[Q] comics - Nook Touch General

Not sure if I'm allowed to post this here - if not please accept my apologies and direct me to the correct thread. But basically, I've got a NST and am hoping to read some comics on it. I've loaded some basic colored comics and tried to read them on the e-ink screen with mixed results so I'm wondering if anyone has any recommendations for (non-manga) comic book titles I can check out that look good on e-ink?
Thanks in advance!

This is the exact place for you to post this question, so don't you worry about that.
I don't generally read comics, but I have read one on my Nook before that displayed pretty well. It was called "The Girl Who Owned A City". Google it.

You might try increasing the contrast / converting it to grayscale on a computer before loading it on the nook.
Although you could only easily do that if its in image format.

Gifs

Please someone reply to this post i'm basically half dead searching and searching on answers and can not seem to find them. Well I just today unlocked my htc 8125 and have been messing around adding things and seemed successful; however I do not know why I can not have gifs display and function (move) properly. Is there anything I can do to have it move and work right without having it play in some player like windows media?
Thanks I will appreciate whatever advice offered.
any ideas?
Well I tried seeing if saving it throw photobucket online to my phone would work and it did for a while it said htc gif and it showed the gif being displayed but when i closed it and tried to access the gif it didnt move or do anything and stayed at a single frame.

If you post your problem, many "experts" can help you and maybe others will benefit from the advice. There is something inherently selfish about asking for private help in a public forum.
Welcome to the forum!
This forum is meant to be a community where everyone helps, everyone is helped and everyone learns something in the process. It is not really a place to find your own private tech support.
We all enjoy helping each other. Post your problem and it is likely that many people will contribute. That way other people will also benefit in the future if they experience the same problem and they can read about it in this forum.
So, let us know what your problem is and we'll all try to find the best solution for you.
And one last thing, on your very first post in a forum, it's not a great idea to ask people for their personal email to contact them.
If you want private support you pay for it.
So, please go to your local phoneshop and pay them.
Or pay someone on this forum to help you personally. For example, 25-50 euro per hour is a reasonable fee.
There is no free lunch. You have not given the community anything, so why would anyone care about you so much that they would go out of their way to give you personal support for free? Sorry, but you are very naive.
Also, next time please try to name the topic informatively.

First of all - no, your problems are not silly - and this forum is for EVERYONE. Sorry if it seemed that everyone was ganging up on you. We all understand that you don't have a ton of time to spend on the forum. Some people have more time than others and that is totally normal. People in this forum are from all walks of life - young to old, and from all different jobs and professions. A couple of us are in the medical field and we like to volunteer our time doing computer stuff on the side. So, don't feel bad - post whatever question and spend whatever time you can here.
With that said, you should also keep in mind that often times using the search function in the forum (and even the "search this particular forum" option) can answer you question right away and can save the forum from having threads with repeating topics. I know that you don't always find things via search. It has happened to me that I don't find anything, and then someone else shows me an old thread about something I was asking. But in trying the search function as an initial step is always good. It makes the forum more effective.
Now to answer some of your questions.
1. That is a topic that you'll need to spend some time in. Yes, you can play different kinds of video files, but you might need other software for some types of files. And depending on the video, you might need to convert it to an encoding that can be played better on the HD. Things like encoding, bitrate and resolution all play a role here. Like I said, this is a big topic you are dealing with here. This thread has everything you need to know about that. See here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=446366
If you need to convert videos, then SUPER is a great free program. All the info is in the link above.
2. What kind of message are you talking about? Text message (sms) or email?
3. I don't know too much about themes, but I know there are some out there. Try searching the forum for HD themes. Or maybe someone else here who knows more than I do can point you in a direction.
Anyway, I hope this helps a bit. Your first question is something that will just take time to understand and eventually master. I knew little about it until I read that thread I posted. So, just give yourself some time and take the advice for settings given in that post.
Once again, we really are glad you joined the forum. We are all one big family of HD people eager to discover more about our nice little device, and you will find that people here are very helpful.
Cheers

