Best ROM for gaming - Nexus 7 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I want to know which ROM is best for gaming: stock, CM, AOSP, or Custom? On stock 4.4.4 or 5.0.0 Real Racing 3 is very very bad, almost un-playable. On CM11 RR3 runs pretty decent. I really don't care the advantages of a newer ROM, I only want to run smoothly RR3 on a Nexus 7 Wi-Fi 2012. Thanks!

Based on guesswork but I would say Dorimanx. CM7, 1.6GHz kernel, zRam etc. so it is possibly the fastest ROM (although I haven't actually used it, but statistically, it should be the best gaming ROM). However, no ROM will be smooth enough for games such as GTA which are extremely high end.
From today fastest ROM for gaming is this ICS CM9 with hardware acceleration
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1622788
In nex few days you can expect more ICS roms with Hardware Acceleration.
This roms easily beats any Gingerbread ROM. Im playing ShadowGun completely smooth with no lag. Its impressively fluid. And it was almost unplayable on Gingerbread roms. You can even play Modern Combat 3 on this ROM.
Only problem is there are bugs in this ROM and it still needs development and tweaking. But when its finished it will bring HD2 to completely new level.
i would say dorimax
cm9 beta1 leo +1
Typhoon CM7
Typhoon CM7,the purpose of this build is to port the latest stock CyanogenMod 7 Desire (bravo) base to HD2 with the minimal amount of changes required with no custom apps. Keep in mind that this is my personal build and I am sharing it with you.

[Q] does the galaxy s4 really lags or is there a fix?

I am deciding on whether to buy an s4 or an xperia z1 ... I have watched gaming videos of the s4 and some games seem to lag (e.g. san andreas) while they work fine on the z1... And i read people complaining that the s4 is indeed laggy, not just games but in touchwiz and transition animations also.... are there fixes/updates that solve this 'lagginess' or is it still present till now?
lag in TW roms is a must...hehe, all TW roms lags, some lags more and some less, there will always be a tiny little of lag...sadly, about gaming its not TW problem, its more of optimizing the games for the cpu and gpu, if you look at galaxy s2 and s3 they plays gta sa without lag, but in S4 it lags a lot.....
is it the same thing on the exynos version? it's strange, galaxy s4 being the most popular smartphone at the time did not get optimized versions of games.
yes, its in every version, i my self have i9500 and even with TW custom roms it lags, cm based roms are a lot better in terms of speed, but they have some bugs so its not the best solution, miui rom is very good but they don't support it anymore, maybe later they will be back, i have TW based custom rom and i get angry when i want to use the phone quickly but don't have the needed speed......in the beginning of the next year i will be buying a new phone but its a bit of problem for me, i really want to have the NOTE 4, but i know that it will lag like the S4.....
I understand it lags in touchwiz interface but it does lag in games at well? the exynos version?
Lags
I got a S4 with a custom kernel. No lags so far, I got the International Variant, the GT-I9505 with the latest Firmware from Samsung. I debloated it by myself so maybe that could be the reason why it don't lags. My Ram is around 800MB when I use it normal. Greetings
it lags in games not because of TW, its because of bad optimization for the cpu and gpu....maybe if you flash cm based rom it will lag a bit less but still don't think for a second that its going to be smooth, its not only S4 problem, htc one m7 also have the same problem....and many more, for gaming you have to get an iphone......sadly....

Use this Xposed module:

This will probably fix your lag (only for TW). From what I read CM/AOSP roms also have better performance.

No it's probably because you have a custom kernel where the tweak is already applied.

Well than he can also flash a custom kernel. I can give him a link
No lag
I'm using stock 4.4.2 NG8 [open Europe] and there is no lag ever
lagged with me once but i found that an apk called [Galaxy Locker] causes this lag, the battery is kind of good and the overheating is almost fixed
while playing huge games Like [Modern Combat 5,Iron man, Assassin Creed Pirates] or even browsing.the max temperature my cell phone reached was 36.2 *C and it's great, while recharging it's only 31.2 *C
can't say much tw rom is full of bloatware..debloat the rom and you get smooth TW rom

Nexus 10 is laggy...

