[Q] Gallery App stays empty - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S 4 Q&A, Help & Troubleshootin

I successfully rooted but the upgrade of the su binary (using superuser) failed and the stock recovery went into some kind of failsafe and wiped the phone.
I had recently made a backup using adb and restored that backup using adb.
I wasn't too happy with the result. It seemed to miss a bunch of my apps and settings that I had to manually bring back to the way I had it.
Additionally, I found that I had to re-uninstall/turn off the bloatware apps that I had done before the backup.
Other than those minor annoyances, everything else seemed to restore just fine except for the Gallery app.
Ever since the restore my gallery app shows no pictures or videos (not blank thumbnails, a lack of any albums at all). There are pictures on the internal memory and external SD card and it shows neither.
When I open the "Content to display" menu and hit "OK" it scans the memory for media for a while and when that completes gallery does display the albums of pictures that are stored in memory.
However, if i reboot the device or even leave the gallery app for a while and come back to it, all of the pictures and albums are missing again.
I have tried stopping the gallery app and clearing cache and data (as suggested in other threads).
I tried using a root enabled file explorer to delete the gallery data folders (both in /data/data/com.sec.android.gallery3d as well as in /sdcard/Android/data/com.sec.android.gallery3d) with the same result.
I have tried pulling all the images off the internal memory and putting them back (as suggested in another thread).
I have tried other gallery apps like F-Stop and it functions as you would expect.
All of this leads me to believe the problem is with Gallery app and not the storage of the images themselves.
A similar thread suggested that he solved it by formatting the storage. I'm willing to give that a try if it seems likely to work. But since it was a little bit of work to get everything correct again after the restore, I'd rather not if there is another way. (Plus, I'm not fully sure how to go about it).
Any advice? Thanks in advance.

[Q] Camera images from SD card dissappear from gallery

I just noticed that the images I take with my DZ camera disappear form the image gallery view on every reboot.
I have permanent root with visionary and am running Launcher pro and stock ROM.
This is what happens:
1. I shoot a picture
2. It shows in the gallery under 100MEDIA.
3. I turn off the phone (really off/batt remove)
4. I turn on the phone
5. I launch the gallery, and it rescans the SD card contents
6. *poof* : 100MEDIA folder listing is GONE.
I have no hidden folders.
When I browse the SD card with Astro, the images are still there in \DCIM\100MEDIA. I have put loads of pictures from my old phone on the SD card, and they are listed correctly every time.
What have I tried:
- I have installed SDRescan. No effect if I scan before, after boot, whatever. I even have the feeling the images dissapear from the view whenever I run SDRescan so it doesn't work for me.
- I have swapped the stock SD card for a formatted class 6 8GB from my Rhodium. Same behaviour.
- I have installed another Gallery (Nexus 3D) with same behaviour.
- I have tried disconnecting and remounting SD card through SD card settings, no luck either.
I am running out of options here.
Anyone please?
Anyone? I am getting desperate...
I dont think you'll see '100media' folder in your gallery eventhough you obviously can find it through sd card. Try find in 'camera shot' folder if it is there
Try do this: go to manage application, pick ur gallery/photo app, clear data/cache, then restart the app
send from my RcMagic v2.0

Thanks for your reply!
I already tried this, however no result.
BUT!!!!! Your post encouraged me to dig a little further.
I tried renaming 100MEDIA folder etc, playing in Astro. I then checked to show hidden files and folders.... and guess what? There was a .nomedia file in the DCIM root!!! Now I googled it and apparantly every folder that has such a file in there does not get scanned for media content as pictures, video's, music etc.
Deleted the .nomedia file and the pictures finally show up in the gallery!!
BTW, it does list as 100MEDIA folder in the gallery.
Topic can be closed closed, hope it helps someone else in the future.

[Q] Music, Ringtones, Pics on SD Card not showing up in Gallery, etc.

