I started a thread a few months ago concerning a proprietary video player that Sony used for their Location Free Player devices. Well...
The software code has now been moved to open source status and is free for full linux development. I'm hoping I can convince one of you savvy developers to whip up the player so it can run on either Android or a full linux OS (I use Ubuntu). I'm sure it's a gold mine for tons of other video streaming applications that could potentially run on our devices.
The link to the open source code can be found here along with other Sony open projects.
http://products.sel.sony.com/opensource/
Location Free TV is the program I'm specifically talking about. I believe the current version is LFA-PC30. If you would like to read more on this device/player you can check the wiki at:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LocationFree_Player
Let me know if anyone has any questions, I very eager to see if this is possible. If I could stream video from my Location Free Player Base I to either my android device or Ubuntu Netbook I would be very very pleased. If a dev is serious I would be more than happy to have them test on my base station. PM or email me if you're interested!
Also, please move to the correct thread if this is in the incorrect area.
agreed!
I too would love to see more on this, my locationfree box could get so much more use.
So a sony base unit (hardware) is needed to try this right
If someone is working on this, and needs a connection to a base station to test ( I have the last version that came out LF-V30 ) message me and I'll send you the adress to connect to my station and the password
Would
Love to see this on Android. This would give new life to my Location Free Box. If not then I may have to move to Sling Player although I would like to stay with Sony.

Please compile an app from the source code link that OP provided. I am looking forward to it.

Thanks for the interest, i have mailed you the apk file.
Is this meant more as a historical episode guide, or a current episode/TV Guide type of application?
The reason I ask , is I was looking for just such an app last week (The current and upcoming episode type), and found one that works rather well and seems well polished already..
It's called "TV Show Favs" and has the ability to flag shows for your own listing, see upcoming schedules by day, get episode synopsis, guest stars, and you can even look up any show, and look at it's historical episode info.
http://www.appbrain.com/app/tv-show-favs/com.tvshowfavs
Not that having another app isn't fine... but you might want to see if you can differenciate your app vs this one in some fashion.. your screens look very nice already, but as a user I'd ask myself "What can this new app do that my current one cannot'.
Good luck on the development though...
@DroidGnome
This is more like a historical episode guide, but i do plan to implement upcomng schedules and other features as well.
I did come across that after i started developing this and that app is quite nice already.
What i did not like about that however is the need to register and use an online account,
my application was developed with mostly offline mode in mind.
The only time data network is used is to update the stuff.
However to really get a good idea about the app you would have to try it, so i will try to upload a beta version here soon.
Thanks
update
i have added the latest beta version of the application, if anyone is testing out there let me know whats happening thanks.
Added a video for series droid ui preview
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BppnQC3RSDc
slow transition effects is coz video was taken on an emulator not an actual device
If you like it download it on android market just search "Series Droid", if you like it please help me by rating it
thanks
works g8 on my phone
Hey guys,
Found VZW_Skype.apk in an old RUU before it was announced that it would be pulled from the Thunderbolt, when installed it tries to download a file called com.skype.merlin_mecha (Found this from baksmali'ing it) but fails to download as the file was pulled from the market (along with a similar file called merlin_bionic) so without it we have no video calling.
http://pastebin.com/hsuX1WCC
Now this file, when looked up on AndroLib seems to have 5-10k plus installs, if you can help me in finding it (google didn't help much) then we may have a shot at video on the TB using Skype.
Thanks
This would be better off being reposted in several other device forums. I was looking at the comments on Androidzoom and apparently an Evo user has/had it. Try asking there. Hopefully the user has a xda account and still has the apk. Long shot, but a shot worth taking...
Did Fring ever turn back on video chat?
Tango seems to work decently. Called my wife's iPhone 4 from my Tbolt without issue. Skype would be pretty sweet though!
I noticed there were a lot of programs in the older RUUs that are not listed. Good luck on the search as I would love to try it out!
Fring and oovoo both work but the it wold not register the front facing camera.

+1 for Tango. I can call my wife's iPhone with it and it works great. Can use over 3G too and not limited to wifi and 4G.
yahoo messenger works well also. does video chat. video part could be better . what is the quality on tango?
I seem to have audio issues with both Tango & Yahoo video calling. I am calling to my wife's TBolt. Any one know how to correct this ?
Thanks
Tango seems to have an issue with tbolt to tbolt calling. Works great calling tbolt to iPhone though.

Ah yes, tried tango as well, not as good as face time to face time, but i suspect that skype video calling will fix that, its bull**** the iphone has skype video but android doesnt yet.

This was just a dummy app directing you to the app store. Only FW .96 had Skype video but the quality wasn't that good. If you rip the .apk from .96 Skype Video should work.

If someone gets Skype working, I will definitely be donating. I am the only one with a Front Facing camera in the family.
Add me to the donation list..... Maybe we should start a bounty. The first dev to get skype video calls working with decent quality would get the bounty.

