First, let me say this is a temporary solution. There are other solutions that are more permanent, but most require root access.
By temporary I mean, you apply the solution and it is active for that session only. The moment you turn the hotspot off, you have to apply the solution again. Sounds not very useful, huh! But the solution is very simple and therefore elegant.
I occasionally need the hotspot service and it is only for a few minutes with limited data transfer (mail, calendar, web). So, I am willing to accept the temporary nature of this solution.
Here is the solution:
1. Find the sim extraction tool that came with your Nexus 6 (round, metal ring, with pointed tab)
2. While power on and still connected to wifi or cellular, extract the sim card.
3. Go to settings>more>tethering & portable hotspot
4. Setup Wi-Fi hotspot, choose name and password (required only once)
5. Touch Portable Wi-Fi hotspot to enable
6. Insert sim card
You now have hotspot service until you turn it off. The next time you simply have to extract the sim card, enable Portable Wi-Fi hotspot, re-insert sim card.
Simple and elegant ....
Interesting, I wonder if this will work on Moto X (2014)?

easy tether works perfectly without root. only downside is that you have to be connected via a usb cable. there's a bluetooth option but i havent used it.
Anyone know how to get tethering to work if you are rooted? Mine still won't work....

Doesn't Work on the Droid turbo. Tried it like 5 times.
i have the old unlimited data and tethering plan still, no issues at all when i turn on the hotspot. everything works great, been using it for a few days now.
phone is rooted and unlocked bootloader, however, im using the native tethering option
I have the old unlimited plan too but it doesn't include tethering.... That's an extra $30 a month or something crazy! But I'm using the native one now after editing the build.prop

Boot Up
Did anyone else loose the boot up logo after that? I did this on my unlocked, rooted, nexus 6. Now everything seems to work fine, but on boot up, I get the google logo, the 4 colored balls for a couple of seconds then it boots like a normal linux unit would...lol I have taken the line out, and now either way it has lost most of the boot logo. Odd?

I brought a Samsung focus couple of days back and not sure how to turn ON 3G. Read some articles and it says Setting> Cellular> Data connections> 3G ON/OFF but i don't see 3G option there. Let me know if there is way to turn ON 3G.
If not i want to return the phone.
Thanks!
Settings -> Cellular -> Data Connection -> ON/OFF
That's the only setting, and it should be On by default.
Brad.
If you bought if from the AT&T store it should already be on.
If not and its not already updated to NODO youc an chevron unlock it and use the samsung tools to add teh 3g toggle.
Serioulsy though, it should be on and if it doesnt have the samsung tools how did it get turned off?!
Samsung focus 3G
As i told you before, Nope its not there by default. The only way to deal with it is to unlock then let me know how to unlock(what's the process).
Thanks!
3G is turned ON by default and there is no option to turn it off. What mobile operator do you use?
Samsung focus 3G
Well how come i cannot surf internet meaning i can't browse net.
I cannot go to Gmail, yahoo, NY time, ESPN or any website.
I have tried this at different locations(cities) .
It works @ places like Star bucks where Wifi is exists.
Are you on AT&T? Is Settings -> Cellular -> Data Connection ON?
Samsung focus 3G
Had to reboot couple of times to see 3G back. Not sure why it was missing.
Now 3G is back ON and i can surf net.
It's a windows phone.. so obvious that i had to reboot the phone
Thanks!
I have a Samsung Focus from AT&T. Currently flashed with ROGERS rom, but either on this and on AT&T's rom I never saw a 3G icon. Does it means it never connected to network with 3G, or it's always with 3G by default thus never showing 3G sign anymore?
My operator is available on 3G, 4G even so it's not the case of carrier problem for sure.
Edit: managed to get an "E" icon, it stands for Edge no? I followed that tut, to enable it, yet still no 3G, is it working at all at my country? I mean the phone is from the USA, maybe different bands here.
Settings, applications tab, radio
set to World instead of North America.
Also, I suggest installing Samsung Tools to make sure you enable 3G and prevent the relock.
Thanks Finaly know what the RADIO setting does Thought its for the FM RADIO :]
Unfortunately cannot install Samsung Tools on my DEV unlocked phone, dunno why, is there any other method to check my 3G?

From your other posts, I get that your phone got relocked. Do the Chevron unlock again, and first thing install Samsung Tools, run it, check all boxes and restart your phone. Then, you might do other stuff.

Ahhh, you unlocked via Chevron Labs, not Chevron.
You should be okay. As long as you can deploy XAPs, you're unlocked.
Well I found out that my hosts file has new entry, dunno how this happened, I never did it myself. Probably some app from XDA forums did it. I removed it and I get different message "phone ignoring us"......meh.

