Hey guys, this is just a small guide. Note this does not actually change any functions and all it does is it changes the user interface to a dark Material Design UI.
This is only for users running Android L which have root. And have SuperSU. My apologies if this has been mentioned but I couldn't find any post regarding this.
This is also for people that just want a bit more material design flavour on their Android L. And if you think this is useless, please leave, no need for trolls. .
Procedure -
Open SuperSu, go to the Settings tab and scroll down to customisations. Then you will see an option for "Theme". Tap it and select "Device Default". The app will close, re-open it and you'll have Material Design.

Not Material
I thinks this isn't Material Design, this is pretty much Holo, you should read the guidelines. Nice redesign though. :good:
It definitely is Material mate.
Well mostly, because its Material.Dark

I don't think it is. It looks like Holo with a "material" color palette.
Notice how your tabs have vertical dividers? Material doesn't - Holo does.
This really isn't Material.
See: http://www.polymer-project.org/components/paper-tabs/demo.html
@dEris This is Material. If you can't tell the difference them im sorry for that but if you can tell the difference between holo and material then you haven't done enough research.
This is material.dark the default system theme, the ripped effect only occurs when you add the ripple effect code to the app. Read the new docs.
The tabs looks same, the tab indicators are thin like the ones shown in the link you provided. This indeed is material design my friend. The ripple effects also occur when you touch the list contents. The chrckboxs are animated, the pop up cards are also material like.
And as for the dividers, in the XML you can edit the colour of the dividers. Setting it to @null will make it transparent. Which is the case in the images in the link.
That's the popup, it definitely isn't a over coat.

You put Material Design elements on top of a Holo layout. Material is much MORE than that. That is Holo with a Material overlay basically.
@dEris The default theme style for Android L is Material.Dark well the preview at least.
So changing the theme style to device default in fact converts the style to Material Dark. I see no traces of Holo except the small icons as that's directed in the app itself.

My friend, a design it's more that just a colors and a module. In this case, the UI and the UX are Holo, not Material.
I like it!! Thanks for sharing!

Imho it's not about appreciation. The problem is that the meaning of Material Design gets too mixed up by many people. It's not just about colors and a lines thickness... It's way more then that!!!
@quand443 but the default theme style on Android L is not Holo... Its Material.Dark try it, you will see ripples upon selection. New popups, indicators, check boxes. Its no like its complete material.
Anyways guys, let's not keep this debate or w.e going. If you don't like this then just ignore it.

Gets too mixed? Since when did that start happening? Android L was just released and i haven't seen many topics on material design mixed up. Please enlighten me.
There are many posts in different threads, the social networks are full of them and I've read the phrase "app xy now in material design" way too often... Anyways, I din't want to moan around here, sorry.
C'mon guys. He is a "XDA Recognized Themer", he has to know what he is talking about ...
It doesn't really bother me, I found this "holo"... theme pretty cool so I shared it.

Ok, I'm gonna explain this the simplest way I can: You have lemons, right? And you make something and you say it's lemonade, but the thing is that what you made wasn't lemonade, it was a lemon pie.
It's the same here, just because you used it something from the SDK that has to do with material doesn't make it material.
And yes, we appreciate the effort, but let's not misuse the concept and confuse other users :highfive:

I wanted to make a little thread, to let everyone know what I have done to my XPlay, if anyone really cares, lol.
Obviously, first thing I did was unlock the bootloader and root it
Titanium Back-up Pro is my best friend, I removed LOADS of bloatware and all the crap I didn't need. Lovely.
SD Maid Pro helps to keep everything in check and my system and apps clean and tidy.
Now to the fun, that has got to me where I am today...
I made my own UOT theme, which can be found HERE.
I then started adding some of the Xperia S apps from THIS THREAD. Some worked, some didn't, so I have ended up with the new conversations app, contacts app, and dialer that look great, I also started using the Home.apk from that thread, but wasn't too keen on it, so found THIS THREAD where the Home.apk files work great, with all the new tweeks, so I have 3 home screens, 5x4 icons in the app tray and fading home screen indicators.
Only problem with the new Home.apk was because the Xperia S has a higher res than the XPlay, the text looked wrong, so just messing around I used Font Changer (from the market) and added the old skool Playstation font, called Zrnic.ttf and now it looks GREAT!!
Of course, I am using some other app's too, like Fancy Widgets for my clock and weather, the Type & Send widget, and Widgetsoid for every kind of switcher I could want. Went thru loads of calendar app's to find one I liked, and ended up using Simple Calendar with a nice 4x3 widget.
In addition to this, I have flashed the old CRT lock screen animation from HERE, Bravia Engine, and Reboot options in my theme from AdamTt (find the mod HERE)
Now to the OS, I'm on 2.3.4 with .62 firmware, running DooMKernel V11 and I am finding it great!!
Well, I think that's it to be honest, So this is where I leave u, lol.
If anyone whats any more info about anything in this thread please feel free to ask, before I got my XPlay I had NEVER used an Android phone, and now I wouldn't be without it. And I think I have learnt a lot and that is all down to the people of XDA forums, so I give a MASSIVE thank u to everyone who has answered my stupid n00b questions over the last few months. I wish I could list everyone who has helped me, but there are far too many to remember but the few I do are:
DooMLoRD - For everything he has done for me, and the whole XPlay community with his kernels.
cyrusalmighty - For all the help with the lock screen on my theme.
vr5411 - For the amazing work on the Xperia S Home.apk files.
AdamTt - For the Reboot options that work on many devices
AndroHero & Cat_On_Droid - For just always helping a n00b, with REALLY stupid questions, to find the answers.
And many thanx to anyone else who I have forgotten to add.

