[Q] 'While Locked' notification issue (lollipop) - Galaxy Note 3 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello,
I recently updated my Note 3 (SM-N9005) to Lollipop with a stock Samsung 5.0 ROM using Odin, and I am struggling with the 'While Locked' notifications.
Basically, despite what option I set, text messages are never shown on the screen or in the S-View display. All it ever says is 'Message Received' and 'Contents hidden'.
I have swapped between 'Hide Sensitive' and 'Show All' just in case something wasn't setting properly, to no avail. I have checked the 'Application Notifications' list and Messages has all options turned off. I have also tried this with Priority set to ON.
It's a shame I can't get this to work for whatever reason, as displaying messages in S-View now appears to be supported without the use of Xposed. It would also be nice to be able to glance at my messages without having to unlock
I'd appreciate any ideas. I tried a Google search, but nothing much came back apart from changing the standard settings in 'Sound & Notifications'.

SMS displayed EVEN in locked mode...

I have discovered a big flaw today in my samsung tablet, running JM2 Froyo 2.2!
I received a SMS, my device was LOCKED (for privacy). But when the SMS arrived the device turned on, and, even if still LOCKED, it showed the content of SMS...this is not acceptable to me.
Is there a workaround? An additional settings?
I use the default Messanging.
2.
If of any help, I can unistall the default tool (messaging) and install Handcent SMS, but will this fix my issue? Again, I wish that NO SMS appear on display if in LOCKED mode (password protected mode)
Thanks
Saulo
If any of you can suggest a SMS application which fix this issue, I will appreciate to hear!
have a good time

There is an option in the setting for notification (Messaging -> Menu -> Setting). Have you try that option?

Dear Heru
I am checking...
I have only 3 settings enabled (NOT greyed):
1. delete old messages
2. auto-retrieve
3. Notifications (display message notification in status bar)
This 3rd one is NOT the culprit, since what it does is to display an icon in the top bar.
I have disabled it, but still I receive SMS full text (clearly visible by everyone) even in "locked passport-protected" mode.
Any more suggestions?
Thanks for your help!

If you install Handcent (maybe ChompSMS or others do it too), you can disable the popups altogether (locked or not). Both are free on the Market. Handcent also lets you set a security pattern to open texts (again regardless of whether the phone is locked) that also applies when you try to get to them via the stock Messaging app.
I have no idea for Chomp, but for Handcent, the setting is under Settings -> Notification Settings. There you can clear the checkbox if you never want the popups (only notification bar will be set off), and if you leave it enabled you have a subscreen for settings that will let you say whether you want it to turn on the screen, dim it, enable privacy mode (means you need to do the unlock pattern before any message details are shown in notifications), and a bunch of other customizations, including the "Show When Locked" which you can clear meaning that if you have any popups after all the other settings, it will remain "hidden" until you unlock the phone.
There have been aggravating issues in the past with sending MMS image files, but lately, I've had none, and am pleased overall with Hancent which is a pretty big upgrade over the default app.
Good luck.
Thanks a lot dear Buglessfan!
I will definetely use handcent SMS
Questions:
1. Do I need to unistall the stock messaging application?
2.if so, do you recommend to me use Titanium Backup Pro (which I have)?
It has a funzion called freeze, which i think is something like unistall but with the option of reversing it
Thanks and waiting
Saulo
I *think* it still needs the stock app to exist in the background, but they have a web site with their own forums and support, so I'm sure you can find out there. IIRC it's bbs.handcent.com or the like. If you have Titanium backup you could freeze it to try, or just uninstall it (after backing it up first). The cool thing is if you have both installed it still provides whatever added security you enable, the stock app isn't a back door.
I have used Handcent exclusively for quite awhile. You cannot uninstall the native messaging ap. (or at least you dont need to).
You can create a security lock specifically for Handcent and apply it to both Handcent and the native ap.
Then cancel the retrieval and notifications for the native ap. and all you will get are the Handcent notifications. If the tab is locked, you will get the notification sound, and the icon in the task bar and nothing else. Then unlock the device, and then unlock Handcent and read the message.
In my opinion, its a very secure way to receive SMS.
Thanks to both of you.
Dear Carlsbad: I have followed your instructions and now hadcent behaves exactly as I wished: no pop-ups are shown when a new SMS arrives.
I wonder if I can also disable the sound (triggered when a SMS arrives): the setting for disabling sound are in handcent? Or in the phone provider settings?
Thanks a lot!
Saulo
By the way: are you in Carlsbad in Orange County (close to San Diego)? I was there in 2007...very wonderful location!
If you just disable all notification in the stock messenging app, then, yes only the settings for Handcent matter, and the settings there are pretty rich, including custom sound, no sound, no vibration, particular vibration patterns, no led, custom LED color, et cetera.