I basically suffered the same issue for my first 2 days with a new Nexus 4. I discussed my issues in the Straight Talk thread (ST). After I exhausted all the possible solutions offered up via my Google searches, only then I went the route of contacting Straight Talk directly. I could have saved myself a boat load of grief, if I had simply contacted ST at the start. Give it a try. I went to the Facebook icon on the ST homepage. Then, I clicked the Support icon on the ST Facebook page. It asked about creating a Ticket. I said yes and entered a short description of the problem. There were a couple of email exchanges and finally about 12 hours after starting my communication with ST, they said to pull the battery and send myself a picture message. Of course, we cannot pull the battery, so I just sent myself a picture message. A miracle. As I sent the message, the phone internet/data connection opened and my first MMS was finally sent. Note, I checked my mobile data connection just prior to sending the MMS message and it was still "disconnected". I think ST must have done something from their end, to correct my problem. I only used the exact APN settings that were provided with the ST AT&T sim card activation kit. Save yourself some trouble and open a trouble ticket. I learned the hard way. I love my N4 and my ST AT&T signal strength and reliability is great in the NJ, DE, PA tri-state area.

Thank You for the info, I called ST and they said my ported number is not in their system yet(even though i can use the number), which will take 24 hours and then may be the data services will work. I have couple of more hours to verify
Rooting cannot break your phone's ability to access the network.
Any new info on this OP? I just got my N4 yesterday and am using a AT&T Straight Talk SIM, but I also can not connect to mobile data. I had my number ported over from Boost Mobile, so did waiting a day or two help?
EDIT: I also tried a million different APN settings to no avail.

Wouldn't be a custom ROM. Phone came straight from Google and I'm the first owner. Will check with sim provider and see if its that.
ok so this appears to be a phone related problem. as nexus obviously takes a micro sim i tried it with an adapter in an old n95 and after that in a mates galaxy s3 and they register on "EE" both on the home screen and when you search for a new network.
however mine still appears as in the first picture and as below searching for a network. so the nexus either isnt setup for ee/orange/tmob or it cant read the sim????
this is running the latest 4.2.2 jellybean and has made no difference even restoring the phone to factory once.
anyone else using a nexus 4 on ee/orange/t-mobile in the uk and got this problem?
Ive also contacted orange (my provider) and it was them who suggested trying in another mobile but they also ran a diagnostic and that didnt bring up any errors.
have i got a dodgy sim card? (seems unlikely as it works fine in other mobiles)
has the nexus 4 not been configured properly for my network? (also unlikely as there must be thousands of people with a nexus 4 and on the same network)
Or has the phone got a fault itself? (bloody well hope not as its only 4 days old!!)
anyone shed any light on this as its got me really confused

I doubt it since I'm on GiffGaff where you have to manually enter the APN settings but it always said giffgaff wherever it had the carrier label. Also, as you can see the other networks' names come up fine. @OP maybe you could try manually entering the APNs and connecting to mobile data to see if simms is right.
Mine is exactly the same. I'm on orange. My SGS2 showed it as EE like it should be. This nexus 4 has always had varying strings of the '@' symbol. Been like that since I got it in November. I just tell people I'm on an exclusive network not available to paupers.

I have the same issue, I got a panther orange sim and put it into the nexus 4 and 'Orange' was displayed for about 4 days. Then out of the blue it changed to @@@@@@@.
I reset the phone but nothing changed. I took out the sim card and with no sim in the phone, I searched for mobile networks and the phone lists Orange, EE and T-Mobile. But with the sim in the phone they are all listed as @@@@@@@@.
Sim works fine in every way as far as I can tell, its just the network name which is displayed incorrectly.
Hello hi
I got given a Nexus 4 by a bezzie not long ago and it had a 'rare' signal loss problem where sometimes you wouldn't have access to the internet, regardless of how much data you have left etc. Now i'm not sure if this phone is just old (friend bought it like, exactly when it came out in UK) but now the signal loss problem is frequent... it started last week and lasts for a couple days, and now it's happening again today and still not working. I'm not sure what the problem is? I fiddled around with the test options etc to see if it was searching for networks that it couldn't find but no, no problems there... Please help!

Is your bootloader unlocked? If it's not it will wipe everything on your device to unlock it. You can back up your apps and their data with helium tho so you can keep some of your stuff, and Google backs up some stuff as well unless you deactivated that. You just have to make sure to copy your helium backups to your computer so you don't loose them when your phone is wiped. So your might not want to unlock and try flashing another radio unless this is really important for you.
Yeah its unlocked and all that c:

Extract Radio.img from the latest factory image here: https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images and then flash it in Fastboot, or via the Nexus Root Toolkit if you do not know how to flash via ADB
Yeah that didn't work, I tried flashing it with that image but it didn't really do anything, still not getting any data... Thanks for the tip though
Is it just mobile data or everything (calls, mobile data, text)? If the radio does not fix the issue, it could potentially be non-software related problems like the physical hardware, or even the phone network you are on. The N4 uses spring antennas internally, and overtime, and with enough bumps, they could cause issue. This piece might be helpful http://www.androidauthority.com/nex...rnal-image-battery-easily-replaceable-128434/
Yeah its literally just data I can't get, sometimes it comes back but it still hasn't. I'm receiving texts/calls as well as sending them just fine. Pretty sure it might be the hardware maybe? Might need to get a new phone :c

No big need for an app, the turning on hot spot while signal refreshes method works.....Look up details in the Turbo2 forum.
I can get the signal refresher method to work, but the hotspot shortcut in the notification panel only turns it off for me. It will not turn it on. Any suggestions? I have to queue the hotspot settings then switch to activate from there.

