So ive had my Nexus 4 for about 2 weeks now and i love this phone! i recently went to Dallas with my Mom and Sister over the weekend. Upon getting to the hotel, my Nexus decides to slip out of my hand onto the concrete. When i picked it up, it had a crack on the top right corner of its face. No big deal, right? Wrong! The top half of the screen is completely unresponsive. Good thing i brought my Galaxy Nexus to hold me off through the trip. Once i settled in at the hotel, I whipped out my laptop and bought a replacement screen. I ordered from this site... http://www.etradesupply.com/oem-lg-...-assembly-with-front-housing-and-battery.html

Judging from ifixit, it's going to be pretty hard to replace the screen. Would you mind keeping us updated on your progress here? I'm curious to see how hard it's going to be.
The glass is fused to both the display and the display frame. So don't crack the glass unless you're good with a heat gun, or you're fond of replacing the glass, display, and frame together ($$$).

Yeah, I think it might be a bit of a challenge. Please tell us how it goes though.
i think he ordered the whole glass/screen/digitizer fused together thing, which shouldnt be as hard to replace ( i hope). Anyways, please do keep us updated.
Yeah, i ordered the entire front housing, (battery, display, digitizer, and frame) for a total of $186.72... I already have my Nexus 4 disassembled. I'm just waiting for the screen which should get here Wednesday. And yes, I will update this post as i replace the screen.

I don't think its worth buying the set for $180 and then risking doing it yourself, I sent mine to lg and they're repairing it for $140 total.. Although the price may vary based on the damage..

you can get just the lcd and digitizer for 160 too, might be worth it if you dont have to ship it to LG or if it's an easy diy. There's even a b-stock lcd and digitizer for 140, the lightbleed special?
When you sent the phone to LG was it overseas or in the US? Also whats the website? thanks

i recently cracked my front display, but it still works fine. i'm looking into replacement options and i don't believe the suggested link you posted is a good choice, because the front panel + digitizer + lcd are all fuzed together and i don't have a heat gun...
http://www.etradesupply.com/oem-lg-...nd-digitizer-assembly-with-front-housing.html
this option is probably best at 120... but then i just read this on ifixit:
"The battery is stuck to the frame with a lot of adhesive, so removing it without puncturing the battery can be difficult."
so... looks like the 160 pre shipping/taxes is the best choice

just as an fyi - lg is saying their repair cost is from 40-150 dollars approx... i might just go this route since it doesn't void warranty and i won't screw anything up myself

Thanks buddy,
The same happened to me. But unfortunately i'm located in India.. Is it possible to purchase this Display assembly from India..
I'm really worried..
Hi,
I'm sorry to dig out the old thread, but i'm trying to fix my N4 of similar problem but i have a question:
Is there a way to separate the LCD from the digitizer? This way i can keep the LCD and get only the digitizer to save cost as my LCD is still working perfectly. In ebay, an OEM Digitizer+LCD assembly cost USD100+ (http://www.ebay.com/itm/LCD-Touch-D...e_Replacement_Parts_Tools&hash=item3cd597ce9d) but the standalone digitizer only cost about half of it (http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-TOUCH-S...er_Cell_Phone_Accessories&hash=item43bf9536ff).
All the instruction that i can find so far on the internet involve replacing the entire assembly.
Battery bending under removal
I'm also sorry to have to reply to an old thread, but I am in urgent need of an answer.
I recently cracked my phone's screen. I ordered a screen+frame repair kit, and got repairing. However, when removing the battery, When prying it from the phone, I realized that the battery was soft, and my tool I was using to pry it off was actually bending it. The battery seems to be curved overall, and slightly pushed on some edges. Also, a weird "sweet" smell came from the phone. Perhaps the smell is the adhesive that sticks the battery to the phone; I do not know.
Will it be safe to use the same battery again? Or should I go ahead and purchase a new one?
Wouldn't a hair dryer work as an alternative heat gun

I wouldn't recommend doing so as a LCD+digitizer assembly cists around $60USD I did not think its worth seperating them but you can use a hairdryer to soften the adhesive

How many times did your GS4 fall to the ground?
Mine just once down the side of my car's seat
Sent from my GT-I9500 using xda premium
3 times at aproximately 1 feet height, but inside a leather pouch with also a otterbox commuter, so no worries. :fingers-crossed:
In your opinion is it a fragile phone or a solid one? I mean would it easily bream with a tpu case surrounding it?

