Galaxy S5 Warranty & Water Damage? - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey,
Just wanted to ask a quick question and see if anyone has had and luck with getting their water damaged S5 repaired under warranty? I've just sent mine back to them today.
I had mine submerged for a few seconds under no more than a couple of inches of water. It worked for most of the day but it began to behave strangely and the screen started flickering. Eventually the screen stopped working entirely.
I had the back panel fitted correctly and the port cover was secure. I reckon the water made its way in through the speaker. I've seen a few videos online of similar issues for others and just like mine, they had the condensation inside the front/rear camera and eventually the screen died.
I won't hear back from them for a couple of weeks, but has anyone on here had any luck in getting them to fix the phone?
thanks in advance.

They will repair the device or replace it with a new one under warranty for sure. The S5 has a IP67 rating and they even advertise with this feaure. The fact water came into the phone is their problem and not the costumers.

Yeah that's exactly my thinking on it but the guy in the shop didn't expect it to be covered, (although i got the impression that he wouldn't know what IP67 meant of you gave him a book on it).
I know they say it can survive 30 mins at 1 metre deep in water to to be rated at IP67 but mine failed miserably after only a few seconds exposure to water.

Don`t let them blow you off, its covered under warranty.

..

I never said it was "Waterproof". I understand that it is "water resistant" and that it is rated to survive 1 meter of water for 30 minutes. I would never put that to the test, but I would expect a phone with an IP67 rating to survive a dip of a few inches for no more than 5-6 seconds.

..

I'm hopeful they'll look after it. I haven't heard back from them yet so it could still be good news.
We have consumer systems here for taking stores/companies to court quite cheaply if products aren't up to scratch. I can do that if necessary, but I'd rather things were quick and easy.

..

Hi,
It's going a little off topic really, but I have video footage of the moment it was submerged. I would hope it won't come to that, and I have no experience of warranty issues so I'n not writing them off yet.
The reason I posted this thread was to see if anyone had the same problem with their phone and if they had any trouble dealing with the warranty claim.

Update:
I'm a little disappointed to find that it seems they are deeming the phone "Warranty Void" and to my surprise, they diagnosed a "Warped Board" as the cause (See the photo below).
With so much attention on the iPhone 6 after "BendGate" a couple of weeks ago, I was shocked to find they were suggesting my phone had bent seemingly from regular wear and tear.
I wasn't aware of any bending, I hadn't dropped or bent the phone at all, just got it wet and it was in my hand the entire time when it happened. It worked for a while afterwards before the screen gave up.
Now I'm starting to wonder if the phone had bent gradually in my pocket, compromising the water resistant seal and allowing water in when I got it wet.
I'm very disapointed with how the phone stood up to regular wear and tear. Its the latest in a long list of Samsung phones I've had since the first Galaxy S but the experience has really put me off getting the Note 4 next week.
I'll keep you updated with further developments, Been using an iPhone since this happened and its killing me!

Just another quick update:
I've been in touch with Samsung directly about the phone and have explained that the repair centre (Independent Samsung approved) had deemed the phone beyond economical repair and that it had a bent board inside. They have arranged for a courier to come and take the phone for a second opinion with a different company and have assured me that if it is indeed water damaged, it'll be covered under warranty.
We'll see how it goes from here. Nothing's certain yet but so far I've been very happy with the service I've received. Here's hoping I'll be back on the road soon. I never realized just how much I rely on my phone.

Well, only if there's Film Tape over the Humiditý-Indocator.
...and if your phone has got a humidity-sensor (like S 4), it maybe logged the humidty in the last few life seconds of the Phone. [DEVIL ICON]
I'm very sorry to tell you this.
But don't worry! There's something called Water damage Repair:laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh:

In another forum I read about a guy whose phone got water damage. The repair store pressure tested it twice and it leaked both times. Then they cleaned the charging flap and tried it again without leakage. They claimed that the charging flap had not been closed correctly and the warranty did not apply...

My Xperia deep in gthe water... and still working

Hello,
I was in spain on a river heloing my son jumping from one rock to another when i heard a ""splash""... Ooppps that was my xperia that just dropped out of my pocket into about 4 meters water.
My parents instisted to pick it up while i was just thinking i would get another one from my company.
So i jumped into the water and pick it up...
I did wait about an half day and started it again and guess what? STILL WORKING.
So ic an tell you that HTC device are water resistant
Wow - You got lucky dude!
i dropped mine in the toilet and it broke the screen - it messed up all the colours and everything - was the phone off when you dropped it in?
i'm sure there is some serious corrosion going on inside of the unit. but there is always a chance you'll never have a problem from it.
yes u should dry it some more , half day isnt enuff ...

