[Q] Android ROM for HD2 with working Netflix? - HD2 Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting and Genera

I dug my old TMOUS HD2 out yesterday and (finally) deleted WinMo 6.5. Flashed Android KitKat (ChauTien CM 4.4.2 v2.0) to NAND and it looks beautiful. Everything I've tried so far on it works fine, except Netflix- app installs fine from Play store but when I run it I get "Sorry we could not reach the Netflix Service. Please try again later. (-9)". All the other phones, tablets & computers in the house can reach the Netflix server. I was hoping to make the HD2 my regular carry phone, but no Netflix is a dealbreaker for me.
Are there any good, stable Android ROMS out there that will give me Netflix support? If you know of some, pros/cons of each would be appreciated as well.
Thanks!

Hello Me, it's Me.
(I'm replying to myself, but really more for the benefit of future searchers)
After a lot more forum searching, it looks like HD2 Android & Netflix can be had if you're willing to install a Gingerbread ROM. Sadly, you can't use anything newer than that- IceCreamSandwich, JellyBean & KitKat ROMs just don't work with Netflix on the HD2. I don't know if anything past that might work as Lollipop hasn't been released yet at the time of this post. I'm currently using the ROM from this thread: [27 OCT 2012][MAGLDR/cLK]TyphooN CyanogenMod 7.2.0.1 v3.8.9[2.3.7][A2SD+][tytung r14] and Netflix works fine. Other Gingerbread ROMs may work as well, but this is the only one I've tested so far.
For the benefit of future readers, I tried the steps listed in this thread: [Edit][Fix for issues with GPS and other apps] HD2 Netflix Master Hack, both the edits to build.prop and installing the .apk for old Netflix app. The old app (as I expected) didn't do anything but force me to install the current app from the Play Store. The changes to build.prop didn't affect anything with the Netflix service but certainly made the rest of my phone buggy. So, don't bother with that stuff, it's outdated and doesn't do anything, or at least not anything good.
After the above, I started from scratch (did a full wipe and re-flashed the ROM). This time I just went straight to the Play Store and installed the Netflix app. It works! :good:
I don't know how to tell if I'm getting Netflix' highest-quality stream, all the old threads I've been wading through seem to indicate that the Netflix apps at that time would only feed the HD2 a lower quality stream. But the app I just got from the Play Store is obviously a much newer app- it shows the new Netflix Logo they recently introduced, and it supports Netflix Profiles, which didn't exist back when Gingerbread was a current OS. The picture quality I'm getting is definitely acceptable to me- it's not as nice as on my HTC One S, but that's no surprise.
TL;DR: If you want Netflix on HD2, install a Gingerbread ROM and download the App directly from the Play Store.

Many questions...HTC-HD2 vs Vibrant

I'm getting increasingly disappointed with the issues on the Tmo HD2. Aside from the fact that Android phones/OS are gaining in popularity and Windows 6.X is just a buggy dead horse, there are other TMo HD2 annoyances like:
- Bloatware stupid apps and sample crippled apps hard-coded into ROM.
- Firmware random lockups.
- Lack of a good full-featured tethering solution.
- Lack of a good WiFi router/sharing app that supports good security encryption.
- Lack of better selection of applications that actually WORK.
- Lack of a better performing touch screen that won't freeze up.
I know that there's limited knowledge out there on the TMo Vibrant, but it's safe to say that given the vast amount on knowledge here in these XDA forums, there's sure to be a few users her that can answer at least some of my questions. Especially since I am TOTALLY Android ignorant.
My Questions:
1) Is it safe to assume that ALL Android apps out in the Android world will work on the Vibrant?
2) Are there Tethering, WiFi, Router apps ou there that will work with Vibrant?
3) Is the Vibrant Camera & Flash (assuming there's a flash) comparable to the HD2?
4) Since Android is a "Google" thing, will it run Bing and other popular search engines/browsers?
5) Will Vibrant support Microsoft Mail, ActiveSync or compatible clients?
6) Are apps installed the same way (.cab style) as HD2?
7) Is the Android OS/Vibrant easily susceptible to Trojans/Viruses/Worms?
Like I stated, I am tottaly ignorant on Android and this new phone. Any help in answering the above would be appreciated.
Thanks
i don't have my vibant yet but have had a MyTouch 3G running android since last year
learned real quick, not all apps run well (whether free or paid apps)) some create other issues in the android system. Best bet before installing an app is to float it up on a forum and ask others experience and not install too many at a time
i got to the point i would install one, and run it 3-4 days to make sure no problems had crept in before thinking about installing another new app

