Hello, normally I find most of my information by reading old threads I find on Google. However this one I am having trouble with because of out dated Roms.
I have installed my Nexus 7 in my pickup above my stock stereo. I currently have it set up off of a constant charge until I get things working enough to do a more permanent installation with a switched ignition source. Overall I am liking the tablet on my dash and everything that I am able to do with it. However my 2012 nexus 7 has a rather small internal memory and I would really like to be able to add an external flash drive for music and movies.
What is a good rom to use that allows for OTG Charging? Most of my searches turn up what appears to be a great rom called Timur's Kernel, however this does not appear to be available anymore. Are there any roms that I can use that are still supported? Currently running 5.0 Lollipop.
Not sure about supported Roms but I am using autodroid with an otg y cable that provides a USB port. I have been using my setup for 6 months with no issues.
Timurs 2012 rom is probably what you want. It's hard to find, but It's still floating around >> http://www.share-online.biz/dl/VJYKVPFNZV
Timurs kernel is not compatible with 5.0
If you use Multi-Rom you can install Autodroid as a secondary rom and still retain you 5.0 install.
My Dash installed Nexus 7 is now suffering from extremely poor performance.
I have to wait like 5 seconds to half minute for a click response.
I am quite sure it is a NAND I/O issue but it was not like that on the first day.
My Nexus is only for navigation and music so the NAND is almost empty (10GB + left on 16GB model)
However, I like streaming online music and this cause the death.
Seems to me that the streaming music keep filling the NAND free space without telling the NAND controller to trim.
What's more important, the only 2 ROMs that support OTG + Charge do not support Trim or fstrim command.
I am out of solution now. :crying:
I ended up getting an old copy of Timurs Kernel with USB Rom. I have my 2012 N7 mounted externally, directly above my stereo in my F350. I have it wired into the stereo power wire so it comes on and off like the radio does. It has been working awesome with my 64gb flash drive with OTG charging. I dont have any complaints at the moment, at least not related to the rom.
I am still trying to find a good offline navigation app that I like.

Ok, so I've been trawling the threads for hours and the time has come to make my first post on this..
Here's what I really want to do, and whether or not, as I understand, I can do it:
Nexus 7 in dash, 3G model - fine, been done loads of times
250GB USB HDD, connected via USB OTG, containing my music library - possibly, depends on my hard drive? Will it work if I can provide a secondary source of power to the HDD (my caddy allows this)
Charge the N7 at the same time - again possibly, with CM10 and kernel mod? Also new to Android so shooting in the dark a bit here.
OPTIONAL/BACKUP IDEAS:
Wi-Fi drive of some sort - If it works then maybe, seems like an extreme option though for a car install.
Google Music and stream my entire collection (I have 15GB monthly data sim that I can use in the N7) - will work but not ideal for me. I have a lot of lossless music which I won't be able to take advantage of this way. Which brings me on to...
USB DAC through OTG cable - possible I know, but to do this on top of the other stuff is gonna be difficult and unreliable? Can live with just the headphone jack output for the time being, unless:
Utilise the pogo pins for a line out and charging - would be a nice solution in the car but again, possible?
It would be fantastic if someone could tie this all together simply for me somehow, or if anyone has any far better ideas for what I'm trying to do :good:

I would love to use USB Audio on the Nexus 10 such that I can use it when it is playing music from google play music, or locally through the stock music player, NOT through USB Audio Recorder Pro.
I have a Nexus 10 and a Verizon Note 2, both stock unrooted, and it's frustrating because the only way I can enjoy USB Audio on those is with USB Audio Recorder Pro.
Since my Verizon Note 2 is from work, that leaves my Nexus 10 which I could root, unlock, and load a recovery and a ROM (well I have a touchpad with 4.2.2 rom, but I can't even get the device to recognize that a USB audio device is plugged in, but I really want this on my Nexus 10). Is there a ROM right now (or a kernel that I use with the stock ROM) that has full support of USB Audio so any DAC I plug in via USB (With USB OTG cable, of course) will work for any audio coming from the Nexus 10, not just using that USB Audio Recorder Pro app?

I remember this coming up all the time on the Galaxy nexus as well. A couple kernels added full support on their end for all the modules required to use a USB DAC, however the ROM side of things also needs to have special parts included to make it work and I dont think anyone really figured out how to do that or every ROM dev simply didnt want to. So most likely you will always be stuck using whatever app you use to make it work.
Hey guys! A soon to be newcomer to the Android world! I plan to buy a Nexus 7 Gen 2 LTE to install in my dash (I have a Cruze), right now, my car can control my iPhone through the radio (I can browse, play, etc...) and it'll also display my song title, artist, etc... I can also do this with Flash Drives and I want it available through the Nexus 7, I've read many post and all the information is scattered and I need a concrete answer before I buy the Nexus 7 and what I need, as far as I can tell is:
1) Nexus 7 (derp)
2) USB OTG Cable
3) USB Y Cable (usb port is 0.5 amps and wont charge, plan to use a 2 amp charger and the other output for the music)
I need to know which Kernel and OS to use (please use full names ) and if you could recommend me a good audio player, please do.
I also want to make a custom GUI to mimic an OEM headunit, with a Chevy bowtie background and buttons for NAV, Music, Browser, etc...
Also, I've made custom GUI's for Blackberries, I can't remember the name of the tool you used to create them, but it was really easy to use, is there a program like that one?

