bootloader installed, but can't boot into recovery:
This is likely because you have a stock ICS rom overwritting recovery with the stock recovery in every boot; either use fastboot or (if you have root) a program such as acer recovery installer to force the install of a recovery and immediately reboot into it. (Most bootloader installers will also install a recovery that you can immediately boot into)
Once in recovery you can backup/restore/or install a rom modified to prevent the overwrite of recovery. (More advanced users can stop this from adb by removing some files)
Personally I use a lightly modified version of the stock rom you are using now:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1661492
it ought to be safe to do a no wipe update to that and receive a more expected environment with a custom recovery, optional custom OC kernel, and busybox support.
However if you explore the dev section, many other (both more and less modified) versions of ICS roms exist. Themed and otherwise. So feel free to explore.

My two devices are a Sony Xperia T and a Google Nexus 10. For the last 24 hours, my Xperia T has tilal's OmniROM build and I'm waiting for some official nightly to install to my N10.
I've seen from Xperia T that OmniROM's recovery of choice is TWRP. Personally speaking, I'm a fan of the simplicity of CWM.
Now my question is, are we able to replace the TWRP recovery with CWM? Or it will break certain things and the phone/tablet will become unusable?
I've found that Nexus 10 has a thread where the newest CWM recovery image file is posted, so changing that will be easy. But for Xperia T (and for Sony devices in general), the Clockworkmod site (http://www.clockworkmod.com/rommanager) doesn't offer any recoveries. For Xperia T, the last CWM recovery image was posted by tilal more than a year ago, and I believe a lot of things have changed since then.
So, my second question is, in case we are able to replace the default recovery, would it be safe to use one built by the official CWM recovery builder? (http://builder.clockworkmod.com/)
Thanks in advance for any answer!

Recovery builder will most likely fail with devices that use a unified kernel (recovery and normal operation in one image). I think Dees_Troy's FOTAKernel trick is implemented on the blue family in addition to the fusion3 family, but I'm not sure.
Building CWM in an omni tree is not possible - CWM has too many tentacles throughout the entire Android source tree to allow it to build, TWRP is much more self-contained.

Thank you for your answer, Entropy512! So, basically, from what I understand there's no way using CWM recovery with any OmniROM build.
I guess we'll have to get used to TWRP, the only problem to that being the fact that I (and many others from what I see in the Xperia T forum) have problem accessing their internal storage using TWRP. Strange thing is that this wasn't the case in CWM.

Then there's probably a TWRP configuration issue that needs to be resolved in Omni - And it may be a result of temporary KitKat fallout. The recipe for getting storage working on the blue family in kitkat is... convoluted... This is resulting from the fact that the blue family have non-unified storage that is formatted as ext4 AND uses nonstandard UID/GID - no other device has this configuration. It's either FAT on /sdcard or unified storage (/sdcard is emulated on /data/media).
If you find a recent CWM FOTAKernel installation that should work - but almost all FOTAKernel approaches were used to replace CWM with TWRP, not the other way around.
Welcome to the “All Things” Razr I Index thread. This Index thread contains basic information about the Motorola Razr I a.k.a. XT890 to get you started. It won’t contain any KERNEL and ROM Development, because of the numerous kernels and roms people can make. It would just flood this thread if it happens.
All the work that is presented in this thread belong to their rightful owners. I just sorted them and linked the threads in here.
Everything that u do to your phone it totally your own responsibility. Nobody here or elsewhere can be held account for a failure in flashing, device bricked or a rom problem if u tempered with your own device. But maybe we can help if u ask nicely.
This Index thread contains the following in this order:

Each thread/sections can contain “important” notes
Do your research before doing anything
Read the information the owner of the thread gives u
Highly recommended to have a look at the ‘warnings, bricked devices solutions/discussions’ threads before using RSD-Lite and fastboot commands like flashing manual firmware versions.
Last note:
If u find something missing that should definitely be in this Index thread, please share.
If u find anything wrong and u know the answer, please share.
Can someone have a look at the downgrade section. That’s the only one I don’t know for sure.

