I'm quite happy with the performance of my N1 after it got Gingerbread 2.3.3. and I don't believe I'll change my phone until 2013, but, ¿was this the last update/upgrade we will get?
Highly unlikely. The Nexus One is currently Google's official developer phone. That probably won't be changing before the next Android release.
I can see it getting Ice Cream Sandwich or whatever it's being called, and then that'll be it. I can see future versions will be dual-core phones only.
Probably will be more updates...but when is anyones guess.
i think it will get one more major update, at least. probably nothign after that. who knows though...its been a miracle little phone thus far.
The next Nexus will probably take over as the developer phone. Dual Core is the wave of the future. Speculation of course. Who really knows at this point. We are far from another Nexus.

do you think that there could come an update that the Nexus One just couldn't run for performance reasons?

no not at all. if google wanted to optimize android to be better, the nexus one could handle it. look at windows phone 7 devices. microsoft requires all WP7 devices to have the same hardware cpu and GPU as what the nexus one has, qualcom first gen cpu with adreno 200 GPU, and WP7 devices are the smoothest and fastest UI ever done. microsoft just optimized the graphics with great drivers etc.
so the nexus one is still capable, but whether google will ever optimize, doubt it.
and no i dont think they will make android UI such that its so graphics heavy that only dual core phones can use it. not for couple years at least from now.
The next Nexus will be released later this year and the N1 will not receive another timely update.
Another thread of guesswork.
Please state your official sources - or write "I guess that ...".
On the other hand, the OP is to blame - I don't recall we have official Google speaker on the forum that can answer this question reliably, and everything else will be guesswork until the next update is officially affirmed/declined.
XDA is no longer worth my time.
I think that time is over for our Nexus One. Unfortunately :-(
I think that Gingerbread was the last update that we received.

We may stop getting 'official' updates eventually but that doesn't mean we won't get them at all. As long as we have the likes of Cyanogen developing for the phone we'll still get updates of the custom variety.
Most people will have moved on to other devices by then anyway.
I do not know but what was the last official update the G1 got? I can recall it going beyond the official updates (with custom ROMs of course).
The crappy parts will that it won't be able to do video chat, NFC (w/o an microSD NFC card) and won't be able to handle anything dual-core specific. Other than that the phone is a beast and was a complete monster in January 2010.
Well looks like 2.3.4 will come to N1, albeit without the biggest upgrade of the update.

Bring it on! My Nexus is ready for a 2.3.4 update!
So Google I/O they Announced the new Android update what do you guys think? and do you guys think the update be available for N1 users?

Yeah, just saw it on Android and Me as well:

I'm curious as well..
What I think is it won't come to the Nexus One. Google said that they're aiming for 18 months guaranteed update for a phone, and the Nexus One is conveniently almost at the 18 months mark.

I'm actually optimistic about it since they didn't say the minimal specs for Ice cream, Also I'm Sure the Nexus S still supported which specs are not too far apart NS still runs a Single Core

I believe that was in referrence to Manufactures and how long they are required to support a device with current updates granting the hardware can handle it.
Google branded devices to my understanding ( they never stated otherwise ) will continue to be updated nexus1 included for many updates to come.
Glad they are merging into just one OS. While we might not like to Admit it .. thats a apple stratedgy to make one OS that fits all, makes updates much easier to manage.
However this is GOOGLE and i am sure they will be do it better than rotten apple.
I don't believe they will spend their time on the N1... I guess we're done with the N1
Hopefully they learned from the "version mess" bad news currently going through the press and "one OS for all" means really for all and every product including the nexus one and other hardware.

That is what I thought in the begging but now I actually think they will for the simple fact N1 was and still is A developer phone and specs still relevant.
Wouldn't surprise me if the Nexus One gets left out of this, it's already been from 2.1 to 2.3. Neither of the 2 previous dev phones have recieved this many updates in the first place.
Lets hope the new nexus device for this year is a phone and not a tablet!
Ice Cream Sandwich is scheduled for a Q4 release and will come with a new Nexus device, dual core or possibly quad core. I just hope its the Galaxy S2 frame, with all the codec support and Gorilla Glass =)
Nexus S will MOST LIKELY get updated as they just released the 4G version on Sprint. Nexus One is similar to the Nexus S bar NFC and FFC. The coupled Hardware Acceleration should make it fly even for a single core old Snapdragon though...

