[Q] UH OH. I broke system ringtones? - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I root my S5. And I followed a guide to add ringtones and remove ones I never would use. I can select the ones I added but they won't play. Unless the app has a separate sound selection
Uhhhh what now

[Q] Changing sounds for dialer and keyboard?

I was browsing xda and came across a thread over in the captivate forum for changing the sounds for the dialer, [HOW-TO] Custom Dial-Tone Sounds.
Long story short I got the sounds where they should be, however they do not work when dialing a number. I still get the default tones. So my question is how the heck to I change those sounds? I have backed up the orginal key0-9.ogg files, deleted the orginals and dropped in the replacements, verifying they match in name. They play what they should in the music player but not when dialing a number.
Some back ground on me and my phone: I am rooted and running stock kernel, I am deodexed as well. I have themed my phone with bits and pieces found through out xda (made my own metamorph and will be converting it to a flash-able version soon).
I pulled all the apks (phone, contacts, dailertabactivity, etc. decompiled them and poured over the xml files inside to see what I could find that may control the sounds and found nothing. I am not a programmer by any stretch of the imagination, so I could have overlooked something or not even be looking in the right place. I haven't looked at the smali files on because 1. I am not sure how to open them and 2. after seeing several examples through xda I am not sure I would even understand what I was seeing.
Has anyone successfully changing those sounds or any other system sound for that matter? any devs out there know the answer?
oh and yes I have googled and and searched and searched with nothing to answer this question. Love that google link Thanks in advance for any insight and help you can offer.

[How to] Leveraging your external Sdcard for apps, Fullscreen/Pie on stock, and fake

This is for P311x, but may work on other devices
Well, this is a how-to topic for some questions that I see asked periodically. These steps are how I achieve my desired results, feel free to call me out on insignificant steps, post alternatives, or tell me if I'm wrong.
These are the steps I take, and are for the P311X they may work on P3100, but I'm not sure. This is merely meant to be informational, and as I haven't made any of these apps, or scripts, I'm not sure as to long-term effects. Furthermore, I am trying to be is as accurate as possible, but I am not responsible for damage to your device, try these at your own risk.. With that out the way. I hope this helps..
OK, How to use your SD-card for apps:
There a number of ways, depending on what Rom/Firmware you are on.
Pre-4.2x (IE. 4.1.x)
Personally I use the SD-card swap script. It works well on the P331x.
It is found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1961097
You can follow the Directions there, as that is what I do. He already fully explained it and I do not want to step on any toes by copying the steps here.
This will only swap your data mount, not your system, so it should not break anything.

On 4.2.x:
Use foldermount found here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2192122 as it is the best option that I know of:
It will not completely swap your sdcard, but it will allow you to move and make links to large folders of data, such as obb folders, from your internal sdcard to your external, which could save a person gigabytes of space.
Credits: madmack
The steps I take are:
1.click add to add a “link”.
2. Name the link something that will identify it well.
3. Chose your source directory: and navigate to the directory you wish to link. Note: you can only link individual obb folders, not the whole directory. Click the check.
4. Choose your destination folder and either create a folder on your sdcard to move it to, or let it do it for you and click the check.
5. Click the check at the top
6. I just let the app move over the data for me, but you can do it yourself if you want.
7. On the main screen either click the pin or the circle plus symbol. If the pins turn green it is linked, if not trace your steps and make sure everything is being linked to the correct folder.
8. Repeat up to 3 times on the free version and as many times on the paid.
How to hide your navigation bar on stock:
What I do is:
1. Download LMT Launcher from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1330150 This will give you Pie navigation controls.
2. make sure you set it up, by making sure touch services are started ,and that it is set to boot if you are going to hide your navigation bars at boot, otherwise how will you navigate?
Credits: noname81
3.Use GMD hide bar, from the Google Play, to hide your system bars. I use the “busybox method” in the settings and set it to run at boot. You can toggle the hidden bar either by widget, or from the app. I have heard that there are free alternatives, but I'm not sure how well they work, because I have never used them.
Here is a thread, but he says it is for an older, unmaintained version: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1769761

Fake multi-windows. Note: as of writing, there is not any true multi-window ability.
This is easy and does not require root.
1. Download Sidebar or another similar product from Google Play. This will allow one to launch apps from a user defined list, simply by swiping from the side of the screen. You can setup where you want to swipe, how sensitive the trigger area is, etc. This will also allow you to launch floating apps, such as a browser, media player, calculator, etc. in its own window, over running apps.
2. download some floating apps. I use Aircalc (a lot), floating browser, and popcorn player primarily.

I will have screenshots soon. Also, I will clean this up as I go.
If I have forgoten any credits, I am sorry, I am not trying to take credit from anyone, I have just answered these questions a number of times and am trying to help. If you let me know, I will promptly credit you..
Sorry, no foldermount screens yet. I recently started using kk's blackhawk next kernel, so I just leave my big games and use the swap script on my first/stock rom, and all the small stuff on my second more used 4.2.2 rom, eliminating the need for foldermount for now. Hopefully, the steps alone are enough for now.