I don't like bounties, If I find the apk ill post it for free
I knew the captn would make it happen....cant wait for some video calls on this beast. The ffc is a little shoddy in low light but great during the day

I know they're a lot of people wondering like myself.. What do you guys think is the best video chat app currently out that works best for our phones... I use to love Tango but it stopped working for me and my Wife's Epic.. of course its been a few months since I used it.. But which do you think is the best? I figured I would ask before throwing another 10 apps on my phone for testing. Also what roms are you running with it?
Thanks

Let me break it down:
Here is a list of the video call apps that I know to be available. If i'm missing one, let me know. I'd love to try it out:
Tango (Android/iPoop) - I'm going to assume this is the most popular. Video quality seems to be pretty good. I do have some occasional feedback issues with audio, but that comes and goes. The latest version of Tango FC'd everytime I opened it, but luckily for me, I had the version right before the update backed up, so I'm still in business.
Fring (Android/iPoop) - This was the first app I used for video calls. It did the job. I haven't used it in a while, and I know they've improved on it. I switched to Tango because everyone I knew was using it.
Qik (Android/iPoop) - I've never used Qik. At first it didn't support iPoop, and that was the only people I had to talk to via video call. Friends i've spoken with that use it don't seem to prefer it over any of the other solutions, so I haven't really had the urge to try it myself.
Yahoo Messenger (Android/iPoop/PC) - I've had mixed results with Yahoo. It seems to work pretty well for the most part, and is useful when chatting phone to PC as it's simple and alot of people already have a yahoo ID. The only issue I had with it was the video was always tilted sideways no matter which way I held my phone...
Google Talk (Android/PC) - I went down this road when I tried the leaked Gingerbread ROM. I had high hopes, but this was pretty much unuseable for me. I was able to connect, but video was too choppy at best. I'm positive this will improve in the future, but as of today, I don't recommend it.
ooVoo (Android/iPoop/PC) - This is an interesting app. It allows conference calling, so you can actually carry on video calls simultaneously with more than one user. I used this shortly and tested it for a phone to PC call and it seemed to be pretty decent. I'd have to give it a little more time and testing, but my first impression was that it did the job pretty well.
Skype (Android/iPoop/PC) - I know this one is new. I think there's a thread if you want to try to get this to work on your phone. Haven't tried it... can't really speak on it. I would check out the thread if you're interested. I'm sure there's feedback there.
As with everything on this community, YMMV. And keep in mind, all of my opinions are based on using the app with a wi-fi connection, so if you're going with 3g or 4g, you'll just have to test what's out there and see what gives you the best quality call. I hope this helps at least a little bit.
If nothing else, it'll at least give you some options to try.
I just used a modded skype for froyo over 4g and it worked beautifully except for the fact that I was sideways on my friends comp.
It was mad clear! He also said I was laggy a bit but I blame that on the 4g. I haven't tried wifi.
You can try it. When you go to the thread about skype 2.0 in the themes and app section, click the link that talks about the sgs2 or w/e and then there will be another link where the author says "TRY THIS ONE FOR FROYO"
That's the one ^_^

Well, Skype owns QIK so hopefully there will be some crossover pretty soon. Trouble is, even if it's the best program in the world it doesn't matter if your friends aren't using it. Skype is the one everyone else in the PC world seems to use, so now that it'll work on android, that's the one for me.

Hola
I love my my anime. I am, have been, on Lineage OS (v7.1.1) and the crunchyroll app does not playback any anime video. It simply shows a black screen.
Can someone who is still on the Nougat stock firmware please test if the crunchyroll app works to playback actual video. You do not have to be a subscribed user to check it out.
Crunchyroll support is saying that they built the Android app to work with stock firmware only. I believe that this is baloney because I was using the same app when Unjustified Dev gave us CyanogenMod 13.
I think the issue is related to any v7.1.1 ROM. Or if anyone has any suggestions on root cause I am willing to listen.
Thanks.
"So what you want me to do 'bout that?"
I have the same issue and I have been trying to figure out what is going on. I think you are right about it being 7.1.1 that only works. I have a OnePlus 3T and the only rom I have tried to use that works with it Freedom OS which is base don 7.0.0.
It is super annoying because I was previously using a ResurrectionRemix rom which was perfect for me, except Crunchyroll doesn't work and I always relax in bed at night watching some anime. Trying desperately to find a solution to this.
Good question on that one. Running the experimental official build and it's not working.
Works on stock firmware
Hola
Sigh, I don't know what now to do. There is an active thread about this issue in the crunchyroll forums, but no one from crunchyroll as provided any feedback from what I see. Direct support is useless.
I will try to get them to answer via twitter or other social networking sites. I see that Funimation is working without issue on v7.1.1.
Same problem here LG G5 Resurrection Remix. Crunchy wont play on phone
Same thing here on LineageOS (7.1.1) on my Moto Z. Could someone send me the link to the discussion on the CR forums? Can't find it
Has anyone here or in another forum tried to get a logcat to see if there's any errors or anything else that's useful?

Hola
I had opened a support ticket with Crunchyroll and they acknowledged that the issue exists and were actively working on a fix. There a number of forum threads on the issue on the Crunchyroll forums - Android section. Support could only say that a new update of their app will happen when the had a working fix, but until then, unless you are in the US, no feasible workaround exists. If you are in the US or willing to make use of a US proxy, you can sign up to their VRV.co sister site, add Crunchyroll as an existing premium link and use the VRV android app to browse and view their content.
The VRV.co workaround obviously requires a premium account and US IP to work. I have tested it and the experience was not as fluid as the native Crunchyroll app. Plus browsing through the shows doesn't seem to expose all of Crunchyroll's anime content.
"So what you want me to do 'bout that?"