I've got some problems with Zrnic
Strange question marks. It happens too when I recieve long sms while my phone is in landscape mode. I see some words on the status bar but then there is big area with these "??" and nothing else. It's strange because i have no problems with standard font. How can I get rid of that problem?

Basically that is to do with the actual font, some characters may not be supported, so where as a "normal" font just puts a [] shape, zrnic puts a big ? lol, I have also found a symbol that looks like a massive copyright info panel, lol, I'm afraid there is nothing that can be done about it, seeing as it is just built into the font and not to do with Font Changer or anything I have done.
Hope this has helped.

Its always nice to read through someone's idea of modding their Play.
Like Your theme and they way You approach it. I need a lot more experience to start making my own roms or roms mods to get my Play look as i want.
Love this site and Play community, which is very helpful and helps newbies like me. Hope in the future i will help You too somehow. Thanks!
is there anyway I can change the font size it is so small and hard to read ,thanks
I am a very big fan of a "Holo Dark" theme to my android devices. There are a plethora of theming options for system and or user apps for aosp based roms. However the LGHome launcher is a pretty feature packed stock home launcher and utilizes all of the LG .apk's designed to be part of the stock UI. You lose this functionality with a 3rd party launcher with theming support or with a non-stock based custom Rom.
I have a collection of user apps to satisfy my desire for the "Holo Dark" look and feel, but would love to have stock LG system .apk's to match! These would include:
Messaging
Dialer and the small incoming call pop-up
Contacts
Email
Calender
Settings
***system UI theme inverted with white and Holo blue text/icons on a black or dark gradient background
I know this would be no small project, but I believe I cannot be the only user who prefers this type of look, and if the request isn't made.... well then there is nothing to gain.
Anybody can feel free to chime in here. Suggestions. Alternative .apk's or T-Mobile theme chooser options? Is it even possible or legal to modify the LG stock .apk's?
Most importantly, are there any active developers and/or themers able and willing to accomplish this?
Thanks for your consideration
Sent from my LG-D801 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Theming the things you mentioned would be nice. The bold typeface on white is a a torn on the eye, it refuses to obey the system font
I know it's possible, in Rayglobe ROM there's been some theming of the dialer and contacts app. In my opinion not for the better, though!
I'm using Rayglobe currently, not the themed version. Then flashed a theme made for version 3.x but it only themes the quicksettings colors and status bar dropdown background. Better looking than stock for sure. However, doesn't touch any .apk's

The ui for the lg gflex is based on black instead of white. Settings, dialer, etc..
Hopefully that will come or someone will cook something up based on it.

That looks pretty good aswell! I personally prefer the ultra flat design language that dominates the most recent mobile OSes recently, over the gradiented real-world-object-esque buttons. Your toggle switches are nice, but they look a bit messy when some are activated and some are not, in my opinion. The blue text color was also a bit too deep in my opinion. The buttons look good, and overall it's way nicer than stock

I agree with you. I guess I'm just used to the real world type UI that HTC started doing years ago.
I don't like the cartoonish flat UI's of today. Too common and too simplistic for my taste

But I won't mind this on my G2.

Why are they making ios-like styles, they could just create another style. Is it that difficult?
I'm not saying that the general style isnt cool but why always copying?

You do realise that flat style icons and pastel colours for icons and wallpapers existed before ios7? This 'copying' ios7 complaining is getting a bit stupid now. It's simply a current trend, and in a few years we will all have different style icons etc as stock on our phones, and then they will change, and so on.

I completely understand that, but as well finger recognition was also used before by the motorola atrix but when iphone featured it lg and samsung included it to the flagships, i know that apple isnt really innovating but it annoys me that android brands usually put same features than apple does without creating an own image or features(excuse my english)

It really bugs me how iOS is given credit for the 'flat' look when in fact all Apple did was copy Metro. Metro in WP7 as the first true flat UI and its still the best looking.

In theory though it is a debate that goes round and round and round with no answers. We like to accuse apple of copying our pull down notifications, and now windows phone is getting that too. Companies will use as much of other peoples ideas as they can, just in their own way and always will (then apple will sue them anyway . . . . I kid, I kid). Luckily we have the option of changing our icons at will on android, so if people don't like it they can change it easily.
Compared to the Current & New UI ....... with same widget & icons i will prefer the new UI :good:
New UI is not awesome or amazing but compared to G2 or G Pro this is much better (IMO)
I like the new icons ok but they could tone that bright blue down some...

Looks a lot like the iOS 7. Really, they have a solid OS and a solid phone, why are they making fools of themselves by copying Apple yet again ?
Why not make your phone look awesome before you start using it?