I was running the Droid for awhile before switching to Tmo because of cost reasons, and here is what I know of android from the past couple months using it and loving it.
1. Yes, since it won't be running some outdated archiac version of Android like 1.5 or earlier all the apps on the market should work.
2. Without root there is pdaNet. Once root happens, you have the option of downloading wifi tethering, or until 2.2 comes out.
3. Vibrant won't have flash on the camera, but what I have seen from the Galaxy S camera it looks good. (Can't be worse than the Droid camera)
4.That actually depends on carrier, I.E. the Verizon version of the Galaxy S will have bing on there. Tmo just uses Google. There are a couple different browsers that you can download from the market. I personally recommend DolphinBrowser HD.
5. You are required to have a gmail account signed into the phone, and you can if need be forward all your emails to that gmail account, but also it comes with Activesync support.
6. Apps are installed via the market or sideloading (unless you have an AT&T phone because they love crippling their phones). And that is all done with the .apk's that can be loading on to the SD card.
7. As far as I know, no. I haven't experienced that yet *knock on wood*
Hopefully that answers your questions. Obviously I haven't used this exact phone yet. These are just answers that I have from using other Android phones

I had the HD2 and I enjoyed mine up until I broke it 2 weeks ago, maybe try a custom ROM because none of those issues occurred on my device.
i had the HD2 and i can say it was a huge hype a machine and tremendous let down. i had high hopes for that phone and it just did not deliver.
I have been using the vibrant these past few days and i can say its everything i hoped the hd2 would be and so much more.
it runs 2.1 so all the apps in the market will work fine.
for tethering, right now all you can do is run PDAnet as mentioned above, but its supposed to get 2.2 Froyo by summers end, which should have tethering built in. As long as Samsung doesnt pull a Behold 2 on us, and i doubt tmobile would cripple android.
the camera is stunning! i hate the lack of a flash but ive used it at midnight with nothing more than a porch light and pictures look amazing! no noise or blurring. I heard theres a night mode on it but i have yet to use this feature. but the camera is definitely better than the hd2s. and it records 720p videos.
And if Bing is in the market you can definitely use it. there are a ton of browser in the market u can use instead of the stock one, and what i like best (over the hd2) it can be set as your default browser. The stock browser is aazing and with the snappy processor and sensitive touchscreen it works wonders.
Android has exchange support built in, it should sync emails, contacts, and calendars.. i cant say i have used it tho.
Most apps are installed thru the market but can also be loaded through the memory card using a file browser. The phone does have one built in called "Files".
Ive had an android phone since the first g1 and can say virus have never been an issue.. not that the phones are invincible, but i doubt ull have issues. there is antivirus software in the market tho if u need it.
Other than that, the Super amoled screen screams amazing. u look at it on a black screen it doesnt look like its even on. This is the best screen ive ever seen! it rivals my hdtv lol. One look at the Avatar movie and ull be sold.
The app launcher, unlike the start menu on the hd2, is fully customizable. u can reorganize the apps and dock in any order. The dialer and applications/home shortcut cant be moved however. it can also be set to be orangized alphabetically or in list view.
My favorite feature is the dlna support. i love android but theres never been a true multimedia phone for me. this does it all. i can stream movies from my networked drive onto my phone, or i can send stuff from my phone to my ps3 (xbox 360, or dlna tv would work too).
And the phone has the screen size of the hd2 minus all the bulk. this phone is anorexic skinny! the thinnest android phone ive seen. and in a good way.
I prefer the phone over a nexus one due to the screen quality, and 16gb internal memory. And my friend has an evo 4g, the two things i like about that phone that this doesnt have is the front facing cam, and a flash on the camera. but the evo is bulky compared to this.
Hands down, the Vibrant is the phone to get on the Magenta!
Hope this helps.

