Hey guys,
Just got my Epic yesterday.. coming from the G1 with lots of experience loading and tweaking ROMs and dealing with same/similar battery issues.
After unpacking the Epic I used it and let it drain down to zero before recharging it; after a full recharge, I loaded up the 7 screens with widgets and ran a live wallpaper (fish). I didn't really use the phone much at all and the phone went from 100% battery down to zero in the span of only four hours!!! Geeze, you've got to be kidding me - four hours battery life?? WTF????!!
Back to the drawing board: I rooted it and ran SetCPU with some power saving profiles. Removed the live wallpaper and went to stock wallpaper. Set display power off at 30 seconds. Note that 4G remains off since there's no 4G in my area..
Couple of questions:
1. Is there any way to toggle 2G/3G like there was on my old G1? I know that was a power saver.
2. I didn't stop to read all the documentation yet (typical male, I know) but is there any way to wake this thing up from sleep mode besides pressing the power button? I can see that power button breaking for as much use as it's getting from me constantly having to wake this thing up!
3. My brightness setting is set to auto - since the display is usually the biggest drain on these things, is there a recommended manual brightness setting (percentage) that seems to work well for you and saves on battery power?
I'm waiting for the Seideo Extended Battery (just like many of you) and am wondering if I should keep the Epic since I'm on the Sprint 30-day Easy Return program.
Appreciate hearing from everyone!
Chris R.
I don't have 4G where I am. But, I have a all black wallpaper(uses less power) and unrooted. I easily get about 12-18hr out of my phone wit normal use(text, talk, and surfing the net with skyfire). Only thing that really kills my battery are games(Robo Defense can take over 30min to play one game).
Thanks for the reply - situation NOT improving
Thanks for the reply.. unfortunately, the situation is not improving...
I tried setting a Sleep Profile using SetCPU that would under-clock the CPU (using the stock kernel) once the screen dimmed and the phone went into Sleep Mode. Unfortunately, as mentioned in another thread here, the result was that the phone froze and required a battery-pull to reset.
I'm really starting to lose my enthusiasm for this device; as beautiful a display and as responsive a CPU/GPU, all of that doesn't mean much if you don't have good power management built into the firmware. At 6PM this evening I pulled it off the charger at 67% charged, it's now 8:35 PM, only 2.5 hours later and I'm down to 22%. I'm in a decent coverage area and get 2-4 bars of 3G strength so I don't think it's an issue of the radio being the culprit; in-fact if you check the battery stats it reports that that lovely Display is accountable for 78% of the battery usage! So I guess we're paying a hefty price for these 4-inch AMOLED displays!
I read somewhere else that the most recent update (DI07) has caused the battery performance to decrease; since my unit is brand-new it immediately went and installed DI07 shortly after the first boot-up so I have nothing to compare it to.. can anyone comment on that?
Thanks!
Chris R.
I'm sure custom ROMs will put performance / battery life on the top of the list but until then, I use JuiceDefender beta and have seen pretty good results with it. It shuts off data whenever the screen is off and since my screen is off a good amount (only use my phone if I need to check email, call, and / or text, which is rare when I'm at work). Other than that, yes, use black wallpaper, lower brightness to the min. in the OS and browser, and don't leave apps that constantly use 3G open (things like ebuddy, pandora, etc.). 3G really destroys battery life so minimal use of 3G data would maximize battery life. Maybe the devs can figure out a way to get at least one full day of battery life on this phone. I'm hoping that is the case.
As to your post, yes, DI07 has resulted in poorer battery life, for whatever reason. I was definitely getting a few hours more with the older firmware. I would not lose hope yet. As disappointed as you are (and all of us are, I can assure you of that), the devs are really starting to push out nice ROMs already, and in a few weeks to a month, I bet we will see some solid battery life. Hell, even 2.2 should yield much better results. Patience
Thanks for the tip!

Thanks for the reply! Also thanks for the tip regarding JuiceDefender! What a great app! will give it some more time and report results back here.
Thanks again!

DI07 has hurt my battery life substantially. In fact, my battery drains very close to twice as fast now with the update. I don't understand what they did. My phone certainly doesn't seem any faster, my display is dimmer, and battery life sucks. I'm going to have to go back to DG27 so I can use my phone all day. With DI07 it always dies on me by mid afternoon. With DG27 it was still running by 11pm at night without even a battery low warning.
juice defender ftw
also, use advanced task killer with low security settings to kill all the background processes. Set the autokill to when the screen turns off. This keeps everything pretty well managed and helps with battery as well
JUICE DEFENDER BATTERY!!! Saved my phone from flying out of my car window at 10 in the morning........
here is a link to a thread I started.
Sharing my juice defender settings. I also use ultimate juice.
http://forum.ppcgeeks.com/sprint-epic-4g/133933-sharing-my-juice-defender-settings.html
I can get a day and a half (or slightly longer) out of a single charge.
YMMV.
Hope this helps
Advanced task killer + Juice Defender. You could also get some custom roms and Kernals that would help boost it.
But that's your best hope. Keep off 4g, wifi, bluetooth, etc.

