Another sharpening effect fix... Worked for me - G3 General

I'm not debating about whether there's a sharpening effect on texts on all G3s or not... But it's definitely noticeable on mine. So for those who also feel this way, I hope this works for you too.
I basically stumbled on this. it worked for Me but YMMV. I used iFont to change the phone's font, and then set the font to restore back to default font, but set the new font as the default font. After rebooting and everything, all the new fonts do not register the sharpening effect anymore. I have to be honest, I'm not sure if it's just the applying of a new font, or the setting of the new font as default that made the difference (I think it's the latter), but now my text is ultra sharp. Hope this helps some of you. And if it actually does work for others as well, please share it - because for me the sharpening effect was very obvious and annoying.
Just wanted to open a thread on this because it's the only thing that has fixed this problem on my G3 and hoping it might work and benefit a few of you.

Can you give us a picture of the result

I've been trying use ifont but it I saying my connection isn't good enough lol LTE.... Guess I'll try WiFi later ....

Just a warning, I've heard some people get bootloops with iFont, so be careful, backup, etc. No problems for me as I've tried several different fonts so far.
Here are a few screenshots of text on my G3 now... unfortunately I don't have a before shot, since I can no longer revert back to the original font.

Screenshots wont show the sharpening...
Tried it and absolutely no effect on sharpening.
Can you detail step by step what you did? and take a photo of your screen for proof please

Some fonts look better with the effect that others, but the effect is still there, this does nothing.

like i said, worked for me but it seems like it's not working for others. Just sharing my experience...not a huge hassle to try it anyway if you find the text effect to be annoying.

It seems the Ubuntu font is doing great over here. The sharpening is less intrussive. Thnx for the tip!

Its not working for you, its just making it less obvious because the font doesant look so bad with the sharpening. Ive been using an alternative font for months now using this method, and it helps, but it doesn't remove the effect. You can still see it on other UI elements.

I've never noticed any over sharpening on my screen. Not saying it doesn't exist, just that it may not occur on every device. That being said, I do think this whole thing has been blown out of proportion as I have compared several G3s to other devices side-by-side and have yet to notice anything bothersome.

People are not alike. The AS is absolutely horrific, depending on the size/thickness/color of the font.

It occurs on every device. It's built into the device. What does change from device to device is the color schemes used. It is much more noticeable with some font / background color combos than others. I think it's probably also less noticeable the less acute one's vision is.

X1 - New Firmware

I am so proud of Sony Ericsson.
You know... Half of the company is from Sweden, where I live!!!
I just updated the phone to the new firmware. And I am almost shivering from proudness.
In ONLY FOUR MONTHS Sony Ericsson managed to make the Opera browser the default web browser on the phone. I can't believe how incredibly good they are!!!
I haven't notice anything else though, but oh my god... Isn't this more than enough to accomplish in ONLY FOUR MONTHS?
Anyone complaining on Sony Ericssson have to answer before me. I absolutely adore them. They are unbelievably good.
Anyone... Please don't tell me they managed to do anything else. I don't think I could take it. Making Opera the default browser almost made me faint. If you say something else was fixed too, I think I will die.

Cynic enough???
Here's what has changed:
Here are some things that have been noticed so far with this update.
The device now boots faster.
Faster menus - switching tabs in settings is quicker.
Programs launch quicker and file explorer is quick in loading folders.
The Vodafone ROM update (not sure if others have this) includes a couple of other additional trial games including Bubble Bash, Block Breaker Deluxe, and Tetris Mania.
Bluetooth Problem reported to be fixed. (I didn’t face any bluetooth problems with the old software and am not facing any now.)
Wi-Fi bug fixed.
Panel animation is a bit smoother but still laggy on switching from portrait to landscape and vice versa. Overall a faster panels experience.
Video playback has improved a lot! CP benchmark on a video resulted in 90-92% on the old ROM and is now increased to 98%.
Word prediction in most text-boxes.
Media Panel improvements including; music indexing is a lot faster, image scrolling is almost as smooth as it should be, changing tracks show information about the track at the bottom of the screen, and most importantly it now only shows pictures from the My Pictures and Camera folders on the main and internal storage – say goodbye to all those images from program files and windows showing up.
Camera improvements include faster focus lock and more stable focus. Preview is also smoother and introduces a new setting letting you define the frame rate to use for the video to shoot.
Furthermore, I think they updated the 3D drivers too. TouchFlo 3D is running way smooth - especially the Pictures and Media tabs! (flicking through pictures and music is quick and smooth) + Slide2Play is performing much better with this new updated ROM; quicker and smoother movement in landscape, switches album/song images correctly on song change, and so on.

