[Q] 4.4.4 OTA and Root that doesn't trip Knox? - Verizon Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm still on 4.4.2 on my Galaxy S5. I rooted using Towel Root and want to update to 4.4.4 to take advantage of the VoLTE calling. However it seems the current method of flashing a new (even if official Samsung) Kernel with Odin may trip Knox making my warranty (totally) void. (I'm aware in a rooted/modified state it's void. Restored to total stock, unrooted. Warranty should be restored). So my question, is there a current method that doesn't trip Knox and allow me to root 4.4.4?
Thanks

[Q] knox normal behaviour?

I was in stock I9500UBUBMG1, then I used auto-root and after that I flashed cwm recovery via odin. Everything worked fine in despite of Custom Binary and custom system status in dowload mode. So tried miui rom, but after 2 months I decided to come back to stock I9500UBUBMG1.
curiously, all status are Official again.
Is that normal? since I just use stock 4.2.2 (old bootloader) or custom roms I can always return to official?
If I update via OTA will still official and show knox 0x0? (not that I would update).
If I install a 4.3 or 4.4 based rom I can return to MG1 with offical? or just if isn't TW based?
Thanks
I too have a question relevant to Knox behaviour: I am on Stock 4.2.2 MG1 firmware. I would like to Root and use Custom firmware. Any possible way not to trip Knox Counter? Anyway to save or backup my current modem / firmware, so that I can flash back to it if Knox is tripped?

if you update your phone to a rom with knox bootloader, then you can't root and install custom recovery without tripping knox flag.. otherwise, on 4.2.2 you can root and return to stock rom(only 4.2.2) to get fully official status.. consider flashing latest roms modified to support old bootloaders.. so you can keep away all knox things... press thanks if it helps..

As we are in the old bootloader, we don't need to complain about knox, since we can flash stock MG1 back. You just need to pay attention because some custom firmware are imcompatible with old bootlader (or modem, idk) and if i'm not wrong, some custom roms can update your bootloader. There are some methods that will not turn your status to custom, but I think that auto-root and flash custom recovery is the best way to install a custom rom.
Thanks so much for that info!
I've Rooted using Ryebread76's method:
If you plan to flash custom firmware, as in a ROM, your going to trip KNOX. If you just want root, I used saferoot. It's for the VZW version, but it works just fine for the i337M.
Any suggestions on Custom Recovery / Firmware that will not change 4.2.2 MG1 bootloader?

It will not trip knox, since it is not activated in MG1.

[Q]Knox Bootloader

Hi all,
is there any possibility to downgrade s4 firmware from 4.4.2 to 4.3 or 4.2.2? Even activating knox counter.
i need to reflash on my s4 gt-i9505 the non contain knox-bootloader firmware. Is there any possibility?
Thanks to all you
From what I understand, the bootloader part (as downgrade from 4.3/4.4 to 4.2) is impossible, but firmware, I think it can be done, but maybe need custom CWM flashable one
Once you have the Knox bootloader, there is no going back.
Flashing other non official ROMS and downgrading is possible, but it will all trigger the KNOX security flag. Make sure the ROMs you are flashing has the KNOX bootloader, or is compatible with the KNOX bootloader, or you will lose a lot of functions.
could u pls link it to me?

Flashing stock firmware shouldn't trip knox I changed my o2 firmware for the generic BTU firmware and it didn't trip knox, flashing custom roms, custom recovery etc will trip it.

No. Flashing stock firmware will not increment Knox.
The exception might be trying to downgrade a Kitkat bootloader e.g. trying to revert 4.4.2+ to a version before 4.3. An attempted downgrade may soft brick yoir phone and change Knox in the process. Also those with locked bootloaders i.e. ATT, Verizon, Sprint, USC should not attempt flashing firmware from foreign carriers.
Normally only a custom kernel or recovery will increment Knox. It is possible that a bad flash e.g. power interruption or (rarely) a random glitch could corrupt Knox as well.

[Q] Stock ROM

I have the i9505 running CM11 at the moment without any knox tripped since I flash everything via recovery and I'm planning to sell the phone so I want to revert back to stock ROM so the phone can receive OTA without tripping knox, is there a way?

[Q] Concerning about downgrading from Lollipop to KitKat?

Hello please help me.
I'm concerning about downgrading from stock G900FXXU1BNL9 (lollipop) to stock kitkat (original stock rom) via odin.
Does it trips knox or voids any warranty thing?
(I don't want anything irreversible about warranty, knox etc.)
And i heard that if i downgrade i can't upgrade again with odin.
Thanks.
Yes!
I think it will void warranty after rooting and unlocking bootloader!
PS: I'm Lollipop Hater too! :sly:

Simple downgrade using Odin w/o custom recovery and rooting WILL NOT trip warranty!
Did it many times.
I do not like Lollipop downgrade too! I hate white backgrounds.
I'll downgrade using original stock SM-G900F (DBT) firmware.
But in this thread (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2595889) they said:
"Not possible to downgrade to KNOX-disabled firmwares/bootloaders (An attempt sets 0x1) (even though some people state, downgrade is possible when omitting the bootloader file in a firmware package: see http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=2444671, not confirmed)
Even if you flash a KNOX-enabled firmware via odin (e.g. the latest fw) knox will be set to 0x1"
I'm so confused
Downgrading from LP to KK using ODIN and a stock ROM will NOT trip KNOX
End of story
@*Detection* Thanks for the confident answer
I'll downgrade with peace of mind now
