Backup Nexus 7 using dd command - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Usually i would make ROM backups using the dd command. i come into a problem when i try to dd the data partition since the sdcard is syslink to /data/media in this device. it wants to pull a 25GB file.
is there any way to omit /data/media from the dd command when backing up /data partition?
thanks.

I don't think so, dd acts independently of the file system and hence isn't able to deal with directories.
Why don't you use nandroid or TiBu?

thanks for the reply.
i dont use nandroid or TiBu because that is a extra step, when loading multiple devices with a rom it can get really time consuming to flash a recovery then copy a backup then run the backup then reflash a stock recovery.
i reason i want to have a userdata.img is so i can unlock the bootloader and flash in fastboot. its by far the quickest solution.
there just has to be a way to unlink /data/media from the partition. then dd the rest.

Just an idea: Maybe you can get a hint by finding out how TWRP manages to wipe /data without /data/media?

i was actually just looking at the source code for CWM and it seem similar to TWRP. they use a archive like Tar. TWRP just calls it .win. and will work directly with the filesystem. but i will check for how they wipe. thanks!

[Recovery] ClockworkMod Recovery 1.3.4(updated 24.06.2011)

OK, here is ClockworkMod Recovery for our beloved A500
NOTE:
If you encounter a problem with the filesystem on /data like it has become corrupt, place a blank file called "eraseData" (without the quotes) in the clockworkmod folder on your external sdcard or usb storage. This will revert back to actually formatting /data.
WARNING: by doing this you will lose everything that you have in /data/media.
Installation:
use adb (PC):
adb push recovery-thor2002ro-rev1.*.img /sdcard
adb push itsmagic /data/local
from terminal (TABLET):
su
chmod 755 /data/local/itsmagic
mount -o rw,remount /system
rm /system/etc/install-recovery.sh
mount -o ro,remount /system
dd if=/sdcard/recovery-thor2002ro-rev1.*.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p1
./data/local/itsmagic
"recovery-thor2002ro-rev1.*.rar" - is for flashing normally with the normal method...
"update-recovery-thor2002ro-rev1.*.zip" - flashed from recovery and press reboot/power off(v1.1 don't use "Advanced" -> "Reboot Recovery" only buttons in the main menu) after its flashed(don't try to flash from any other recovery other than mine, will not work)

additional option in advanced to run itsmagic manually
itsmagic is run on every restart/poweroff or recovery as a precautionary measure
ability to use usb storage in recovery for backups and restores...(has a priority system in place if usb stick is present on mount its used as a "sdcard", if not it falls back to microsd card), unmount and mount will also trigger this.
1.2:
flexrom backup & restore
bct + ebt + pt + gp1 backup(basically the first sectors of the flash that sc2k told you to backup when itsmagic got released...)
retrieve uid
itsmagic run at startup
usb keyboard fix
1.3.2:
fixed background disappearing
removed itsmagic from reboot/poweroff, not needed itsmagic is run at startup...

1.3.3:
fixed back disappearing in Mounts and Storage menu
1.3.4(still in testing...):
added sync before md5 generation
sync and unmount of /sdcard after succesful backup
sync and unmount of /sdcard at reboot/poweroff
Thanks to sc2k for testing this.

o ,I see
"dd" is a command in linux, it can write a img to a partition or block
in this case, we can use that command like this:
dd if=/sdcard/recovery-thor2002ro-rev1.1.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p1

[SCRIPT][HEIMDALL][CWM] Partition Backup

This is a CWM zip which intended purpose is to make creating heimdall one click roms easier.
It will backup partitions using dd and put them in a folder on your internal SD card labeled partition-backup. You can then use these to create heimdall one-click versions of your own rom.
The partitions backed up are as follows:
Captivate Stock based roms:
/system (/dev/block/stl9)
/dbdata (/dev/block/stl10)
/cache (/dev/block/stl11)
kernel (/dev/block/bml7)
modem (/dev/block/bml12)
param.lfs (/dev/block/stl6)
Captivate MIUI/Cyanogenmod based roms:
/system (/dev/block/mtdblock2)
/datadata (/dev/block/mtdblock6)
/cache (/dev/block/mtdblock3)
/radio (/dev/block/mtdblock5)
kernel (/dev/block/mtdblock0)
recovery (/dev/block/mtdblock1)
modem (/dev/block/mtdblock5)
The data partition is not included.
This is not intended to be a backup for your Captivate, although it could be used as one. Again, it's intended for Heimdall rom creation.
For backups, it is preferable to use CWM. I personally, really like the 5.0.2.6 version by mtcarey as it tars up the data rather than dd's the entire partition which saves a lot of space (like the /data partition for example).
DISCLAIMER: I am in no way to be held responsible for what you do to your device. If you use it, whatever the consequences, they are your responsibility.
Now with that being said, this script doesn't do anything destructive but simply copies the partitions to the internal SD card for later use.
Here are the links:
Captivate Stock based - http://db.tt/tPGn42Pi
MIUI/CyanogenMod based - http://db.tt/rwy5WIel
Let me know if you have any issues with the scripts.