Hi together!
I own my Nexus 10 since March 2013. Everything worked fine for me (i was always on the latest Stock Rom - did no reset etc.).
Well, by the time i noticed that the nexus has become a bit slow and laggy. Especially since I got a Nexus 5 which is just fast without any lag since christmas last year. Everything is also on stock there...
Last week I had enough and I did a factory reset. Well, compared to the Nexus 5 it still feels laggy. Every click takes a some time before something happens. It's not that bad that I couldn't use it, but it is a bit disturbing.
Main question 1: Guys, am i just confused because my Nexus 5 is that smooth, or is the Nexus 10 just simply old and too weak for KitKat.
I know, i could use some custom roms. But i am totaly ok with the Stock rom. I like it, as it is! So i don't urgently need a custom rom.
Main question 2: What possibilities do I have, to make the stock rom a little bit more smooth?
Thanks for your tips!
I've noticed that the performance seems to have slipped a bit since KitKat. Maybe its just me, but some of the 4.2.2 ROMs here were very smooth (though they are sadly discontinued now). There are still a handful of solid roms for kitkat. I haven't been on a stock ROM since the day I bought my Nexus 10 so I can't comment on stock.
You sound pretty firm about not flashing a custom ROM but I would urge you to reconsider for the boost in performance--not to mention added features. Aside from that you could try a custom kernel or various tweaks. There are some mods here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/software-hacking that add a little boost through scripts like zipalign, better memory management, etc. That's about all you can do.

I agree with ^^^^^^. Custom roms + overclock would be your best friend for an aging device. When you are used to the speed of a faster device like the nexus 5, the nexus 10 will just naturally feel slower (which it is). There is really not much you can do if you insist on staying stock. For me, I'm using mrrobinson's 4.3.1 buttered AOKP with Manta kernel, OC CPU to 1900mhz, set touchboost to cpu 1500mhz and gpu 533mhz. The device feels noticeably faster than stock, but of course it will never be as smooth/fast as your nexus 5.
Hi!
Thanks for your answers and for the confirmation of my perception.
I just don't have the time for testing so many roms, but maybe i will try one or two...
I also thought maybe I could change the CPU Govenor of Stock or Overclock it...
Well, however - it's a two year old device - that's tech live!

I run 4.4.4 on my N10 with no appreciable amount of lag.
I run Slim Rom.
I don't overclock, mod kernels, etc.
This tablet doesn't need any of that.
I do run Greenify, Ad Away, and Autostarts. This keeps my tablet as snappy as the day I loaded the ROM.
Run any ROM for a while and it starts to lag. Root allows you to correct the issue.
I find it really lags when apps are updating, or when restoring apps. I never considered my Note 2 fast but it handles all of these tasks with barely a whimper. Guess # of cores is important.
Its time for a new tablet soon, but not really sure what I'm going to go with. I want to get away from Samsung's physical/capacitive buttons, but also want high res and speed.
Holy crap mine started lagging out of the blue about a week ago. I'm going to take this as a sign that a new nexus 10 is coming and google wants us to upgrade!
My Nexus 5 has really spoiled me as far as smoothness. I'm on slimkat on my Nexus 10 but I'll be trying a 4.2.2 rom to see if there is a difference as some threads around here say.
As far as KitKat Roms go, I find Liquidsmooth to be very snappy (however the YouTube app crashes are a deal breaker for making it my daily driver )
Probably the smoothest ROM I've ever run was Sabermod 4.2.2: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2292927
Also the early Eos 4.2.2 ROMs were really good too. They also had tablet mode or left-aligned navigation buttons.
There are plenty other good ones but that's just my two cents.
My advice would be to run the 'performance' CPU scheduler, which locks the CPU at 1.7ghz. Makes quite a big difference, and the impact on battery life is minor. :good:
I've installed AOKP 4.3.3 and so far it's way smoother than KK. In going to try Eos 4.2.2 and see how it does.
The nexus 10 is not too weak for kitkat
I find that Nexus 10 on KitKat with a custom rom and kernel runs very smooth and fluid (at least as fluid as nexus 4 which is very good).
Personally I run official Omnirom 4.4.4 with franco kernel r16. I have also flashed bionic and dalvik optimized libraries which are actually intended for qualcomm devices - but by some magic work well on my nexus 10 and improve performance in benchmarks by as much as 20%! And browser and interface feels much smoother after flashing these library patches.
You can download them in this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/google-nexus-5/general/mod-dalvik-bionic-library-optimization-t2537299
I flashed the Z2 bionic and the Moto X 4.4.2 dalvik files. (They work on 4.4.4). Flash patches before flashing custom kernel. (download 4.4.4 KTU84P stock library also and flash in case you get a bootloop after flashing the optimized libraries)