Presenting some pattern lock mods that use vehicles from Star Wars to make your phone look...well...awesome!
If you want to use these, you can do so in four separate ways:
If you know how to decompile files (if you don't, you really should), download the icons you want by selecting one of the '?_Pattern_Lock_Icons.zip' files and add them to the appropriate 'drawable-?dpi' folder in your 'framework-res.apk'.
Or, if you don't like decompiling files yourself and you're on Android 4.1 or above, try flashing one of the '?_PatternLock_Flashable_JB.zip' files. Because of the way that Android works, I can't guarantee that this will work on your particular setup. If it works for you, your existing 'framework-res.apk' will have these icons added to it, so any other mods you may have done won't be touched. And if you flash in CWM, you'll even get a flashable backup automatically made for you!
Or, if the above two options aren't working for you, you can make the changes with ZipThemer. Just install the ZipThemer app, which you can find on Google Play, download the '?_PatternLock_ZipThemer.zip' file you want and use it.
What if you're one of those amazing, clever, innovative and incredibly good-looking people who use 'Tickle My Android', you can add these icons to your current selection. Just download 'Star Wars Pattern Lock TMA Icons.zip', extract it in 'user_files\ICONS\PATTERNLOCK\' and run the tool as normal. TMA will automatically add the icons to the list you can choose from.
And this is what they look like. Be aware, these images might be a bit large but they need to be to show off the icons properly.
Jedi Star Fighter
Naboo Star Fighter
Slave 1
Tie Fighter
X-Wing
Y-Wing
Enjoy!

You can, yes. All you'd need to do is add the icons to an existing theme apk.

I'll work on one for you.
In the last few days, these icons have been featured on androidpit in a section about theming your phone with Star Wars!!
Check it out here: http://www.androidpit.fr/personnaliser-smartphone-android-star-wars
Wow that looks amazing, would it be possible the dots stay stock but the line you drag in a red or blue or green saber color?

Maybe...what version of Android are you using?

Very nice, any chance you can make this into an xposed module, that way you wont need all the separate zips.

Wow. Thanks!! :highfive:
That's very kind of you to offer. :good:
The trouble is, though, LP uses a different type of pattern lock. It's much more compact. I haven't tried but I would imagine these icons would be too bulky...

Possibly... Lollipop is a bit different to previous versions of Android in the way it uses image files, but I can have a look.
It won't be for a few days though. Work is a bit too busy right now.

Take your time and thanks :victory:
Waiting for an xposed release, since it will make things much simpler. If you need help, don't hesitate to ask. I would very much like to see included the TIE Interceptor or TIE Phantom, which are some of my favorite starfighter designs, if you have the time and patience. Otherwise, it is a great mod and kudos to you! My sister will also love it!

Well, the Interceptor is a very sexy craft but the Phantom? Really? Oh well...if that's what you like!
All kidding aside, I'll see what I can do.
Work is a bit crazy right now but, once I've got some free time, I'll look into doing a module for this. :good:

It has been a long time! Strange coincidence though...I finally saw Rogue One yesterday and you posted while I was watching a video about Star Wars fan theories on YouTube.. Maybe this is going to be a Star Wars week? lol
Anyway I'm afraid I haven't done anything with your request. The problem is that there are no decent images for the TIE Phantom anywhere. There's plenty of fanart but for this mod you really need an icon - the ship would be facing the right way and it'd be surrounded by a lot of transparent space. Icons are what I used for the other mods in this thread.
It's possibly because it's not a canon ship I guess. There doesn't seem to be any suitable files for the TIE Striker yet but that might take time. The TIE Defender seems to be a canon craft now so somebody might do something for that eventually.
The trouble is that I'm no artist - there's no way I have the skills to make the right sort of image myself. Maybe if somebody's reading this, is skilled with Photoshop and feels like a challenge...?
Unfortunately it wasn't long after I posted this that Sony changed things and stopped using image files for the pattern lock. Instead it's all rendered by smali now. So this mod sadly never went any further.
And my 2017 is pretty sucky at the moment but I'm sure it'll get better. After all I'm bound to win the lottery sooner or later!

maybe something with my workplace internet
Maybe higher resolution. All the ones it downloads are crappy.
Nice wallpaper..android L is coming [emoji2]
The thing is, many people still use 2G in India here. And when the screen turns off, the wallpaper would be half downloaded & already set. As a result, many people see grey backgrounds of what looks like a graphical glitch. I've found a workaround but it's not very battery friendly though. Just select stay always on for the screen timeout as the wallpapers are being downloaded & once you're done downloading the wallpapers, you can set your timeout as desired. Just make sure that the screen doesn't turn off while a wallpaper is being downloaded. I hope I helped & I'm looking forward for the dev to fix this. The wallpapers are really sweet!! Thanks!
Says my device is incompatible with the app. I have a OnePlus One
Edit: Saw that it was having problems with the One+, never mind.

Using Material Walls on the block screen
The Android app only lets you use the wallpapers on the start screen . Why they cannot be installed on the block screen?
Maybe some Muzei integration?
