Good afternoon everyone! I have been looking for a forum to hit up that isn't stack-overflow for android developing and a friend pointed me here. Currently my experience with android is very minimal, I am working on a simple (simple is read, "Dear god what did I get myself into") project for school with no background in this sort of platform. I program in PHP and C# primarily and thought that this project would be a fun way to immerse myself in Android.
The application I am writing is a sort of life style app to gather daily eating habits from the user in an attempt to make you feel bad about your terrible eating choices and get you to eat better. If anyone is familiar with Good Eats I am basing the app around Alton Brown's 4 list diet.
Here is where the issues have started:
I constantly feel like I am coding myself into a corner and have started over a number of times, there seem to be many ways of gathering this information from the user but non of which seem very cut and dry with database interactions.
What I am looking for is a way to gather the day and list choices from a user (for the lists I was using dialog check boxes spawned from buttons but this doesn't seem to be the best way to do it as I cannot figure out how to store the checked off boxes within the dialog).
So my noob question is, are there any tutorials dealing with basic data gathering and storage?
Thanks for your time and look forward to hanging out on these forums more regularly.

this may help:
create variables for each checkbox that can be checked
in your dialog interface onClick if (isChecked) { variable = 'which';}
then enter it into your database when submitted. Then when you query just correlate the variable to the corresponding string name
this may help as well (go down to the multi/single choice list)

Hi, all. I've searched the forums here and on Mozilla's site for this - to no avail (so far). I'm hoping someone might know of this - or at least point me in the right direction.
Sprint GS4
Android 4.2.2
Firefox 24 (mobile)
PLEASE NOTE: Galaxy S4 features: Air view, Motions and gestures, :ALL DISABLED
I've noticed that as I'm hovering my finger over links, an underline appears on the screen corresponding to the link I'm hovering over. Sometimes, if my finger(s) linger too long, the link is selected - without making physical contact with the screen. While this is a really 'neato' feature (I'm sure *someone* thinks it's neat), it can - and does - cause mis-clicks - which can potentially be a safety/security issue (as far as I'm concerned).
I have searched the device and have disabled all features related to gestures (see Please Note, above), yet I still experience this issue. I've also done searches in FF's about:config (although I may not be using the correct terminology to find the feature), to no avail.
I'd simply like to disable this feature and go back to the [slightly] safer, friendlier, physically-required click of the link. I want to follow links I choose to follow, not end up somewhere I don't want to be - or downloading something I don't want because of this annoying hover feature.
Thanks in advance!
Got my U8 today and here's my initial impression:
Plus - 1. Immediately went to English, no Chinese. EZ setup. 2. Several choices for watch faces. Several choices for menu icons. Some are color and big. 3. Love the vibration for notification. 4. Speaker while on phone good. 5. Phone pick up works good.
Cons - 1. Washes out in sunlight bad. That's a show stopper for me. 2. Have to turn off phone Bluetooth and use handset for a private call. Switch is in my phone app and simple but still. 3. I use Touchdown for email and it doesn't notify on the watch. Working on that. 4. Band seems a bit 'soft', not hard rubber.
Added Con - Not having the watch face constantly lit is driving me nuts!

Hi rogerperk,
Some image to your statement is very much appreciate.
Thanks
I was just looking at one of these on ebay today. Are you able to reply to text messages through it? Does it have voice input as well as a keyboard?

I bought a Pebble. Regardless of whether the U8 has voice input or not if I can't see the face they it's useless to me. And outside that is the case. If that doesn't matter then I'd be willing to sell you mine for a cheaper price than you'll get on line. Wore it a total of 2 days.

Thanks but I'll pass. I'm going to stick with my MotoActv for now unless I can pick up a cheap Galaxy Gear or either the LG G-watch or Moto360 convinces me when released.

LOL good choice! The longer I have my Pebble the better I like it.
Just got mine today
Hey Roger,
Been following another thread ("Elegance U8") and now this one since ordering mine off Ebay a week ago. Got it in the mail today, and I can see your points for both pro and con.
Here are my questions, if anyone knows. (yet)
I remember seeing what the actual phone OS is called somewhere, but can't find it now. EDIT: It's called "Nucleus." Have found some info and a sample download online. Might try and see if I can learn how to develop for it.Though the device plays nice with Android and ios, it's actually neither of those things. If someone knows what the name of it is, is it possible to find a tutorial on coding it somewhere?
The initial reason I ask is:
Not waiting for the manufacturer to patch the "shut off screen" function. I'd like to see if I can figure out how to do this myself, and
Enabling texting. Rather than a traditional keyboard, am thinking a sliding alphabet. A - slide to B - slide to C, etc. A pain in the butt, but probably less so than trying to use a keyboard. Picture the "carousel" from the Kindle Fire series, but with letters / numbers / symbols. Also, as suggested earlier in this thread texting with use of the mic, if possible.
Not saying I'd be able to do any of this, but I have limited experience doing some dev work in Android (through Unity) and am wondering if it's possible to self teach this OS, figuring that we quite probably won't see a lot of feature updates from whoever the manufacturer is of this product.
Thanks, and God bless.
If you do develop, please keep us updated. i like the watch but would love to be able to reply to messages. let me know if i can help any also in the development
Does anyone have the latest firmware for the smart watch?
Mine is: M28_KHR.FN1.V04
Regards.
Conect, was wondering if you'd gotten anywhere with OS development for this watch?
Is this the one you got, this is the one i have but the icons and analog faces are different... ?

