Storage shown not accurate?? - Verizon Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I just picked up my s5 and was playing around. I went to the storage section under settings and it's showing that 5.63 gb is being taken up by misc files. When i click on that tab the files shown do not add up to anywhere close to 5.63 gb.
What could be the cause and how do i get the storage back?

That's accurate, unfortunately. It's TouchWiz and it's "features".

Jeez, I ran a debloating program and its still showing over 5gb!! I'd go to an AOSP rom but i use my camera quite a bit and dont want to lose the quality.

Actually, without an unlocked bootloader, you can't switch to an AOSP rom. There are, a least, some extremely de-bloated options in the development section.

What would you like to see in a custom ROM?

As you know, the fact that bootloaders are unlocked leaves an open door for third party firmwares (custom ROMs) to be applied to the phone.
Usually custom ROMs expand the functionalities of the phone and correct some of the software shortcomings. Even though the phone is only recently in the market, there may be some feature wishes and some complaints already.
In short, what features shoud a custom ROM add and what shortcomings should it correct?
I will start:
With the not-so-last gen processor the Play has, it is probably necessary to be able to overclock it.
I would like a minimal ROM (aka without bloatware) as it seems that the booting time of stock ROMs is incredibly high and it is caused by bloatware.
I don't have the phone yet (it's on its way ^^) but I have read things about the brightness setting being too dim and not changeable.

Doesn't sound right. I usually have over 200 free when the phones idle and no where near full when using FPSE etc.
Disable auto brightness and can set it manual (and increase more brightness).

As mentioned, a bloat free rom. Pure Android port maybe?
There should be another loader than play, something thats able to load psx, snes, mame (single games) and every other games u installed by opening the pad. With the possibility to add/remove stuff after u install it.
Overclock is mentioned. (Only 1500 in quadrant original??) FPS is okay though.
(I hope wolves - sunderland is canceled, so we have something to look forward too.)

I think he's refering to Internal Storage rather than RAM.
Since we suffer from very low internal storage, it would be great if a new ROM would provide something similar to the app2sd application (forces apps to install all data to SD). Might be a big ask though?

Sure you can move most app data to the SD from settings AFAIK. Bit of a pain though so installing to SD automatically would be nice.

Yuck, I got that wrong I thought app2sd allowed the footprint part of the installation to be mostly moved to SD. Kinda hoped the 30Mb of Asphalt etc cud be reduced to <1Mb or sumthin. Daft now that I think of it.
I agree then, no point in app2sd cuz I manually move the data when I install stuff anyway.
Admin, can someone wipe my replies to this cuz it's only taking up space on what shud be a valuable thread!!
1, faster boot-up time.
2, ability to pick the games you want to have in the games launcher (or a new launcher).
3, widgets from desire.
4, R/L buttons as camera buttons when active.
5, R/L buttons as volume when camera not active, i find the original volume buttons a pain, even more when you have a case/shell on
6, brighter screen for them sunny days.

Nope im talking about ram. If you guys have issues with storage, fire up adb, connect your device. And input.
adb shell
$ pm setinstalllocation2
$ exit
This will force all apps to be allowed to install to the sd card, and games like ashpalt take less than a mb

As I hate the original android app2sd... as all widgets get broken by this method...
From what I've heard, since Verizon has fallen asleep.
1. Bare bone rom. Like to where you have to install gapps and other stuff. Only to have the apps android comes with.
2. R1 as take picture and L1 as focus.
3. Ability to add any shortcut to the "game app," forgot what it was called. Whether it be a app or game.
4. No overclock applied. Let the user add a overclocking app if they want.
5. Power control widget in the status bar.
6. And supper user of coarse

i want a stock android tbh, STOCK; and of-course, an overclocking module
id love an option to disable data traffic automatically when the phones screen is turned off, if this could be built into a custom stock gingerbread rom. the reason that would be awsome is cause it would double your batterylife and save using a widget and having to manually turn it on and off wasting time.
also R1 for taking picture and L1 for focus
having a battery percentage in the status bar would be amazing ( i know theres apps to do this but again if it was built in the rom as stock)
I would love a better keyboard, i came from an iphone and androids keyboard is just not accurate enough.
thanks in advance whoever takes the time to make this possible i understand it takes alot of time and effort to help others but rest assured it also makes many people happy . I wish sony would have released this phone in a more polished state it feels half finished and fragmented with all the apps and games markets

I can agree with that

Is stock good enough for you?

