Storage Space Issues - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi I have been having issues with running out of storage space on my new S5 and was wondering if anyone here knew of any good apps to help me out that wouldn't involve me loosing my precious media files as I dont have a pc at the moment and have nothing else to store these files on, I know you can compress files on a pc and was wondering if there is any good apps out there for this ? another way Ive thought of would be to get a app like ccleaner but for my phone and again does anyone know of any good apps for this ? If anyone else has any ideas or knows of any other ways I would be able to save storage space, also doesn't matter if the apps are paid or not but I won't be rooting my phone for awhile yet.
Any help/advice etc is greatly appreciated and my phone is only a 16GB with a 32GB sd card (Yes Ive realised this isn't enough but can't afford a bigger sd card yet)
BTW I dont know a whole hell of alot about this phone yet

Try Clean Master.

The stock storage manager in the stock settings works pretty well foe the internal sd card, breaks down everything by whats taking what, even lets you clear the cache.

You should try clearing cache. I had a similar storage problem on my S3 Mini and when I cleared cache, boom, everything was back to normal

[Q] Issue with phone memory

Greetings all
I have a HD2 running Android. The ROM is DL DesireZ v2 internal. software number 1.72.466.4
I am at an understanding there is a new version out but the flash I have atm is 100% working besides one thing....the phone memory.
When I first flashed it I had loads of phone memory, I think it was like what, 150mb?
But I downloaded lots of apps, even used the Apps2Sd app to save space on the phone memory.
So after a while, I ran out of phone memory, how? I have no idea.
I have deleted all the apps I had and I still have <10mb space on my phone memory and I can not find ANYTHING on the phone memory taking up this space.
Anyone else have this issue?
My gf is going nuts at me over this, she said she may as well have the Win 6.5 back on it, since she had no apps anyways
Cheers,
Gib
yea i have the same problem..
all my apps are installed on my sd card or my ext3 partition.
still i have very little phone memory available.
somehow it looks like the phone is saving the app on the phone but then moving it to the sd card without removing it on the phone memory and causing data loss?
also when updating an app i just lose a lot of internal memory..
how is it possible that there are a lot of people with this problem (i searched the forums) and nobody know an answer to this?

When I'm in storage mode.......

.....connected to my laptop all the apps I have located on my ext SD card disappear which I understand but when my Atrix is unplugged the apps I have stored don't reappear on my home screens.
They have to be manually put back on.
Does anyone know why this is.....it's doing my head in.
I'm running the Alien 4 rom with Faux123 kernel if that matters.
Cheers
Paul

I don't understand why people move apps to sd on a phone that doesn't need it.

For the same reason you cant access anything else on the SD card when in storage mode, the OS has to unmount it while the computer has access, thus you cant use anything on it including apps, this is normal.
To the first reply, cause I want to and to the second, read my question again. I said I know why they disappear when connected but don't know why they don't return when the device is unplugged.
Never had the problem on either of my 2 desires and wondered if it was Atrix or maybe ROM specific.
Don't post unless you can help. Thanks.
Ah i missed that part :-(..... In that case no idea never tried it as I have 1.2GB free of app storage.
Do they appear in the apps list?
Tried restarting the phone?
Tried a media scan (not sure if it will pick up apps)
Sounds like your ROM is not scanning the sdcard after remounting it.

No probs Nap and thanks Dennis, tried it mate but no joy.
Looks like I'll just use internal storage for ease from now as it gets boring adding them all back after a while.
Thanks anyway tho
you could always buy the dual mount SD program, best .99c I have spent so far. It allows you to mount and still access the sd on the phone. it is very helpful for me.
I had an issue with my ringtones that are located on storage being jacked up during mounts. the issue would occur when I had a notification, call, text, anything that made a noise that used a custom tone while mounted to a PC. After unmount the notification would either revert to default or choose a completely random tone.
I downloaded dualmount a few months back and that issue was resolved. I havent had to reset my notifications except when I flashed to CM, and I can live with that

