[Q] CMD to build recovery partition - Windows 8 General

Lets start with this....
Incase above didn't work.... http://youtu.be/xy816n5AfZc
I put windows 10 tech preview on my hp laptop, i did recoverydrive.exe to build a recovery on my flash drive and then deleted the recovery partition from hard drive to save space (major PITA in hindsight) but too late now. Anyway, i cant get it to recover from flash drive now and it is pissing me off. I have tried putting in flash, restart, it asks what language for keyboard and then the menus begin. Hitting recovery from.... Restarts the pc and process starts again. Hitting recovery opens hp recovery environment, but don't let me select usb. Hitting escape while starting up and pressing F9 to boot from..... and select usb device gives me same select language and click on anything after that to continue same endless cycle of nothingness.
My flash drive shows as G:
And contains:
boot (file folder)
efi (file folder)
sources (file folder)
bootmgr (file)
bootmgr.efi (EFI file)
reagent.xml (xml document)
Anyone want to put forth input to above youtube link that would let me build a refresh partition on my C:\ from G:\ please?

In my eyes the video linked to contains a bad avdvice: the System Restore image shouldn't be saved to default Windows drive [C:], but onto another HDD drive / partition.
The System Restore image created with means Windows 8 offers, is simply a snapshot of specific portions of the Windows drive [C:], consists of folders Backup nnnn-nn-nn, Catalog, Logs, SPPMetadataCache and file MediaId. This System Restore image can be replayed at any time via Windows 8 inbuilt means.
The System Restore image created as shown before has nothing to do with a System Refresh offered by Windows 8, where Windows 8 indeed will be freshly installed. Hence you need the original Windows 8 Installation disk which contains the folders/files you enumerated: boot, efi , sources, etc.
If these installation folders/files are present (copied onto) on a bootable device, i.e. those devices which UEFI / BIOS lists and from which you can choose , then you can Refresh your Windows 8 installation.

HP don't use the same terms as Microsoft. They throughout speak of System Recovery, whereas Microsoft distinguish between System Recovery and System Refresh. As I've noticed, HP always mean System Refresh in the sense of Microsoft.
Don't own an HP computer, so I don't know how "HP Recovery Manager" does its job.

BTW: Performing an HP System Recovery (Windows 8) in detail is described here:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?cc=de&lc=de&dlc=de&docname=c03489643

I did the process from that hp site. That is how I found the escape on startup trick and F9 commands, still does language, pick an option (recover from something, exit to tech preview, advanced options.....) Anything I press sends me to restart, select language, select option and that cycle just keeps looping until I remove the flash drive. I'm at my end of patients and ready to take it to Microsoft store with the box it came in that shows the OS that was OEM installed and tell them to re-install it.

Installing XP sp3 using external HDD

well..i go through a lot of forum here and there but failing to find the installation on HTC shift without using external hdd. I got no external cd-rom drive ...tats why i go so much trouble using external hdd for installation. This is not my original but from http://wiki.eeeuser.com/windowsxpusb
THE Whole process is a success!!! I installed the xp sp3 the first day i got HTC SHIFT japanese version(few days ago)
OK THIS IS what i do.
MAKING HDD BOOTABLE
1. prepare a windows xp sp3 not tablet edition(in image also can) , a bootable external hdd, and {WPI.exe, tabletPCPATch both from
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=465525}for later use when installing driver
2.make ur external hdd(mine is 30g) bootable and put the source windows inside the hdd.(how to do this--->see below) I m doing this using desktop windows xp instead of vista.
You will need a special tool to copy the Installationfiles and making the usb hdd - usb_multiboot_10.zip
Unpack to any folder. THE PATH TO YOUR FOLDER MUST BE SIMPLE AND WITHOUT SPACES! (ex. c:\usb_multiboot_10)
Insert USB HDD/flash disk
ALL DATA ON YOUR STICK WILL BE ERASED! Please back up before running USB_MultiBoot_10.cmd!
Run USB_MultiBoot_10.cmd. follow text description.
Format utility will apear. Choose NTFS for >=4Gb usb flash and FAT16 for other, Start format, Close after finishing.
NOTE: If you are doing this from a Vista machine, you may need to run PeToUSB.exe as adminstrator in order for this program to recognize the jump drive. (Right click PeToUSB.exe > Properties > Compatibility > “Run this program as an administrator” checked.)
Set option 0 to use USB HDD instead of a USB stick/ SD card.
Then select the windows source in the option (in my case , i mout the xp sp3 image in drive, and select the windows folder)
Choose 3 after setting all other options. It will create the image and write it to the USB HDD as well as making the USBHDD bootable.
Answer Yes to all questions that come up (these vary depending on options selected).
When it finishes copying, remove your usb HDD and insert it in the HTC SHIFT.
When you turn on the HTC SHIFT, hold down FN+F10 to choose the boot device and select the USB HDD of yours. You'll need to do this at each reboot until XP is fully installed and you've logged in.
Choose Text installation at first time and GUI INSTALLATION AFTER REBOOT TWICE! - ( Choose step 1 to start installing, after reboot choose step two, after continued install press step 2 AGAIN to log into XP - As soon as you arrive at the Windows XP Desktop you can safely remove the USBHDD
IMPORTANT! DO NOT REMOVE USB STICK UNTIL YOU'LL SEE XP's LOGIN SCREEN!
INSTALLING DRIVER AND PATCHTABLET
after installed xp, apply the tabletpatch and continue with yours driver installation in previous thread.
for your reference here