I could be wrong on this point but as I understand it the IMEI number is contained there so this isn't probably the best idea.
I could add a separate script for it but I will need to confirm that this wouldn't cause issues for people replicating an IMEI number.
I was thinking of using it as a way to backup an efs.
Understood. I'll put one up later today. In the meantime, you can always copy the folder to your sdcard for safe keeping.
backing up of both EFS and Data, would be nice for PERSONAL backups, make a note not to redistribute efs or data in the heimdall one click packages.
any of your passwords/saved information will be in data..... unless you backup data immediately after flashing/pushing apps BUT before android OS setup...
efs is still a DO NOT DISTRIBUTE.
Tried using partition backup and it didn't make the backup file, or i can't find it.

how long did it take? a while? it should if it did something.
No, just a couple of second.
Edit
Mount system first?
It should take a minute or so to complete. Once done, reboot back into the OS and there should be a folder /sdcard/patition-backup/.
Within this folder you should have multiple images all ending in .rfs. Really they would typically end in .img but I had it save the images using an rfs extention to facilitate things with heimdall as that's what it expects.
What version of Android are you running?
MIUI. 1.11.18 w/Neo 17r18.

Agreed. /data has all your personal data and efs has your IMEI. You don't want to distribute either of these. That is primarily why I left them out of the script. Don't forget you can either copy the entire efs folder or just zip it up and save it somewhere off your phone as a backup. If you are just looking to backup the phone, CWM is much more efficient at backing it up, IMO.

Hmmm... I haven't tested it on either MIUI or Cyanogenmod. They may use a different partioning scheme. Can you please copy/paste the response of typing 'mount' from a shell?
( adb shell, then just simply type 'mount' from there )
How's this
Ok, I see the problem. It appears the MIUI and Cyanogenmod use /dev/block/mtdblock* whereas stock Captivate based roms use /dev/block/mmcblk*.
I'll see about making one for your setup.
Thanks for testing this!
No problem.

Yes, please post this in every 4.2 thread.
They are moved on the drive, as are all files. Recovery's will have to update, it's not the end of the world.
If you need them RIGHT NOW, boot into recovery, adb shell into the device, and go to /data/media/0/TWRP to find your backups. You can copy them to /data/media/TWRP or whatever, that's the absolute path where TWRP is looking.
CWM will be similar, different filenames.
I have no idea what that blog said as it was written by either a robot, a 3rd grader or babelfish.. You decide.

You need a kernel that does not force encryption. I believe ex kernel is an option. I run benzo rom which does not force encryption. Make sure yo backup any data you want to keep. The process should go as follows:
Flash rom
Flash gapps
Flash kernel
Select wipe
Format data
Reboot Recovery
Reboot system

Have you noticed any speed difference after decrypting?
Also is it possible to decrypt using a kernel that doesn't force encryption and then switch to a kernel that may not have that? I would still have to turn encryption on via Settings -> Encrypt is what I'm thinking.

I've seen some testing regarding encrypted vs decrypted, the performance gain is so small it's negligible. If you switch to a kernel that forces encryption, it'll encrypt automatically on boot.

In terms of power consumption, the CPU is processing an extra step for every instruction it has passed to it. I would think that with the inefficient chip the 810 already is that this would impact battery life more than real world opening apps type speed.
I think I'll decrypt to see if I can notice any power differences.
so if i copy all my files to my PC before following these steps, I would still be able to use them afterwards? ie pictures, sounds, images, and titanium backup files? i'm wanting to try benzorom and it sounds like it doesn't get along with encryption very well.

Yeah, as long as you back up everything to your PC you can just transfer them all back to your phone after you do this.
if i do a nandroid backup (from TWRP) of an encrypted system then create backup of /sdcard, wipe userdata than restore /sdcard and restore backup with a non forcing kernel will i get a decrypted device with all data restored?
answering my own question:
- twrp backup data
- copy /sdcard to pc
- fastboot format userdata
- copy from pc to /sdcard
- restore data in twrp
are the needed steps to decrypt without losing any data.
A bit of a necro, so I apologize for that.
@ratson: I am attempting to do exactly what you have mentioned here, although I am not an experienced user. Can I get some clarification on the following:
TWRP backup: Done. It keeps wanting to restrict my permissions on this folder, but I was able to get it off the device (Nexus6p Huawei) and backed up onto my PC.
copy the /sdcard to the PC. Man, what a problem I am having with this. First off, when it gets to a folder called /kick it fails because it says it's not a directory. It does this on some long hex named file that actually isn't a directory, but it seems to want to recognize it as one anyway, and then fail the pull because of this.
So, I cut the entire /kick folder through ES Explorer, and temporarily pasted it into my dropbox. Restarted the adb pull through my shell. It seemed to be working ok, until it got to the TWRP folder. While backing that up (I already did this, but it is still on the device as I only copied it. Should I be deleting this before backing up the rest of the /sdcard?) it fails because it says permission denied when it tries to pull some of the backup files.
At this point I've restarted the pull, and tried different things for several hours. Before I continue to bang my head against the wall, I'd like to get some advice.
How do you pull the /sdcard to your pc? what method? what commands? do you do it from TWRP recovery mode, from the system? Pretend I'm an android toddler (I kind of am). Is there anyway to not start from scratch every time the pull fails? Is there ways to pre-empt the failures?
Once this is complete, when you restore the data, can you please also list the commands for that?
I greatly appreciate your, or anyone elses help to reads this.
Thanks,