Nothing is solid when falling on concrete or landing on a corner from a certain height.
True story
Sent from my GT-I9500 using xda premium
3 times.. about 1.5 Meters each.. Nothing happened, just small scratches on the back.
All modern phones with big screen are fragile to me, even in an otterbox, but they are the best for me, so i get the commuter.
My old S3 was only dropped once outside the leather pouch with an commuter, at about 2 feet and nothing happened, but even with the best case, phones with big screen can break.
quite a few times actually. I think about 4 times. One time from 2 meters and it's still kind of working, I am having random shut offs but this came much after the fall so I don't think its related. Besides I had a snap on cover on. Not that it protects against shock damage but it keeps the frame intact.
Never dropped and never will!
hopefully
Had my s4 between my legs on car seat forgot it was there and when I got out phone fell to floor with just a s-view case on it all happened in slow motion but it survived with a few scratches on the side bezel and you have to look for the scratches to see them but I know they are there, I wouldn't mind but its the first time I've left the house without my pouch(gutted) but you can get a new rear housing for £15 if I need or if it bugs me enough...lesson? dont leave home even if its for 5mins without protection.??

Not that many actually but almost fell a lot thank god for reflexes
S4 Info
None, and if it drops i have the ugly otterbox defender case on it
So if it drops it stays good i hope lol
1 time.
Nearly a month ago, I dropped my phone from ~2 feet when I was picking up my kid daughter. My phone was in my shirt top pocket and I did not had any case or cover on it, although I had a screen protector.
Phone fell off on screen flat on ground (not on corners), and there was a loud sound when it hit the floor. I was completely sure, the screen is gone because I was following this topic on xda about S4 screen and how easily it was broken for some guys.
But to my surprise, nothing happened. No crack or scratches on screen or on phone. Although the fall made some holes in screen protector. Apart from that it was OK.
So the phone is pretty tough but there are some cases where screen was broken easily and that could be caused by faulty units.
So my advice is always buy one time screen replacement service along with phone. It's nearly $10 here, or get a insurance (at least for first year) which typically will cost same but cover lot more then just screen damage.

Hi guys my S4 was dropped and when I tried replacing the glass I found out the glass under that one is also broken, the touch worked perfectly everywhere on the screen but now I need the glass between the outer one and the digitizer. When I took it out it kind of looks tinted, sorry but that's the best description I can give. Anyone know where I can get a new one? (Im asking about the glass between the top outer one and the digitizer)
Normally you need to replace the whole digitizer and outer glass. Its one part and costs a lot to replace. I learned the hard way fixed the screen on my note twice and now I bought an s4 and never take it out of my otter defender case.

So I basically broke the digitizer along with the already broken screen and have to spend $250 for a whole new digitizer?
EDIT: I think you might be right because when I turn it on the screen doesn't work, theres a faint line of light in the left corner and the notification light (blue when turning the phone on) and the menu and back buttons work.
I cant stress how good my otter defender case is. It saved my phone so many times. They r a bit bulky and ugly but it beats fixing it too much$$$. Especially the s4 it is a weak phone.

