any chance of a dev edition? I have a note 4 that I can't do anything with cos it's locked (didn't know I had to bu the dev edition directly from Samsung)
And hopefully they don't take forever to launch this time (looking at their note 4 launch)

So my Note 2 fell out of my pocket this AM on the golf course and I'm unable to track it down using GPS, alarms, etc. Pretty much it's gone and I'm pretty sure someone has picked it up and pocketed it or it got ran over by the lawnmowers. That said, rather than get a locked down insurance replacement, I figured I'd go ahead and upgrade to the Note 3. As I have unlimited data, I'll be paying full retail on my device. So all that said, a couple of questions:
1) is there any reason not to get the dev edition instead of the standard retail edition? Do most ROMs support both?
2) Are these phones unlocked internationally (both dev and retail) for both data and voice?
3) Has the carrier check on the wifi hotspot been disabled on custom roms?
4) Anything else I should be aware of for dev ed vs regular?
I don't have a Dev edition but from what I've gathered across the forums, the Dev edition is compatible with most custom roms so long as the correct firmware is present.
Dev edition would be the only unlocked phone as it is bought directly from Samsung. As long as you are rooted the hotspot issue can be solved, however I've noticed that most developers include the hotspot fix.
Since you will be paying full price for your new phone, if you are big on custom roms and such I would say Dev edition is the way to go because of the freedom you get (including CyanogenMod).
It's too bad you lost your phone now as the note 4 will likely follow suit with previous releases and be available this fall. Not to mention the rumored fall release of the new flagship Samsung F series.

Yeah tell me about it. I loved my Note 2 and was planning to wait for the 4. Oh well, maybe I;ll sell the N3 when the time comes and upgrade again.
Good thinking. I've been waiting for official release announcements for the fall lineup of phones before I decide what I will upgrade to.
Why is it that the S5 is getting the rollout to Lollipop now for Verizon and the Note 3 isn't getting it yet? Verizon started the OTA for the S5 today. This is a bunch of crap.
I am not happy. If I can't root my Note 3 on 4.4.4 at least let me have Lollipop

I believe they normally move from newest to oldest. S5 being the newest. Note 3 should be next hopefully. Or Note 4 then note 3 if the Note 4 did not get it yet.
My buddy has the note 4 and hasn't received it yet. I would assume it would be next in line. Hopefully if verizon drags its ass someone will find exploits and port touch wiz lollipop over to us. As much as I hate touch wiz I do rely a lot on some of the apps CM doesn't give me like s notes.

s5 does not have a replacement on the shelves yet note 3 has the note 4 replacing it. Note 3 are on the verge of not being carried at verizon stores anymore. So any work done to improve or update the note 3 is non profitable. It does not take a lot to realize big red only cares about 1 thing the black numbers being big and red numbers being small note 3 represents red numbers.
This very situation is why i feel carriers need to be stripped of the ability to mess with phones bad enough manufactures paste junk all over the phone.

I said the exact same thing soon as we found out the 4.4.4 wasn't rootable. It sucks but the newer phones always get the upgrades first. I got kinda excited once I saw the Note 3 Lollipop video but once they clamped down on the Note 3 and 4 with Verizon I'm done. It appears the Nexus 6 rumors are true and that's what I'm holding out for. It's lacking some things I'll truly miss like removable battery and sd card but for me I've been modding phones since the Audiovox 6700 and I love flashing roms too much to stop. Sorry as I know it's taboo to talk about other phones in this forum.
I too like to be able to mod my phone the way I see fit. If this is how it is going to be with Verizon I too will be jumping ship from Samsung to the Nexus 6. I have a funny feeling that Verizon will try to lock it down as well, so if I decide to go that way I will try to get my Nexus from the play store so I know it will be unlocked and I can do what I want with it.
The Note 3 will see lollipop way down the line.
This is the thing I don't understand about people who are on Verizon. I bought the Note 3 knowing the bootloader was locked down and that rooting and romming was going to be very limited, if at all. This was commen sense. Also Verizon had been locking down phones for how many years now? These complaints just seem maddening or they're coming from people who didn't nt understand what they were getting into.

I had no problem with the boot loader, I was happy using Safestrap. At least I could do some customizing that way.
I heard Samsung was upset with carriers that they take so long to push updates they already have. it hurts them in the long run verizon doesn't care what phone you have. So it goes Google Samsung then carrier or Verizon rather. So they take a long time. Only phone I belive to get fastest updates are Google like nexus. I believe they push it directly to those phones themselves.