and here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=436982
I last all the process below 3 hours if you know what to do.Below is the picture after installing all the driver with stardock windows interface.

report if you work this way too...SO FROM THIS DAY ONWARD , SAT GOODBYE TO YOUR CD ROM DRIVE. since i can boot from usb drive..and of coz i can boot from usb flash disk or sd card. the only thing is the bios must recognise the bootable device or else nothing can go on.
Damn, I should have known that two months ago. I ended up borrowing a external CD-rom player from work after many a day of too little sleep
Well done!
hal.dll? Can anyone help?
Hello, can onyone help?
i did try the following with: xphome, xphome + sp2, xphome +sp3 ! No success.
i did it all, like decriped.
Window installation starts from usb-stick, fomats the hdd and later it stops with:
windows could not be started, following file is not find:
<windows root>\system32\hal.dll
install a new exemplar of this file again
What can I do?
Thanks for your help!
Wolf
u have to choose the 2nd choice in the setting after boot from usb-hdd . u have to continuously boot from usb hdd till u login safely.at first i failed this step too.
which means the whole installation will using usb-hdd(boot from it)
thank you!
does it mean, i should not! boot/install from usb_stick? i should boot from external usb-hdd, and not from usb-stick?
no no....usb-stick or usb-hdd will be the same. i mean the whole process must be boot on usb device till the installation finish.
"<windows root>\system32\hal.dll " error u got mayb means ur installation not finish...so.
from now on..reinstall whole process again
remeber
Choose step 1 to start installing, after reboot (dun go hdd )choose step two, after continued install press step 2 AGAIN to log into XP - As soon as you arrive at the Windows XP Desktop you can safely remove the USBHDD
but this thread is refer to hdd only.. i didnt try the usb stick but i think the procedure wil be the same
thank you!!!
i did start from usb-stick, than there was the failed-information, than i did boot from usb.stick ( step 2 ) again. later i got the standard xp-sceen, my mouse was working and i did remove the stick. but afeter new start, there was a mistake and the system did not start agein.
now i have started the process again from beginning. i will give you the information, what happened.
1st step: failure
2. step: now the standard xp installation screen is seen.
i must wait now....
if someone is interested :
How to install Vista onto an external Hard Drive
it's not FROM ... but ONTO... but you can do both .. with 2 separate partitions on the same disk.
terrible:
now i have had the windows xp home sreen. i coul do somethink with my mouse. but i could not install SP2 ( you have not the administrating rights )
and if i restart: there comes: no starting, because there is a problem with the configuration of internal hdd . hdd could not be read. check path and hardware.
? and now? please give me your ideas.
Thank you.
Hi,
Thank you for this method.
Win xp installation started from USB stick and HDD formatted successfully.
However, once start expanding the files I got the error:
'The following value in the .SIF file used by setup is corrupted or missing:
Value 0 on the line in section [SourceDiskFiles] with key "binifix4.cmd."
Setup cannot continue. To quit setup, press F3'
any idea?
Thanks in advance for the help.
Update to the above .. it seems that was because I used my old xp CD (SP zero!!) .. I've repeated the steps with other CD with SP2 and worked fine ..
Note: first one is professional and second one home .. probably this is the cause as well.
Thanks,

To those having problems

this is to EVERYONE that is having an issue using Paragon to partition their card to ext2/ext3. simple solution and it will NEVER fail. are you ready for this???
USE LINUX
now that that's out of the way you can go
here to download the .iso
or
here to order a live CD of the latest ubuntu distribution you will have to register an account but it's free and free to get the CD shipped to your home(AND YOU GET STICKERS!!!!)
this is the EASIEST way to partition your card. before starting backup everything on your card
1. after downloading the .iso burn it to a cd/dvd
2. reboot your computer with the disk still in the cd drive
3. boot to the CD(your computer may or may not be set up to try the cd first so f10 or f12 will usually get you the boot menu)
4. choose your language