I've been playing with this tablet for about a day now and I must say, I don't think I've ever had the feeling that I didn't need to Root for any reason, but this tablet just works so well out of the box that I'm not missing anything in terms of performance or applications.
I was just wondering if anyone decided to forgo the flashing/rooting/roming process because the tablet just works.
Amen brother. So good out of the box... Just tasted Google Play Music as well... Wow! Almost don't even need Nova Launcher with stock JB 4.3 haha I might not bother rooting this time round unless something really uber comes along
Well I do think it is very nice out the box. Smooth and snappy. So, yes stock is good enough for me right now. I have root and recovery, so if some custom rom comes along and it looks interesting, I may try it out. However, until that image is released, everybody is going to be pretty close to stock. The only thing I don't like is the toggles/tiles don't work like they should. I tap the wifi tile and it opens the settings for wifi, not turn it on. Not a big deal tho...
Nope. I need the custom re-boot menu and quiet hours and I can no longer live without Pie.
THe stock worked perfectly tho. I had no issues at all.
Gotta have root for the six axis app so I can game it up with my ps3 c controller

Action Launcher doesn't count in this discussion, personally. It's basically good enough to kick the tar out of launchers on just about any framework you'll ever find (although it does look a tad out of place on my otherwise Sense-running HTC One).
Mostly yes, but I still root because I enjoy using Greenify and there are some other behaviors that require more permissions than stock Android will give us. The inclusion of the app permission manager though is quite wonderful.

Long hold. They reversed the behavior from 4.2. Short tap = settings, Long tap = toggle on/off. Quite honestly, I prefer it in the 4.3 way better. I really don't turn off WiFi or Bluetooth, and having to go settings -> wireless -> bluetooth to get to the bluetooth settings was a bit much.
I root for the couple of apps that need it, but I run stock otherwise. Did on my original N7 as well.

I am happy with my stock setup right now. I am unlocked and rooted though. I also tried a couple of kernels but I am back to stock kernel. Same with ROMs. I will continue trying new ROMs but will keep using stock for now. My ultimate ROM will be a stable/clean ROM with Tablet UI.

Stock rom will be good enough until all if not all issues are resolved with the CM. Till then, ijust have my N7 rooted for titanium back up and other misc apps that require root.
Stock is good enough for my needs, but I installed CM anyway just to get that little extra

Running stock + Root + Extra Power Menu
At least right now that is good enough since its so quick. I'd like to try out other roms or have a good kernel but going to wait til more testing is done with what is out there and get some of the bugs worked out as I've tried them but get mixed results for performance and stability. Right now stability is key and performance is very good as is stock, but more is always better, in due time
I find I miss the little things CM had. For example when downloading. In stock the arrow stays there constantly lit, it doesn't do the animation.
Thing is, it might look and feel smooth, but it can always get better. Rooting and custom ROMS just simply allow the further enhancements, customization, smoothness, and potential to save battery life. I really don't see any reason not to Root/use custom ROMS for any case as long as your comfortable with the process. Maybe if the device was used for business i could understand that maybe, but for personal usage why not take advantage of whats out there instead of settling for less? It's not like it voids your warranty anyways when you can always restore it to stock before turning it in.
To be honest I cant see how anyone can live without some of the great things that require root
Linaro/03 optimized kernels
Overclocking
PER APP DPI
Trickstermod
Rom Toolbox
Lux autobrightnes (If you read books on this puppy it's a must)
Fully featured equalizer - seriously this needs to be universal on all devices
SD Maid
Titanium backup
Custom toggles, and AOKP ribbon controls
Custom boot animations
...Stickmount (don't you need root for this?)
And thats just off the top of my head stuff that I personally use all the time. So I guess most of that stuff could be run on a "stock" setup, but where is the fun in that. What is the point in investing in suck an awesome dev device, and not loading up on the fantastic tools that have been made possible through the hard work of XDA's members?