[Q] Youtube for HTC Legend

I'm a great fan of cyanogenmod and all that's related. I'm even a great fan of my Legend which seems to be forgotten or swept under the carpet...
I've just tried hopfully to try and get Flash to work until I found on this forum that that would'nt work because the last version of Flash requires newer hardware.
Now it seems that YouTube doesn't work anymore (read: I can't install it from the app market)?
I'm really upset by this, not that I'm a YouTube addict, but I used it now and then to look at movie trailers etc.
So I allready tried to install an APK from somewhere on this forum, but that crashes on me.
I currently run the Cyanogenmod Mod 7 nighty build 24.

[Q] How to get stock ICS/Honeycomb on fire

A couple of guys in my office got fires for Xmas, and they want to put a stock rom on them so they can use it like a normal tab and get the google market place.
Can someone point me to a tutorial for putting a new rom on a fire and a link to stock ICS or stock honeycomb for them?
Thanks.

There is no honeycomb port to the Fire (at least not yet anyway).
As for ICS, there is a port-in-progress that is in pre-alpha stage here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1411895
There is a stable (good for everyday use) port of CM7 (Gingerbread) here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1390773
As for how to flash ROMS, take a look at this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1399889
we are pretty much stuck with gingerbread right now as said above.
I'm using the CM7 that he linked to above. Downsides to this are that you loose the ability to use amazon prime videos and lending. Basicly, you loose the stock amazon app (which is integrated into the OS), so these are not available. You can however use the Amazon app from google apps, which allows you to read amazon books.
The ICS builds that are in progress still have to many issues for me to try them. Occasional issues with accessing SD card, no hardware video support and patchy sound.
Like what the above poster stated, your best bet at thee moment is cm7 if you are looking for a good, stable, daily os with marketplaces access. I personally am using the pre-alpha ICS build and am loving it despite the issues but it really is just for testing at this point.
Sent from my Amazon Kindle Fire using Tapatalk
Also the ICS builds do not support USB. So you would have to boot to TWRP to mount the SD card to load files from your PC to your Fire. Then boot back to the OS to use the device.
If they just want the google marketplace then you can root and install the market on the stock ROM. If you want a custom rom, your best bet right now is CM7. If you give it a month or two I'm sure there will be a decent ICS daily driver out.
It sort of depends on how far you need to go before they consider it a "normal tab." I use mine on the stock rom for stuff I would expect out of a normal tab.. watching video, reading, listening to music, some web browsing, every now and then some robo defense or the like, etc. It works fine like that for me.

From Stock 4.1.2 to CM10: my Wingray experience.