nicely said,
sometimes i do not ask for help as i have read post where the reply was "why dont you use the search feature etc."
with me, when i am looking for a answer to a problem i start with one search and then i find a link to another thread after a few hours i do not know what i was looking for or i do not find the answer, it is here on this forum, but hard to find especilly when you have some threads on 50 or 111 pages and some tech terms are not known.
the Wiki is a great place to start and most of the answers are there, but not all.
i got my touch HD just before Christmas, i had a MDA Compact IV, tried most of the software that i had on that phone and some of it did not work, so i had to start from scratch, wasnt sure about the phone at the start only upgraded as i had run out of storage space on the Compact IV as the Touch HD had a storgae card.
Now all blinged up as my firends would put it, this phone it great, cost a lot but well worth it.
i am not knocking the members on this forum as they have produce great programs for us to use, and have solved many problems, but not everyone is a expert on this forum, and when 111 pages of discustions were posted and a problem resloved, this member was not known to this forum, so he is starting from fresh and would like a little help as some members would kindly give.
nice responses from senior members.
I would also suggest that the title be changed.?
It is not as stated a very very very importand matter except only for the newmember.
Thanks.

I dont think I have seen this error with anything other than email. What I have expereinced when this happens can be 2 things. First, when I set up email it takes a few hours for some unknown reason to start retrieving email.
The other time I see this is when I forget to set the right connection while setting email up. I am with att so when I set mine up I need to make sure I tell email to connect using Media.net in the drop down menu under advanced settings. Hope this helps you on that topic.
wahh chriss cross thnx for the replay and the help .. i thought when i go to check back the post someone was going to start insulting me with noob and stuff like that thisi s what i thought cuz i didnt find alot of friendly persons on forums genraly anyways thank you very much

no worries - I think the attacks are history.
Anyway, here are some more questions:
1. Can you receive sms?
2. Can you call and receive calls without any problem?
3. Have you installed anything that could be affecting things?
EDIT: By the way, here is a link to this forum's Wiki with HD tips. It might be helpful for you in general to become more and more familiar with your new HD. So far we have 43 tips and I'm sure the list will keep growing. And here is a link the to Wiki for programs working and not working on the HD. Both of those are updated whenever something new comes up.
About SMS
Are you sending sms using the e-mail tab in the TouchFLO 3D?

HI Alamaai,
i disagree with some harsh answers. However, it is important to understand that the difference between this forum and HTC Support is the same difference between a self-service and a restaurant with waiters. the food is here and is for free, but nobody is supposed to take you the dishes and you have to walk around and find the food you need. if you really don't find the food, and it is a large restaurant, then you can ask somebody that will probably give you the right hint if we build/add additional information interesting to everybody else.
Nobody here is paid to do this, and we all invest our own private free time to build information which is useful to ourselves.
So...welcome to the XDA self-service! food is great, fellows are nice!
...and this email contributes in building information: if you would have SEARCHED for it, you wouldn't have created your thread!
All the best!
hey sms works now it was from the number that i have to put in sms service
thanks

i can understand how enoying it can be for users to be asked the smae questions, but sometimes it helps to be pointed in the right direction.
when i do ask for help i do not except all the work to be done for me, but sometimes i might not know where to look or someone else on this forum has read or seen a thread relating to my problem.
A user was asking how can he get analogue clocks on his Touch HD.
it can not be done at the moment but i saw a thread where a user installed a Wa2 theme for his phone which had a annalogue clock, all i did was show him the thread, it would have been the last place he would have looked as it was posted in the "Post Your HD Screens" thread.
a little help goes a long way.
A basic intro to video conversion