By Google not releasing Ice Cream to N1 owners would be the whole opposite of what Google is trying to advocate to manufactures & carriers. even if they said a 18 months which I think they should of made it 24 months it would of made more sense to people.
N1 is gonna get that update if NS gets that update, that's for sure.
In the end, I don't care if there is an official release from Google for the N1. Dev's here on XDA will port it over anyway.

I actually don't mind running stock I just wish I could use setcpu without rooting that would be my dream.
I like all the tweaking options that CM gives you, coupled with the full version of ADW Launcher EX and it's perfect.
IceCream should hopefully make for a cool desert on my N1

Nope, the Nexus S is not a Google Dev Phone. The most recent Google Dev Phone is still the Nexus One and can be purchased by developers from Google directly. The Nexus S is consumer focused, and there's a thread in the Nexus S forum that heavily denounce being called a Dev phone.
This is inevitable. In a week's time, Google is going to release a new version of Android to compete with iOS 6. The million dollar question is: will the old and already underpowered back when it was launched Nexus S get an OFFICIAL update to Jelly Bean? I seriously doubt it. But there is hope. If it is a speed booster rather than a entirely new design and power hungry features, I think the Nexus S might get lucky. What do you guys think? Fingers crossed.

new os means a new nexus phone, so i doubt a new os is coming .. just a minor update if anything
Performance issues? I doubt it. Features don't necessarily mean slower though, better with ICSs built in data limiter/tracker than a 3rd party app for example. Depends on what they add though, of course.
Small chance we'll get it though. I'm leaning towards a fat no if it's released beyond August or so, before that and we may have a chance. Either way, we'll have rock solid ports within weeks, just like ICS. It amazed me how stable initial ports of ICS were before it was released officially, it was my daily driver (i believe i used eugenes). I have (blind?) faith in the same thing when JB is released.

I am 100% confident that there will be minimum visual changes. The dev team spend so much effort into making a guideline for Android app designs, they are most certainly not gonna ditch that. So that leaves us with one other major change Google can bring to the platform: speed improvements. Both app speeds and overall smoothness. If you check Google io app and the schedules in there, one of them is all about app smoothness and maintaining a constant frame rate. I am hoping that third party apps will be as smooth as the iOS counter parts within a few releases. But back to what this thread is about: I think NS is highly likely to get this update, since it runs ICS okay, but not as fast as some desired, (multi-tasking). So this update should be like froyo, not much visual, lots of under the hood changes, if NS can run ics, it can run jb.

I think it depends on how big the step in version-numbers will be. 4.1 - we'll get it. 5.0 - nope.
Jelly Bean has always been rumored to be 5.0, but latest news have it to be 4.1. (Benchmark logs of an upcoming android tablet)
Remember the nexus one - it started with 2.1 and went all the way to an official 2.3.6.

Think about it: it might be a new interface/design for a tablet, Android really need something solid if they want any chance of fighting iOS and windows RT.

Considering that it seems like RAM usage is going relatively well within ICS, i can't see any worry about that there. 1GB would've helped in any situation, not just moving toward JB which likely wouldn't make a difference. That's the main thing that could have held the NS back. I'm with you unless IO implies anything otherwise. I'm thinking alot more will have to do with dual and quad core setups than our NSs single, particularly with the idea of constant framerates in mind. I see how there isn't that much left to do in the same environment and considering how much effort was put into ICS little will change that's not well below what we see happening, and most of that relates directly to performance and basically making the UI smoother, prettier and maybe a touch more colourful.

I think that if it's more bloated and non-optimized, even less handsets could possibly get it then ICS. So I'm more positive NS will get it
Seeing as ICS was meant to be a unification of tablet/smartphone OS, I don't think they would release another tablet exclusive OS to tear that unity apart again. Also, if we're learning from the past here, the Nexus One got two updates before losing support so Jelly Bean should be the final update for the Nexus S.
Also, since ICS was a major interface revamp, I think Jelly Bean's gonna be focusing on other parts so really, Nexus S does not have any reason not to be able to support it. We'll see though
Have you seen this?

