Hello!
I have an unrooted version of Nook Simple Touch, firmware 1.2.1 and I would like to back-up my notes, highlights and bookmarks. Is there anyway to do so?
If I root it, will I loose all this data?
Also, please give me a link for a good rooting guide.
You have several options. NookManager will allow you to perform a backup of the current configuration and provides an easy way to root, check this link for more info... NookManager - graphical rooter for 1.2.x and beyond.
You can also find instructions on how to make a complete backup (and exact 2GB image of your Nook) in the Backup/Restore N2E
You can also root using the information in the Minimal rooting - back to basics thread, which requires much more technical skill, but allows you more control over what gets installed.

To follow on to whate David said, you can actually control what gets installed in NookManager by editing the .img before you write it to the microSD card.
Just a thought.
Thanks guys for your replies!
What do you think about this tutorial? http://geekanddummy.com/how-to-rooting-the-nook-simple-touch/
I'm asking because you can install Android v 2.1 on your Nook.
If I root it, afterwards I will be able to access my data? I mean, will remain all the saved notes and adnotations from a given book?

That rooting method should work fine. However, you should know that your Nook already has Android 2.1 on it - that's the stock version (B&N just modified it for their own use). You don't need to change your Android version, nor should you.
And yes, unless you accidentally brick your Nook, you will be able to access all the data you had before you rooted.
Many thanks to you Sir thenookieforlife3!
How can I access my back-up data on the PC? Is there any chance to open it with software like Word, Notepad etc?
I mean my highlighted texts and notes.

There is not a way to back up that specific data alone, but if you make a full device backup, your notes and highlights will be included.

You can't, basically. The only thing you could do with a device backup if you made one is restore it back to your NST if you brick it.
Bugger.
Anyway, thank you very much for your helpful answers!

When migrating to a different Android ROM, what is the easiest way to migrate over the apps? Would doing a data restore from the old rom work or maybe titanium? I would hate to have to do a list of all the apps and find them all over again...
Thanks!
titanium and / or astro will actually let you back up your apps (the apks). i use astro (tools > backup i believe - and is free. or if you used markets, etc. will work too of course.

I use Super Box (download it from market, its free)
First you have to back up all apps into SD card.
Then, everytime you change android,
Firstly reinstall Super Box, and then choose menu "Installer"
Then you can see all your apps (in the form of installer file .apk)
Just click what ever you want to install in the new android rom..
Cheers...
If you are on nand rom wipe data in cwm, install new rom then dovan advanced restore with data and if u used a sd-ext also restore the sd-ext.

Why do you have to individually re-install each apk? When I used WM and SPB Backup and did a restore, it restored all my apps back without doing an individual re-install. Isn't there an app (Backup/Restore) that will do that in Android?

Yes but that only installs apps you have installed via market, It doesnt install apps that you side loaded and it doesnt restore the app data, only the apk file.

Yes, what you need is Titanium Backup Pro, It is THE best backup solution on Android for apps/data.
You can do anything in batch (pro version).
Trust me when I say that this is what you need!

Did you even bother to read what I said properly?
You need the "pro" version, then you can use the "batch" option in backup/restore. I use this all the time, I can restore ALL apps in 1 go, Absolutely no need to restore individually!!!!!
You can even create a update.zip and flash via recovery instead if you wish

Im going to tell you this one LAST time..
TB DOES support batch and DOESNT need to do it individually. If you are having to do them individually then you do NOT have the "Pro" version, You need to purchase (or get elsewhere) the Pro ticket to update your version before you get all the extra features.
Once you have the Pro version you can restore ALL your apps in one click without having to restore them individually.
Also why the fook are you trying to insult me for you ungrateful p.o.s, I'm here trying to help you!!
TB is the best program in its field, It has the most features and its the most advanced aslong as you have the Pro version, If you are looking for something more then you are simply out of luck so get over it and upgrade.
Also as I said before, TB also allows you to create a update.zip so you can also flash them via recovery and not via Android.
You understand now??

