I am using 9500 with kitkat unrooted and having some problems with random screen wake ups. It happens more often while charging and also not charging. Stay awake while charging option is disabled but still the same. How can I solve this cause it is pretty annoying.

Download WakeLock Detector from PlayStore and leave it for a while to gain data of what causes your wake ups. After a couple of hours you can check Screen Wakelock in the application and see what's going on.

I've noticed that after rooting my 10.1v, if I leave my unit unattended for long periods of time, it turns of itself completely!
It's frustrating because each time I try to turn it on after a few hours I have to wait for it to boot up which takes a few minutes.
I can confirm it's not turning off because the battery has run flat, because I have tried fully charging it, then leave it in my bag, come back later it's fully shutdown, when it comes back up the battery is still at 99%.
Anyone else experiencing this anomaly?

Which applications did you uninstall?
So, yesterday I noticed a sudden battery drain on my nexus 4. After checking battery it showed that AndroidOS takes over about 50% of the battery usage. It also showed that time awake was pretty much the same as the amount of time since I unplugged the phone, even though I kept my phone in sleep mode for the most of the day. After some research I downloaded better battery stats and it showed that from the moment I turn the screen off a process called suspend_backoff runs pretty much the entire time. Eventually I got it down to wifi. If I turn off wifi there are no processes running after the screen is turned off (or if there are they are 30 seconds tops), but the moment I turn wifi on suspend_backoff runs pretty much the entire time screen is off. I tried removing all of my apps, as well as doing factory reset but nothing helps. The moment I turn wifi ON this suspend_backoff consumes pretty much all the time during screen off period. Is anyone experiencing anything like this ? I have 4.2.2 on the phone and I havent' seen this extreme drain until just yesterday.
I experience the samething. Android OS would drain as much as the screen time.
I narrowed it down to the suspend_backoff. But the weird thing is that when i'm at home on my home wifi, suspend_backoff doesn't seem to drain anything at all. But when I'm at school, suspend_backoff kicks in.
Anyone help?

how did you narrow it down? Im having the same problem!
This is caused by a kernel wakelock. A bad mobile connection make battery drain worse... using WLAN nearly fixes this problem.
Thought this problem has got fixed in 4.2.2, at least battery life got improved and the wakelock reduced.
If it is appearing since yesterday, it is triggered by a app often waking the phone up using mobile data (that's why fixed with WLAN) and prevent the phone from getting into deep sleep as fast as it should.
hope i could help.
I use Greenify to hibernate every single user installed apps, then I release them one by one to see which one cause suspend backoff. But suspend backoff still occurs. So I think it's the kernel itself.

as i said before, an app needs data, so it starts callung the kernel wakelock... this one causes tje drain, not the app itself

Yeah, definitely not user apps. I did full reset on the phone to factory settings, no user apps. Even tried disabling Google Play and Google store after the reset. Still the same. The only thing that gets rid of it is disabling WiFi.

When did you start noticing this ? Has it been for a while or just recently ? I first noticed it yesterday (had the phone for a bit over a month now, didn't see any issues until just yesterday)

What is the difference between greenify and limit background apps in developers options?

Yeah, it's clear that it's the wakelock. What's not clear is why. Also it's not the msm_hsic_host that the forum link you sent refers to. I don't have a problem with msm_hsic, that one barely takes any time during the day (maybe 30 seconds during several hours of standby). The wakelock causing this particular issue is "suspend_backoff" wakelock which supposedly happens when there is a sequence of sleep/wake calls too close together so the system decides to keep it awake. I was unable to find what exactly is causing the issue, even after restoring to the factory settings I kept seeing the same problem.
Anyway, I was able to "resolve" it by installing JuiceGuard app and setting it so it disables wifi when the screen is off. wakelock is gone now and my battery usage is back to normal.
I only get the suspend backoff wake lock when I'm connected to the university Wifi. When I'm at home, everything is fine, no suspend backoff. So my guess is that the Wifi encryption at university is different and causing a succession of close "awake" and cause wake lock.
I did factory reset like 3 times and it still there.
I'll try disable Wifi on Monday and see how it goes.
Same here, when wifi disabled the wakelock doesn't occur.
I have tried almost all of the kernels and non of them seem to help.

Interesting... Maybe it is encryption. One thing with my Wifi is that it doesn't use password, but MAC list instead. It may indeed be an issue with different wifi encryption types.
OP do you have maps 6.14 on your phone? Mine kept switching on location reporting for a while and it woke my phone 344 times last night. I've been struggling with the same wake lock issues. I'm going to recharge (again) with maps disabled and see if that helps.

The clowns may have left you a lovely gift there without telling you or asking any kind of permission.
The latest Maps was giving me horrible battery drain, on WiFi. I'd sleep for six hours with a fully charged phone and wake up with 10% left. it even enabled itself when. I disabled it in settings. I converted it to a user app by moving it to /data/app and greenified it. Seemed to have solved all of my issues with the suspend back off wake lock.