Have you tried throwing it in lava?
as mentioned already, half a day is not long enough. i suggest you leave it off for a few more days. sure it is working now but while it's powered on, the moisture inside will slowly but surely build up corrosion at the solder joints and battery/power terminals. that' s when things start to go screwy.
take off the battery cover and battery, leave it open with they keyboard showing, wrap the phone in a thin towel or dry wash cloth and place it on top of a tv or something that generates constant heat. it helps to leave a fan blowing as it helps the air circulate and remove unwanted moisture.
leave it to dry for as long as you can live without your xperia. the longer it dries, the better your chances of things not going wrong in the future due to corrosion and whatnot.
this was my old before I got my X1. Picture taken (not with phone...obviously) for insurance company.

Trust me, it's only matter of time, until the oxidizing will kill your phone totaly. Once it gets to the water, it's already on the way to hell. Water and electronics, that's a killer. Especialy if some stupid people take the phone right after droping into the water and wonder that it doesn't work and CHARGE THE DAMN BATTERY!

Don't be so sure.
Three years ago I dropped my old W800i in the tub and it was fully submerged. I dried it off thoroughly then charged it up, on the assumption that the heat from charging would evaporate the water quickly. It worked, and it's still going.
well I am so sure. As I do work with a service guy and his job is to fix phones.... It's same like droping a cookie into the water and saying later - it looks as new.. It may look like new, but that's only what you can see. Inside the cookie isn't the same cookie as it was once before
That's called "selection bias," dude. The guy you work with gets the phones that did not survive the water. He never touches or sees all the other phones that survived.
There is at least one entire post talking about phones that survived various water submersions.
I have a Dell laptop that died for 3 days after being soaked with rain (2 years ago), and now continues to function after it dried, as well as the SE W800i.
That's 2 for 2. My own selection bias, but not bad at all.
put it in container with rice
lol. that's constant heat, but constant humidity! not a good idea
Dry rice, not a rice cooker.
Why rice?
And I don't think the inside of the phone will suffer corrosion since rivers don't have salt water
And one more thing.. I don't electronic devices don't mind watter as it is, but the electronics do mind because water is a conductor (duh!) and it screws it up inside so that it turns off..
I also heard that after a phone takes a bath in any kind of natural water, it would be good to dip it in distilled water (?) since it's not a conductor and all that stuff.. kewl ha?

Because the rice will absorb any moisture in the air around it.
It will:
http://www.roscoemoss.com/tech_manuals/fmcf/
yeah, we all know from 3th grade of elementary school, that water is a conductor. Which is what most people don't realize. What it does with the motherboard? Motherboard has special thin "skin", which protects it from the corosion or oxidization (damn how to spell that?). But once you put it in the water, the thin "skin" is destroyed and that's it.
So it may work now, next week.. But in the near future it'll die suddenly

Help with Vodafone claiming my S2 has water damage.

Hi, all. I was having some problems with my samsung galaxy s2's USB port where it won't connect to the computer and it thinks theres a cable always connected to it and I sent it off through vodafone and now they've just rang me up and claimed it has water damage just on the usb port and want £100. This is utter tosh as its never seen water! Is there anything I can do to fight against it? Only had it 2 months . Cheers.

get it back then send it to samsung mate , the usb port probs just needs a clean with a toothbrush it has happend on a few sgs2 handsets there is a thread in the q+a section about it
also if you google vodafone water damage phone see how many hits come up , they dont seem to like warranty work and just seem to say nope water damaged and ask for £100 this must be the 10th thread ive read in two weeks about voda doing this
google it and see what comes up you'll be shocked and even more angry that they are trying to rip you off
get the phone back and go to samsung dont mention vodafone and water damage just pretend you dont know whats up , explain your problems and leave it with them , i bet they dont say anything about water damage and you get your phone back working
also check out the q+a threads for more info on cleaning the usb port , one person used a electric friendly cleaner spray and now says it works flawless another says their usb port was damaged inside and it needed to be bent with flat head screwdriver , loads of handy info in that thread about usb problems
hope you get it sorted and i hope voda stop this scam asap
If theres alot of topics about this, I suggest you sent them an email, telling them if they don't send you back your phone in perfect condition, you will forward every topic about this fake water damage to fraud services.
They won't like the hassle and will just fix it and send it back. Alternatively you can ask for it back and send it directly to samsung.
http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=vo...s=org.mozilla:en-GB:official&client=firefox-a
that is the hits i get with just ''vodafone water damage'' in google
as you can see from just reading a few of them links its a big issue here in the uk and i dont know how they are getting away with it !! i needs to be investigated but what we need users to do is take up a manufactuer warranty when this happends and get proof it wasnt water damage then when loads have people have done this voda can get the ass wooping they deserve
its a joke how they are getting away with it , its been going on well over a year now :-(
Water damage is often a condensation issue triggering the water ingress measure inside a phone .
Fairly standard to reject under warranty across all providers and under Samsung warranty .
Very difficult to prove no water damage if the water indicator actually indicates water ingress .
jje
I had this usb issue but I was still within 14 days so I whinged at P4U and finally they replaced it with a white SGS 2 I wanted . Hope you get yours sorted, it's an awesome phone.
The phone has a couple of stickers which turn red upon being in contact with water. Like this