Hello,
I just would like to share my experience of moving from the stock 4.1.2 Jelly Bean to the CM10 release, mostly for people who are still using stock 4.1.2 because I couldn't find such a thread before jumping to CM10.
I installed the 5th November nightly release of CM10 as the more recent ones (including the "stable" release) have an annoying problem : the Play Store reports some incompatibilities with apps which were working fine with the stock 4.1.2. It seems that this problem is due to the lack of free memory with the newest CM10 releases ...
The 11/05 CM10 was the last one with no Play Store problems, you can download it here for the Wingray :
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/2383656/cm-10-20121105-NIGHTLY-wingray.zip
EDIT : on the 6th December, I updated my Xoom from the 11/05 nightly to the 12/05 nightly, and so far I still didn't have the Play Store compatibility issue, which means the problem has been solved in between these two releases ...
Performances :
I must admit that I didn't think it was possible that a custom ROM was better optimized than the one made by Google itself ...
I was very happy with the fluidity of the stock 4.1.2, but when I used CM10 for the first time, I tried some websites known to be a bit laggy with the stock browser, and they were just close to perfect about fluidity with CM10 ! I couldn't find a laggy website with stock browser yet ... These tests were not involving overclocking.
So I then ran Quadrant and had a score of 2800, where I had 1900 with stock 4.1.2 ... !
I then overclocked the Xoom to 1,5 GHZ, and Quadrant reported a score of 4100, about equal to the Transformer Prime !
I don't really play with my Xoom but I tried to play to GTA III, and when overclocked, compared to the stock 4.1.2, I could put a lot more graphical details with a better fluidity. I really felt like using a whole new device. But most of the time I don't use overclocking as I want to save my battery life, and the overall fluidity of the Xoom running CM10 at 1GHz is very good.
A few people reported they found a performances increase with the very last nightly release. However, as it still have some compatibility problems with the Play Store, I will not jump on it.
I don't know if Cyanogen will try to solve this incompatibility issue as it maybe related to the Gapps taking too much storage space, and Cyanogen does not support Gapps ...
Updates :
I choosed a Cyanogen rom (instead of EOS) because with this one you can easily update to newer ROM release very easily, without the need to connect your Xoom to the PC, and without loosing datas : CM10 includes an update manager which proceeds just like an official Google OTA ! That's just perfect to me, I'm not sure if this does also exist on EOS, I couldn't find any informations about this.
So I have the feeling that my Xoom is still supported and updated, which is very good. Thanks a million to Cyanogen team !
Bugs :
I couldn't find bugs yet on the 11/05 release, I just had an unexpected reboot the very first time I used it, only after 5 minutes of use. Since then, I never had this problem again (3 days with no reboots for now).
Features :
I didn't try all of them yet, but there are plenty of cool features :
- overclocking ability with multiple policies possible to save battery life for exemple, or for the best performances all the time.
- other performances tweaks about RAM like "KSM" use, and some other parameters which allow better performances but lowering the battery life.
- root of course !
- the ability to light the charging LED, even when your Xoom is powered on.
- many many others, some I didn't tried/discovered yet.
So I am very happy now with CM10, and I would like to thanks Cyanogen again about this excellent work !
I would recommand to any stock 4.1.2 users to jump on to CM10, the Xoom will just be running better then !
Here is the link which explains how to jump to a Cyanogen ROM :
http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/wiki/Mo...de#Installing_the_ClockworkMod_Recovery_Image
Have fun !
TeamEOS has all the features you mentioned and you can update it easily as well. Don't need a computer, they use GooManager. In short they are both good ROMs, there is nothing to dislike about both of those ROMs, both teams have putted a lot of effort into optimising the XOOM and adding functions/features. It's all up to user preference, with CM ROMs I get random reboots, while TeamEOS I don't get any of that.

How polished is the root/rom procedure for the Xoom? I came from the Transformer world and it was pretty well dialed in..not a lot of monkeying around or knowledge required.
What's the easiest way to get root and a custom rom?

Idk, never rooted or used a Asus tablet. Once the Xoom is unlocked and rooted you really have no need for a PC unless you use fastboot & adb to flash, push, pull, etc.....

Definitely. I've used both ROMs, but struggled with SOD's on EOS Stable and lag on the nightlies! CM10 solved both of these issues for me. Both ROMs are full of features and and a no brainer compared with stock.

Thanks a lot, that's interesting. I was more and more thinking about trying the EOS ROM, but I was too lazy about reinstalling all my softwares and data ...
What do you mean by "SOD" ?
It's very interesting to have the feedbacks of people having tried both custom ROMs, it would be cool if some other people could give their opinion.

i have not tried EOS yet. CM10 runs absolutely flawless. I got a good 14hrs -/+ on the battery playing Deadzone, watching movings, browsing the net, skyping with my kids and I still have 28% left today. No OC. Having full R/W access to the External Sdcard is great. I now can Dropsync my folders from my Dropbox to the card for a quick handy on the go backup
EOS from what i have heard has some great features.....i will need to backup and give it a go here soon.

Yes it's very easy, considering this is a google experience device all you really have to do is unlock it, flash in recovery and then using recovery flash in another ROM. You should have zero problems at all, considering the bootloader is unlocked.
Can anyone please tell me if one of the december CM10 nightly did solve the Play Store incompatibility problem ?
Thanks !

as long as you will not entirely answer my questions, I will still ask it, and I'm free to do it !
Yes you don't have this problem now, thanks for this information, but did you have this problem before ?
If you never had this problem, this means you may not be using the CM10 Gapps but the EOS one, or you just didn't realize that you actually have a compatibility issue with the Play Store ... It's easy, check the application named "eye in sky weather", if the store says that it's not compatible with your device, it means that you're facing the compatibility issue as this application is in fact compatible with the Xoom. Of course this problem is not only for this application, there are many others which are reported as not compatible ...