Constant Reboots

need your advice on this, I've just unbox my Galaxy Note few days ago, it keeps rebooting itself, one time I was copying data from the SD card to the other storage in the phone suddenly it reboots. I've had unknown reboots. Now using XXLA4 and seems doesnt solve the issue. Any ideas or suggestions?
Make sure all your applications are licated on internal SD

Have you tried changing sd cards?

yep they are all on my internal SD ... any ideas> Thanks
1 Does it happen after you load your applications or on a clean Rom as well? Could be a app that's causing it.
2 the xla 4 install could have been a bad flash. Did you check the MD 5?

Do one thing just clear your dalvik cache.. i was facing same thing...
so now at the moment my note is in constant reboot mode, don't know if I should let it, I haven't root my devices yet I tried every method available on this homepage but doesnt seem to work at all. I tried installing some games on my note this morning, it failed to download and ever since that it reboots all the time. Any suggestion?
Edit: Now it stops rebooting when I plugged in the USB charger but it says the temperature of the battery is too low or too high and it doesn't charged

welcome to the club, i am in the same boat.
my phone works fine all times without sd card but sometimes goes crazy (restaring / freezing constantly for 7-8h non stop!) with sd card in situ.
some of my apps are on internal 1.9gb memory, some on internal 11gb memory, some on external card. trying to figure out how to force on stock unrooted device to force all apps to internal memory (1.9gb or 11gb) to prevent these issues. or will try new card. my old card works fine on my htc desire. dont know if the htc folders present on sd card are causing soem issues
have tried with apps2sd pro and stock app mnager to move apps to internal 11gb memory. but the phone has a mind of its own and some stay on 1.9gb internal memory some go to 11gb internal memory and some go to external sd card and i cant seem to force moveable apps to internal 11gb memory only instead of sd card as mentioned in the other concurrent thread today on this topic.
Hi,
I also had similar problem like this. It appears that the Android Program at times cannot seem to access the Ext SD card program/s installed and that will cause a reboot and repeated so.
I really do not why this is happening? It will seem to work fine ant reboot when the Ext SD is removed - but those programs installed in the Ext. SD will no longer be accessible.
There is a hidden folder in the Ext. SD ".android_secure" which contain all the programs transferred to that Ext. SD. If you empty this folder of it programs by transferring them to your PC and reinsert the Ext. SD card, it will function normally and you can access your file like photos, videos, music, and ebooks. But you will not be able to access your programs in the Ext. SD.
I had tried un-installing the apps in the Ext SD and re-installing them into Phone memory it will work but it will not transfer to Int. SD (the 11 GB) and keep informing me there is no Ext SD. This of course will eat up all the 1.9 GB of the Phone memory, which is not what I had wanted. Although I still have a lot of memory in the Int. SD (about 8 GB) it will not transfer there, why I am not sure.
Can some of the Android expert please look into this problem and advise. Thank you.

Hi,
How do you make sure all the Apps are located in the Internal SD?
I have an Ext SD and some apps are transferred there. I cannot transfer these apps into the Int SD.
I uninstalled the apps and reinstall them without the Ext SD and then try to transfer to Int SD. It will not transfer and a message "you do not have an Ext SD card"
Will appreciate any assistance. Thank you.
I don't have any apps installed on the internal SD nor external SD, I notice this that everytime an app failed to complete (eg loading) it goes to looping reboots. The last one I was playing some game something called mission, cannot remember the game name, it was loading all the time then I decided to switch it off and turn it on again. It goes constant reboot. I need a good phone which doesn't rebooot all the time ...

Its seems like you had an issue with leakage current on cpu. Its caused the battery drain fast and heat up. The only solution is to change the main board. Well, this is use to happen on htc phone. Not sure on sammy phone

yeah my phone also used to reboot after some time... the problem i found was the installation of an app called es file explorer... i disabled the app and it works flawlessly...so some of the app on your phone might be causing you the problem...