Not sure where they are on the GSII but they will be red if they are refusing to honour the warranty due to water damage.
There's one water indicator on the SGS2 and it lives on the underside of the rear chassis, to the left of the camera if you're looking at the chassis when attached to the phone. (so in other words, no where near the USB ports)
Incidentally, the USB ports are NOT on the motherboard, they're on a daughter board which also houses speaker, microphone and aerials, so it's definitely not £100 to replace.

I had this when I was on Holiday recently the place was humid and I thought it was the cable. I used micro fibre cloth to clean the port and then also lightly used a hair dryer from a distance to blow out any excess grime. It worked after that.
Avoiding liquid damage
Unfortunately phones aren't waterproof. Apart from not taking your phone with you when you go swimming, here are a few things that can help protect your phone from water damage.
To avoid liquid damage, do not:
Use your phone in the rain.
Keep your phone anywhere damp (e.g. a window ledge or glove compartment).
Expose the phone to condensation.
Take your phone from a very cold climate into a warm climate as condensation can form.
My phone's got wet - help!
Oops! If your phone's got wet there's no need to panic - but you need to act quickly! Follow these instructions to as soon as you can to try to get your phone back up and running.
Take out the phone's SIM card and battery
Wipe away as much moisture as possible using a cloth or paper towel
Put your phone in bowl of rice and leave in a warm, dry place. The rice will help draw moisture out of your phone
Don't put your phone anywhere hot, including on a radiator. Excessive heat can damage your phone.
Leave your phone to dry for 24 hours, replace the SIM card and battery and try turning it on again. If it's still not running properly, repeat the drying process using a bowl of rice
it worked for i clean bought alcohol from the pharmacy cost me a dollar, and use tooth pic and put cotton and cleaned all dirt is gone its fine

[Q] Help with HTC warranty (claimed water damage)

Hi guys,
Need a little help / advice from y'all.
My Desire Z suddenly stopped receiving phone signal (2g/3g etc). Well the phone signal effectively crashed (I couldn't make a call and the signal level stayed where it was, didn't go up and down) but if I rebooted it it came back to life. Well it came back to life twice, the third time it did it, it wouldn't receive a thing / connect to a network. Just said network not found.
At first I suspected software, so tried reflashing Cyanogen, no dice, tried the standard rom, no dice. I had also tried my sim in another phone and it worked perfectly.
So I suspected something hardware had broken. I put things back to stock and filed a warranty claim, I crossed my fingers and it came back water damaged?
This is interesting as I'm very careful about my phone and dampness, and all 3 visible water damage stickers are clear white?
I raised this with HTC who claim there are additional water damage stickers internally.
However having looked over this teardown http://tjworld.net/blog/htc-desire-z-tear-down Im pretty sure there arent any other water damage indicators in my desire and Im being fobbed off!
Anyone know if there are additional water damage indicators?
Thanks
Mark
nobody know?
Based on the pictures from that tear down, I can see one additional water damage sticker.

I circled it. That one, at least, is not visible unless you take the phone apart. There may even be others; you're not the first person to say that HTC has mentioned internal water damage stickers.
Thanks chap, thats what I thought. You can see that sticker through a little hole on the back of the case. JUST. I still think theyre fobbing me off!
Unfortunately, that's always a possibility. :-/
idk if theres another sticker but I do kno they wont tell ya what and why. If ya send in your phone and they detect any and I mean any detection of root. They claim water damage. So when ya send it in. Ya gotta Make sure the Rom is OTA, Radio Downgraded to that official OTA, bootloader stock, S-Off and Recovery all in check.
I made that mistake once and didnt realize it, not again.
Why not ask HTC for photographic evidece of the water damage

I'm not saying that HTC is lying, but if you think they are, then what's to stop them from dripping water on that (mostly) hidden damage sticker and saying "There!"? Photographic evidence, in this case, would prove absolutely nothing.
colonelk, if you have insurance on the phone, you might be better served just having HTC send it back to you, and filing an insurance claim. If you don't, then I'm afraid you're at their mercy. You'll either have to pay their repair charges, or buy a new phone. Kinda sucks, but there it is.

