Gents,
I need your help about "kernel", as I know when installing Android I need the folder named Android and the data.img.
But the kernel what is that?
Thanks for reading and more for helping.
The kernel is the core of the Android OS. Windows too runs on a kernel. Every build already includes one, and usually the most up-to-date or stable version, so you shouldn't have to worry about it, unless you want to update your kernel some time in the future.
I've been running Android for several months now and I've not updated the kernel once.
Still there is somthing to say
First I want to thank you for giving me some of your time.
The answer is clear, but why there is update always (now is 8.6)?
and what the kernel is including, is it the same of Android folder?
I hope I will find some more time.
Check out here for a bunch of explanations of terms that are commonly used around here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=852660&highlight=glossary
The reason that the kernels are updated alot is that the people who build the kernels find flaws in them through testing them, and through the feedback they recieve here on XDA.
Then they work to try and find ways to fix those flaws. Sometimes in fixing one flaw, a new one emerges. Generally it is a good idea to use the latest version of whatever kernel came with the build.
Hi all, ok i have a samsung galaxy s2 running GINGERBREAD.XWKF3 And with Android version 2.3.3 My question is what kernal version/or what rom can i use for this when im ready to root it, which i am now, ok sorry to ask this but just want to make sure as dont wana brick this baby, ive read so many things on here im getting confused, so is there an actual thread on here specificly for above ? Also which rom would you suggest i try, ie what are you using ?
Hope to get some answers soon as i seem to remember i rooted my old sg 1 easier than the s2 ,
Thankyou from Brian

I'd advice to stay on Stock ROM if you don't have any craziness about Custom ROM's and if you read too much you will get confused. Stay simple, it's the best way to get the full effect of your device.

What are you expecting from rooting >>Its a method to gain user rights at a lower level is all .It wont speed your phone up .
As Chainfire says .
Help! Which file do I use ?
Listen closely, for I will say zis only once!
Go to Settings -> About phone -> Kernel Version. Note the string present there:
2.6.35.7-I9100XXKG1-CL349526
What matters most (KG1) in this case, is in bold. Try to find the matching file under downloads:
CF-Root-SGS2_XX_OXA_KG1-v4.1-CWM4.zip
The XX and OXA identifiers are not that important. Usually a "KG1" kernel is a "KG1" kernel, and that is that. Sometimes (pretty rare) it happens there will be multiple different kernels with the same name in different firmwares, that are actually different. If this happens, they are usually only very minor changes and you should expect them to still be fully compatible. I include the "XX" and "OXA" identifiers so the very advanced users can deduce from which full firmware I have taken the kernel file.
Don't worry too much, just find the matching download and use it. What if there is no matching download ? You can ask me to make one, but I can tell you right now, I very very rarely make CF-Root's for kernels on request, unless it is the very latest kernel that has been released by Samsung. In the latter case, be sure to let me know. If there's no match and I'm not making one, try finding the closest match. You should treat "KG1" as a number, but instead of 1-9, we have 1-9, A-Z (where A would be 10, and Z would be 35). "KG2" is really close to "KG1", "KF1" is not close to "KG1" at all. I hope that makes sense.
thankyou

Since the development thread is closed by OP request( sad but true ), and personally building a "port" of the ROM, i'm glad to help everybody as i can, with this thread.
It doesn't mean to be a development thread since i only build and implement some changes, but just to share comments, issues( like xposed one ) or just ideas to people who own this device ( CN or ROW ).
As a reminder you can find my builds here: LINK or just use OTA function in ROM.
And a big thanks to @frantisheq and @Electry for the works on CM13, and for the next, CM14.

Are someone try to flash Vibe Z2 (NON PRO) with this ROM?
don't do it, you will probably brick the phone.
K920/Z2 PRO only
Uploaded new build!
Should have Dec 5 patches, have a nice day
Try to install the latest build together with xposed. There is a boot loop with CM logo...... It seems to me there was such kind of problem......
That should be fixed by cm ? . Will apply the xposed fix in next build.
Thanks to inform me about this!
Tapatalk
updated build, with xposed patch, hoping now works fine
The latest build works fine for me. I installed it with xposed.
Hey @malaga82
I have a strange feeling that the new ROM is worse in performance compared to the previous build. It has way more stutters and sometimes the system UI resets and changes my wallpaper to the stock one. Anyone else facing such issues?

Could you please provide more details about this behavior and I try to reproduce it? Now I have not such kind of problem. But I can say that the UI sometimes has strange behavior. For example, the horizontal size of quick settings can be more widely than the size of the screen.
maybe it's something related to CM repo's and they will fix "soon".
give some days to see if they fix anything, i'll provide a new build.
In additional to my previous report I would like to add that the latest build cannot hold loading. At the previous build from 16 Nov I can run at the same time a navigation application and a video registration application. Now I cannot do the same because the device is rebooting due to overheating. I tried to figure out what is going on and found that the high limit of CPU0 temperature is set up to 85 C (it seems to me it is low....) and I cannot change it – try several tuning tools. And it is not only one reboot – there are several reboots….. After its a Bluetooth pairing was lost….. And I can repair a normal work only wipe cache & dalvik through TWRP and pair a Bluetooth once again…..
i'd like to have more feedback if possible.
i'm thinking to try to build with the "old" kernel that have cpu voltage control and other features i included times ago.
atm we are a bit stuck with development.