NO Email/Text notifications

Hello everyone,
Just made the switch from iphone to Android after having iphones for the last 5 years. After 4 days of familiarizing myself with s4 I love it more and more.
I've disabled many programs to speed up the phone and now I have 2 problems.
1. My phone does not automatically receive emails and does not send me notifications to the bar. I checked the email settings and it says send notifications all my email addresses. I assume I disabled some app that controls notifications.
2. Text messages- when I receive a text message. In the notification bar it just says Text Message. My wife has S3 and hers shows the actual text message in the notification bar.
3 I don't receive notifications about app updates that are available. I believe when I first got the phone, it sent me a notification to the bar stating I have updates to do.
I think I disabled one or more processes that control all those features. I looked through them many times and cant figure out which one it could be.
Thank you,
Max
My advice, I would do a factory reset, that way you go back to stock that puts the rom back to factory settings, and start your procedure again. It would a heck of alot easier to do this as it can down right frustration trying this and that.
Those features you are talking about are enabled by default. Lets start there, if you see it didn't help, we will try something else.
good luck
Go into the message app settings, and make sure the settings are as you want them, if you want to try that first.

SMS Content on Lock Screen

I used to be able to see who SMS Texts were actually from on the lock screen with my S6. Now that I have the S8, it only shows that I have an SMS message and it won't show me who it's from unless I actually go into the Messages App? How do I make the sender visible on the lock screen?

Go to settings -> Lock screen and security -> Notifications -> make sure it's on , then go into that menu and make sure you do not have Hide content or notification icons only turned on - also make sure the toggle for all apps is turned on too
Also you have to be using the crappy stock Samsung Messages app, otherwise you won't get that little bubble notification or the edge screen light up. Was very annoyed to see both of those things disabled from working if you use Android Messages or any other app.

I went to Settings > Lock screen and security > Notifications (which is turned on) and then into that menu. In that menu I have the "Hide Content" toggle turned off - the "Notification icons only - Hide notification details and show only the icon" toggle turned off. The toggle for "All Apps" is On. But when I get a SMS message, it only shows "Messages" on the lock screen... not who it's actually from like it used to do with my Galaxy S6. What am I doing wrong?

Now try, notifications, scroll to messages, go in to that app and see show content is ticked.

Not anymore - Textra jsut updated last night and it has the option for Android heads up notification (ie Edge lighting) so you can choose which style.
Jsut tested and it works perfectly

Ever figure this out? I can't. I have done all of the above and gone into the message app and allowed for content to be displayed and gone into the always on display and allowed for content to be displayed. I am using the native message app. I still just get a message icon on my lock screen. No content. Super frustrating!

I has the same issue. I had googled a million times. Finally had a bright idea.... Go to setting > about phone > down at the bottom should say reset > reset all settings.
This doesn't erase your phone, only sets it back to default stiff like background, notifications, ringtones etc. BUT it finally shows the messages!
Any other suggestions on this? I've tried everything in this thread, including resetting my settings to default. Driving me nuts. After being on the pixel for the past 7 months until now, I've gotten very used to being able to see previews on the lock screen and replying from the lock screen too. I have all the appropriate settings checked that should be allowing me to see previews, but it doesn't. All I want is for the screen to briefly wake up when a text comes through, and to be able to preview it. Is this supposed to be possible on the S8?

SAME ISSUES HERE -- samsung s8/t-mobile
it seems as though the "show content" option for notifications has disappeared on the Samsung S8... I've tried everything i can think of and searched several boards and come up unsuccessful... the only options for notifications on a lock screen (at least for me - Samsung S8 on t-mobile) are: :hide content" or "do not show notifications".. both of which are not helpful when attempting to view the sender's name while hiding their actual text... HELP!
It works on textra under settings then customise notifications then at the bottom u will see privacy settings in there u can have it to show contact but hide message. Hope that's what you wanted. Cheers.

The only way I found to get to the lock screen and view/reply to text message is to double tap the home button first.
It's anoying additional step, but I'm trying to get used to it.

I am not sure if you have found a fix for this or not but.... Last week I accidentally factory reset my phone and lost everything. I still had my old phone and was able to transfer all that was there back over, but my screen stopped lighting up with new notifications. After spending the last hour trying to fix it I was successful!
Settings > Apps> Messages > gear icon above Force Stop > About Messages > update
I really hope this helps others.

Messages preview not working after Oreo upgrade

I have the S8 Plus and just upgraded to Oreo yesterday. I use the Messages app (white text bubble icon with blue background). I notice that the notification badge (the orange counter) no longer shows up on my shortcut when I have a new message. Also, the preview of the text message that used to appear at the top of my screen no longer works. Is there a setting I need to adjust, or is this just my new reality with Oreo?
Thank for any help!!
Hi
Go into settings and search for "app icon badges" this should help
Trev
I'm also having the problem of no badges showing up on any of my apps since the oreo update. All the notifications are set up to show badges, yet still nothing. I'm still also not getting edge lighting notifications when the screen is turned off.
Have you checked under Settings->apps the notificationsettings of the apps you want to notify?
App badge icon
Same issue here. I have made sure the app badge is turned on in notifications, it still doesn't work.

How to remove new pop up with S8 pie?

I have an S8 (tmobile) which I recently updated to the leaked firmware of DRL6 for Android Pie on S8. There are no problems, but there is a popup that comes up everytime a message comes with Samsung messages that really annoys. Here's an image in attachments.
Anything possible to remove? I tried testing every possible case for notification settings; nothing worked. Thanks!
disable floating messages, settings > advanced features, you'll see "floating messages" option there