I have the same issue with my One X. Phone died at random and HTC is saying they won't cover it because it has water damage. It's never been near any significant amount of water - certainly not enough to get inside the guts of the unibody chassis. I tried to claim insurance and my insurer is saying they won't cover it unless they have a statement from HTC saying that the fault (dead phone) has occurred specifically as a result of the water damage. I've asked HTC for confirmation and (after a week of waiting so far) they have not responded. I will be considering legal action against HTC if they don't as this is looking like it's just a catch all for not honouring their warranties, which is illegal.
FYI even though I'll be taking this action as far as possible with HTC I can't wait around with no phone, so I've already bought another phone and (because of this warranty rubbish) I have switched brands to a Samsung. Good work HTC, I have been a loyal HTC user for many years and models until now. That's what I call cutting off your nose to spite your face.
That's why Apple are far away before HTC - excellent customer service. I don't like iPhone but I'll think hard when it's time for new phone
Sent from my HTC Vision using Tapatalk 2
I have had this exact same response with 3 phones. A Nokia N97, a HTC Wildfire and a HTC Desire Z. In all three cases the phone was under warranty when they died without warning. Each time told that it was water damage. For the Nokia I demanded evidence and I was sent a pic of damage to one of the ICS that they claimed was shorting because of moisture. HTC could not provide any evidence.
The Nokia and the DZ I replaced by buying good condition used handsets off eBay. Get a good deal by looking for ones without box and accessories. The Wildfire I couldn't be bothered spending money on.
It was because of the Nokia that I changed to HTC. Next phone I am getting is likely to be a Samsung!

OnePlus One Is Waterproof - Discussion here

Hey everyone,
I was recently walking outside in the pouring rain with my OnePlus One. The crazy thing was that it was still functioning fine despite being practically hailed on. So I pulled out my M8 and decided to start recording. In this test I put the OnePlus One underwater multiple times and it came out fine each attempt. I didn't have any issues with the touch sensitivity, headphone jack, or even charging. It's pretty crazy quite honestly.
Thanks for providing this. I think you're a bit crazy considering people would kill for this phone, but it looks like it might have a nano coating like the moto G
Thanks for risking it.
Beyond that - how did you find the screen in the outdoors? Just respond instinctively (e.g. "rainbows directly into my eyes", "it was OK", "use only in caves - dark ones even for them")
a lot of modern phones can do this. the way they are built with low tolerances gives them some water resistance. but the oneplus is not waterproof, and it has no water resistance certification. so dont try this at home with your phone. you will probably mess something up and the phone can start to act weird days later. it is a testament to the build quality though.
@Nxxx,
getting interested about Speaker, is it working after such shower.?
what about earpiece.? OnePlus One detects earphones after this.?
etc. with such thing that are not visible at first glance or through video...(is it fully functional.? microphone.?)
i just wanted to add here. i got caught in a really bad thunderstorm last night while on my motorcycle with my opo in my jeans pocket. i rode for about 5 minutes in the worst thunderstorm i've ever ridden in, i was completely soaked and the opo got it as well. it was stil on and acting fine so i threw it under the seat and continued home and haven't shut the phone off yet and it's still fine.
i'd say the phone at least has a nano coating. i always worried about my nexus 5 because i knew this day would come at some point where i'd get stuck in a storm with my phone in my pocket and not be able to pull over. look slike the opo will do just fine.

I once used my Nexus5 for almost an hour in pure rain. It got so extremely wet, you can't imagine. I already thought I'd had to buy a new one. Nope. It's still working.
(Yes I had to stay in the rain. I was at the army there.)
I was taking a shot REALLY next to the water when a wave hit a half of my phone and it was underwater (but still in my hands) for less than a second. Nothing happened. I don't think it's waterproof, but somehow it resist

do you think it is possible for someone to check for IP for a specific device (like me to check my phone for IP##).?
maybe someone would like to push his device for testing
Don't get your hopes up too high people,
Friend of mine actually broke his OPO this way after 2 days (biking in a heavy rain storm).
The speakers were completely soaked and couldn't play anything till they dried. Everything seemed fine after the phone dried but it couldn't charge any more thus rendering the phone useless.
So anyway be careful out there! You never know if your device is just as water resistant as in this video, my friend already had bad luck so don't jinx it haha.