}
5. choose the first option "try ubuntu without any changes to your computer"(or something like that)
6. wait for the computer to start up which might take a while as it is loading the OS from your cd drive
7. plug your phone into your computer and mount it
8. click System>Administration>Partition Editor
9. in the top right there is a little box that will let you choose what drive you want to edit(PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU CHOOSE THE CORRECT ONE)
10. after you have chosen your sd card it will appear in the main window with a horizontal graph above it showing your usage
11. right-click on the card in the main window and unmount it
12. go to the top and click Device>Create New Partition Table
13. you now have a totally blank sd card that is unformatted and not recognisable by windows or your phone
14. right-click on the unallocated space and create a new partition and format it as a primary partition and FAT 32, resize to the size you want to be FAT 32
15. right-click on the unallocated space and create a new partition and format as primary partition and make sure it is ext2/ext3 pending the ROM. this is the size of your apps partition
16. at the top click apply and it will go through the steps of partitioning your card.
if you get any errors for any reason at all you probably did something wrong, but check the details and post the error message here and i will answer it as soon as i can.
most times an error will occur because you forgot to unmount the drive from the partition editor. i know it seems stupid but you have to mount the card so the computer sees it, then unmount it so it can be edited.
screen shots will be up tomorrow when i wake up. please post here if you cannot figure this out
Just did this and I can confirm it worked flawlessly. Directions are clear and to the T.
Thanks a lot for this man, once my business starts making some money I'll float you a little present via PayPal, cuz this was just brilliant.
DON'T EVEN THINK ABOUT USING PARAGON - USE THIS GUIDE INSTEAD
Also, Ubuntu looks cool as hell!
glad this helped someone out
after my new 8g card arrived yesterday, i tried to format it and make the partitions via the rom manager app, which failed. dunno why, but it didn't do the trick. so i stumbled across this guide and it's idiot-proof so thx alot. did the trick and everything works nicely

[Q] i have problem for hd mini

i have problem i follow method rom photonic CM 7.2 nand boot but ihave screen stuck on
nand id:0x5500bcec maker=0xec device=0xbc
press VOLUME UP for RECOVERY
press VOLUME DOWN for FASTBOOT
ERROR: cannot read boot image header
ERROR: could not do normal boot. Reverting to fastboot mode.
ENTERING FASTBOOT MODE
udc_start()
then i follow this
1 Preparation
1a. Extract the LK_16.Jul.2012.rar or ("CWM LK Boot Recovery (16-July-2012).zip" for the iPlasm’s Photonic ROM) to anywhere on your computer. Note this file is updated from time to time too just like the roms.
1b. Open that folder and unzip (extract) the subfolder "LK-Photonic-SD.rar" ("LK Boot SDCard.zip" for iPlasm’s Photonic ROM). Copy each of those three files (without folder) directly to the Root of SDCard ie. Lk.bin, startup.txt and HARET_Photon7227.exe.
1c. Also copy gapps-ics-20120317-signed.zip and the CM9 rom file(s).zip to SDCard (plus all updates if any are specified for the ROM) directly to the Root of SDCard too. Do not unzip (extract) these .zip files. If you don’t copy these zip files now, you can still do later after the NAND has been installed except you have to mount the USB drive with the cable via CWM Recovery LK Boot.
1d. Make sure your GPS is working in WM6.5 (to prevent the GPS issue).
1e. Make sure you have your official Stock ROM for your device (country specific) in case you need to restore to WM6.5. Refer to Schlund's instructions headed under How to go back to WinMobile NAND-BOOT
2 Install Munjeni's CWM Recovery LK Boot (16 July 2012)
2a. Disconnect the cable then in the Phone, Open File Explorer and navigate to SDCard and touch at HaRET. File Explorer at this step means the HD Mini file explorer for Windows Mobile 6.5 (the original WM6.5 operating system already on your phone). HARET.exe must be run from the phone. If you don't follow instruction 1b and 1c properly (to put the necessary files on the SDcard), then this step won't work.
2b. The screen will reboot and show the following (or something similar) in dark blue text. Don't panic as it is a normal part of the procedure!:
nand id:0x5500bcec maker=0xec device=0xbc
press VOLUME UP for RECOVERY
press VOLUME DOWN for FASTBOOT
ERROR: cannot read boot image header
ERROR: could not do normal boot. Reverting to fastboot mode.
ENTERING FASTBOOT MODE
udc_start()
2c. Since you are now in fastboot mode, you need to install the Android Debug Bridge (ADB) driver files. To do this, just reconnect the USB cable between the phone and the PC. You may be asked on the PC for the drivers needed to connect the phone. If so, they are in the Google Windows USB driver folder (in the LK_16.Jul.2012.rar (Munjeni)/ "CWM LK Boot Recovery (16-July-2012).zip" (iPlasm).
2d. Wait very patiently for a few minutes whilst the drivers are installed (it might seem it is not doing anything in this time but you need to wait). You can check if they are installed by opening the Windows device manager and looking for a fastboot device listed under the USB hardware. If not, then do a manual install in Windows.
2e. Once the Windows notification pops up to say the device drivers have been installed (assuming the PC needs to install the drivers), then click on the PC file “Update.bat” (this file is in the LK_16.July.2012.rar/CWM LK Boot Recovery (16-July-2012).zip). In the menu that comes up, install options (ie. First do (1) then select (2)). What this does is it automatically erases boot recovery, userdata, system, cache, misc, and recovery.
my mobile screen stuck this