Yeah -
Glad to hear it got solved.
And now in terms of the video thing, here is a basic introduction.
PLEASE SEE UPDATED VERSION OF THIS POST IN THE WIKI
Keep in mind I am absolutely no expert - and so the video experts here might cringe at my explanation. So if any of you experts out there want to correct me - PLEASE DO - I always like learning new things.
Okay, different things affect how your HD will play a video. The more the processor is pushed to its limits the poorer the quality you will see when playing a video. So, the trick is to find a happy medium between some of the main contributers to quality and processor drain.
1. The bitrate (kbps) is a measure for how much data information is being processed per second. The higher this number, the better the picture, but it also means the processor needs to work harder.
2. The resolution (or scale size) refers to the number of pixels (width x height) that the video will be shown in (at a natural 100% zoom). The higher the resolution, the clearer the picture - but also more work for the HD.
3. The frames per second (fps): A video is basically made up of a bunch of individual frames (or pictures) that are played really fast one after the other. You will often see settings between 23 and 30 fps. I have to say that I don't really see much difference here. However, sometimes if the audio is not properly synchronized with the video after you have done the conversion, they recommend you check what the fps of the original video was, and then keep it the same on your settings for conversion.
4. The aspect ratio is basically the shape the video will be in. 3:4 is your standard TV type size, while 16:9 or 16:10 are common wide screen formats. I personally like the wide screen formats. There are other aspect ratios, but these are the really common ones. Ideally you want an aspect ratio that will be as close as possible to the aspect ratio of the monitor or screen that you will be viewing the video it. That way it just fits nicer.
5. And finally the audio encoding. It also has different settings. Basically four things:
Type of encoding (for example mp3, AC3 or AAC etc.)
Bitrate (kbps - same concept as in video bitrate): Common is around 128kbps
Sampling frequency (in Herz: Hz): Common is 44100 Hz
Mono (1 channel) vs. Stereo (2 channels) sound. There is also 6-channels for surround sound, but that won't do much on your HD.
So, there you have the main things that you should be familiar with. And now, all those settings can be packaged up in different ways. That brings us to the OUTPUT settings for conversion. The goal is to achieve the smallest possible file size with the best possible video quality.
You can look at it as a container that holds a specific formula or encoding inside. Container formats are, for example, .avi, .mp4 and many others. However, the "formula" inside these containers can vary a lot. That is the "encoding" or "codec". Some examples are divx, xvid, MPEG-4, .h263, .h264 etc. So, two different videos might both have file names ending in .avi (the container), but have a totally different encoding inside that container. One might be an xvid and the other one an MPEG-4 - or whatever.
If you use SUPER to convert videos, you see how it is nicely broken up into the different categories for you to choose settings. See the picture I attached. You can either play with different settings, or you can use settings that other people have posted and said they worked well for them.
The HD is limited as to what it can play. So depending on the container and codec used, you can use the HD's album program to play the video or you might need third-party programs like CorePlayer (for example to play divx). The thread I posted earlier shows what different people have tried and how their experience was when using the HD's native album player, or the HD's Windows Media Player or third-party software like CorePlayer.
There is one more thing... called "hardware acceleration". It is a technology that greatly improves how smooth a video is, especially in fast scenes with lots of movement. It involves a piece of hardware (hardware accelerator - like a graphics card) as opposed to just the software. The HD is equipped with this technology, and so its native player can use it. However, programs like CorePlayer don't support the use of a hardware accelerator yet - but CorePlayer has the advantage of being able to play codecs (like divx) that the HD alone cannot play. It's all a give-and-take trying to see what works best.
I tried several players and ended up staying with the HD's native album player with its hardware acceleration. But to get the best quality I end up having to convert most of my videos, and that can be quite time consuming. Everyone has different opinions on that. Some people love CorePlayer.
Sooo, I hope this basic introduction helps you understand other threads a bit better. If you have questions - just ask. I'm not an expert in this, but other people here are pretty knowledgeable when it comes to that.
Cheers

Creating an application

Hello,
i noticed that a lot of apps out there for reading news - are extracting new from various sitesand put them in their app.
Is there an easy way to do this, in order to select which sites i would like the app to bring me the titles of articles, and then when i click on it to read the article?
I am not into programming at all, so i dont know how all this works, thus it may be a silly and easy question for some, but unfortunatley i couldnt find elsewhere an answer!
Thank you