I have used the same SD card through several HTC phones (Evo 4g, Evo Shift, and Evo 3d) and all of my content is on it. I have had my S4 since opening weekend, and had it rooted about a month later. I have been using TriForce Rom 3.1 for about 6 weeks now.
For about 2 weeks, everything worked just fine. Then one day, I noticed that all of my pics and albums disappeared from Gallery. All of my music and playlists disappeared from the Music app. All of my downloaded ringtones disappeared from the list. When I use ES Explorer or Root Explorer all of the content is there inside the correct folders in /mnt/ExtSdCardHere is what all I have tried...
1. Unmount and re-mount SD Card
2. Fix permissions via TWRP
3. Move items from ExtSdcard to sdcard (this works for all media, but i don't accept this as the only solution. There has to be a better way)
4. Scour ExtSdCard for .nomedia (it is nowhere to be found)
5. Download different apps. Rocket Player can find all of the music, but I have yet to find a Gallery app that will find them all. (once again, there has to be a better way)
6. Clear data and cache of the offending apps in Application manager.
7. Wipe Cache and Dalvik from recovery.
The other wierd thing is that in the native music app I have a single album named "Kernel" with a bunch of "songs" like 2x, 5x, 6, Air, Binaural, Binaural2, Blackface Deluxe
Any help here would be appreciated. I have no idea if this is a Rom issue or not. I'll try to get UnknownForce to look at this thread just in case.
Maybe go into settings, then far right tab, then... I forgot what it's called. In application manager, you can clear the cache of each program that isn't behaving and it might rebuild the cache. In recovery, you could wipe cache and dalvik so it would rebuild everything. As for another gallery program, I've always used quickpic. Could it be that the media files got corrupted?

Thanks for the suggestions. I tried them both, and no luck. I added them to the list above. As for corrupted files, wouldn't that mean that I couldn't view them at all? I can open them through Root Explorer as well as by putting the SD card into the computer. However, when I connect via USB the only folder that I see on the SD card is DCIM
Problem solved! (at least temporarily)
I did a clean install of the Rom and everything seems to be working fine. I guess that I messed with something on accident.
Yeah that's a good possibility. Fresh full installs are the best way to go.

Device Storage DCIM Folder Disappeared

Hello everyone,
I've searched endlessly on this topic with no luck. If there are any posts on XDA that relate to this issue, please do refer me to them.
I have a Samsung Galaxy S4 phone. A few days ago, I realize that the DCIM folder has disappeared from my gallery. I do not have a micro SD card installed, so the DCIM folder is on the device storage. I've tried using recovery software such as "Jihosoft Android Phone Recovery" and "Wondershare Dr.Fone for Android", but I get loads of connectivity issues. I've tried using them on another S4 where only Jihosoft's worked, yet there are loads of deleted photos that do not appear.
Anyway, I am not asking about how to use such software, I just want to know if there is any efficient and solid way of dealing with this issue. It really bugs me to have valuable photos disappearing in thin air. Please and thanks !
-Kevin
Is the folder present when browsing with a file explorer?
That is basically an essential folder. Even if you delete it, android will create it again. So it doesn't just disappear.
try and do as little as possible that will make the phone write to your internal memory aka downloads (apps should be ok as it's in a different partition). if you do you are possibly overwriting a photo making it impossible to recover. I tried an app called dumpster recycle a few years back, I was impressed at the time at what it could recover...
http://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.baloota.dumpster
Internal storage files can't be recovered due to something called trimming.
I don't know if this has changed with the recent android versions.
never thought about that, yes trim effectively formats deleted files...
I saw a guide on how to do it some time ago, so it is possible. But it seemed like you have to go through a lot of trouble for this.

Pics on SD Card Not Showing Up in Gallery

I have the Verizon variant and I'm experiencing an issue where only some of the images on my SD card are showing up in the gallery. I took the card straight from my V10. I have tried the following to no avail:
- Backed up files to PC
- Reformatted the card from the phone
- Replaced files
What's also weird is that if I take a pic with the camera it puts the image in the camera folder on the SD card with existing images but only the new one shows up.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

I had an issue like that when I went from a Note 3 to 4. I looked in the card and found saved thumbnail image files and temp files. Once I removed all of those (while the card was in the PC) and then put the card back in the phone, it worked fine.
check the card to see if there no ".foldername" or ".nomedia" file in those directory
Thanks I tried both suggestions and they didn't work. I also wanted to mention that when I go into the stock file manager and attempt to open one of the images I get the flowing message:
Scanning media files..... Try again when scanning is completed

I had a similar issue, this is how I fixed it
Use Root Explorer or ES File Manager (Root explorer is my preference because it lets you have two directories side by side)
Navigate to the SD card, locate the folder(s) with the pics. Copy(not cut) all the folders and then paste them into your internal memory (in Root explorer I went to my downloads folder, created a new folder and stuck everything in there).
Then once everything is copied, format your SD card again. Then move everything back.
Once I did that, Gallery was able to see all my files.
Delete or do not copy the Android, data, Lost.Dir folders ... could be a permission issue

Just make sure any app you have set to save data to the SD card is backed up somewhere else or you will lose said data

Thanks for the suggestion. This worked!