Everything you did is perfect!
now, in the last (2e.), What windows you're using and 32bit or 64bit?
after that, It seems you haven't entered (FastBoot) or it haven't been probably entered Fastboot in the picture, It should be written under line 5 or 6.
When written similar (entering fastbootmode) then you can install by clinking Update.bat, and do the instructions...
And remember... every time when you want to install new cwm recovery you should be in Fastboot mode.
Have a nice try...
What windows you're using and 32bit or 64bit?
my windows 7 32 bit but no noting all popup
now i follow click update.bat and choose 1 that right
how long for waiting device
thank you for your coment
This image shows that your phone hasn't been connected to PC or the ADB drivers aren't installed correctly.
And this installation take about 3 minutes. But this < Waiting for device > means your phone either not connected or adb hasn't been ready...
I was used Windows XP 32Bit, your windows732bit should work also
hello my friend thank you your comment i still problem
i have new question i pull my sdcard from mobile
and put in card reader my file is
is it correct? i follow step
3.Copy 3.Copy cm-7-20120618-UNOFFICIAL-photonic-r10.zip, the GAPPS file and the content of lk-photonic-sd.rar archive to the root of your sdcard and run HaRET from your device, the GAPPS file and the content of lk-photonic-sd.rar archive to the root of your sdcard and run HaRET from your device
on 3.Copy cm-7-20120618-UNOFFICIAL-photonic-r10.zip must extract yes or no
thank you very must:good:
Yes, all is perfect!, only you should not extract GAPPS.
How it's going on?
if i want go back to first step or windows phone
how can i do? pls
thank you sir

Windows 11 on windows yogabook

Does anyone here have made the update to windows 11 on a windows yogabook ?
I've try this and with help of MediaCreationTool.bat i was able to overpass the processor compatibility.
It donwload the update, run all the install but at the end of this process i Come with an error and the update process colse to delete all this work, coming with just a windows 10 after all.
When the update finish i have 2 type of error
attempted write to readonly memory
Or
Error in safe_os with an error on Boot operator
Don't know why i have this error and how to fix it.
I try on a fresh install with my old files and already try to à New clean install, but all this try i already have an error....
Does anybody here have this error and can clear it to made the update or run the windows 11 update without problems on a yogabook ?
Nope, I was not facing any issues with the Install. (sorry, don't ask for a guide as there already are hundreds of it. Google it)
Furthermore, I am already testing WSA and it's surprisingly working fluid. You obviously get the 4GB warning but once WSA is fully loaded it's "bingo". (check OneDrive & Adobe Draw running side by side). I had 5 Apps running at the same time but the process usage in the Taskmanager was not freaking out (if you compare it to Bluestacks etc) !
And yes, pen works perfectly in the Android Apps...

Thanks for your answer, my problem is not how to made the w11 update, cause i already install it on another pc, but why i have this error, i already try three time to install it and already have the Same error (First time i try to give my files and i have this error, thinking this can be the problem i made the Same process but with a clean install, same result and last time i totally reinstall my yogabook with a clean install and try to launch w11 update on it (with MediaCreationTool.bat each time) and i have the Same result)
Each time the donwload process go to the end and the install work fine (i have no reboot du ring all the update) but when i came to the final (and First) boot of w11 i have this error on a Black screen (old blue screen of windows) and the pc uninstall the update and come back to w10.....
No idea where and why you struggle... to test the WSA I just downloaded the latest Insider Beta... The Device Manager detected everything, absolutely everything except the Multimode Halo Keyboard obviously...