Downgrade problems JB -> ICS | Black screen green led | service required code currupt
Downgrading from JB to ICS with a locked bootloader is bad. According to a lot of users it will give u a bricked device. This is because RSD-Lite can also flash the motoboot (bootloader), gpt.bin (partition table) and motobp (radio?) and those 3 may never be downgraded only upgraded. Can only be resolved at a service station.
With an unlocked bootloader it is possible, but then again, don’t flash the motoboot, gpt.bin and motobp!

Unbricking JB to ICS downgraded hardbricks (Maart, 2013)
This is a unbrick method when u have the following message: Service Required Code Corrupt or black screen - green light. But be careful. This fix can help most of the problems, but not all because of the firmware differences. If it doesn't work for you, have a look at the one below. The owner and thread is still worth mentioning because of the finding of a possible fix, the many devices the owner saved and the discussion about the problem that came along.
Unbricking "Service Required Code Corrupt" (May, 2013)
A better documented unbrick method as the one above, but the same. Still won’t help everybody. But won’t harm your device more than it can and already is if u need this. Only for downgrade problems, everything other needs RSD-Lite or Jellybean versions of the files.
Other issues/discussions
Locked Bootloader, can't access Recovery
If u have a locked bootloader and u can’t access the recovery anymore and even RSD-Lite (latest version) with stock firmware (JB) won't work, there is no possible way to resurrect it, yet. Most of the time it means that you have a bad sector in your EMMC (flash memory) and with a locked bootloader it can’t be erased/written to.
PDS Partition Fix (July, 2014)
In TWRP recovery u can erase PDS. Never do it! Will be fixed when 4.4 is out.
Issue Locked bootloader
If u have any issue with your phone (bootloop, stuck on bootlogo) and u have a locked bootloader, try the following:
Reboot to stock recovery
Do a "factory reset"
If that doesn't solve it, flash your original firmware (JB) with RSD-Lite! Make sure u use one of the latest versions of RSD-Lite, 6.1.x. 6.1.5 is the latest (Augustus, 2014)
Unlocked bootloader
If u have any issue with your phone (bootloop, stuck on bootlogo) and u have a unlocked bootloader, try the following (all staps are on there own. If one doesn't work, try another):
Reflash your custom ROM if u use one (don't wipe) (Renews your system partition, stays of your data)
Wipe your data/cache in recovery (does what it says)
Wipe partitions system/data/cache and flash new rom (reflash whole new system)
Do a nandroid restore if u have a nandroid backup of the rom (restore a previous nandroid)
Do a RSD-Lite flash, use latest versions of your stock firmware and RSD-Lite. (reflash to complete stock)
H. DOWNGRADE TO ICS
If u still want to downgrade from JB to ICS for whatever reason, those are the most save methods, because we disable the flashing of the ‘motoboot’, ‘gpt.bin’ and 'motobp'. There are 2 methods, 1 is by RSD-Lite with a modified xml file and the other one is flashing all the files manually. CANNOT BE DONE WITH LOCKED BOOTLOADER only unlocked!!!
RSD Lite:
Follow and read one of the tutorials for RSD-Lite and download your ICS Stock version of your device!
Set everything up and before flashing remove the following lines from the included XML file of the firmware u want to flash:
Code:
“<step operation= “flash” partition= “gpt” filename= “gpt_signed” MD5= “*****”>”
“<step operation= “flash” partition= “motoboot” filename= “motoboot” MD5= “*****”>”
“<step operation= “flash” partition= “motobp” filename= “motobp” MD5= “*****”>”
U maybe need to delete the following line also:
Code:
“<step operation= “getvar” var=”max-download-size”
U should be good to go!
Manually:
For manually flashing we need “mFastboot”. See GERNERAL (DEV) Tools for more information.
Download your firmware and extract it.
Now use the following commands in a command prompt. Make sure they are correctly spelled and return an “OKEY”!
Code:
[LIST]
[*]mfastboot flash boot boot_signed
[*]mfastboot flash recovery recovery_signed
[*]mfastboot flash system system_signed
[*]mfastboot erase cache
[*]mfastboot erase userdata
[/LIST]

Backup your important data from your phone to PC or elsewhere
Get RSD-Lite working
Download the latest official android firmware for your device. (Always jellybean, unless u had ICS installed before the custom rom and to be on the safe side, never used a Jellybean version, then u can try ICS too)
Flash through RSD-Lite
Enormous post hazou! THank's a lot for all your work!