Look here- try stopping the DRM service and see if that helps your battery life with D107

Ah, the evils of DRM can strike in unexpected ways...
I wasn't really having a battery problem but I just turned DRM off, so we'll see if battery life improves anyway.
I had a whole long post here that got wiped with the xda disk array failure, so I'll just sum that up here too:
1) Use wi-fi if possible - it REALLY helps
2) 4G does not seem to use the battery any more than 3G, although hunting for 4G does and 4G coverage is not as extensive as 3G even in 4G areas. So it's still best to leave it off if you're moving around.
3) Dim your screen and use a dark, static background. AMOLED screens don't work like LCD's; they use more power the more pixels are lit and the brighter they are.
4) GPS also kills your battery - leave that off unless you need it too.
I think that's it. I get about 18 hours on DI07 (even before trying the DRM thing; maybe I can get to a full day!).
One thing I'm noticing after checking DRM - I've got Google Maps' LocationService popping up about every 10 seconds, and I can't seem to shut it off permanently. (I went into Lattitude and turned that off, not sure what else to do.) That can't be helping... anyone know how to get rid of that?
I'm using juice defender and a constant email junkie, but lite use on other aspects of the phone. It goes off charger at 5:30 am and I'm about 67% at around 3p. It then goes in the car charger on the way home. This has much better battery life than the Pre or the Hero as with both I had to turn off email to get it to last throughout the day.
I don't expect these phones to last days, but I expect any phone that I get to last the business day. I've always been one to charge overnight.
Wifi drains battery more from what I've read.

I've heard the opposite that wifi (as long as it's connected) uses up less battery than 3g/4g. Any of them will suck the battery dry if they're searching, so make sure you have a connection to one of them.
Hi everyone, new to the forum. Just started checking it out when the Epic was released and this is my first post. Anyways, here's my question. My phone's been off the charger for 7 hours and 17 minutes and it is now down to 15%.
Display 79%
Cell standby 7%
Android System 4%
Phone idle 2%
Swype 2%
I've gone into the display settings and I thought I had set everything up optimally. The brightness is always very low. The screen timeout is 15 seconds and the keyboard matches that. I don't know what else I can do to cripple the phone to get the battery to last longer.
I have had wifi on, 4g off, bluetooth off, gps off. Really all I have done this afternoon while watching NFL games is check my yahoo fantasy score, play 2 games of WordFeud, and check twitter and facebook. I purchased Juice Defender a week ago and it has been running all day.
Any suggestions for how I can reduce the drain from the display? My background is a black and white picture of a friend of mine, which I thought would help.
Don't get me wrong, I love this phone. But the battery life I've seen is just terrible. I'd love to buy the extended battery from Seidio whenever its available, at least that would make it last longer even if the settings aren't tweaked.
Do you have juice defender installed?
Yep. Its installed and running now.

There are only two reasons for your display to be using that much battery:
a) it's too bright, or
b) you're using it a lot.
If you're using the phone a lot, your battery's going to run out pretty quick and there's no way around that. If you're using it a "normal" amount, which to me means maybe an hour *total* per day of having the display on, then the other culprit is going to be your brightness. (Some would argue that's less than a normal amount, but think about it... you get a new phone, you're going to play with it for a week or two until you've seen all the cool stuff. But at some point you're going to start putting it away most of the time and just using it when someone calls you, you get a message/email or maybe to play a game or two while waiting for the train.)
Set your brightness *all* the way down, just as a test for a couple days. Make sure all the "power saving" features of the display are turned *off* (auto brightness, and whatever that "picture detection" feature's called, I can't remember). You just want the display as dim as possible all the time, just to see what happens. See what the battery usage says after a day or two of this.
My bet is that you'll see a drop, and then as you get into a more normal usage pattern it'll drop further still. You can raise the brightness a couple ticks then as you learn how to stretch your battery out.
Personally, my display is rarely over 15% or so of my usage. Today it's 29%, but it's a Sunday and I don't have anything better to do but play around on my phone.
btw, it's still the first day I've tried this but that DRM thing might be working. It's almost 9PM and I'm still on like 80% battery, and like I said I have been using the phone off and on throughout the day.
That has helped tremendously. I installed it pretty much when I got the phone and I'm able to last the whole work day with 67% left. (10 hour day)
Heys guys, this is my second week with my nexus 7, I'm loving it but I have "weird" battery drains while sleeping with wifi on.
I say "weird" with quotes because I believe this would be a normal behavior, but I have an iPad (I know, it's annoying comparing devices) and it lasts more than a month with a charge even with wifi on and receiving notifications.
That battery life is impressive, I know it has a giant battery and all. :silly:
I think nexus 7 regular-use life is amazing, I just find this idle drain "weird".
My main question is: what's the average nexus 7 battery drain with wifi on per hour while sleeping/idle? or a more real-world scenario: how much % do we lose overnight with wifi on?
Yes wifi while sleeping DO seem to drain a lot for me too, before i changed it to off in sleep state i had to charge at least once a day, sometimes 2, close to making the nexus 7 a very disappointing device, i also got used to ipad's long lasting battery
anyway i can live with wifi being off while the nexus is in standby and the battery life that way is amazing compared..
of course other things is worth turning off too, to safe battery life, like no live wallpaper, no location service and so on.