Well, it's coming up on that time to think about our next phone. It seems that Samsung and Verizon is hell bent to keep us from flashing our phones. I've been looking around here and it seems that most of the developers have gone to Nexus and LG devices. From what I've seen so far I might go to the LG G4+ I recently heard rumor about.
What phones do you think is going to be popular among developers?
For sure, it isn't going to be the note 5, we all know why. The note 4 will still be with developers I'm guessing. The lg g4+ (lg g4 pro) is probably being announced at Berlin IFA and will be supported, look at the lg g4 devs.
The new nexus device will obviously be a powerhouse for a lot of people looking for an unlocked bootloader and stock vanilla android .
Anyways more devices might have support like the moto x series and sony's Xperia lines are good devices too compared to Samsung's insane pricing on their devices.
Definitely the new Nexus devices will be on the top of that list. I'm also looking @, for my use come Feb '16, a GSM G4 as well as the M9.
I'm interested in seeing what others have to say. This is what I want - removable battery, SD card slot, IR blaster, easy root and unlocked bootloader.
This is what I need - all of the above (or, if not a replaceable battery, then a battery case that allows on the fly recharging...)
I'm looking forward to Christmas and seeing what comes of it - that's the season (well, just prior to it) for all the new goodies...
What are others looking @?
I know I'm done with Samsung (iron fisted, whore mongers... No offense!) - they and Verizon have made it apparent who they believe owns my phone. Top it off with the lobotomized phones they now offer and they've gone from "smart" phone to "not-so-smart" phone...
I'm happy with my Note3 on Jasmine, but I don't see it getting an upgrade to Marshmallow. The note 5 is out of the question, I'd like a Note4(but the Verizon retail version doesn't appear to be rootable). I've got time, the Nexus on the Verizon site seems to be a bit light in the hardware side, the LG looks nice. Of course, there's always leaving Verizon, if I can convince the wife.
I just made the jump to TMO. I was afraid they'd not have the network I need here in Georgia, but they're comparable thus far to Big Red, with a greatly reduced cost structure and a heap more data for the $$$.
I was able to set my Note 3 (CDMA) up to work on TMO's GSM network and have awesome data speeds. It's a game changer - if I don't like them, I can move to AT&T and, when the time comes, root whatever I buy outright without the runaround that Verizon offers.
I thought about the Note 4 on TMO - it's an easy root but it's just not that much of an upgrade over the 3 and certainly not a $500+ upgrade. So, I'll stay put with the N3 and move to something else when this old daily driver don't drive no more... (That'll likely be Android "Zebra cake....")
No word yet on 5.1.1 and extremely limited ROM support from what I can see....
Is this the forgotten model from Samsung?
(I remember when 5.01 came out it seemed to take FOREVER for the 910G to get it also?)
Seriously I have been with Sammy since the original Galaxy S and for a not even one year old flagship, this is terrible treatment.
They have forgotten Galaxy Note 4 itself, no point in thinking about 910G alone.
Here in India, Samsung is running TV commercials for the Note 5. I think that explains the delay. Samsung will do its best to sell the new model, including holding back updates for the earlier one. Samsung's phone sales have tanked and these are desperate times!
We will see an update (minus any new fefeatures from Note 5) once the mgmt decides the first wave of Note 5 buyers have been dealt with.
Bro, us SM-910U users are equally ignored. When 5.0 update came we were last. My family called a doctor to snap me out of a depression.
I tell you what the doctor prescribed me: Nexus phone.
Waiting on the new Nexus 5 & 6 for my treatment of Samsungitus which affects millions of people.
Luckily N910H is nearly the same as N910C, just some differences in modem. The fact is that N910H can use all N910C rom but it's a dream with N910U
Hey guys,
I'm gonna search but I figured I ask in the meantime... is there a possibility of 6.0.1 coming to tab 4 that's on AT&T? I'm primarily interested in doze for tian device so I can get longer standby times...
Thanks!

Not going to happen. Samsung only develops for devices for a two year window, which the tab 4 is no longer in. Plus this device is a low priority for Samsung; there are some tab 4 variants which still haven't even received a lollipop update. Finally, the AT&T devices have locked bootloaders, so there's no ROM development now and likely never will be. So in short, there's virtually no chance of your device getting marshmallow. Sorry

Did the tab 4 come out the same year as the note 4? If so, shouldn't the tab 4 also be getting marshmellow? I think samsung's reasoning behind it may be because it is too slow

It came out in May of 2014. The real reason is it's not enough of a flagship device (i.e. not a big seller) for Samsung to care about. We can talk ourselves around in circles, but at the end of the day, this device is not going to see Marshmallow (other than Cyanogenmod 13, which is impossible for the AT&T and Verizon variants due to the locked bootloader nightmare)