Try a different browser, dolphin is awesome, and shows you tons of details when you download files. The notification icon itself is very unobtrusive.
Except that recent versions of dolphin have made it horribad. I found it so slow as to be unusable and have moved to chrome. Dolphin also force quits on my phone all the time for no apparent reason. Used to love it.

[Q] Stock is way too laggy but I want its features

Okay, so I'm looking for a little input here because I am torn. I was an avid flasher and supporter of the AOSP ROMs until I got this phone. I used CM and PA and a few others just to see what I liked but none of them offered quite the features and stability of pure stock but this is where I am really struggling.
For the longest time this phone was super fast. It did what I wanted it to do when I wanted it to do it. I'm not much for the keyboard so I installed swype and that seems to be where my problems began. Since day 1 the messaging app was always a disappointment. It would lag, not open fast or when it did open in a message i would have to close it to get to the messages list. When I added swype to the mix it just sucked. The touch responsiveness was late and slow, a lot of times the keyboard would freeze up and i wouldn't be able to do anything for a minute until it would unfreeze. I just don't see why it's doing this because it has 2 gb of ram and a beast processor.
Anything you guys could add to help? I love the phone but it's getting to be about as slow to use as the Droid Eris
Pretty sure this thread is supposed to be in the Q&A section. Don't be surprised to see it closed. Regarding your issue, to say your G2 is as slow as the Eris is a bit of a stretch. I don't doubt you're experiencing some lag, but saying it's as slow as a phone with 288MB RAM and clocked at 528 MHz is a little ridiculous.
You say you encountered these problems after installing Swype. Perhaps get rid of that keyboard. I personally use the stock Google keyboard as it can be downloaded from the Play Store.
And seeing as you're rooted, perhaps look through the development section for your particular variant to see if there are any optimized stock-based ROMs that might help speed things up.
Flex rom + g.lewarne kernel.

What stock features? IR Blaster and Camera are available. Knock wake works.
I only used stock about 24 hours, but I didn't see much else compelling.. Quick Slide? Ugh. Quick Apps or whatever? Useless. Navbar customization? CM or AOKP can do that, etc.
If u have lag on stock, use a task killer to clear RAM when screen is turned off... Also root and use the fstrim app to TRIM your G2.... Mine never lags after this...

I feel as though I shouldn't have to clear ram considering there is 2GB of it.
And even though there is that much ram shouldn't android manage that in the background.
I do realize that TRIM isn't implemented in android until 4.3 but still...

It's more or less the camera that I really want. The aosp one is so minimalistic and lacking features but all of the ported lg cameras have features that don't work or are baked out of it to make it work. I also really enjoy knowing my phone can work 100% of the time without SOD's and no GPS (I do a lot of traveling in my free time). I need to know that if I am stranded in a town I don't know of I can pull out my G2 and call someone without any feedback or echoes and no drops in data

So the one feature you want, stock camera, works fine in other ROMs. I believe there is a few things disabled in it but not much. Here's the list from the stock camera thread:
No Object Tracking. You know that thing where a grid of little boxes shows up on the screen and one of them will turn green as the camera focuses? That's missing.
No Audio Zoom. It's still enabled in the UI, but I've patched out all the methods relating to it, as they caused crashes.
No transparent navigation bar.
No rotating navigation buttons.
Performance tuning - it's possible that this will run slower than it would on an LG ROM. The LG rom includes a class called
(Not on the list on the thread) - Front-facing camera may or may not work
So yeah, object tracking is really the only functional change. Autofocus works fine, just not the little green boxes. Whatever the difference is. And avoid using the front camera.
AOSP camera is minimalistic, but what features are missing? Do you really need 10 scene modes? No. Let's be realistic, the AOSP camera isn't doing well with low light or close-up flash (blows the photo) so there are problems but overall it works okay. And the ported stock camera works fine except for one minor feature.
GPS works, no call echos, no drops, no SODs etc.. I have had none of these issues on AOKP. GPS there are libraries missing from the AOKP build, but the files to flash are right in the OP. Stock camera, Quick Remote, etc all works fine too. I can't speak for any other ROMs. Rohan32's AOKP 4.3 is the ROM I'm using.
Uninstall Swype (I and other people I know have lag issues with it eventually), use the Google keyboard. Use Nova Launcher (Nova Prime would be ideal) set animations there for very fast or off, install Screen off and Lock for Knock off feature and set it with the Double tap gesture in Nova. Install LagFix for TRIM and run it. Go to developer options and turn off all animations. Hope this helps.