initially when i just flashed the new firmware it was noticeably faster. boots faster and faster file system. used to take 8 secs to open /windows folder and after flash took just 2 secs!
but now after reinstalling my apps, the file system speed has decreased back to that of the old firmware. still boots faster tho.
i have reported that my x1 is very fast but i dont have new firmware installed yet..
i want to ask you how to install the new ROM? i got the new ROM from the pavel and download it in rapid share.

I see the framrate option. But I can't confirm it really works. As a matter of fact, I even don't know what to expect. I didn't get 30 fps before, and I'm sceptic I will get it now. But of course I may be wrong here.

Again, I can't tell the difference. I doubt Sony Ericsson had in mind that you should use TF3D. So the possbible improvements in using TF3D is irrelevelant to me. Maybe it's faster for other applications using 3D, but I haven't tried them yet and thus can't tell.
One of the most annoying bugs is not fixed.
That does not apply to you using english keyboard. But for me, using the swedish letters Å, Ä and Ö it does.
Those keys seems to be implemented after all "normal" keys. So where all other keys seems to get into a keyboard buffer when you type them, the special swedish characters are written immediately to the screen. That means when I write a swedish sentence that should look like "Jag ska försöka träffa dig innan mötet." instead looks lite "Jag skaö fröska ätrffa dig innaön mtet."
That is, in my opinion a HUGE bug, which they should have focused on before doing anything else.
Regards,
Michael

Yes of course I did. October 24 I mailed them about this problem.
Should have been enough time for anyone with some competence to fix it.
EDIT:
As a matter of fact I've mailed SE 24-25 mails on different matters on the phone. Most of them might be specific to the operating system which SE has no control over, but for me as a customer that really doesn't matter. But the response I've got was just that, freely translated from swedish: "SE has no direct control over the issues since that is a Windows Mobile specific matter".
They even told me that about the Radio Panel.
Do you understand why I am a bit upset?
I like the phone even though it still has some issues, but I really can't stand Sony Ericssons ignorance.

Oh, and by the way...
Why should people even have to "notice" differences between firmwares?
We should be informed about the changes without having to guess what's fixed, and what's not.
It is our equipment, and it's our time and efforts we put in it to try to see if we get any improvments. We shouldn't have to do that. SE should give us information on what is done so we could decide for ourselves if the update might be needed or not.

As for the biggest BUG you are facing, i can't say much about that - since it doesn't realy apply to me, as you too pointed out. But maybe you should try flashing on a non-Swedish ROM and see how that goes? For definitely all the points i highlighted are pretty much what i saw - with both the Vodafone as well as the Generic UK ROMs.
FYI - when i say that they probably updated the 3D drivers... i'm not just talking about TF3D (i use that as an example 'coz it was usually buggy before this firmware), but games are actually running as they should have done before. No glitches or problems with Atomic Cannon, Archibald's Adventures, and more games that faced usual lags or slowed down a bit in menus or something like that. Furthermore, Slide2Play is also working way better with this updated firmware.
the framerate option on the camera is great and actually works. The media panel has been improved a lot! The bluetooh and wifi issues have definitely been fixed... and the device startup time has been improved too, way quicker now.
55 Seconds?!?!?! - i barely got that with my old firmware! Maybe it is the Swedish ROM? Definitely try out the Generic UK or Vodafone UK ROM for a few days...
Best Regards.