Clearing up storage space

The S5 that I have is one I got as a warranty replacement last summer. It's running stock Lollipop rooted.
It's been running fine except for the fact that it's developed some lag. I mean that when I'm typing on the keyboard, it will sometimes hang for about 10 seconds and then turbo type all that I've typed to catch up. Also the lock screen will sometimes hang unresponsive for about 10 seconds, until it realizes that I want in and then let me type my pattern. I've also noticed that storage is getting full as sometimes I can't install App updates due to insufficient memory. I did install an app that managed to clean up about a half GB of internal storage, but that's not much. I know that If I was to do a factory reset with a reinstall of the apps, I'd have about 4 GB free. I could do that but it's a time consuming process and I'd have to spend time backing up apps and data with titanium... and Yes, I know about fixing the folder permissions after restoring with Titanium. Does someone know what is removed that does not get replaced with a factory wipe and reinstall? Is there something like a cache that I can delete to get to the end result of this work? What I'd like to know is if there is a shortcut to free memory that is not an app that I have to run every week or so.
Secondarily, the 64GB card I have in the phone is getting full. Yes... I know there are a lot of videos/photos/music on it, but there is a lot of old crap on it as well. When I upgraded to the S5 from my previous Android 2 phone, I upgraded the card from 32GB to 64GB. Not knowing what I needed and didn't, I simply copied everything over to the new card and plugged it in. I'm sure there probably exists a lot of junk from my old phone that I can delete. I have been thinking of getting a 128GB card, but before I do, I'd like to know what directories/files i could delete rather than just moving the entire card contents to the new card and moving along. Is there a good tutorial that I can read to understand what is stored on the card and what might not be necessary?

S7 Edge 32gb (Exynos) (No root) accidentally formatted adaptive storage.

Hi all, hoping anyone could help me. I have an Exynos s7 edge launch version, (32gb) Which has never been rooted, and has had a 256gb micro SD used as adaptive storage.
Lately, large apps have not been able to install, with the phone constantly saying the phone is full, even though the micro SD is not full, with well over 50 -100 gb free on the external card which should be used with the adaptive storage.
I tried to re-migrate the data to fix the problem, and selected export or whatever the option there is, and the damn phone reformatted the SD card without asking me if I wanted to format.
Obviously this has ruined the adaptive storage, and screwed much of my data.
I had backed up bare basics with helium, but months of data and photos are not backed up.
Now I can't even open my camera, I am feeling somewhat sick and am very worried all of my photos of my family and all of the books and game data I had is gone.
Is there a way to solve this disaster?
I thought this thread may help anyone else who is in a similar bind, as I could not find anything about this particular problem by googling it.
If anyone can help, I would really appreciate it, are deleted data recovery programs and completely starting again my only options?
Where do I go from here? Thanks for reading this thread, and for any help offered.
Samsung must have really been joking when offering only 32gb and no supported adaptive storage on a beast of a phone like the s7.
Bumping this thread if anyone can help, still trying to fix my phone. Removed the SD card that contained the adaptive storage, and have not done any more to the SD card with the phone since the phone formatted it.
I attempted several data recovery programs on windows 7, but have yet to recover anything much. Just files in formats that are not very recognisable to me.
Anyone know if data can be recovered from the SD card the S7 formatted which contained the adaptive storage?
It is easy enough to recover data from a formatted hdd, but I do not know if data can be recovered from a formatted micro SD with Android OS. Does anyone know if it similar to the stripes on a RAID array? Is the data split between the internal sdd and the external?
This question has had 77 views and no responses, if anyone has some detailed knowledge they can share, I would appreciate it.
The S7 gave no warning it was going to format the drive, it just said it had completed the format. Is there any way back from this? I cannot even get the camera to start anymore, and a lot data and photos and game data and pdfs was lost.
If something concrete and verifiable could be marked down in this thread, it could help other people who have this problem, as Samsung seems unwilling to support a feature many people need.
