[Q] MHL Charging Issue - Galaxy Note 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Okay so currently I use my genuine Samsung 2.0 MHL adapter for my car because I use the AppRadio 2 head unit in my car. I use the ARUnchained app with it and everything works great. However if I use a navigation app like Waze, my battery drains even though it states that it is charging. If i'm just listening to music without the phone constantly looking for my location then it will charge, but slowly. What really blows my mind is that if my phone is at 100% charge when I first plug it in and then use Waze, it will stay fully charged. I am using a Scosche car charger that puts out 2.4 amps per usb port. Also when I go into my battery settings it shows that the phone is being charged from (AC) instead of (USB). I have tried using various USB cables, MHL adapters, and even different car chargers(the one I currently use puts out the most power so I'm sticking with it). My question is, how can I get my phone to charge when using a battery draining app like Waze? It absolutely blows my mind that if you start with a full charge it will stay charged but you plug it in with anything less than 100% and it will drain.

I noticedon my phone that when navigation software being used my charger cannot keep up with battery drain untill i lover screen brightnes

Charging - Desk v Car - Confusing

Hey Guys,
I have a query regarding charging my Hermes / 8525.
If I plug the phone into a wall unit, the orange charge light immediately comes on.
If I use the phone, or receive a call the phone continues to charge.
Once the phone has been used the phone/screen stays on.
When I plug the phone into my car adapter, the phone doesn't begin to charge until the phone goes into sleep mode. But then when I go to use the phone it stops charging. So if the battery is on it's last minutes, plugging the phone into my car adapter does NOT let me continue to use the phone. I have tried 3 different car chargers.
This week I bought an XTLINK Bluetooth Cell to Landline Converter. This is a great little box, and I love that once I walk into my house my cell phone rings through my phone system. Call Clarity is great.
But with the Bluetooth link active constantly the battery drains like crazy.
So I purchased a desktop charger unit. It arrived today. You can use it to charge the phone or with USB to synch the phone. So I plugged in the wall adapter to the cradle, and the phone only charges when not in use.
But when I hook up the cradle via mini-usb to my laptop the phone goes into constant charge mode - but it's doesn't stay on after being in use.
Can someone explain to me why the phone has these different charging modes ? Is there something I can do to change a setting to make the charging more consistent ?
Thank you,
Dave

no one else knows about this ?
I have the same problem with USB charging in the car when I was running vp3G's Rom. Now I switch to Crc's Rom and the problem is gone.
But my phone would stop charging if I use my GPS software thru bluetooth and bluetooth headset. In that case I just reset my phone and it would charge normal again.
I have seen this too. I don't know the exact details, but the phone checks the charging current when it is on, to see if it's within a certain value. If it's not, it stops the charging circuit to protect the battery. That's why it works when it is asleep. You'll need to buy a car charger specifically designed for the Hermes.
Yep, there is a long thread on car charging on the forum. Like the other uses says, either buy a HTC official charger or have a look at the other thread about soldering pins 4 & 5 together on the USB connector.
I have a generic car charger from a local electronics store that does not have a problem charging whilst talking over a bluetooth hands free and navigating using a
bluetooth gps receiver, however, I am using one of CRC's roms so that might be why.
The only thing I have found is that if I leave the charger plugged into the hermes when I start the car the hermes stops charging and will not charge again until I reboot it... disconnecting the plug before cranking the engine and then whacking it in straight after works around the problem though.
There is probably so much of a voltage drop when cranking the engine that the little DC-DC convertor can not keep the charge current up.

Car dock charging ICS

Hi community,
I have a query I couldn't resolve on any ICS rom. For a number of weeks I was pretty sure it didn't charge when settled in a car dock. Lately it appeared in fact device is charged bit the ROM is unaware. It wouldn't show an icon nor show charging status on a lock screen. Also battery stats are unable to tell the phone has been charged.
I had a theory that car/lighter charger had too low power so I connected car dock to travel charged and got same result.
Same time desk dock works just perfect.
Anyone had same experience?