You just confirmed your 'knacker' attitude. You did not read my posting and understand what I said. So, move on dude. TB can't be the best if you must use the PRO version. The non-pro version implies that you can do a BATCH restore and it does not allow a Batch restore. I got over it before I posted.

First off I need to say thank to all of you for this amazing forum. I did do some research before posting this but it's so much info overload that I decided that I need some help. As you all know DHD doesn't get any upgrade above 2.3.5 and personally I am disappointed that I want to root it.
My problem is I have in it many applications for my job, like stock portfolios and so on and I need to know if I can root the phone but keep the apps and their settings saved. (Ok, ok I admit I don't wanna lose progress on some games also... shoot me ).
So if I root what can I save? What can't I save? And if possible some guides on upgrading it in Jelly bean version. Also will I be able to download from the google store? or like in Jailbreaked iphones I need to download from somewhere else? I don't want someone to compose a guide but if possible step by step links to visit so I can do it myself. Of course as the forum states no responsibility to any of you if something goes wrong.
Thanks in advance!

Hi, its really simple to find information about rooting the DHD. Try this to root your phone http://www.xda-developers.com/android/how-to-root-the-htc-desire-hd/. A complete backup without root is not possible. But you can backup your personal user data with various backup tools which you can find in the play store.

If you need to downgrade before root (Some firmwares do), you will loose everything. But after root, your contacts and apps should load again from Google Play (if you checked "backup my phone" in settings). After root, you can use Titanium Backup to backup all your apps with data, so when you change ROMs, you don't have to reinstall everything from Google Play and you won't lose settings/progress. But I think that Titanium wouldn't work on unrooted phones... so most probably you must loose settings/progress once, in order to root.
You might be able to backup your SMSes with SMS Backup and Restore (available on Play)
When you root you download everything from Google Play, just as always. This is NOT similar to "jailbraking", Android is not closed as iOS. Rooting means you have access to SYSTEM files.

Great advice! Btw from what I read it backs up everything except app data. I wonder if there is a folder I can copy paste when I see my device as a hard drive that has the app data inside.
Also with the MyBackup I can restore everything after I root my phone? In the rooted version I mean?

The reason I asked about app data is because I was under the impression that rooting gives you access to the partitions where that app data is stored; without root, you can't access where the app data is stored (and so the copy-paste plan is probably impossible). App data is where app settings are saved; without it, MyBackup restores apps as if they were freshly installed from the Play Store, without any other settings saved.
Apps like MyBackup and Titanium Backup and App Manager generally back things up to your sdcard, which isn't affected by any of AAHK's functions.
Like someone above said, if you need to downgrade back to Froyo, I'm not aware of a method by which you can save all your apps and their data.
By the way, I believe an app called Go Backup (not Go Backup Pro) also lets you back up apps (and only apps, not data) without root.
You can backup programs with My Phone Explorer, but programs are not an issue - they will be downloaded automatically from Play Store...

True, but you can always go to Play on a computer and your purchased apps and "send" them to phone... yes, a bit of work, but better than nothing, at least there's a list of apps and it's easier to install them from computer than from a phone

Kinda discouraged to do the root if I can't save the app data :/ I will look at what I will lose and how easy I can regain them and decide. In the meantime does anyone know why my address book doesn't sync with google? (even though the sync is on)
Try to put as much files as you can in the cloud. Make screenshots of other information that you want to keep. Make a back up of your SD-card.

You shouldn´t use a mirror for the Hack Kit. You don't own it and therefore won't support it. Besides the Kit has been updated lately so, please remove the link and direct people to attn1's site.

Consider purchasing Titanium Backup (or trying out out the trial version). It just started letting you backup app data WITHOUT root using ADB. See: http://www.androidpolice.com/2012/0...-adb-backups-without-root-other-improvements/. It will also very much come in handy once you are rooted.

if you want a back up for your rom, theres a way to catch the rom for your carrier from kies described here.

Its particularly useful if your carrier's stock rom is not found in sammobile yet.
Thanks. I mainly just want to back up my icon locations and settings etc in case i need to wipe the phone I don't have to try and remember what settings I had or where are my icons were etc.
Another +1 for Helium. Super simple and it works. I used it to backup some apps on my old phone before moving to the S4. Once I got the S4 I was able to restore them with no problem.