Guides and wiki's for new NST owners

This thread is for folks to post noob-friendly guides for hacks, mods, and other awesome tweaks for the Nook Simple Touch (NST). I'll update as I learn more or as folks post more interesting stuff, or if people have corrections or suggestions, and also to take account of new developments.
BTW- please don't quote the first post (or any really long post for that matter). If you accidentally do, please edit it out of your post.
GUIDE ONE) Enable multitouch and norefresh
1) What you need:
nook simple touch
microSD card and a way to write to it (USB adapter or SD adapter and a card reader)
sd card with clockwork recovery image (from mali100) (I'll write my own guide for this soon)
A root file explorer (I suggest ES file explorer; free, simple, awesome)
both of these files on the root of the CWR SD card: norefresh (toggle version), and multitouch
2) Install multitouch:
Boot into CWR (insert your SD card and restart!)
choose "install zip from SD card" and then "choose zip from sd card"
select "multitouch.zip"
click "yes" (hint: it's the only one that isn't "no")
remove the sd card, then select "reboot device now"
3) Install norefresh apk
open ES file explorer
select norefresh.apk
click yes (did you really need a guide for that?)
That's it! Now, how do you use it?
4) Using your awesome tablet-esqe combination of norefresh+multitouch:
find the norefresh app in the drawer and open it. It won't do anything except flash the screen
Now, open a program you might want to use it with (pdf readers and simple games)
tap the screen four times, in a line starting from top left moving to bottom right (watch this video from marspeople if that doesn't make sense)
5) Stand back in awe. Then go thank the devs in this thread for norefresh (I think it's a combination of Bardo8430 and Marspeople's combined work, correct me if I'm wrong and I'll update); and this thread for multitouch (It appears to be some combination of wheilitjohnny and mali100; again correct me if I'm wrong).
Welcome to the NST community! Oddly enough, I was thinking of creating a thread that will (hopefully) become stickied with quick-start stuff for new people. Might as well start here
GabrialDestruir gave a pretty good explanation about the different rooting methods, which can be found here (just ignore the part about TorimuNooter, development has been stopped and the links have been pulled).
I myself used MinimalTouch (called MinimalNooter on that page) before my Nook broke. It's a little more involved than TouchNooter, but in the end you'll be able to use the Market (Google Play?) sooner. I think there might be some issues with the 1.1.0 vs 1.1.2, but I didn't get the chance to update to 1.1.2 to see for myself.
Be sure to create a backup before you root in the off chance something goes wrong or you decide you don't want your Nook rooted anymore. Here is a link to the backup thread.
Once you feel like you know your way around your Nook well enough, you might consider some of these fun hacks:
NoRefresh - Makes the screen B/W, but will make the screen update MUCH faster and removes the ghosting for the most part
Multitouch - As the name implies, it enables multitouch. You will probably want to use this with NoRefresh.
Flash Player - Flash Player. On the Nook. You will need NoRefresh unless you like seeing ghosts
Video Players - Sure, there's no sound, but it's just fun to have a video on an E-Ink display.
USBHost - This will allow you to plug a keyboard or other USB device into the Nook's micro-USB port and have it actually do something. I think someone got a GPS working at some point... There's also a work-in-progress guide here.
Edit:
There's also this index for manually rooting and doing some other cool things with your Nook, such as changing the shutdown screen.
Thanks for putting your time into this, Googie. That response could become a thread itself if written as an OP. This is really helpful!
Hey googie- Thanks for the great start! I'll update the OP and the title; I agree, hopefully this will get stickied.
So does the "broken nook" mean that you are not going to be a part of this community any more? that would be a shame. I hope you can find another! Best of luck!
BTW- if anyone else has more information I'd be happy to add it to the OP. Depending on the amount of complexity of information received, I may not be the best person to have control over the new user sticky; if you want to write a full guide, you should probably do so in a new thread (to replace this one, assuming it gets stickied).
I've searched a lot, but I can't find a "newbie comprehensive guide"... For example I've found how to root manually my nook simple touch, but I still can't find a way to install manually various .apk's
A sticky with all this basic stuff, would be perfect