I've had my watch for about a week now, and I gotta say, for the price, it's pretty killer! I wish there was more development for it besides distributing firmware and flash tools.
I've noticed that when you activate Google Voice search and texting with the watch connected, it uses the watch mic to pick up your voice. I was thinking it might be cool to find a way to trigger voice search and voice texting from the watch, since you can already use it for voice input as long as you trigger the feature on your phone. Have you made any progress on trying to develop for the u8?
Also, I believe I read that they're going to release an SDK for MediaTek devices, such as this watch. Might be interesting to see if anything comes of that.
Wish there was a way to add a count down timer to this watch. It needs to have the timer with a start/stop button on the screen as well a reset button for the timer. so If I set it to 30secons, when I hit the reset after the 30s is up it will reset it back to 30secs again.
I need to root my phone so I can turn off a few notifications that I do not want to transmit.
driver instalation problem
helo,
maybe in wrong thread, but if anyone could help i would be grateful. my windows 8 dont recognise u8 watch, and i cant install provided drivers for vista. i'm stuck, and i would like to instal firmware, but without watch been recognised its not posible. thanx
Is there a way to make the U8 vibrate when you receive a text message or have a phone call?
I was wondering if anyone has found a way to get different faces on this watch. I believe mine may be a clone.
Okay, so I've been surfing the web for a few weeks/months now but I can't seem to find any decent tutorial for my query.
With high hopes, can anyone show me how to do it on a single activity with at least 10 questions each?
I'm currently developing an M-Learning application. So aside for all the reading materials and somewhat simulations,
I need to present a quiz that will ask users at least 10 - 15 items per chapter.
I'll be presenting it on a graph as well for the user's profile. (But that's another issue I'd tackle later on)
Currently, all I have now was moving from one activity to another and vice versa.
Can anyone please guide me? I'd modify this if it doesn't clarify anything.
Please take interest. Am still a student though.

Since you have a quiz app I'd recommend a swipe view with 4 radio buttons and a spinner with the chapter in the action bar or chapter list in the navigation drawer. Use 1 fragment and dynamically change the text for each fragment and inflate the swipe views. That way lesser resources.

Hi there once again.
I was able to pull off the Swipe View. However, I wanted to ask if this scenario is possible.
I wanted to build the quiz in a single activity only. Is this possible?
Button A ---> QuizActivity(Set1)
Button B ---> QuizActivity(Set2)
I want the quiz to happen on a single activity only but with different set of questions as triggered by different buttons.
Is this possible? And how will I pull this one.
Thanks.
So you want to have a set of buttons and depending on the button (category of questions) clicked you want to start a quiz of that category?
Simple answer to your question though is yes, u can have a quiz in a single activity if you wish.

Hello Everyone
This is my first post to this site, so I'd firstly like to extend a hearty "hello" to you all and a big thank you for taking the time to read my post.
As the title suggests, I'm looking for a means to enable GPS remotely, on my Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge using Tasker. I never have GPS on because I rearely (if ever) need it, and it saves battery; but this doesn't help me if I lose my phone, or if its stolen. In order for Google's 'Find my Device' or 'Lookout' to find my phone with any degree of success, GPS needs to be on. But, I won't be able to do this if I don't have my phone.
I'm looking for a means to enable this feature remotely using Tasker. I don't mind what the trigger is i.e. e-mail to my account with a specific subject line, a text from another phone etc. Just so long as I can enable it remotely. I should point out however that my phone is not rooted as yet, however I am happy to do this if it is necessary.
Prior to posting here, I made sure to research into the issue, and a few posts suggested using an app called 'Secure Settings' in conjunction with Taskers 'Run Shell' feature, and the following commands to enable GPS:
Code:
settings put secure location_providers_allowed +gps
settings put secure location_providers_allowed +network
Before using the Secure Settings app, Tasker wouldn't let me do this, stating that the ability to do this had been disabled from an earlier Android version, but after installing it and selecting the option to allow secure access to GPS, it then allowed me to do it. However, that being said, the commands don't do anything, and do not enable GPS on my phone.
I don't suppose anyone here knows how to achieve what I'm looking to do, and could provide some basic step-by-step instructions on how to achieve it? I would certainly be very grateful.
Thanks for taking the time to read my post and I appreciate any and all feedback you may have.
All the best,
Malachor.