Marshmallow vs Lollipop Performance

Hi, well i need to know user experiencies about MM roms on Note 5 because lets take for example GTA Liberty City Stories, un Lollipop the game is full playable no lag at all but on Marshmallow the game lags and stutters like if the Note 5 were a Galaxy S3, i'm running Decent ROM and SkyHigh kernel and i want to know if this is normal or can you recommend me another ROM for gaming, or you think that LP is better for gaming than MM?

Well, many ROMS around are done in amazing way... the best idea is to try each of them for like 5-7 days and pick a choice urself.. Some ROMs rock if u are a gamer type, some are well optimized for daily messages/calls/browsing with fine battery life... Some of them u won't like after 2hours of usage, it happens, so...
All I know for sure is that theres no the best rom, at first I didn't belive, but if u try them out, u will see...

well, the problem is that i am not a gamer at all, but i read long time ago that people had a great expirience with these roms:
TW based: imperium, wiz cyan
AOSP: pick any, all of them are mostly fast as a rockets
depends on what u like
and u can check shark jungle profile on youtube, he describes almost all ROMs...

Ressurection has many modification and customization, but i faced a little worst battery life than jdct one .... test both and see urself bro
stef_zii says rigth.
For me:
Give a Shot these -> JDCTeam(AOSP or LOS based) - LineageOS(LOS based) - Wizcyan(TW based) - SuperTW(TW based)
These are mostly known and good ones. RR has some (actually so much) bugs and Devs don't fix them, but you can try it.
Tw roms based Android 5 or 4 and some of them using Samsung galaxy S5-6-7-8 or Note4-5-7 framework that looks like these devices, but not same.
On the other hand AOSP&LOS based roms are pretty nice designed and looks cool. Substratum is a world that you can change mostly everything in your phone. Stability and daily speed better but i don't know if gaming speed good or not(i don't play games, just sometimes little games). But you couldn't feel any lag at heavy games like GTA San Andreas (at medium or medium-high settings), Asphalt 8, NFS, or others..
And at AOSP&LOS based roms, try Android 6-7 and 8(still beta in AOSP but LOS is optimazed, still not fully trust).
Edit: Forgot to say that, camera in TW roms gives better quality than others because of Samsung's tricks.. But enough for me at daily usage & Stability & Style/Design better at AOSP&LOS based roms for me.
So, if you have any question, i'll be here. But mostly, you need to try many of roms.

Thanks! i was actually thinking of just installing Google Play Edition 5.1, it looks fast and perfect for what i want, also as i'm not installing a newer version of android, which would slightly slow down the device with only lags here and there. While having S4 at 5.1 will possibly give really good performance?
is it stable?
how about performance?
maybe daily driver?

Actuay, i tried both GPE Android 4.4.4 and 5.1, but i don't remember 5.1. GPE 4.4.4 really nice and still it gives best performance for daily usage, but has a little bug which so many videos at youtube lags.
Don't forget that you need a custom kernel for both. Because random reboots broke everything if you use it at stock kernel(as i remember).
Google made a good job even at S4.
I know daily usage at 5.1 but not for long time, it was a few days before random reboots(i want a advanture with stock kernel), so actually it was really good. But as you probably know that Android 5.1 will always have some bad stuffs about structer of itself. Just give a shot for both.. (Camera still can't be reach to TW based roms quality)

Hi This is exactly what I was looking for. My sister's phone got stolen. No money to buy a new one yet. I gave her my old S4 i9505 to use but I am afraid she might find it a little to slow from what she is used to. I had mine rooted so I am trying to find a good Rom for her. She is not a gamer though. All I need is Rom that allows her S4 to have a great battery life, is fast and stable... Oh and it would even better if it was above Android 5.0... Android 5.1 or above would be great or.... A rom that only looks as if it was above 5.0.
Any recommendations? Please help. Thank u in advance.