What information could I provide to you to help?
i just want to know if someone else have that overheating issue
Could you please prepare a build with "old" kernel? Who does not face the overheating problem can stay on the previous one
Solved games issue.
Hello!
Sorry for my English, I from Russia.
On roms later CM 13 2016.03.07 in file: build.prop, increase the value: dalvik.vm.heapsize= from 512m to 768m. This led to the errors in game Real racing 3 (insufficient free memory, missing textures, game crashes). With value 512m games work fine.
If install Adreno drivers from ROM CM 13 2016.03.07, game Gear.club also work fine. The difference can be noticed immediately after starting the game.
I also sent this message to frantisheq.
Happy new year!
Solved games issue.
Additional information to the previous post.
I was looking the file: default.prop, and the parameter ( dalvik.vm.dex2oat-xmx ) is set to =512m. System parameter ( dalvik.vm.heapsize=768m) overlap kernel parameter. Possible, if rebuild kernel with the value 768m, all be fine? I don't test this.
Hi!
After a long time hacking my phone by setting up different kind of custom roms and kernels, I'd like to start from a fresh base before going to a custom Q rom
Indeed, I have some bugs that appeared through installs, like an echoing while calling or sometimes the network doesn't works anymore after ann accidental full discharge.
So to remove these issues, I think it would be great to reinstall android from the beginning, just like you do with a normal OS on a computer. Just wipe everything and clean install
I already did a few fresh installs by going from android 7 up to 9, just to be sure I didn't miss any firmware version, but I don't like the idea of installing something over bugs.
Thank you for your help, and sorry for the mistakes I probably did in my thread (I'm not a native speaker )
Firmware version
Well, it's been a few days since I firstly posted this (Happy new year!! )
I forgot to mention something: The main reason why I want to do this is because I'm not sure about my firmware version, nor if I installed all the versions properly as I don't understand quite well what happens in the memory while flashing something
I've use ROMs in the past, but never with the Essential phone. In fact my phone has run so well, I've never even factory reset it a single time, let alone put a ROM on it. But with Essential gone, I need a way to keep my phone secure.
I'm wondering what the best way to keep stock android (nothing wrong with stock) but allow myself to get the latest android updates as they come out. In looking at the ROMs there still seems to be some issues with bugs, and since this phone is my daily driver, I'd like it to be as stable as possible.
So is there:
1) A way to get the PH-1 on stock, but still get the important security updates somehow?
2) A rom available (even if android 9) that works for PH-1 that would be super stable but also get all new security updates?
Thanks in advance for any help.

I could have sworn I saw something that basically said you can download the latest stock version (that includes security updates) and flash it every time there is a new update. But I guess I could have misunderstood?

That was the case until Essential went out of business - you could do OTA updates, or download and flash yourself. The stock security updates were only provided by Essential, and the Feb 2020 update was the last one for this phone...

No way to stay on stock & get security updates (well you will get some direct from Google ie the Google Play System Update, the last one shown lower down this page
https://source.android.com/security/bulletin/2020-03-01
and can be found in your settings under security, but its only a fraction of patches)
That means your best option is probably the Android 11 GSI when it's out of Developer Preview in a July (?) and hope it's bug free, else Lineage etc .... not that you want custom roms, sorry.

Basically I'm looking for something safe and stable, whether it is ROM or otherwise. Right now I'm stable, but not safe. So you think my best bet is move to Lineage (to become safe) and then switch to the GSI when it is out of developer preview (and stable)?
From what I have read and asked here: https://forum.xda-developers.com/essential-phone/development/rom-evolution-x-4-1-69-t4073153
This ROM will give you what you are asking for as far as regular security updates are concerned. I have been waiting for Lineage to release an "OFFICIAL" version of Android 10 for our PH-1's but so far nothing. Also I would not mind going on Android 11 but then I do not think that will get monthly security updates either so I am thinking about trying this Evolution ROM out.... I have never worked with a phone with A/B slots so that is my only concern but after reading all the threads I am starting to understand how that works.
Hope this info helps you out.

Guess for stability & functionality it would have to be LineageOS.
Looks like May version is ver 17.1 (Android 10), not sure how this compares to previous version re bugs/working functions, but that means previous ver is already a month out of date on security )

I'm on EvoX the only thing tht is not t working very well, is tht if u fast forward or rewind on Netflix ur phone reboots, hopefully fixed next update, but I'm happy with this ROM, the touch lag is almost non existence for some reason, glad they managed to fix tht. Also L1 certification is still there. The 360 camera workes better in this Rom for some reason. The best part is the customization though, so much

Very strange that no one has started a new thread in the Custom ROM section about this... (This being an official release version of Lineageos 17.1) you would think it would be bigger news? There is still only an Unofficial thread... strange..
Anyway IronRoo let me know what you decide to do and how it goes... I am still on the fence as my PH-1 is currently working perfect on stock 10 but it is of course on the Feb 29th security patch... plus I haven't done a custom ROM install since my LG G5 but I hear it is like riding a bike... lol :silly::fingers-crossed:

For LOS, I think we should wait until their server is back, and few more releases come out.
LineageOS 17.1 for Essential is so new, only couple releases, and still in updating state.

Yes, many will agree, though I'm OK with giving it a go but I need to buy a new high quality USB cable as kid damaged my Samsung one and have only a cheap 6" one which I'm not sure I trust to flash without bricking phone.

Just did a quick websearch and a few have tried flashing it reddit and here on the 16 thread, and it's suggested wait for next release (first recovery had issue, but now fixed, but next release of ROM should have a few fixes & Lineage build servers are down so not sure when new release will drop)