I am using the latest nightly. In fact i have used all the December nightlies with no issues.
As far as gapps, i have used that lastest gapps 4.1.2 and i have tried gapps 4.2+. I used the gapps posted in the link on first page of this thread both packages i have experienced no issues, market is working fine, no incompatibilities.
As far as my comment about aking your questions.....ask in one place....no need to ask your question in every forum are start a new thread.....i was not being rude, it is in the forums rules.......
Good luck.....
Also, check your dpi settings....that will cause market issues. Search the forums & google the fix is simple...
Also try manual installing an older marker version or try or KDH 4.2 gapps.
These are all solutions to your issue(s). No one else may try and answer you question because they are not having or no longer have these issues.......what i posted above are the steps to fix the issue.

Thanks for these informations, I'll check this. But for now I have no problems with the market as I am using the 11/05 release. The problem came after this release and was known to be due to a free memory issue (check my first post of this thread). That's why I was asking if a recent release of CM10 did solve this problem.
EDIT : I just jumped from 11/05 nightly to 12/05, and I still have no problems with the Play Store, which means the Play Store compatibility problem has been solved in between these two releases ... Great news !
Thanks
Thanks man, that's what I needed to migrate, a good experience report.
I heard about incompatibilities, also that some apps won't work, but I can manage that. I'm now going to make a backup of my things and this weekend I want to install CM10. The main problem now is the backup, since I have a lot of things on it, both the internal memory and SD are quite full. XD
The most surprising thing is that I could not find any report about this bug correction, which was a very annoying bug, but I could find plenty of threads talking about this problem and trying to find workaround solutions ... None of them reported this bug does not exist anymore ...
Similar ROM experiences...

Still the best form factor out there!

I still refuse to give up on the Evo Supersonic. It has the best form factor out there! The SD card, removable battery and kickstand make it the best out there for several functions.
Just the usual disclaimer. I have done nothing to develop the below ROM's and just passing on some good work by great people that are well worth tossing a dollar or two to support their development.
One I have loaded a "media player" ROM on it which can be found here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1850220
It wont activate your cellular bands and shuts down most "phone" functions. I then loaded alarm clock pro which can be found here
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.vp.alarmClockPlusDock&hl=en
It makes a great bedside alarm clock with a nice "floating" time display that is highly customizable and even comes with its own white noise generator!
The second I use as a full fledged media player and "gym phone" with a ring.to account loaded on it so it will still function as a phone with the wifi network at the gym if I MUST get calls or texts. The ROM I use for this is a Kit Kat ROM and looks and runs great! Its by EverVolv and Team Nocturnal.
it can be fond here
http://forums.team-nocturnal.com/index.php?/topic/1752-romkitkat-444-updated-110814/
Hope this helps! I would love, love, love to see a Lollipop ROM come out. I saw an old article saying CyanogenMod made one, but the link isnt active on it (Sigh).
Dave
Thanks for the tips Unidave199! I've also installed the Ubersonic media player ROM you mention onto my old-ass HTC EVO 4G original, and it runs great! I didn't have to flash GAPPs because it already had the play store and I could install whatever else I needed that way.
Ubersonic ROM has allowed me to run the Ingress game/app on the EVO like it's a little tablet with GPS, by tethering the EVO to the wifi of my current phone, without needing a phone plan. Nice way to upgrade to a more recent version of Android that is compatible with Ingress.
I'm curious though, in terms of different versions of Android, is there a particular version of Android that is at least version 4.0 or higher, that is particularly forgiving on the hardware? Like, uses the least amount of phone resources/memory/CPU so that I get more performance?
Difficulty here in finding valid links to ROMs that run on the original HTC EVO 4G. Most links are dead, so you can't find a download source for the ROM anymore.
I tried the Nocturnal ROM, which is KitKat 4.4.4. However, I cannot get it to create a google account, as it just says that Google servers are not accessible, so I can't access the Google play store using that ROM. Maybe I'm using the wrong version of the 4.4.4 GAPPs? Anyone running Nocturnal ROM and were you able to add a google account and access the play store to install more apps?