I use the Swedish updated ROM, and I, as other swedes with updated phones I've talked to, don't feel any improvements with the new ROM. In fact, the phone seems to be slower when using SPB Mobile Shell: When clicking programs, it takes some time before the icons appear. Same time when sliding into the second page of programs. [Q] Pixel Quality? Error?

So quick question XDA. I noticed on my HD2 running FroyoStone 3.2 the pixel quality is bad...I wouldn't even say "pixel" cause its just the textures on some things. Thats not the only thing that has bad quality. When I receive picture messages all the pictures are really bad quality. Also the pictures set for each one my contacts are bad quality. Is this something I can fix? Please and thank you.
If you really see what we can see on the pictures, then a a fix is available.

The pictures are really bad. Maybe you should take a look in the manual of the camera and search for "focus" or "autofocus"

Also I took the first picture with my moms phone, i sent it to my HD2 without changing the file size. When I received it on my phone it was sent as a 4 KB file and which is a really small size. It does this to EVERY picture I receive. Yet its only when im running android (FroyoStone 3.2)

I think I worked out what you're saying OP. I just checked mine and it's exactly the same. It's probably due to the 65k colour screen as opposed to 16million colour screens most phones have these days. It's nothing to worry about.

That's what we think. I don't think anybody has been able to prove/disprove that the HD2's screen is only capable of 65k colors; it could just be a WM limitation, and the devs have yet to 'unlock' the 16mil colors using Android. (Of course, I could be wrong, but like I said there's no proof.)
The problem is the color gradient -- it's easy to detect the low quality of the images due to the gray gradient.
Concerning the MMS sizing, I think I encountered a fix for that, but I haven't tried it. I can't help you look for it now because the sub-forum search is down.

Screen is damn bright!

Screen is a bit too bright for me even on the lowest settting. I remember reading about an app that let's us knock the brightness below the minimum level, ideal for night reading by all accounts.
Can anyone tell me what this app is called? Does it need root?
Thanks.
No root necessary.

Thanks I will give that a go ... not to keen on this bit though :

Is this the only one available so far?
It's just buggy. It will "turn off" by itself, and yes mostly when you switch to Gmail. Gets the job done though.

i don't have this issue. i keep mine on about 40%
Once the devs start doing custom kernels, we'll get one that can go dimmer. Supercurio, the VooDoo lag-fix guy for the i9000 and other Galaxy S versions is big on color correction and gamma and all of that. One of his early fixes including making it less bright on minimum. He's looking to get a Nexus S, once he does we'll see lots of good stuff.
Meanwhile, even without one, he's chugging out lots of stuff for the NS community. Big fan of his work.

Power Consumption vs. Screen Density

I'm in the middle of doing a major 'power overhaul' and was wondering if scaling the screen density from 240 to 160 would hurt/help my quest.
Attached is the basic density, and of course i try to keep dark colors or white on black themes. Obviously not done yet.
I will say this... In my experience, on my own phones and others (many others at work I have rooted), that task killer will drain you worse than anything.

I tweaked my build.prop file to reflect 160 density, and haven't noticed any significant battery save.
However (as noted in a previous post), changing the density in our build.prop files as of now seems to cause all sorts of clusterf*** with many HTC apps (people, calculator, mail, footprints, peep). I haven't figured out why that is, and for now I've just replaced them w/ 3rd party apps because I can do without them for the sake of having the LCD density I want lol.
Hopefully one of us lands on the answer of how to mod the build.prop w/o causing numerous HTC FC's in the process.
Agreed with the HTC apps, I went 3rd party too. Most have similar (if not better) functionality. Thanks for actually getting back about my op.

BTW, I tested out 140-180 densities, and 170 seems to perform the best on our phones in terms of widget responsiveness, while maintaining a clean pixelation. I also keep the brightness @ a cool 20% (unless i'm in bright sunlight). No complaints so far.
Oh, and "contapps" from the Market = what the HTC "People" app should be. Check it out.

I actually found a thread the other night talking about contapps so i got it and read some reviews on appbrain, just so happened to be fiddling with it all day.

Let's figure out how to remove the sharpening.