The only drawback to copying back and forth is that it changes the "modified" date on the files and then makes them appear as new photos

Yeah that was the only drawback to doing that. I already have everything backed up to Google photos so all I did was not turn the back up on those folders on again and any new photos I've been creating new events/folders for them.
I just had this same problem. V20 didn't see my Mp3s or my pictures.
I just finished setting up my 200 gb card that came with my v10 promo last year but I had been using it in my tablet.
I went to the file manager and deleted lost.dir and everything is showing now! That's the only one I deleted and it was empty anyway. (unless there was something hidden in there)
I just spent 2 days setting this up and clearing stuff from my v10. I did my best not to panic when I finally inserted the sd and nothing changed!
Glad I had seen this thread!

I have tried all of the solutions suggested. I have an LG v20. I have at 512GB SD card (phone supposedly supports up to 2GB) My file manager and most any photo gallery app will not see the pictures on the sd card. I have backed up, format and re copied. No change. I can see them in Google photos but I'm not even sure that it's looking on my phone rather than backed up photos in the cloud. This is frustrating.
Ok. I think I figured it out. My pic folder was a sub folder on my SD card. Beneath the pic folder were more sub folders to separate my photos. I moved the pic folder to the root of my SD card and the problem went away. I think there might be a limit to the number of sub folder depth for scanning. SD\MyDoc\PIC\(segregated folders) would not work. The only weird part is that it did find the videos in the segregated folders but no images. Strange. Regardless, everything shows up in attaching, file manager and gallery.
I just created a folder in the dcim folder called oldPics then moved all to that folder. Bam! Shows up in there own folder in gallery.
sd card issues..please help
having issues with sd card showing mp3 or pictures from my sd card. in the file explorer the files are there but in gallery or music player they are not. I have deleted the Android, data, Lost.Dir folders with no changes. Can anyone point me in the right direction with this?
thanks 949BFN I have tried your suggestions. still having the same issue. the files work fine from file explorer but not in their respective apps. I have downloaded about 10 apps between the gallery and sd card and none of them recognize the sd card. any other suggestions?
I had the same issue. Pictures on the SD Card (which came from a S7 Edge) were not recognised by the native Gallery app. (Quickpic did not have an issue displaying the pictures). I could however not get any app to recognise music (mp3's and playlists) on the same SD card.
After trying the suggestions in this thread, I realised that all one has to do, is to rename the folder to something else (I e.g. changed my "Music" folder to "Musicd". I forced closed all Music apps, reopened the apps and all the mp3's and playlists were immediately recognised. (Not sure if this step was actually necessary). I forced close the app again, changed the "Musicd" folder back to "Music" and all is well. All Music apps (including Google Play Music) no recognise the music and playlists on the SD Card)
I did the same with my "Pictures" folder and subsequently, the Gallery app picked up the folders. However, I now have an issue with the Gallery app crashing about 10 seconds after opening it I've tried all the usual stuff (clearing phone and the app cache); rebooting etc. with no luck so far.

Camera Issues after ADB backup to PC

I used this tool to backup the data on my device to my PC. Specifically the Camera directory on my SD Card.
Camera stopped working after that, even with developer mode completely off - adb shell and logcat on the camera tells me something like "Problem opening the camera id(0), possibly a problem with the camera." Don't know if that's an indicator of a hardware issue. My phone seems to think its camera is always on (can't turn on the flashlight, says it's in use by the camera).
Tried safe mode to rule out third party apps, uninstalled snapchat, cleared camera data & cache, cleared phone cache, etc. I checked the permissions on the DCIM & Camera directory on my SD card through adb shell which seemed to be correct, tried mv'ing & renaming the DCIM directory, unmounting the SD card, clearing data & cache on the gallery.. think I covered everything. I'm thinking a full reset will fix it, don't really want to deal with it, but I'm out of other ideas.
Anyone have any other bright ideas to fix this? My best guess is that I caused some sort of permissions issue somewhere with that script.
EDIT: Even after a factory reset, the camera still doesn't function.