I was under the impression that a nandroid backup didnnot include apps, user settings, etc. Otherwise, what is the use of Titanium Backup? Perhaps I'm jist confused.
I'm curious if 7.1 still has a huge performance hit with encrypted partitions.
Anyone know of a good app for checking performance of the data partition? All I've seen is internal/external storage.
Thanks.

Restore Persist.img

After a failed update and some flashing my 4G Connection is gone (sim is locked, no baseband).
Howeever I made a backup of persist.img, modemst1.img and modemst2.img months ago.
Couldn't figure out so far how to restore the files, could someone tell me how to do?
Code:
dd if=/path/to/persist.img*modemst1.img of=/path/to/persist*modemst1-partition
Thanx for the reply, so do I need to do this step 3 Times for all 3 Files?
dd if=/path/to/persist.img*modemst1.img of=/path/to/persist*modemst1-partition
would that mean then for modemst2:
dd if=/path/to/persist.img*modemst2.img of=/path/to/persist*modemst2-partition ???
Do I need another command for the persist.img too?
Sorry for asking, but I don't wanna mess up even more with my persist file.
How did you backup these partitions?
A .img file is a bit to bit copy of a partition or a drive.
Are you sure you have a backup ending with .img? That's very important for the way you restore your backup!!
If you have .img backups then you will restore them like this:
First copy your .img files to /sdcard (internal storage).
persist.img:
Code:
dd if=/sdcard/persist.img of=/dev/block/by-name/persist
modemst1.img
Code:
dd if=/sdcard/modemst1.img of=/dev/block/by-name/modemst1
modemst2.img
Code:
dd if=/sdcard/modemst2.img of=/dev/block/by-name/modemst2
Restart your device!
Thanx for the reply,
My files are definately .img files, I backed them up months ago when starting with the Custom Rom Stuff, too be (hopefully) save.
Backed them up with this 3 commands
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p2 of=/sdcard/modemst1.img
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p3 of=/sdcard/modemst2.img
dd if=/dev/block/mmcblk0p4 of=/sdcard/persist.img
Was long ago so I couldn't remember exactly everything in Detail.
One Question left, setting the Commands while in Bootloader, TWRP or normal in system?

Are you sure you backed up mmcblk0p2/3/4?? Because these partitions are definitively not the persist or modemst ones! If you execute the commands above you will override your partitions with the wrong data!!

Yes backed up with these 3 Commands, found them somewhere in this board.
Had these commands saved on my PC, so definately used them but probably good that I didn't used them yet.
Howeever, I also have a TWRP Backup with EFS and persist files (efs1.emmc.win, efs2emmc.win, persist.ext4.win).
How could I use them, simply via TWRP or better way to do this?
Can't Believe it....
After lots of flashing (Back to Stock etc.) I got my 3G/4G/Baseband Connections back!
Could you tell me the right Commands to backup the Persist/EFS/Modem Parts?
Anyways thank you so much for patiently helping me through this.
Thanx!
Use the TWRP backups. They're perfect!
Did the TWRP Backups now.
In case you know the commands for the img output, i'd still like to know.
I'd like an independent solution, since I had two TWRP Backups each with the EFS/Partition Backup, while 1 of them was somehow not working (error output).
So i'd like to be as secure as possible.
You need the dd command to create an image of each partition. The partitions on your device are numbered consecutively:
persist= /dev/block/mmcblk0p38
modemst1= /dev/block/mmcblk0p34
modemst2= /dev/block/mmcblk0p35
Open a terminal app and type:
for persist:
Code:

Hello, I am having the same problem but only with a backup with no IMEI. Does anyone know how to solve this? Or to merge these two backups to form one with IMEI and stable signal. The backups are encrypted I guess because nothing makes sense in them

TWRP backup of persist and efs
When I made the backup I had no IMEI but the wifi was working (I actuall made the backup after the signal drop issue)

If you don't have a backup of /persist with a IMEI then you won't be able to restore it.

But isn't there a way to edit the backup or merge both backups I have?
(However when I erase modemst1 and 2 IMEI comes back but with the signal drop, a fix for that would also help me)
For the right understanding:
You have two different TWRP backups for /persist and /efs. The first one restores IMEI but signal is lost and the other one restores your signal without IMEI??

I am so sorry I answered this late, yes that is correct and I have been using my phone with WiFi only for months now
Try to merge them manually if you know the corresponding files. I've no idea how to figure them out...
TWRP won't merge your backups.