[Q] Changing Touch Sounds

Hello everyone this is my first post I'm this forum, and I just have what I hope will be a simple question.
The clicking is not horrible, but want to change that to something else. An mp3 or sound effect of my choice.
From what I've gathered, I'll need to root my Nexus 7 32GB (original) and then
Replace the file with a file name of my choosing, with the same file extension.
Please let me know if there's an app out there that will accomplish this simple request with a simple solution. All I can change for the time being is the notification sound.
I work for Radioshack and intend to become knowledgeable about android options. Also, since I'm new to rooting and its potential, any and all advice will be appreciated.
email me if you wish [email protected]
You could at least silence the touch sounds in Settings > Sound > uncheck Touch sounds.
It's like trying to change your car's ignition coils without opening the engine compartment... Not going to happen. To modify things at the /system level, you're going to have to root.

Questions from a first time android owner

Hi everyone! I was using iPhone 4s for 2 years and two days ago I bought myself a Galaxy Note 3 (9000) and I have some questions:
1- Is there a way to control Poweramp from S-View cover menu? I can control the default music app from s-view window but cannot change it to another music player. I have found an app to do what I want but I cannot install it to my phone because it is for galaxy s4, take a look: S-View Music Controls [Xposed] (i can't give outside links)
2- Why on earth the default music app sorts the artists beginning with 'the' on letter T. Like 'The Devlins' is on letter T instead of letter D. Is there a way to change it?
3- Everytime i want to increase the volume while listening music, i have a warning. How to disable it? It's very annoying.
I listen music a lot with my phone. And apart the music related problems I am very happy with my phone.
Thank you for your kind help.
1- Might be able to with root and xposed framework modules that enables it. (this works for s view cover of SGS4 I believe. Someone will probably create one for Note3 S View cover in the future)
2- Don't know
3- Yes, you can do it if you are rooted and install Xposed framework and install this module http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2338474
Since you are new to android, you probably don't have a clue about rooting or the powerful xposed framework. Google and xda are your friends

Nexus 5 & Nexus 6P different notification sounds

Hi
I have a new Nexus 6P. My previous phone was a Nexus 5.
Both are on stock 6.0.1 + root (both were rooted using NRT).
The problem is the new Nexus 6P have different notification sounds than the old Nexus 5. The files have the same name, they just sound different.
I've uploaded a short video that demonstrates the problem:
I can't post links, so please search youtube for "Nexus 5 & Nexus 6P different notification sounds" (uploaded by me - Eran Lotan)
How is it possible? (More important) How can I get back the good old notification sounds I am used to from the Nexus 5?
Can someone with both devices check and see if they have the same problem?
it's not a problem, that's just how it is.
Excuse me for asking - what do you mean by "that's just how it is"? Notification sounds are hardware related, and the fact that both devices run the exact same android version doesn't mean anything? Aren't notification sounds part of the operating system?
what I mean is, they sound different on the nexus 5 and the nexus 6p, even tho they have the same name
sounds are not "hardware related", they're just sound files.
I BELIEVE, but dont quote me, that you can just copy the sound files you want from your N5 and paste them over to the appropriate folder in your N6P... but dont quote me on that. Im sure someone who has tried it can chime in

And even if they are the exact same files, it doesn't mean the different audio systems from two different manufacturers will reproduce system sounds the same way.

This is difficult because I thought that if is the same OS version, and the same file name, the content would be the same as well.
I can't understand why would someone, on the same android version, make a sound file called "woof", and on the nexus 5 it be a "woof", but on the nexus 6p it will be called "woof" but it will actually be a "meow".
If you want to make a new sound file "meow" - make a new file with the name meow!

ha, Im not disagreeing with you. I miss the old sounds... but this is just how it is.

Eran, I'm sorry, i totally misunderstood what youi were getting at. After viewing your video I put my N5, N6 and N6P and performed the same test and you are absolutely right. It's not sa tonal difference, the same-named files are completely different between the N5 and the 6's! They match on the N6 and N6P. I guess Google decided on different sounds for the ringtone and notification sound names.
Thanks, I guess I'll just have to live with that.
If you found locate the notification sound file you could copy it to the Notifications (or Ringtones) folder in Main storage on the 6P. Rename the file (i.e., Callisto2.*) so you can identify it. Then change the notification sound.
If the new file is not listed you may need to reboot or wait a period of time for the system to rescan the device (both of these have worked for me in the past).
Thanks, I'll try it.

I use fx File Explorer:
1. Copy the .ogg files you need from the Nexus 5 ( /system/media/audio/notifications ) to the Download directory, then connect the N5 to your desktop PC and copy the files to your PC (or email the files to yourself and download the files to the Download folder on the 6P).
2. Connect the 6P to the PC and set the USB mode to File Transfer.
3. Move the files to the Notifications directory on the 6P.
In Settings, change the Default notification ringtone: you will see double entries for some of the ringtones; the second one will probably be the sound file from the N5.