So I saw this in the build prop
"qualcomm sensors enable
#
# LGE CHANGE_S, 2013-10-29, [email protected]
# below sensor is default true by HAL source.
#ro.qualcomm.sensors.qmd=true
#ro.qc.sdk.sensors.gestures=true
#ro.qualcomm.sensors.pedometer=true
#ro.qc.sensors.step_detector=true
#ro.qc.sensors.step_counter=true
#ro.qualcomm.sensors.pam=true
#ro.qualcomm.sensors.scrn_ortn=true
#ro.qualcomm.sensors.smd=true
#ro.qualcomm.sensors.game_rv=true
#ro.qualcomm.sensors.georv=true
# LGE CHANGE_E, 2013-10-29, [email protected]"
Not sure if anything there can help, but I know that the sharpening is applied when there's something light on a dark background or vice versa and also if you have any type of floating menu it'll sharpen everything in the background.
Samsung does this as well but as far as I know only in multi window mode.
Its not a screen issue as its not always apparent. And as far as I know the oppo find 7 has the same panel and doesn't exhibit these effects.
So anyone have any ideas?
Kernel related ?
Display drivers?
Maybe we should all email lg and ask them for an option to remove it.
Just fyi oppo use japan display inc panel while lg use their own panel
I think the only way to defeat the sharpening is with a custom kernel and possibly an app to tweak the display unless LG of course turn this 'feature' off in the future themselves via an OTA update.

Hope they do. Its pointless.
So anyways I came across another thing.
If you tune the display with a kernel app as in colors. If you tune all the colors down and make the colors darker and such, everything will have the sharpening applied. So it seems like the software sees that and applies it to everything.
Hoping it's just kernel

I am just guessing as I am not a developer by any shape of the imagination but this sounds like it's built into the OS so possibly a tweak to prevent this behaviour from getting triggered which will turn off the sharpening effect.

Yes I think so. If someone can baksmali the ROM maybe they can find something. Id get in touch with a Dev but as this time it seems like no one owns the device.

When it finally rolls out to the USA then I think it will get better dev support.
I'll have the device soon, but I'm not sure we're able to turn it off since it may be the part of the driver. Haven't done it yet, but if we can debug the running code and binary patch the trigger effect into not signaling, we may fix it. If it IS a trigger at all; e.g. we should find when it does signal the driver/gpu to apply sharpening and just switch code from JE to JNE or similar to kill the trigger and never apply it.
Theoretically.
Hopefully LG can turn it off and not a hardware combo issue with the 801 and this particular display tech.
It can be turned off. They purposely added it

I wonder if anyone knows the purpose. Because any sane person would turn it off after seeing it in action.

The purpose is either, they want to emphasize the need for it so they make things extra sharp over 1080p not realizing it actually looks worse when its sharpened. Or its because the contrast ratio is low so to do that they sharpened it in areas where it would be more noticeable to make it more legible. Again, doesn't really help.
On the galaxy phones it would produce this on multi window mode as stated and when putting a cm ROM on it you wouldn't get any of that since there's no window mode. But... If you go into screen settings and change the screen aliasing type or whatever, if you change from standard to reading mode it would make the display sharp exactly like we see on this one. So once we get kernel support for screen modes (cm adds modes such as movie mode and sharpness ect) then we should be fine.

Well, I don't believe a whole bunch of smart engineers, designers and such in dev and QA would not notice it sucks...
And for screen modes, after so much hassle, I hope and expect LG is preparing us a "turn bloody thing off" setting...
Well once it comes out in the states I will be contacting some devs about it. We need a boot loader unlock as well though

Without seeing it in person, it probably was added to make their simple UI have more of a pop to it. They were probably trying to make it stand out more in stores, like how tvs usually have horrible settings when on display at a store.

They're dumb because it makes it look worse. In almost positive a fix will be found. If anything maybe the carrier releases will have this fixed already.
Guess what...
I installed bravia engine v3 from Android Tweaker 2 and...
I think my display is more clear and the sharpening is slightly gone!
You guys better try it and tell your impression

Lol. If an update to remove this isn't out in the next couple weeks. Bye bye G3
