It simply means that you are not connected to the internet through your phone's mobile internet.
No option to remove this symbol as on date.
Cheers!

even I do not have GPRS setup on my XDA2?
Apart from the setup, the network is all around you. So: YES, the Radio detects it and then shows this 'G'. Maybe it even stands for 'Gee look what I found: GPRS availability'
On my MDAI & II this Icon is shown when i connect to a GPRS Network, not when it is found.
The G appears when a GPRS network is detected as being available for connection, regardless of whether you are connected or not.
Patrick, this sounds different for you, maybe your ROM/Carrier has something we don't.
cheers,
Alex.
I also tried my XDA3 and it is the same. When i boot th device and it is logged on to the network i just get the signal strength.
When i then start a connection(over the ConnectionManager or the RasApi, same behavior) the G Icon is shown when connection starts.
Weird, my G always appears just after I switch the phone on when I wake up in the morning. I never connect my GPRS unless I need it - worried about frying my nuts when the xda is in my pocket (you never know, I might need them again one day).
rgds,
Alex.
Hi,
On my device and all our local phone network here. You will only get the "G" icon only if you have subcribe to the service. The general observation is that the icon will stay for about 5 to 10 second after the phone radio is switched on and disappear afterwards. You can also check it by clicking the signal strength icon.
The correct term should be "attached".
By default, your phone will search for GPRS on radio start, and when it finds the one you belong to, it attaches to the GPRS network -- thus the symbol "G".
But this doesn't mean you're connected, only that you're ready. You are only connected to the GPRS when you click Connect ...etc, when a username & password is verified.
So, generally speaking, you'll need to see the "G" before you can go online on GPRS.
basically it just tells you that GPRS is available.... if your connected you'll see the two arrows above the signal icon in the taskbar instead of the antenna shaped one...
If anyone here uses wifi, does your 3g stay connected while wifi is on? I know when wifi is on, the phone will use it for data. I mean up in the notification bar does it show the wifi icon, and the 3g icon for anyone here? Also in settings when you go to about phone then to status, under "Mobile network state" does it still say "connected" when you have 3g on.
The reason why I ask this is because since I've had my Fascinate, when wifi is on, "mobile network state" is disconnected, and I only have the wifi icon in the notification bar at the top. However as of 10 mins ago when I put wifi on, the 3g icon is still on up at the top, and under status "mobile network state" is staying connected.
The WiFi icon should replace the 3G icon.

It normally does, but for today it didn't. Even in settings when wifi was on, it still said my mobile network was connected. I eventually turned wifi off, then back on, and it went back to just being the wifi icon at the top and mobile network disconnected in settings. I'm just wondering if this is some underlying issue i've been having with my signal strength affecting this.
I'm guessing WIFI was on but you weren't connected to any networks. I've had that happen a couple times.

No, I was connected to my house router and 3g was still on. I did a speed test to make sure I was on wifi.
Hi! I have a problem with my new Moto G4 Play XT1602. Stock rom 6.0.1, no root.
I do not have a wifi, only SIM data connection.
APN is properly set, with "dun", and I tried many different SIM without changes.
When I activated the hotspot, other devices see the hotpost but fail to connect the network.
At this point, if I click the double arrow icon (drop-down menu) twice I deactivated and reactivated the data network and tethering starts (devices are properly connected) but It does not work anymore the network data in the cell.
It appears an exclamation mark near the Cellular data icon (the triangle with 4G/H+)
Summing, the devices connected to the hotspot use the data network but the phone itself is "offline", in not possible to use anything related to the network
When I deactivate the hotspot, I have to tap again twice the double arrow icon (drop-down menu) to bring the phone "online".
Is there any solution to simultaneously use the hotspot and the connection on the phone itself?
Thanks for any help!
So my problem is that after i connect in any wifi network, my phone says "no internet" however I really have internet connection (for example i can go to facebook), and after reboot it works normal sometime. Tried factory reset with no any help. So does someone have same problems and if you do, did you fix it?
My phone does this with any wifi network and everytime reboot "fix" it. Also i don't do anything special before this problem appears.
Phone: S7 Edge (G935F)
OS: Android 7 Nougat
so it's just cosmetic?
I guess to determine if you've internet the smartphone is pinging a certain server which seems not to be available in your case.
I only did restart once and while I'm on recognized network, it was fixed permanently. It happened only on first use, you may need to reboot the router

Well i guess it's only cosmetic since i can use browser normally and my whatsapp etc works great. I just don't understand why it works this way.
I have similar issues on my wi-fi. When strength of signal goes under 50% (ca <65 dBm), it starts to lag and very offen lost connection to the internet...pretty disturbing and dissapointing I have to say.

Okay, is it like it's really losing connection or just saying that like in my case (i have the connection, but my phone thinks i don't so it shows that "no internet" notification in wifi settings and in the wifi icon)?
It is really also losing of connection, download stuck or is really sloooow. It is also indicated in status bar in Wi-Fi icon (exclamation mark) and under Network name is "Internet can be unavailable".
When the signal is weak, I can't even finish network test through Ookla app - upload test can't be finished.
Same situation is with other wifi networks...in my work when the signal is at 50% signal, it keeps disconnecting and reconnecting, my other phone has stable connection at the same place where Edge is strugling
Screenshots are attached.
Hi,
I want to ask a nooby question. However I haven't find an answer on the internet.
When I turn on data on my mobile an x appears below the signal icon and stay there for about 5min. What does this x means? Why does it stay there for so long??
Even though the X appears I still have internet connection
usually x means your not using data

It shows data service is not fully established. Dial *#*#4636#*#* to see details on Phone information.
Try this: Settings > Network and Internet > Cellular Network Settings > Preferred Network type... change 4G to 3G... wait until it is connected, then change it again from 3G to 4G. Hope it helps.

What he said.
There are two ways to show you are not connected to internet.
1. x instead of 4/3/2g shows your mobile data is off.
2. x on the right angle of network bars represent that internet connection has not been established with your TSP.