4.2 has definately had a negative impact on my batter, bar non !
I used to get 3 + days of normal useage(normal for me), but after 4.2 it dropped by a WHOLE DAY to only 2.
I have switched it to disable wifi when sleeping, like you... which helped gain about 22hours of battery life, taking it back to about 2 days 22 hours, but thats STILL worse than 4.1.1 with less things turned on?
Also, how can I stop Wake Locks I don't understand them but theres absolutely no need for my tablet to be doing things whilst I'm not using it?

I disagree...
if wifi is off, at least for me, when I turn it on it doesnt receive the old notifications...
if I leave wifi on while sleeping, when I turn n7 on all notifications are there... that's why I need/want to leave it on

Fair enough, but for me I would much rather the tablet do as I've told it and disable WiFi whilst not in use.
Instead it decides to do this, but then keeps causing wake-locks, so the deep sleep is never activated at therefor battery drains...
I've lost literally a day use time between each charge which is every 3 days
times that by 3, you have 3 extra days charging in 9 days, times that by the year and your up to 3 weeks extra charging a year, justify that?

great point of view, in this case maybe its not worth it, but that was the point of starting this topic.
As iPad drains almost zero battery while sleeping, I was hoping nexus/android could do the same, then it would make sense keeping wifi on while sleeping.
Since this seems impossible, maybe it's time to let it sleep peacefully
At least battery life in regular use is great for such a "tiny" tablet. Overall I'm very happy with it :good:
I apologize if this was asked before (I did a search of the forums but nothing really came up), but I'm wondering what others' experience with the battery life of the S4 is? This is my first smart phone and coming from a non-smartphone, I'm not sure if my expectations on battery life are unrealistic.
I got the S4 on 4/29 and brought it through one full charge cycle and several part cycles. Battery life is pretty important to me so I put an all black background (since its AMOLED), keep the brightness to below 10%, turn off all the fancy sensor things, turned on power saver mode, turn off wifi and data unless I really need to use it, turn off all sync so it only happens manually, etc. Yesterday, I charged it to 100% to see how long it would last and the stats I got were:
At 6% battery left, I had a total screen on-time of 2 hours and 58 mins and 1 d 2 hr on battery. Then, when I charged it to 100% and took out the charger, after about 5 minutes of it sleeping/screen off, the battery percentage dropped down to 97% with no data, no wifi, no active apps running.
With my pretty battery-friendly settings on my phone (or at least I think so), is this battery stat normal to others with this phone? Or do you think something might be wrong with the battery?
That sound horrible. There must be some rogue apps running/some wakelocks - try using better battery stats and find out.

For a smartphone, an 'all-day' battery is fine, and given that the S4 has so many sensors, large screen and a powerful processor, I am happy with the battery lasting for 12-16 hours. I don't turn off any sensors, why get an S4 to run it on power saver mode and turn everything off? It defeats the purpose, in my opinion. I am trying to use as many features as possible on my S4. Of course, there are a few I don't, but just for personal preference. What you are doing is (no offence) in my opinion like getting a BMW M3 and running it on 4 pistons to save fuel.
Anyway, your battery life will improve after about 10-15 charge cycles, I noticed that with my past phones as well. If you need your battery to last longer, I would suggest getting a spare battery and keep it charged at all times for any emergencies. These are some of the reasons I love Samsung, removable batteries and microSD card slot.
thanks for the replies guys. I'll try the betterbatterystats app out. i'll probably take it back to sprint and see if they'll replace the battery for me. the screen accounts for about 50% of the battery usage in the stats and other apps take up the rest. the battery curve is pretty linear in a downward slope too (except when i don't use it at night, it becomes much flatter, albeit still downward).
haha its funny you say that, because i agree completely. the m3 is my dream car and if i could ever afford one, i would probably baby the crap out of it the reason why i got the s4 (and i also compared it to the htc one as a possible candidate) is because of the removable battery, sd card, nd most importantly: camera. that 13 megapixel shooter + hdr is really great for good photos on the go. speaking of which, i use the camera alot. is the physical use of the camera and the screen use a big power hog?