I currently am working with the FCC and the EFF to address this
Below you can read my complaint. I have removed identifying information for the time being but have at this point escalated beyond the FCC. Last night I was contacted by the FCC and we discussed plans for next steps. They have forwarded my complaint to Verizon and I was contacted by Verizon Enterprise Resolutions Team. I spoke with VZW today and had a 45 minute conversation discussing their restriction on the fact that Verizon is treading very close to the 2012 ruling. At this point I am waiting to hear back from Crystal from Verizon's internal team on next steps.
VERIZON WIRELESS - 700MHZ C BLOCK RESTRICTING USERS ABILITY TO UTILIZE OPEN FREQUENCY
On Friday August 19th I purchased a new phone from Verizon Wireless. I was surprised to find out that the applications that I normally use to tether my wireless broadband no longer worked due to a combination of efforts set by Google to patch security holes and Verizon Wireless' modification of the stock rom that was shipped from Motorolla Mobility.
Verizon has modified the stock internal mobile broadband hook in settings and forced it to call a 'Subscription Check' service that requires end users to enroll in a 30$ a month mobile broadband service in addition to their current bill.
While the second part is not new, the first; disabling tethering applications, is.
In 2011 the Free Press filed a complaint with the FCC located here
freepress.net/sites/default/files/fp-legacy/FreePress_CBlock_Complaint.pdf
In this complaint it holds that Verizon Wireless choice and collusion with Google to disable or limit third party tethering apps steering users to their paid server is not only poor business practice but against the fair use of the C block LTE frequency and in the FCC's 2012 ruling found below, they agree.
transition.fcc.gov/Daily_Releases/Daily_Business/2012/db0731/DOC-315501A1.pdf
The settlement of 1.25 million against Verizon not only solidifies fault, but reinforces the necessity to keeping the use of this frequency open to competition for applications and use.
I feel that the current situation that I am facing also affect other end users and is simply a rehash of the 2011 issue.
I have contacted Verizon and have the recorded messages located here:
Call 1 -REMOVED-
Received email response listed here:
-REMOVED-
Call 2 -REMOVED-
Verizon Wireless HQ
Dispute Resolution manager
one Verizon way, VC52S417 Baskin Ridge NJ, 07920-1097
I am looking for advise primarily if I should pursue this issue, if I am off base or if this is something that the FCC has interest in pursuing.
Thanks very much

Method
This is put together from the droid turbo 2 thread. Works for me on unlimited data.
1. Download "Network Signal Refresher Lite By 8JAPPS"
2. Run the app, Hit the refresh button.
3. Pull down notification drawer, pull down again to get to the quick settings tiles
4. Wait until the Sim card icon changes to the completely empty signal bars icon
5. Hit the hotspot button only once, wait a few seconds it will turn on.
It works for me all the time. Posting from a tethered computer as we speak.

Have you taken/installed the recent software update?...
Trying to cinfirm thart signal refresh native hotapot procedure still works afyer the software update.
Tether Update
Just got my Moto Z Force today WoW!!! this is one motorola mother ship, anyway while we wait for the sunshine miracle, Tether is great with the PDANet app using Bluetooth, Super fast, not like the unfortunate HTC devices that try the same thing (BT is real slow) on the Z, BT is blazing fast, not much different than the Native Hotspot I used on HTC M9. Hey its free so WTF right?

Do you know if the signal refresher hack still works with the MCOS24.104-35-1-9 latest update?
Yes works after update! I just got a surface rt for work and was trying to find a root for t2 but with no luck but this worked!!! Very awesome! I came across the pull sim card out and out back in with little luck everytime I out card back in hotspot would disable. But this did the trick thank you!
Does this work with the nougat update?
Don't want to upgrade if it means losing hotspot.

I can't get it to work with the Network Refresh method. Shoot.
Just out of curiosity what is everyone using the mobile hotspot for? I never feel the need to use it, maybe I can offer some alternative insight.
I use it for when other people need wifi, doing homework at the park, my 3DS, very useful if you're traveling. Used it for like two years when I lived alone as my home wifi. Used to sell phones in a store that didn't have wifi and used it to backup and restore stuff for customers. Lots of little uses that add up quickly.