In my opinion you are only fortune, try a second time you will see that the OPO will die.
but do you usually walk on the streets without the shoes?? where do you live??
Consider this: you can have unprotected sex with someone who has herpes and not get it, but would you chance it? Didn't think so. It's not waterproof because it's not waterproof, you just got lucky.

can't be, all waterproof devices has rubber plugs on ports: audio, microusb, this doesn't.
here is a teardown for the OnePlus, doesn't seem to have rubber and protections against water in any part:
https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/OnePlus+One+Teardown/26484
notice that the microusb port give complete access to water to electronics inside, it is either luck for sometime (what happened an hour later? is the OPO still working?) or it was treated with waterproof material.
then compare it with the Galaxy S5, where you can easily see rubber protections around parts that reach to the outside, camera, back, etc:

The correct term is water resistant, not proof. And I don't even believe it have water resistant nano coating until officially confirmed by OPO. And they would not neglect to advertise that feature if they spent money on it.
NO! this phone has no seals in it at all! you will kill your phone sooner or later. hell i had a s5 and still didnt put it under water. dont do it ppppppl
Hope your charging port doesn't corrode, especially since the opo doesn't have wireless charging... cool video though. Makes me feel like i dont have to baby my baby as much as i do!
I feel like the headline of this should be changed so that people who are just skimming the headlines won't get the wrong idea and drown their phones :/
Sent via quantum entanglement, focused through my OnePlus One.
I agree the title is misleading. The phone is not water proof, there's no gasket on the back cover, no nano coating, and no port covers. It's just glass fused to the midframe with a tightly fit back which makes somewhat resistant to water, but there's no ingress protection so no dunking your phone.

Received phone back after screen fix - and it looks like this!!!

I received my phone back from eGlobal after waiting two months for the screen to be fixed (had to go back to China).
Upon unpacking it, I immediately noticed the uneven oled. It's very hard to photograph, but there is a rectangular bulge and generally looks very uneven. Compared to my wife's s7e and it's totally smooth.
Do you think they used a non-samsung screen replacement (if this exists) or is it just a shabby install job?
Apart from some flickering when switching it on (for about a minute), I haven't noticed any issues. The unevenness is only visible from certain angles. However, the resell value has taken a hit, and I'm afraid it won't last if the screen is some cheap no-brand.
What's your take on it?

Sorry what? I'd get it repaired again. This is one reason why I never buy overseas units, just in case the repairs take long
Wow doesn't seem like an "official" repair to me. I doubt Samsung would approve that.
When I got my Galaxy S3 screen repaired back in the days, it came back perfect (except for the few scratches the plastic back cover already had). No fingerprints or dirt. The screen looked as good as what you would get with a brand new, out of the box, phone
I wouldn't accept the repair. Should be as it was new or near enough. But the flickering you mention sounds like a big no no. At least make a complaint. Don't feel you need to put up with shoddy work. Hard to see from your pictures though.

Yes, that's another thing - it was covered in fingerprints and dirty marks, and the boxed is completely scratched.
Total amateurs.
I complained about it, so let's see if they respond. I assume not.
As predicted I am now being ignored by eGlobal
Here is a better picture of the lumpy screen:

That's why is better to have damage cover and phone replaced in case of accident than screen replaced by some dodgy company. In newest phones is very difficult to have screen replaced properly. I wouldn't accept this repair at all. Ask for refund, or re repair.
Shabby job

I didn't pay anything as it's less than 6 months so still under warranty.
However, lots of hassle sending back to retailer in China only to be told a month later that it's a manufacturer fault and that they will need to send it to the manufacturer.
I doubt they did that - an official Samsung repair centre anywhere in the world would not "fix" the phone to such a low standard.
Screen was dead, so I assume they replaced the oled display. How they can do it so badly is beyond me.
On top of being cosmetically ugly now, it is lagging like crazy. Every 20 seconds there is a 3 second delay regardless what you are doing. Even after I factory reset it. Disaster.
I'm now looking at being without my phone for another two months - if they take it back at all. So far no luck getting a response.

I had a defected S7E but it was like a week old, didn't agree with fixing it asked for exchanged right on the spot, after a month got Samsung approval for an exchange or money return. As i understand you can do this all 2 year of warranty. Even if the shop if Samsung approved I would never trust it's water resistance.

they probably replace the lcd , and use back your same glass , no samsung standard is not like that , because they will replace the whole screen set for you , much easier and fuss free
That's nasty. Get the guy to redo it.
Your phone has been repaird (terrebly wrong) by just replacing the glass and then glued again to the lcd. Or they replaced your screen with a refurb.