I know there have been threads in the past about the Nexus 4 not being able to support outputting audio over USB, but now that stock Android 5.0 supports it, can the Nexus 4 do it?
I'm using the factory 5.0 images and I have an external DAC/amp that I want to use (Fiio e18) that's made for Android, but nothing seems to happen when I hook it up. I've read posts that the Nexus 4 physically can't output power over it's USB, which is fine because the DAC has it's own battery source... but can it at least output the audio?
I started with the stock kernel, but also tried the latest Franco kernel (r214) with no luck. Also, I verified the DAC itself works by using it with my laptop. I'm hoping there's just some hidden setting or patch I need to apply to get it to work... Has anyone else tried this yet?

i can not help you with your problem but it is something that interest me too. i only can suggest to use a more feature enabled kernel like unleashed or hells core

That's a good idea... unfortunately no dice with the latest unleashed kernel either (98u). It claims it supports USB OTG, so I was hoping that would be enough, but maybe there's more that needs to be done.

one thing that you might not know. nexus 4 does support usb otg BUT cannot provide electricity via usb. you must use a y cable and provide external power so you it might not be possible to use your DAC!
Thanks, I did know that, but I figured that since my DAC is self-powered (it has its own battery) that I wouldn't need to do the y-cable trick.
Worth a try though, I'm going to order one and see if I can at least get regular USB OTG to work. Maybe once that's working it'll be easier to troubleshoot the audio.
Just wanted to update, I got the Y OTG cable so I could have external power at the same time... but still doesn't work. This is with stock 5.0.1 and unleashed 98u kernel. I went into Synapse and enabled the OTG setting as well. DAC doesn't get recognized, and I tried a few free apps that are supposed to do OTG checks, but they all came back that nothing is attached.
Usb otg is one thing and uab audio out is another. USB otg means that you can connect an USB stick or external hdd to your phone ( with or without external power) USB AUDIO OUT need special circuits from your internal Dac to the USB. If those are not implemented you will never have USB audio out. This is something witch depends on the manufacturer ( S4 mini with snapdragon 400 don't work with USB otg or USB audio out, htc mini 2 M8 works perfectly with fiio E18 as a audio surce for external DAC). So if you really need USB audio out please next time do your homework and read before buying a phone. P.S. Htc mini 2 M8 has the best audio ever and really you don't need an external dac. If you need more power just use your fiio as an amplifier with your phone.
Maybe you could find for your phone a apecial kernel modified for better audio experience. Flash that and use your headphones.

Thanks, yeah I don't need usb audio out... I've had the phone for over 2 years and I still really like it, so no plans on getting a new one just for this.
I believe it's physically possible to do audio out on the N4... I've seen random posts about people getting it to work, but they've all been on custom ROM's based on 4.4.x stuff. I'd really rather not try to reproduce that since 5.0 is running so much better on my phone, and I was just hoping with the new native Android support it might work out of the box. But alas, it looks like google locked down 5.0 on the N4 - even USB OTG storage doesn't work unless you put a custom kernel like unleashed on.
In the meantime, I've just been using it as a headphone amp like you suggest and it's a big improvement.
I had lost my N7 2013 about 5 years back when I moved to a new place. I randomly found it yesterday, and of course I jumped on here and flashed it with the latest LineageOS (18.1). These forums are awesome and covered all issues etc and process was smooth. So the tablet is alive again .
The tablet is 16 GB, so not a whole lot of place by todays standard. So its not going to be my primary driver for my daily activities as I have another tablet for this, so I was wondering how people are using the N7 today? So thought it would be nice to check on here to see if there are any alternative interesting usecases !

I have nexus 7 LTE 32GB with the common hardware problem of digitizer randomly not working and screen rotation issues. I'm trying to reset it because it became too laggy... Once it was the faster device I had so lets see if my attemp to restore it will succeed....

I have an old CD only stereo which had RCA input too, right now I am using it as a player with a 3.5mm to RCA adapter, it is working very well
It could be useful for running simple automated scripts if you are confortable with termux. It also has 5 Ghz wifi connection, so I guess it is not even that bad for downloading stuff.
I bought one used to use as a motorcycle GPS and Bluetooth music player. I adapted it to a phone holder that also serves as a wireless charger.
Pros: Bright, large screen, connects to BT helmet right away. My bike had an expensive OEM GPS optional unit that was only 5".
Cons- GPS totally unreliable. Difficulty acquiring and holding signal where other devices pick up right away. Apparently this was a common problem with them.
I'm going to try two things-
1. Lenonvo M7 Gen 3 7" tablet (no wireless charging), or
2. NC-105 external GPS receiver, connects via USB port.
The Nexus would be perfect for my needs if the GPS were reliable. The wireless charging has worked well on it while in the holder I modified. If I can get the USB GPS receiver to work with the Nexus, I'll likely return the Lenovo, although my mount has a USB charging option also.
For a few years it is now a "video tablet", on it there is Netflix, Disney+, Plex, Vimeo, MX Player, the local TVIP apps and others providers, etc and it is used to watch videos on it directly or broadcast to the TV on the wall (dumb TV with a chromecast).
Sometimes I fight with it because touchscreen or rotation is not working, as it does for almost 10 years now, I can now pry open it easily and reset cable in less than 1 minute

Just curious, do you have Netflix playing in HD using Lineage OS? If so, how'd you do it? I resorted to installing version 6.26.1 of Netflix to get what looks like 720p.