I'm considering to buy the Moto 360 when it's out. But there are a few things worrying me. One of them is how big of an impact using an Android Wear Smartwatch on your Smartphones battery life.
At the moment my Oppo Find 5 lasts from 4am to 4am (being in moderate use all the time) and I need that much battery life. So, if a smartwatch consumes more than 10-20% of my phones batterylife in a 24h day, I definitely won't buy one.

All smart accessories does take up a percent of your phones battery life.
It is also dependent on how frequently you allow notifications to be synced on your phone or "pushed"
e.g. Weather updates. mail updates, social media updates, etc.
While the lowest battery saving settings will not take up to 5% battery, the highest more freq settings can and will leech more battery from your phone.
However with this said, I still find it advisable that smart phone users carry a portable charger, as its always better to have an emergency back up

What are you listening most people have zero issues tethering bluetooth?
For most it is 3% battery life, big deal. Use bluetooth headset, in car, and the watch.
What is 3% of the 16 hours or so my phone goes in between charges?
When I buy a smart phone I make sure if lasts on the battery and I do not mean just 7am to 10pm checking and odd email; I mean bluetooth on, GPS on,, data on, browse for maybe an hour, games an hour, watch a full movie, dozens of emails, stream video and audio.
I will never need to buy a portable charger, I do not own an iPhone..
The screen shot I seen shows specifically "Android Wear" using battery life, this is an app and has nothing to do with bluetooth.
I am not good at troubleshooting such things but when I check my battery life, Android Wear is not even in the list.
I use a Note 3 with 4.4.2 I kind of expect one of 3 things, a wake lock and I do not know why it happen. The phone the OP has is using something like antivirus or a third party battery saver app which most post say to avoid or maybe it is running an old version of Android.

I am sorry, I do not get what you mean "What are you listening most people have zero issues tethering bluetooth?"
Do not see anywhere in this thread or my post saying we have issues tethering bluetooth.
Anyways, I am referring to OP worries of 10-20% battery drain from Bluetooth with Push notifications to Android wear.
I own a few android phones as well as a few iOS phones.
Depending on how often you push notifications from your Android phone to the Android Wear, the battery % varies. You cannot see this on the screen anywhere.
Like I mentioned previously, the lowest settings it will not take up to 5% (which means it is lesser)
However if you set push notifications (depending on individual phones and roms) to every minute, it will definitely kill your battery faster.
For example, some phones or modded roms allows you to increase the updates to every minute or 5 minutes.
The following is a list of updates most people would have, but not limited to these
1. Location
2. Weather
3. Social Media
4. Emails
5. News updates
6. Stock and shares
7. etc
What happens is then your Phone will update every minute or 5 minute (using WiFi or Mobile internet) thus draining battery, and then pushed the alert to your android wear or such device.
Thus Android Wear in itself does not drain your battery life, but to be exact the time intervals you want to be sync/updated actually does decrease battery life.
I am not sure if I answered what OP is asking for.
Since I am very sure if using it normally, there is no way it will take up to 5% battery life.

Ah that I totally agree, no or not much impact from Android wear, only how you set your update / sync / push notification intervals on your phone
Cheerios!
Thank you guys, now I know this won't be a problem. I'm still not sure if I will buy one because I think Motorola made some wrong choices with the Moto 360.

I use a Note 3 with 4.4.2 I kind of expect one of 3 things, a wake lock and I do not know why it happen. The phone the OP has is using something like antivirus or a third party battery saver app which most post say to avoid or maybe it is running an old version of Android.

This is not true and I even find it a little offensive. Just because I don't post at XDA's very often, people assume I have little knowledge on Android.
My Smartphone is one of the cleanest Smartphones you'll ever find. I'm running CM11. The only 3rd-Party-App causing Wakelocks is Whatsapp and I don't have Google Search enabled. I'm not even using Xposed. Every evening I take a look at BBS and make sure there isn't a single unnecessary Wakelock. Believe me, Wakelocks aren't the reason for that.
The Find 5 just doesn't last very long when in use. On moderate brightness I only get 4-6 hours of browsing via Wifi.
To answer the original question "again" no the Wear Smartwatch does not effect my phones battery life.
Oppo what ever I never heard of, I buy smartphones that have great battery life, the Note 3 gets my 2 days on OEM firmware.
If you have have phone that before you turn bluetooth on it only lasts from 7am to say 10pm need a bit more juice drained to turn low power bluetooth on maybe more noticable.

