I was curious if it was possible to use the Nexus Player as a wifi router.
I imagine there is some way to have the nexus player connect directly to a cable modem via USB ethernet adapter and use the Nexus Player as an 802.11ac router for my other devices, but I am unsure how to implement this.
Ideally, the Nexus Player would retain it's original functionality.
If instead I were to install a custom ROM [like Lollirock] would I be able to access the standard settings for "Tethering & portable hotspot" and enable the Nexus Player as a W-Fi hotspot, and if so, would it be at 802.11ac speeds?
This would enable me to forego buying a newer router to take advantage of the 802.11ac speeds of my devices, and save me like $100.
Anybody wanna chime in here?
I have a feeling this wouldn't work as android doesn't tether wifi - it tethers lte data. My tether disables wifi when I'm tethering on my phone. Also I can't imagine it would have a very strong signal output as it wasn't designed to act as a router

I'm not trying to tether my 3g/4g connection. I want to connect to Wi-Fi with my phone and then have another device connect to my phone's Wi-Fi connection.
The reason I'm trying to do this is because upstairs I have a good connection with my phone to Wi-Fi, but my Google tv can barely connect to my router.
It's this possible? Thanks for any help!

I think your talking about wifi tether and it is possible, go to wireless and network settings and select tethering and portable hospot
So you basically want to use your phone as a WiFi range extender? No, that's not possible because the phone cannot connect and broadcast a WiFi network simultaneously. Buy an apple airport express. I've used it for that exact purpose, and it worked really well.

Is it possible to use the portable hotspot feature on the nexus 4 to create a LAN? ie. Chromecast without a wifi network. The idea being that you set up a LAN on the N4, which Chromecast connects to, without needing a wifi network.
Hi,
I got the Asus N56 router and would like to extend the wireless range of my Note 3 by having it connected via USB.
I am using the app WiFi Tether Router to generally tether, but it seems I need to enable USB Tethering in system options to have it work with the router. However, this is the official option from T-Mobile so if I enable it, it will use my tether/hotspot limit for the month.
Is there any way I can hide that for USB tethering? Or has the WiFi Tether router any option I miss for that?
Also, I do not need to set the router into AP mode for that, right?
Thanks
Galaxy S4 on CM13...if it matters
So here's my predicament. I've been using my S4 connected to Xfinity wifi as ethernet to my laptop then have my laptop set as a wifi hotspot for my other devices. I no longer have an Xfinity account but my old LG Leon is still active in their system for some reason, so I've changed the MAC on my S4 to meet the leons (Leon has broken screen) until they finally decide to drop it. Then I use MHotspot to allow my other devices to use the net. Convoluted way of doing things, but it works...sorta.
Problem is the data stream from MHotspot is super slow at 0.5-1.5mbps on Speedtest to my other devices (with only one connected to the hotspot) while the PC gets around 15mbps. However if I use the free hour directly from the PC WiFi and enable MHotspot to leech that connection, my other devices get full speed.
What gives? Any insight?

Wifi hotspot connection is not the same as a wired ethernet. In a wifi network, all devices will be sharing the available bandwidth. If your bandwidth for instance is 54mbps, it means all devices connected to your wifi network will be sharing this bandwidth. The more devices, the less bandwidth. And even if it is a mixed network of a/b/g/n, the network will perform at the pace of the slowest device. But in an ethernet network and if you're using a switch but not a hub, all devices will have the same bandwidth of the ethernet network, either 10mbps, 100mbps, 1000mbps depending on your switch capability and cabling used.
I was wondering if anyone on VZW new unlimited plan who relies on Mobile Hotspot for their home (multiple devices) to try if this works. The idea is to turn your phone into a "Internet Service Provider" [figure speech] and share the internet with your other devices without being throttled after using those 15GB for your mobile hotspot allowance. I believe it could be accomplished with 4 items:
1- A USB type C to Ethernet adapter like this one
2- A Router (perhaps a dual band router but not really necessary)
3- PDANet App and activate USB Tethering from it
4- An Ethernet Cable to connect the adapter to the Router
From previous experience using PDANet, I was able to provide internet to my laptop from which I created a LAN and utilized a Cat5 cable to get my PS3 connected to play online since I didn't have a router. It appeared that I was using regular data instead of tethering.
