[Q] Those still in 4.2.2 JB - G2 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Quick question: do people who say they are still rocking JB, you mean 100% stock from kdz or a custom 4.2.2 stock JB rom?
All JB threads are more or less dead so just wondering
Thanks

I went back to 11a jb stock recently because the 4g signal strength is so much better. Battery life isn't as good and of course I give up some kit kat apps and minor app improvements I which i don't care about but i can use my phone in more on 4g in so many more areas. It seems every brings poorer 4g signal strength.

[Q] N4 with 4.3 update .84 radio changes

I'm running a Nexus 4 with a stock 4.3 ROM and the .84 radio, and I was wondering if others noticed the same behavior I am seeing on my device.
When I go into a terribly low signal area, e.g. underground parking garage, behind a thick concrete wall, I noticed my N4 will switch almost immediately to looking for an EDGE signal instead of HSPA, etc.
My phone never did this on earlier ROMs, but this usually left me without any signal/service when the HSPA network was non-existent.
It definitely seems to have improved the connectivity when strong signals are impeded by buildings, etc. in more urban areas.
Has anyone noticed similar behavior in their N4?
Has anyone noticed other things about the upgraded .84 radio that are better, worse, or different?
Anyone know where there is a .84 changelog, by chance?
Thanks everyone!
Seems like great news, I just replied to this (before coming here):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2407581
And OP said something similar to that, although he didn't mention any radio specifics, only about stock 4.3.
Can I ask you where I can find more about this radio mod? Or is it the default for stock 4.3?

Just using the stock radio that came with 4.3, 0.84.
I downloaded the "early" leak of the 4.3 release for the N4, and noticed it had radio 0.83.
Since the stock 4.3 ROM came with 0.84, I'm even more curious to see an official changelog of the radio versions.
Thanks for the link, reading the thread now

[Q] Upgrading to GS4 from Epic 4G Touch? (GS2)

Hey Everyone,
Okay.. getting ready to upgrade my GS2 to GS4, but have a couple of quick questions.
1. I read that the GS4 was laggy when it first came out. Has Sprint fixed that in the stock ROM? Or does sac's rom fix it?
2. I read remember reading something about a camera issue on the purple GS4. Is there still an issue with that?
Thanks,
EB
It's kinda laggy still with the latest official rom. Many people might disagree with that statement. The more apps you install, the more lag it gets. My opinion is, the biggest improvement you will notice is the screen size and much higher resolution. If you have 4g LTE in your area, you should notice much higher online speeds when compared to 4g wimax. Other than that, IMO, the other improvements are negligible. A stock battery will last longer on a s4 than the s2. I've only ran stock roms so I can't give you any opinions on them.
No lag on this phone but when I try different kernels I sometime get lag but when I go back to stock kernel I have no issuses. That's my experience with this phone I came from the s3

NO lag whatsoever for me. My phone is ripping fast. Have unbelieveable GPS (which I sorely lackes on my Epic 4GT). Have stupendous LTE (when I get it) and everything just works.
I have tried most of the ROMs here (Sac's and Triforce are great!). But I need my phone to 100% funtional for work so I'm usually on a stock (or slightly modded) TW ROM.
While my battery life is great (often over 24hours with about 50% of that screen time), I am not a battery life thumper - it's 2013 folks and you have a $500+ device; buy another damn charger or battery. I prefer stability, speed and smoothness; in that order.
There are a few really polished TW ROMs here and also some AOSP/CM variants that are really comming along. My only issues with the latter have been problems with GPS and sometimes even data - both of which I rely on heavily during my work days.
This phone, being a sammy is very similar to the e4gt. If you spend some time going through all the posts you will very quickly pick up on some of the differences. Biggest being that on this device the boot, recovery and kernal are all seperate images. So you kernel doesn't have to be 'wrapped' in a recovery, you can mix and match to your liking.
Jump in and have some fun.
Good luck.

I recently made the same upgrade you're considering. While I loved my old E4GT the improvements in the GS4 are amazing and I love it. With that said it's not without it's issues, the lag you spoke of earlier is there sometimes it's not unbearable, but I definitely feel like Touchwiz is holding the hardware back (nothing the official CM wont fix!) battery life is fantastic, especially with Sacs rom. I get 20+ hours on a full charge, with heavy use it's more like <15. GPS locks fast, much faster than the Epic Touch and the screen is light years better.
I do notice this phone gets quite a bit warmer during regular use than the E4GT (which barely got warm, except for specific situations) but it's much better with Sacs rom than on stock.
All and all, you'll be happy with the upgrade and will not regret it.
Thanks for the info guys. I wiped my E4GT and put a tweaked stock on it (was CM10) and it actually fixed the GPS issues.. but now the phone reboots itself all the time and freezes and completely freaks out when i plug in my car charger... lol.. So this is a good excuse to upgrade..

I upgraded from an S2 to the S4 at the beginning of the summer. I mostly ran CM/AOKP based ROMS (usually BeanStalk or one of it's variants) on my S2, but after reading so many positive comments on the S4 forum about TW/Stock performance, I held off on flashing CM/AOKP and have been a very happy camper running Highway55's MF9 TW-based rom which I highly recommend (see my detailed post on the Highway55 rom thread that describes my basic configuration).
I don't notice any lag, and battery life has remarkably been improved over the S2. I hate to be tethered, so I always buy an extra battery. With my S2, I would swap my battery two or three times a day (I'm a heavy user), but with S4's remarkably improved battery peformance, I swap my battery maybe once or twice a week. GPS just works period. LTE is amazingly fast. This phone rocks!

WiFi usage

Hey there Xda people.
I dont know if this was already answered (i searched and found nothing). Why the WiFi signal is poor on EVERY custom rom?. I know that the developers makes its best with his custom roms and I love that, but why the WiFi is horrible in custom roms that in stock?
I've actually experienced significant better WiFi reception on CM10.1 than on Stock 4.1.2
EX. With CM, I'm able to receive a signal on my deck, with good speeds as well, while I simply cannot receive a signal on stock.
Does anyone else experience this?

One of the updates that Verizon made to Stock was increase the range of the Wifi. Maybe you didnt install that update while using stock.
The reason stock runs better... Well... Sometimes runs better... Is because the kernel is being developed by people with more inside access than any custom ROM dev could ever have (with the exception of that whole Oppo+CM thing...), and they're getting paid to work 8 hours a day to develop it well. Since the ROM devs don't have access to the inside kernel data, they basically have to make a graceful hack. Which sometimes doesn't work well. FWIW, I have perfectly fine WiFi access on custom ROMs, not enough of a difference to notice.

My WiFi has been better on 4.3 over stock. Gaming is a huge improvement over stock. I will never go back.

Install PA KITKAT 4.4 on D802 LG 2? Good Idea?

Install PA KITKAT 4.4 on D802 LG 2? Good Idea? or stay on stock?
How KITKAT will improve performance when I open many web/apps same time? on stock/modified stock it start to lag... on KITKAT it will be much better?
Thanks!

Worse network connection post Kitkat Upgrade

I just upgraded to [ROM]KOT49H【4.4.2】AOSP official Google Edition (AOSP Features)
Everything seems to work really well so far, and i love the feel of the ROM. However, i get the sense that my phone is dropping its signal much more than my old Android 4.3 build, and also that the signal strength both at home and at the office is quite a bit worse than in my old build.
Is this possible, and is there a way to try to improve the network connectivity?
Thanks!!