For some weird reason, I was also having serious battery drain suddenly since yesterday.
Turned out it was maps, and disabling Google network locations hugely increased battery life

Hey guys, so I'm not sure what's going on but myself and several people on reddit are experiencing this issue:
http://www.reddit.com/r/nexus4/comments/1j7o85/n4_shuts_off_overnight_after_43_update/
Every morning since I've gotten 4.3 update, my nexus 4 shuts itself off throughout the night. It does not boot up until I force a shutdown (volume up and power) AND THEN try to power it on.
My nexus is completely stock, it has not been rooted or even bootloader unlocked. It seems to work fine regardless, but I like to keep my phone on in case of an emergency.
Can someone shed some light on this?

This sounds like the sleep of death issue. User tkolev has written the Safe Charge app to prevent this from happening when the Nexus 4 is charging. You can read his discussion of the issue at http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2226698. The app is available at https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.sash.sodeliminator.

Thanks for the info Bob. However, I don't charge my phone throughout the night, so I don't think it's that.
It's not the battery either because when I do power it up, it's usually at least 40%+ battery. I'm really at a loss as to what could be causing this.

Sleep of death happens when the Nexus 4 is in deep sleep mode and fails to respond to a key press and can occur whether or not the phone is charging at the time. If you are able to charge the phone overnight, I would install and enable Safe Charge to see if it keeps the problem from occurring at night.

That's terrible . It only started when I updated to 4.3, and unfortunately I can't charge overnight. I'm guessing the Safe Charge app drains battery? If so, I don't think that would work.
Is there seriously no other way to solve this issue than a wakelock work around? It seems pretty significant to simply ignore on Google's part.
i hate to say it, but you may have to do a factory reset to determine whether or not its the phone, or some app that you have installed that is not playing nice with the update.
I've found the issue, turns out Netflix's chromecast update screwed up with 4.3:
http://www.reddit.com/r/Android/comments/1jdenw/psa_if_you_have_netflix_read_this_before_updating/
Fix: Uninstall Netflix or stay on 4.2.2 until resolved. Thanks guys.
It keeps shutting off at 3:07 every night?

I am charging it using the provided USB cable and adapter, but the phone is almost too hot to touch when I wake up some mornings. It quits charging because of it, but it still remains very hot. It happens irregularly and I cannot pinpoint the problem.
I am running completely stock AT&T.
Can someone help me figure this out?
Edit: some more info: The cell radio has turned off with this issue at least twice. It turned back on after a restart. Airplane mode was not enabled, so I am not sure why this would happen. When charging at night, I run the Sleep As Android sleep tracker, and it's on my bed, but I run it every night and I am not sure why it would only give me problems occasionally (every ~10 days or so). It's possible I bump it in my sleep, but would that cause this issue? When I wake up it is fully plugged in and too hot to continue charging.

Is there any wakelocks keeping your device running? Look into it. Something could be keeping your device running in the background. Or perhaps something is turning on your device.
Worst case scenario is that you have a defective device in which I suggest you go see an att repair center or call att so they can exchange it due to defective issues. The replacement will be free.

Well put, reminds me of a scenario I had on my SG3. When I had first gotten my SG3 awhile back it would give me temperature warnings every so often (2-3) days. I found the problem to be that a couple of my applications were running background processes that were very cpu extensive and keeping my device awake. This caused the CPU to ran at nearly max frequency throughout the entire night, thus over heating my phone. I wiped every application I had and reinstalled and set background permissions to not allowed for a majority of them; this resolved the problem.
I haven't experienced this at all on my SG4, but I still disallow a lot of my apps to use background processes unless necessary. I did read online that some of the SG4 devices did have a defective heat sync though, however I'd try removing all your applications until you're down to bare minimal stock and reinstalling and keeping an eye on what could possibly be running your CPU up when your phones locked.
- Br4nd3n
I'm guessing that it has a spike in temperature, it turns off the charging, but it still is plugged in so the temperature keeps going up. Hottest I saw on it was around 65 deg. Celsius.
I attached a few graphs of this happening on different occasions (one portrait is the same day as the landscape). The fast drop-off is where I unplug it and let it cool and reinsert the charging cable, and it surprisingly does not get hot again. No restart is necessary, so I doubt there is much to do with the phone's CPU but I could be wrong.
So I have been having some major issues with battery drain and not sure why. When I was stock I would see this as well on 14a and now on 15a. I am stock rooted and removed RCTD with the app.
Wakelock App shows usage from RILJ? Not sure why. It seems like turning Bluetooth off occasionally stops the drain and heat so fast but it starts back again after the fact.
I have factory reset a few times to rid this issue that keeps randomly popping up. The only other thing I am guessing it may be is Samsung Health possibly causing this but the wake lock doesn't show that.