Thanks. I don't have mine rooted because I want to keep stock full stock. But what I have found is that clearing the ram after shutting off the screen actually helps a lot. I have had much less lag since I did that.
Something funny happened today. I went into texts and set the auto delete to after 1000 texts. Talk about the problems that followed. My phone was completely worthless. Even after closing the app and then restarting the phone. I have over 5k texts in one conversation between my girlfriend and I so I thought that might be making the stock messaging app run slow. But the auto delete didn't work at all. After spending about 3 hours trying to get back into the app I had to turn it off before I could do anything...

Oh believe me I am fully aware of what rooting and flashing Roms and kernels does to my phone. I've been an avid android user for a while. Changing to row and interactive got rid of the very tiny bit of stutter I had once and a while. The "lag" is really just the the CPU waiting on the system to tell it to clock up. Stock profiles are too slow.

Definitely not. Leave it alone; everyone has those folders and I assure you they do not exist twice.
What makes me scratch my head is that both folders are the exact same size with the same content so I just don't understand why my phone needs double since it shows my storage at 17GB and want to free up some more space
One is a link to the other. They are not duplicated, they are one and the same files

Alright, think about it this way. Open your file explorer and check the size of either of the folders by looking at their properties. For instance, mine both show that they add up to 10GB. I've also got about 3-4GB of space being used for backups and my system partition, and even more for apps. So my guess? Probably using at least 20GB of my storage. Keep in mind that I have a 32GB phone. Now if I go to settings > storage, it shows that I have 12GB of free space, so it all adds up. If you do the math, I couldn't possibly be using 20GB total for both of those folders, so they have to just be different paths to the same location, and yours probably is, too.
My conclusion: if you delete one of those folders, nothing good can come of it. Look elsewhere and account for your system itself (I see you are using the stock firmware, which is quite large due to LG bloatware) and the apps you use. Check Settings > Storage and see what's using so much space.
Thanks for confirming everyone. I guess I need to browse my phone system with my PC to find where the real bloat is at. Yes the LG apps do take up a bit of space.

You might consider finding an AOSP ROM that fits your needs if you're looking for a bit more space. They tend to be a lot smaller than stock roms. Also, try clearing your cache.

Which is the best camera (paid or free or modded) for Lollipop AOSP roms ?

simple question - I have a lollipop based ROM and I know that I dont have the same drivers as XCam so quality will suffer.
But which camera app will give me the highest quality on Lollipop AOSP ? Do note that I'm not talking about which is the best app in terms of features, usability, etc. .... but simple image quality.
As of now, Google Camera seems to my (untrained) eyes as the best option. Sefnap's modded stock camera seems good, but on Lollipop it becomes a little unusable.
1. flash this
2. set it up..you can't set it up later..set up flash, focus, size etc..
3- install this
that's it
it you want to set it up later you have to "downgrade" it from app settings, then reinstall the 3.

Hmmm... Flashing this takes away the transparent soft key buttons and the color changing notification bar. They are both black now. Is this expected?
My god, you are so right. The difference between your modded camera and Google Camera is astounding.
I really wonder why these changes can't be ported at the smali level to an open source camera like CM11S....because this is not leveraging the stock driver framework.
This is amazing
^ NOT my work. Search for apps subforum in G2 threads.
Works magnificent. Now aosp roms for lg g2 Will be Nice
Still getting slow shutter speeds. Are there any fixes for that yet?

I am really hoping for the Camera2 API support in the new Lollipop roms for the G2. That should make it easier for any future ports to AOSP based roms.
Tried most of play store camera's and modded one's... I use my camera a lot so quality matters to me.Best overall and close to stock quality:A Better Camera.

I'm afraid not - the stock camera zip in this thread blows A Better Camera out of the water.
See the comparison below - take a guess, which one is which!

1. flash this
2. set it up..you can't set it up later..set up flash, focus, size etc..
3- install this
that's it
it you want to set it up later you have to "downgrade" it from app settings, then reinstall the 3.