To flash a working logo image u need the bootloader (motoboot) from ICS. But if u flash the motoboot from ICS coming from a jellybean rom (is using the motoboot from jellybean) u will brick your device. (unless as stated, u have never bean on stock JB or installed the firmware from stock JB and u flashed from stock ICS to KTR-rom. So u have the stock ICS bootloader. But i think nobody in this world has that anymore.)
The bootloader and its necessary files may never be downgraded!! I will make a point in the guide to address your question.
So, to answer your question. No u can't!
OK , thanks hazou !
There is definitively no solutions to remove this shi...of bootscreen ....

Hello,
I am just new with Samsung smartphones, previously I was on some other devices such Nexus which are easier to mod.
I would like to tweak the kernel( I already got the sources) to add few things but I need for that eventually the ramdisk and the kernel image to make a boot image.
I wanted to download the latest firmware, hoping a default boot image was integrated in it and that I could unpack but I got issue and connection loss so I can't even take a look at it.
I think I will be able to get the boot image with the dd command but to do so I need to be in a mod recovery(such twrp) and currently I can't.
Thx u
Firstly you've created a voting thread. If this is a standard question I suggest in future you leave the options at default.
Why can't you use TWRP?
My build also supports raw image backup of the boot partition.
Sorry about creating wrong thread type

Woot Yeah I didn't know about that!
So I can just get the current boot image, unpack it, replace with my kernel image, repack and done.
And then flash the boot image throw a zip install or your extended function.
Btw, I am was looking over the net but couldn't find an exact answer to this extra Q, is there any fastboot mode ? So I can just boot in a custom kernel image before flashing it.
Yep, just backup the boot partition using twrp.
Locate the boot image backup in the twrp backup folder.
Unpack it, make your mods, rename it boot.img, copy it to internal or external storage and flash it with TWRP using the INSTALL button.
Samsung devices dont have a fastboot mode.
@ashyx answered my questions, thx to him!
>Samsung devices dont have a fastboot mode.
My latest Samsung Tablet has a fastboot mode but it was manufactured around the end of 2012 ... So it is not quite recent
I've never known a Samsung device to use FASTBOOT, so that's news to me.
Samsung uses its own proprietary ODIN mode.
Which device is this?
Ahhah you gonna say I am half of a lier.
It was my nexus 10. Built by Samsung and running the 5250 exynos chip
Hello,
I am using kingwear 98 (kw98)
https://www.smartwatchspecifications.com/Device/kingwear-kw98/
It's a smart watch based on MTK6580.
I am trying to understand what is the best method to install twrp on mediatek devices.
1. Is it by using the magic twrp installer ?
2. Or by manually porting twrp to our specific device , as seen in some tutorials here (porting twrp with same chipset into socket recovery)?
Well, actually I did try a 3rd option:[/B][/B]
3. I tried to use AllCall-W1_recovery recovery.img ( which has the same chipset).
https://mega.nz/#!kfgmmRRD!RcvPwf0Jc-BAwM4Sf9fYJrmF3DsTQTEYtE2LVeWyE10
Surprisingly it worked . Yet, after several days without issues, last week it became dead.
So, I don't understand how it worked in the first place (it is same chipset, but probably use totally different interface , and drivers ! ) , and if it became dead because something it might be wrong to put same recovery image of another device, without. proper porting.
So, should I flash same image (allcall W1 recovery) again on a new kw98 device that I will buy, or use one of the above methods (port twrp manually into my stock, or install magic twrp for mediatek).
Thank you,
ranran