The error is in the message... you are trying to install Win11 on a MBR Partition. Win11 needs an UEFI GPT Partition... Google for it on how to convert it. Microsoft has even an own tool for it https://docs.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/deployment/mbr-to-gpt

I'm already on GPT Partition, but i'm not on UEFI, only on EFI... Can I make an update of this parameter ?
I made the bios update find on lenovo support site whitch is specified to be BIOS/UEFI
When i check thé TPM compatibility on the pc the statut is OK and version is 2.0....
When i' m on bios i can't enable secure boot statut...
I have no idea. It worked perfectly from scratch on my Yogabook. I assume you updated the Bios from here

Did you try to start in safe mode and run "mdsched.exe" ? (Usually pressing F8 right after the lenovo bios logo appears, but you will probably need and external usb keyboard for this)
@jamespmi
Thanks for your time and your help.
For the BIOS update Yes it directly come from the lenovo site (the only update aviable so i can't make mistake).
I just try to make a full run of mdsched.exe in safe mode (really hard to keep a usb keyboard cause my 2 wireless keyboard wasn't reconnised in safe mode) and no error after the check...
I really don't understand what can block the W11 update on my yogabook.
Also try to install with desableing all non essentiel app and service at startup..... No more result.....
The only option i do not try is to make the update in safe mode (don't know if it's possible...)
Hey,
typing this from my W11 yoga book... i used the reg tweak as described in this article and just started upgrading by opening the ISO in W10 https://pureinfotech.com/install-windows-11-unsupported-pc/
Needed to install some drivers again, but overall it works okay. Just disable all animations. Because our old tablet just can't handle those any more.
is there any benefit in using vw11 instead of w10 in performance terms? I would go for w11 but only performance driven as WSL is running fine ;-)

PLEASE HELP! Trying to recover lost Mi9T data and almost there

Gentlemen. And Ladies.
First of all I'd like to all thank you for all your work and input as community of xda-developers.
I came here seeking for your help. I am trying to recover the pictures and videos I lost after accidentally performing factory reset. Since the factory reset I havent been using the phone so as least data as possible is overwritten. My phone is rooted and have Busybox installed.
So far I was able to copy a user data disk (I hope I chose correct one: '/dev/block/bootdevice/by-name/userdata' ) via adb from the device to my computer as a file 'userdata.raw' which has around 111gb. I've tried to mount the 'userdata.raw' as a virtual disk using OSFMount - this resulted in appearance of D: disk partition but it's not accessible via Windows Explorer (as it was corrupted). Afterwards I tried to recover data from that mounted D: drive using ActiveUNDELETE but the program doesnt see that D: Disk in the volumes list. Now I am trying to recover using qphotorec which is able to see D: drive as f2fs system. I'm also trying to restore the data directly from that 'userdata.raw' file using qphotorec. But both of these methods result only in outputting the one file: 'f60340268.swf' of around 3gb in size. Overall overview of the whole process is attached on the overwiew screenshot.

Now I think there are three scenarios but may be more:
I chose the wrong userdata disk while copying it via adb to on my PC. I picked '/dev/block/bootdevice/by-name/userdata'.
On the screenshot above you can see all the other locations which 'adb shell' -> 'su' -> 'df' outputs (number 1. window in left top corner)
I am doing something wrong while mounting the 'userdata.raw' as a virtual disk thus ActiveUNDELETE can't see it. Or doing something wrong while recovering the data directly from 'userdata.raw'
Contents of '/dev/block/bootdevice/by-name/userdata' is encrypted which results in receiving odd 'f60340268.swf'
file weighing around 3gb. You can see both the contents of 'f60340268.swf' and'userdata.raw' after running strings command on them. See attached Strings screenshots.
It feels like I am almost there but I got stuck and dont know how to approach this any further.
For copying user data disk from mi9t to my pc I followed guides I found here: https://stackoverflow.com/a/41397418
Windows won't explore raw files, you have to use linux or some software to recover your data, like minitool mobile recovery

I tried minitool mobile recovery but no luck. I also tried minitool and diskdrill but same results - both of these apps dont see the monuted userdata.raw as D: drive. As it was not there. Windows Disk Management doesnt see it neither.
The only app that's able to see it is qphotorec but it determines file system type as f2fs
anyone?