That's what I'm hoping to create here. If I get some more suggestions, I'll update it. With all the development going on around here, it would be nice to have a newbie sticky! In particular, what I think what many people will want is a guide (or an all-in-one package) that gives root, installs gapps, and enables norefresh and multitouch. I love the devs, but sometimes the "how-to" threads get a bit complex or give too many options (think about how simple it is with an apple product; they dumb it down to one way to install. Give people a choice on anything and they'll get confused and won't do it. Sad but true). And without any stickies, this forum is... frankly, it's a jumbled mess of complex and often overlapping guides.
Once I get up to speed on this I'll try to create my own guide, but until then, I'm calling for you NST experts to link here to the most interesting stuff available; I'll sort and package it when it's ripe!
I'll wait impatiently
I updated the OP with a noob guide to getting norefresh and multitouch running. Anyone know who the mod is for this forum? If so, mind messaging him to sticky this thread?

I think sometimes the devs get sort of wrapped up in all of the options, so that when you read their guides you have to choose between 4 or 5 options at different steps. As nice as that is to have choice, for most of us (especially those of us who just joined) just want a few simple hacks to start, and are willing to add stuff once we get comfortable. Additionally, the devs don't usually explain the choices (because they're usually explained elsewhere) so you have to track them down, and all the open webpages end up overwhelming your brain and you screw something up.
BTW- If you come up with your own noob-friendly guides, pop them in here and I'll continue to update the OP.
Good job slack, one detail only: in some cases (like mine) nook is set NOT to allow application installation from other sources than market, so you have to change this setting from "nook color tools" , and if this doesn't do any good things get a little complicated http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=24302191&postcount=114
Awesome! This is cool. Once I get back from the beach I will be following the guide.

Hey fufutos- I didn't have this issue. Can you write a little noob-friendly guide explaining where and when this needs to be done? If that's too much, just tell me where in my guide I should add a note about this.
I think a mention and the settings change would be o.k. for start. For the rare unlucky guys like me you can provide the link , but they have to set up an adb server... not the easiest task for the occasional newbie...
oh great was looking for something like this...just got my nook simple touch...and as being a flashing whore..i cant stand using stock on any device
I am going to try my hand at creating a noob tutorial for MinimalTouch rooter, maybe with screenshots. I may even try to get a screenshot of CWM
Anyway, I will post it when it is done.
It's been a while since i updated this thread. Sorry, doesn't appear there's a mod for this forum (explains why there's no stickies anywhere...). If anyone want to write a new guide, please do so. One suggestion would be a guide for unrooting and returning to stock...

Actually to unroot or return to stock easily just use the Touchformatter, also on my sig.
There is a mod (Mr. Highway)

Did you ever figure out what to do with those lines of code?
Also, I spoke to some friends and they told me that those security blocks are usually removed from legitimate root ROMs... does this mean that the NTG ROM on this forum is bad?

Bokk cover Screensaver...Would it be Possible?

Hi, someone showed me their Kobo reader at the weekend and one of the nicest features about it is that the cover of the current novel you're reading is the screensaver! Such a simple idea but it works so well, I often find I read so much ebooks that I have to think a bit too hard about the name and author , I was just wondering would anyone else want this feature badly enough to code it for the NST or if it was even possible? My own Android skills would be a bit too primitive for this unfortunately...
EDIT: Doh, that should read BOOK cover screensaver in the title...
This has already been accomplished, you just need to search all the forums.....
Check out this thread: Current book cover screensaver
Nice - thanks for the heads-up
The big question remains if this will work on 1.2.1 or a custom ROM. If I don't have anything else to do one of these weekday nights, I'll try it..