Not really a car dock, but I'm using a car charger bought for Samsung phones which is actually from energizer and works for just about anything usb. it plugs on the car lighter socket and has 2 usb outputs. My car supports 120w and the charger it good to up 1A so lack of power is never an issue. I just plug the phone's data cable there and the SGS charges normally. Using ics elite's 1.2 rom.
however, i do have your experience with some other (rather crappier, not even Android) Samsung phone. It appears connected and charging and it doesn't turn off if the battery is low if I'm phoning someone but as soon as i plug it out it didn't charge at all. My charger has a red light that turns on when it's charging something but it's not even on for this phone. Not really sure why this happens. The sgs works flawlessly though.

Ignore this, double posted accidentally and can't find how to delete from xda app. Will delete it from a computer later.

Galaxy S4 & Prolonged Navigation Use

I own a Galaxy S2. I have tried it using for navigation many times only to find that the battery discharges fully within 2 hours even if the phone is connected to a car charger. I used to think may be its because my car charger doesn't provide enough current to maintain the charge. But recently I found out the culprit. After around 20 minutes of use, the phone battery starts heating up, and it stops charging. I verified this with CPU-Z. It clearly shows battery overheated, power supply connected and not charging.
I was wondering if S4 also has similar issue. Has anybody used it for more than 2 hours with Google Navigation continuously while connected to car charger?

The most I have used it for is about an hour and half, and while the phone did heat up, it did continue to keep charging while connected to my in-car charger (just a cheap one). I can't remember whether the charger was able to keep up with the discharge though, I think it did. I was driving in bright sunlight, so I had screen brightness on max throughout that time.

I've found that the USB cable can have a big impact on the charging current. I had the same problem with my car charger not keeping the phone charged, even though I was using a 2A charger. When I changed the USB cable I managed to quadruple the charging current (from 300ma to 1200ma) and solved the problem (I measured the charging current using the Galaxy Charging Current Lite app).

In my case, I believe it was not because of the charging current or cable. I was trying with a car charger capable of charging a laptop, using the wall charger and cable which came with the phone. When the mobile stopped charging, I checked in CPU-Z app. The app was clearly showing status as "power supply connected, not charging and battery overheated". If I unplug the USB cable and connect it back, it will start charging again!
To make sure that I didn't miss anything, I will try with the app you suggested.
Just to update: The Galaxy Charging Current Lite doesn't seem to work with my Galaxy S2. It doesn't show any value.

[Q] How to keep up charging with DashCam app?

Been trying to find a convenient and affordable way to ensure I can charge my beloved S4 in my truck at a rate that can keep up with music streaming, navigation, and/or a dashcam app. It would be nice if it actually charged too, not just kept up.
So far, I have tried these chargers:
2.1A Output Dual USB Car Charger
1 Port USB Car Charger 2.1A
And this cable (note other lengths and right/left angles available):
Red Band Smartphone Quick Charge Cable
I can get just as fast a charging rate according to CurrentWidget as I can with the wall charger at home (1200mA).
Two problems.
One is I can not run Pandora and my Dash Cam App at the same time and still charge. Running the dashcam app alone, it still charges, but i need my music.
Two is how come I see people saying 1900mA? Is currentwidget lying to me? How come, even with the stock charger on an outlet I can't get over 1200mA?
Does anyone have any better suggestions for how to get the most out of car charging, or have I exhausted the best of the best?
P.S. I just ordered one of these to test out. Anyone have any experience with anything like this?

Wireless charging the phone whilst phone is being used

Hello everybody, I have got a wireless in car charging dock and when the phone is in use for example when using satellite navigation or whilst I have Pokemon go on the screen and the screen lit up, the phone discharges. It is charging but at a slower rate than it would be if it wasn't on screen on. I have tried three charging docks and four in car chargers including quick charge chargers and just standard two amp chargers and it still has exactly the same effect. It always seems to charge fine for the first 4 or 5 minutes but then after it takes down to an average use of minus 100 - 200 milliamps. I assume there is a restriction on the phone to reduce heat or something and the only option I have when using the phone whilst in the car, not physically using but rather using the phone to display sat nav etc is to use a cable rather than wireless charging?
It frustrates me that it charges correctly to start with, but then it gets to the point where it is discharging rather than charging. It is much more convenient than having to keep unplugging and plugging in the phone
