Question about wiping and when to do - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I'd like to know when I have to wipe my when I flash a new firmware or a samsung based rom for knox 0x0 reasons. Do I have to wipe BEFORE I flash the firmware or do I have to wipe AFTER I flashed the firmware? I don't want to wipe so often and I think one time should be enough, shouldn't it?
For example: I'm on stock 5.0 lollipop. I have to downgrade to 4.4.2 to use Towelroot. Is it enough to wipe my phone after I've flashed the 4.4.2 firmware or do I HAVE to wipe my phone before? If so, why?

Bump. I'd really like to know!

If you're downgrading, then I'll assume you are flashing a tar with Odin. In that case it wipe your phone anyway, you can wipe before if you want to. Not necessary though. When flashing custom roms you always wipe before. You should really google this stuff or search for the info here.

So why do people tell us to wipe the phone if the tar file wipes the phone anyway? For example the Knox 0x0 roms.

It's a good habit to get into

[Q] Safe to update?

So, I'm on Stock 4.3, with Xposed Framework and franco kernel. My question is, can I flash the factory image for 4.4 directly, or do I need to wipe data/cache? I know I'll lose Xposed since it's not supported for 4.4 yet, so if my first question is not possible, and I have to wipe, I might as well get a custom rom. A second question is, once Xposed is available for 4.4, can I return from custom rom to stock one just by flashing factory image, without wiping data? Thanks!
to flash the factory img, you have to flash it via fastboot. itll wipe out your partitions when you do flash it, so wiping anything is pointless.
So I'll lose all data anyway if I update? Well damn.

Not sure, but i would start with the basics--
1. Don't use Factory Reset. Do it manually thru Advanced. Wipe System/Data/Caches 3
2. Flash 4.3 rom for your phone before flashing a 4.4.
3. If you continue to have issues back up your internal sdcard to pc and format it then reinstall the data.
2.5.0.2 has been rock solid for me
I am not familiar with European phones. You could try a differnet kernel for you phone.
Did you Google your problem to see if anyone else has the issue.
Good luck--

OK thx i will try #1 and #2
How can i do real clean instal? . like it was when i bought it
Because when in flash 4.3 stock ROM some stuff like wall wallpaper and the greenify setting stay the same.
If i wipe the data will everything be back like when i first bought the phone?

Not sure on going back to original. Maybe Odin with a stock tar file for your version. Not familiar with that though. I have the wallpaper issue also. Not uncommon. Going of you wipe as suggested and redo internal card, you will be OK. Sometimes files are left there from previous roms and can effect new rom. Calling it a nite.

Would reflashing the stock firmware via odin wipe data?

Im planning to reflash my phone back to stock as a few things are messed up, will be flashing via odin the base firmware is UEND6 and will reflash the same firmware so that I can still root w/o tripping knox, would reflashing via Odin clear user data?
i guess not

I guess just flashing the firmware won't wipe the data.
I flashed stock over a CM install and forgot to wipe data. My stuff was still there but the install was definitely a little bit unstable with background apps crashing. It didn't wipe data, but the phone needed a data wipe afterwards to be usable...

I kinda need to get my data back before wiping, I installed 3 new xposed modules and I am not 100% sure which of the 3 is causing the issue, Im stuck at the Samsung logo.
EDIT:
Im wondering if factory reset would delete camera photos stored on the internal memory, if not I have most of my impt stuff backed up online.

Install TWRP recovery (will trip knox) and make a TWRP backup of the entire phone including data partition. Once inside TWRP recovery you can also mount /data and adb pull whatever data you need from it, including the backup. Not sure what to do if you need to access embedded app data that you can not pull through adb.
When I flashed stock without wiping data my files were still there though.

Still waiting for the download to complete. Samfirmware is only giving me 300kb/s and I dont know where else to get stock firmwares.
To close this issue with a resolved status, I would like to say one thing.
If you flash a leaked firmware - it will wipe your phone.
If you flash a stock firmware - it will NOT wipe your phone.
Factory reset will not wipe your internal SD.
Installing TWRP or anything unofficial will trip your KNOX. If your data is worth losing warranty - go for it
I was with a UEND6 firmware and just gonna flash the same to get my data back and factory reset the phone.
EDIT:
Got my data, everything seems to be perfectly working aside from the task manger, Gonna factory reset the phone and probably reflash with odin to have a clean start, would ticking repartition be necessary for a fresh install ? ( but I remember that required a PIT file )

Wipe and Flash

Hi. I have installed Doctor's S6 Port ROM in my i9500. I'm having some signal issues so I want to go back to stock rom and try signal. Here's the question. Can I full wipe my device with custom recovery (wipe data, dalvik, cache, system, preload) and then flash stock firmware with Odin?
Another Question. The Stock rom file I have is HOA7 and my current bootloader version is I9500XXUHOA7 and the modem is I9500ZCUJOH2 (this modem came with doctor's ROM). I want to download stock rom HOH4. This stock firmware will upgrade bootloader and flash a new modem? Also, what happens if i have a higher bootloader than firmware. Example, if i have HOE3 bootloader and install HOA7 firmware?

Yes that would be the correct procedure. Wiping with the custom recovery and then flashing rom with Odin.
The bootloaders are not that strict. You can switch freely between Lollipop versions.
If you are having signal issues why not just swap between custom roms? Maybe try a few different Lollipop modems.
Make sure you do the advanced wipe in TWRP.
Doing a factory reset will only wipe /data, /cache and /dalvik.
Select andvaced wipe and select the partitions manually.

[Q] Flash to stock with full reset

Sorry to start a thread for something that I think is simple. I want to update my S5 to the newest PF4. I was on a rooted 5.0.1 before. I didn't care about keeping root, etc.
I used SamFirm to download the newest firmware. Then ODIN to flash the newest firmware.
The result was it upgraded my phone to 6.0.1 instead of a clean install. In the old days, I recall having to clean cache, clean Dalvik cache, and maybe some other steps.
I simply want to nuke my phone 100%, and load it with the stock firmware PF4.
If I reboot my phone into recovery I see Wipe Date/Factory Reset and Wipe cache partition. I envision that is what I need to do, but looking for confirmation. Also, does the order matter?

You just need to flash a full factory tar from odin
Where do I get a full factory tar? I used SamFirm, the screencap is below.

You can use Samsung smart switch emergency upgrade and initialization option to fully wipe and upgrade your device.
Or just flash the stock firmware, and then go to recovery and do a factory reset.