Greetings,
My S4 screen cracked a few weeks ago. I'm pretty handy at fixing just about anything, but this time I've failed. I was going to replace the screen tonight, however unlike the many videos, when I heated up my phone and started to lift up to remove the adhesive, the cracked screen shattered like safety/tinted glass. The glass was finally off, however I suppose I truly didn't heat it enough, as there was a lot of adhesive residue behind. I was slowly cleaning it up, and suppose I pressed too hard on the digitizer, that the bottom left corner has display issues now, with a very faint line running left to right around the problem area.
So, here I sit with a new glass, optically clear adhesive, uv lamp, and a broken S4 Just picked it up about 2 months ago, but lesson learned (buy a heat gun and a temp gun if i ever need to do this again).
I'm ready to move on with life and get a new phone. Since I'm mere months in to my contract, I'll be shopping for a new phone on my own online. Might get another S4, might get a Note 3.
I'll take any constructive advice folks have to offer. Is the phone worth anything to anyone as it sits? I see a bunch of broken phones on ebay selling for insane prices (150+) with broken digitizers. I suppose my phone, given it's only the digitizer (and now missing glass) that's broken and the actual electronics are working might be useful as a parts phone to fix someones water/short circuited phone? If I were to post the phone and all accessories on ebay, how would the sale work as far as the phone being linked to me or my tmobile account? I'd keep the SIM of course, and the IMEI is good since it's actually my phone, is the proper thing to do to simply sell it, let someone else stick in their SIM and move on with life, or are there risks I need to be concerned with when handing my phone off to someone else, might they cause me some annoyances some how if i dont safeguard myself?
Thoughts? Or, even thoughts about what to get next?
After looking at prices for new S4s or a Note 3, maybe the best bet is to replace the digitizer, it looks like a new digitizer and glass is $200. that might be the way to go
I would agree, if you are able to replace both parts it will work out much cheaper. Looking at it on the brighter side, once the digitizer is broken replacing it and the screen is much much easier.

Definitely just replace the whole screen. Also look if any of the official samsung repair shops near you have any discounts; I got my S3 screen replaced for around 80€ (been more careful with my S4).
Thanks folks. I have a new digitizer setup on the way ($200 shipped on ebay), will be black (front) on white (back) once installed! I feared for the worst at the point of breakage, now looking back a $200 repair doesn't seem that bad! Appreciate the responses!
U could try a store like the one I use it's in the UK but maybe of some help ?

Bought a new digitizer on ebay for $200 thursday morning and had it installed saturday. very simple process (thanks to some youtube videos showing how it's done)
well that s some good news congrats
Has anybody ever replaced the digitizer in a phone? how hard is it? how high is the risk of it not working? So i sent my note 3 in, screen doesnt work at all with a cracked digitizer (screen doesnt work at all) so I sent my phone in rooted and safestrapped (dont know what slot it was/which rom) and they said they will note fix it, so I asked them if they would fix it if i unrooted and sent it back in if they would fix it. they said yes, and now they are claiming the phone has water damage which i am 99999999% sure it doesnt. Now i find myself looking for an s3 or something since a note 3 digitizer replacement is 260$
If its just the digitizer there is no way its 260 a digitizer is only about 20 at most you are looking at the digitizer and lcd now the skill it takes in not that hard as long as you have the correct materials such as a uv light like the ones theybuse tondry nails as well as the liquid adhesive solution that goes between the lcd and the digitizer as long as you can follow simple instructions and have a very clean place to do its its very simple I do that kind of thing at my business

thanks for the reply, i am looking at the piece with the digitizer and lcd together that you just pry the old one out and glue the new one in, is a uv light completely necessary? what is it for?
If your replacing just the digitizer the uv light is to dry the adhesive properly but it your buying the whole assembly you dont need anything but the tools and maby some double sided tape to replace the glue you will be pulling off the phone but my best sugestion is if you have total equipment protection use assurion to get a new phone for 99 instead of fixing ur broken one then sell it on ebay to pay for the replacement you got

I tried replacing the digitizer on the Galaxy Note 2
i tried but failed its extreamly hard. if it was me i would just return the phone if you have insurance. if you dont have insurance i would suggest taking it to a professional.

your gonna need a heat source also so you can melt the glue that holds the glass on i used a hair dryer but you might want to have someone help you as you will need a 2nd person apply the heat "warm not very hot" that way you can pry on the glass to lossen from glue. And a very very steady hand. In the process you cant make any mistakes if its your first time doing this i would say you have a greater chance of failer. Just speaking from my past expierence. Also it would probably help you to watch a youtube video on the entire process.

I never had any trouble but I have also done this many many times there are plently of vids on youtube if you want to watch sonebody to do it but I would sugest against a hair dryer or a heat gun the uv lamp I mentioned is nuch much safer it might take a lil longer but the heat produced will not damage the divice like the hair dryer or heat gun can