Hi Guys I am after some help my note 3 is arriving today and want to know if there is an easy to transfer my progress within apps on to the new phone from an s4 without root also to be able copy home screens as well.
Any help really appreciated
can't think of a easy way, I am on manual reinstallation of apps from web playstore on my PC (good time to review unused apps anyway), and without root there isn't much option on backup and restore i think..
for home screen try to use the backup function of your selected launcher (which not all have it)

This weekend my Nook Simple Touch with Glowlight has begun losing track of the status of the light. Turning the light on works fine by all means and the light works normally. After you exit the Glowlight dialog, if you go back in to adjust the intensity of the light or turn it back off, it indicates that the light is "off" even when it is "on". At this point, in order to do anything, I have to check the "on" box again before I can change the intensity of the light or turn it off.
The device is rooted using my own combination of "NookManager" and "Tweaked Modded ROM". I have not made any changes to the device in the last month
Has anyone run across this before? Is there a solution? .
@David0226,
That is so interesting that you're having that problem, because I'm having a similar one! Thread: A minor bug/problem?
I haven't currently come across a fix, but I'm working on it. I'll let you know when/if I find one.
I know from several different threads where using sqlite is mentioned that the Nook saves certain pieces of information in database files. Perhaps the database that saves glowlight status is corrupt on both of our Nooks. While our issues appear to be exactly the opposite of each others, they essentially are the same. The Nook is losing track of glowlight status.
Perhaps somehow rebuilding the correct database would fix the issue. The problem is I don't know which database nor how to rebuild it.
Perhaps Renate could help if this is the case as she seems to appear in a large number of the threads relating to Nook databases.
If I don't get an answer by tomorrow, I think I will return my Nook to stock and follow Renate's Minimal rooting - back to basics thread. I really should be able to do everything I actually use with just basic root access.

Is one problem with the GlowLight really worth all of the data you have accumulated since you first rooted?
I mean, I know it's not really my business, but I don't think I'd go so far as to factory reset and reroot if I came across that problem.
Just my personal opinion. I do hope we can get a little help from @Renate NST in here.
Actually, 95% of the data I have accumulated since rooting is on an SDcard. So after re-rooting, I can simply put the SDCard back in and my data will be there.
One reason I am considering this is that since rooting the device, I have installed many apps and edited many system files without keeping a good record of what I have done. So I really don't know where I am at. If the Nook ran on Windows I would have had to re-install months ago.
I have found that there is really very little I actually use. Lightning Launcher and ALReader is pretty much it. I have tablets, so I don't need/want to turn my Nook into one.

Ah, then there's the difference between you and I. I don't have any other tablets, so that's why I use my NTG as a full tablet.
A good tip I'd recommend to you, if you're currently doing any "risky" modding (like me), make a fresh Noogie backup once a week or so. That way, if you do soft-brick my Nook, you can really restore to the way you were recently.
I typically use NookManager to make a backup before each "risky" mod. If you connect your Nook to your computer via USB while booted into NookManager, you can see the backup partition and copy off the backup files. I then rename them so that I can copy them back and restore from them if needed. I find restoring using NookManager much easier that restoring a Noogie backup.

Yeah, I used to use NookManager for backing up, too, but after looking at how the Noogie method vs. the NookManager method works, I discovered that the Noogie method actually makes a more complete backup than the NookManager method.
Plus, for some reason whenever I try to use the NookManager method, I get "Backup failed", so I can't do it anyway.
I bit the bullet and restored to factory default and followed Renate's Minimal rooting - back to basics instructions. It did take care of my glowlight problem.
I discovered that for my situation this is a perfect method. It allows me to make changes and install apps using ADB over WIFI, yet essentially I only have 'root' when using ADB. I can make all the changes I want over the ADB connection but nothing has root permissions if I (or one of my family) am using the Nook "normally". Thus, I have less chance of messing anything up during "normal" operation.
(I also carefully documented everything I did so I now know where I am at.)