Seems that the new version will be like froyo / GB transition, more improvement, better visuals. Maybe our devices will get the update.
Yea I'd be happy with a few extra features like magel but the main thing for me is probably just speed and making things look a little nicer ..
I hope they call it 4.1 if it's a smallish update though otherwise will have the same issues iOS six had in that really is like 5.5

"all the way" is stretching it though. We got from 2.3.6 to 4.0.4. Much better than the Nexus One in that respect.
Nothing has been set in stone. We won't know until Google says something. I posted those 2 links to show that JB looks to be a minor upgrade from 4.0.4>4.1. I think if this is the case, there's a chance we'd get it. Remember the N1 went from 2.1>2.2>2.3. 4.0 was a major change, which was the need for the first number in the version to change. Just my .02

Agree with you here. Minor updates are usually pushed, major ones aren't necessarily. I think the only reason the Nexus S got ICS is that there would have been an outcry if we didn't. Seriously, a Google phone with absolutely no upgrade? That would have been ridiculous.
I was just reading through tons of news on portals, and I can't find any info about Nexus S or Galaxy Nexus and 4.2 being rolled out. I mean, Google surely has already decided what to do with us.
I mean honestly, I know Cyanogen or AOKP, or hopefully Rasbean will keep updating my favourite phone ever (really, I have never had a phone this awesome. Pioneer of it's price range and specs!) but I want to know if Google still likes their Nexus S.
it cant be that hard, I mean there really isnt anything new.
I wondered how long it would take for a thread title like this would come up..HAHA!
Can't see why not, it got 4.1 so should get 4.2 as it's not a huge update. Well, that's my wishful thinking anyway!
Still JB, will get

I'd say ^^ pretty much ends this convo. Right on target.
Nice to hear all that. Nexus S ftw
Why not
Our Nexus S it's untill powerfull...
It better! I just bought a used one yesterday!
I think the chances are pretty good that the NS will get 4.2, but beyond that I'm skeptical. We're coming up on the phone's two-year anniversary for one thing. It's also begun to chug a bit with Jelly Bean, and I doubt the next major update will be any less resource intensive. Between the age and the hardware limitations, I suspect we're in the twilight months of Google support for the Nexus S.
must will get 4.2.... not official no problem
this will probably be the last update the Nexus S gets.
Good thing tho, you know most likely that XDA will have some form of port.
I'm getting the Nexus 4 tho!!! my contract is almost up. I might even get it off contract! (AU$400 for 32GB, thats dirt cheap compared to the iPhone 5 which is AU$900! That's less than half the price, for better specs... and android... and build quality is improved dramatically from the previous Nexusesss)
I think it will get 4.2 ... it an incremental upgrade, so anything 'jellybean' we should get
Can't wait to try 4.2

last year, when I bought my Nexus S, someone told me: "It's a year's old phone.. don't waste your money..."
I'm almost sure for 4.2 ...
I personally think about a Google "3 letters law" for Nexus devices. Nexus One went from E(Eclair) to G(Gingerbread), passing by Frojo, Nexus S will go from G to J passing by ICS, and GNex will "live" from I to L ... Officially speaking, I mean And, of course, I hope there will always be some clever group (like CyanogenMod, for example) or "one man band" who enjoy to develop ROM or kernel for our preferred devices :fingers-crossed:

You made the right choice .
It remains to be seen if the Nexus S and Xoom will get 4.2 or if 4.1.2 was the last update. We won't know until 4.2 gets released to AOSP. I will say that since they seem to have axed the Honeycomb-style tablet interface from 4.2, the Xoom may be out. As for the Nexus S...historically Google has only maintained support for the current and previous phone generation, which would now be the Nexus 4 and Galaxy Nexus. That said, however, I don't see anything major that would lead me to believe that the Nexus S couldn't run 4.2...unless they tossed out support for capacitive buttons entirely.
Regardless of whether or not there is a stock 4.2 ROM for either device, I'm sure the developers here will have custom ROMs that have it baked in.
I haven't seen any posts about it. I am sure our phones can handle it, but are there any devs thinking about working on it? I know someone got the Nexus 4 to boot on L.

Also remember that "L" is a developer preview. It isn't really designed to work - it's designed to show developers what the next version of Android will be like. Very basic things like the API are still changing. Even when an "L" ROM comes out, I would avoid it as a daily driver at all costs until it stabilizes and gets into Beta.

I am aware of all that. I have been watching Android evolve for a few years now. My question was merely why there isn't any talk about it around here from the devs.
I'm hyped for L for the improved battery life.
Well since the Galaxy S3's are getting KitKat, I'm sure we'll be getting Android L when it's stable and released. If anything, we can always get an AOSP Rom