At the moment my Oppo Find 5 lasts from 4am to 4am (being in moderate use all the time) and I need that much battery life. So, if a smartwatch consumes more than 10-20% of my phones batterylife in a 24h day, I definitely won't buy one.

Oppo N1 user here. I have a ~10% improvement in battery life, since I check my LG G Watch more than taking out my phone, so less screen backlight time means more power saved.
Without my smartwatch, I'd usually reach home with ~50% battery life left (from 7am to 6pm). Now, it's ~60%. My notifications are the usual, lots of Twitter, FB, G+, Instagram, instant messages and SMSes. From here, it's up to you to prioritise which notifications you want to glance and swipe away, voice reply or "Open on Phone".
Oh, and if you can, leave your "Vibrate" ticked for each app, but switch off haptic feedback and vibration on the main settings, so the watch will still vibrate but your phone will not. I'm running OmniROM, so I used the "Quiet Hours" to turn off the main vibrations.

That was something I was thinking about. But almost all my notifications come from WhatsApp and I can't imagine answering from the watch itself is practical, so I don't think this will happen to me.
I'm getting a ton of qcom_rx_wakelock and it has to be from the the watch.

then you'd better save your money, stick with your phone. Anyway, reviews are coming in about the sub-par battery life of the Moto360, because of it's "mislabelled" 300mAh battery, and power hungry CPU that was used on the Motorola Droid 2 (yes, it's a 4 year old CPU).
there are some known issues of smartwatches draining battery on your phone due to their FW updates
for example this thread in XDA
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2573283
There are some others if you search more (here or google), but basically its a FW or update issue with the watch improperly syncing non stop with the phone, hence causing the bluetooth to constantly and actively transfer 1s and 0s between SW and Phone, thus draining battery life.
Besides this scenario, there should not be any other issues that I have encountered.

I haven't specifically noticed that wakelock, but I do get BluetoothRemoteDevices wakelock since I got my Gear Live. My idle drain on the phone does seem a bit worse when paired to my watch compared to how it was before, but I haven't done extensive testing.
I would never believe that it has no effects on your phone

That's what I ment when I said Motorola made some wrong choices. Instead of including a Heartrate-Monitor they should have chosen a bigger battery. Plus, using a Snapdragon 400 and an OLED-Screen (for the always-on-option) would have increased battery life drastical, too.
I decided not to get a Smartwatch. Instead, I purchased a LG G3 I got for a low price a couple of days ago. Unfortunately, I didn't know the bootloader isn't unlockable yet and propably will never be, so I don't really know what to do now. :/

Battery drainage is one of the biggest problem with the increasing number of functions in the app. You can use battery doctor in your smartphone which help to increase your battery life while you are using Android wear on your smartphones.
No
My phone is not adversely affected by my wear smartwatch.
Hey guys.
So I noticed everyone here and anywhere else basically, complaining about the battery life on this phone after the MIUI 11 update so I used the debloater directly after getting the phone to have the best battery life possible.
Turned off all the suggested apps and services and I gotta say battery improved, but it wasn't what was promised by the phone's specs. I'm barely getting 4h SoT, without any heavy usage whatsoever, only social stuff.
The culprit for me as well has been the Android System, with over 40% drain every day. So I installed Accubatery to try and see what's happening with my battery, along with better battery stats.
What I found useful from the accubattery app is the permanent notification where it tells you, after a few seconds, how much mA will be drained in an hour of using the phone like the way you are using it at that moment. So I did a test. Had my phone on the home screen, doing nothing. After a few seconds the reading showed -180mA, which is awesome right? Then I locked my phone and left it at the always-on display for a minute or so. Unlocked it and the notification showed -980mA.
This is very VERY weird and I cannot find anything anywhere suggesting what anyone can do to combat this. I have more average battery drain when the screen is off than when the screen is on.
I have never reset my phone (and would like that to stay that way if possible) and the phone itself is a month old. It's really saddening to see other people are getting twice as much SoT.
Do you guys have any suggestions?

I was on Miui 11 for a few weeks and had ~8h SOT with AOD enabled all the time. Now I am on Pixel Experience and I have ~7.5h SOT without AOD so I am very satisfied with the battery life.
I advise you to wait for Miui 12, which will come very soon to the Mi 9T. Then everything will probably change again with the battery life...
