Hi,
Ive got a problem. Yesterday i did the update from Dude 1.1 to 1.2, first without wiping, but then the G1 reboot when i want to download an app.
So i wiped it and it works fine. INternal Memory is 355MB free.
Today i wanna delete the APP SMS/MMS because i use chompSMS, but the G1 says that it cant delete. ("Uninstall not successful" "SMS/MMS could not be uninstalled")
So what could i do?
Thanx for ya help
if im not wrong in saying this, the stock sms mms program needs to be on the phone. chomp doesnt get your messages
it gets them from the stock messaging app.
Not sure what you're trying to uninstall (haven't heard of an app called SMS/MMS). However, if you're trying to remove the application "Messaging", you can't. Just disable notifications in the Messaging program and use chomp as the default.
Its the same with this Amazon Mp3 app, i cant uninstall it, what do i wrong? Or how can i get this app off my phone( dude 1.2 full)
You can't uninstall those programs..

If you are using a G1 build, its in /system/app. Remount the system partition and delete it from that directory.
Yeah great, thanx for ya help.
But now I now i'll gonna be beaten for that question, but can you explain me what you mean with 'remount the system partition"?
I've looked it up with ASTRO Filemanager and its really in /system/app, but i cant delete it from there, if i want to it says again "error deleting file".
Just searched a bit around and found the remount command that i know from a2sd, so i think i have to go to Terminal at G1,
#su
#mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
#rm com.amazon.mp3 /system/app
Is this right? So then i'm gonna eating my shoes But i think it isnt so i ask you before i delete complete G1
Or is it enough to remount with that command above and then go with ASTRO FIlemanager to that directory and delete it?

Yes, you remount it that way (or with DroidSans) and rm the Amazon file. I would still recommend against deleting the messaging one though.
I tried it this way, but it says error "Read only file".
I think i just let it on the phone and try to ignore that app.

use this code to remove amazon
Code:
su
mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
rm -r /system/app/com.amazon.mp3
that will remove amazon but removing messaging will make your system EXTREMELY unstable and most likely unusable
The problem was that i don't add the Fileending ".apk"
Thanx for ya help, tubaking182. It worked with your Command with adding .apk
Got the next problem, now i want to delete the Messenger App 'IM' but even if i do the same with 'amazon mp3' it says rm: cannot remove '/system/app/com.android.im.apk': No such file or directory
So what i am doing wrong, i tried it with "rm -r /system/app/com.android.im.apk"
"rm -r /system/app/com.android.im"
And many more but i get ever the same output -> No such file...
That means theres no such file...doesn't exist.
IT might be named IM.apk
Mh you're right!
I dont know how it tells me 'com.android.im' in ASTRO Filebrowser, and why i could delete it with IM.apk
With AmazonMP3 i have also to write: com.amazon.mp3.apk
Doesn't matter, THANK YOU for the fast help
amazon
spend a couple bucks and get root explorer, it is well worth it, and then its very easy to delete anything after that.
Wait wait let me get this right ... with root explorer i could avoid the whole going to terminal and typing all that code and just simply delete the apk from root explorer program and thats it >?
Can it really be that easy ... tell me thats the case
Also when you use the terminal code or the root explorer method ( if it can be done like that) when you go to applications in the phone menu to view list of apps you still see the amazon mp3 app in the system .. how do i remove that also

I'm testing right now..
Just started playing with my Aria a few days ago. Thanks to some cool posts here I was able to root and change my boot animation easily. I've also been able to change the sound that plays with the boot animation. There seemed to be some question as to how to do this so thought I'd post how I did it.
I didn't invent anything new. Just followed the "How to Add Audio to Your Boot Animation" down at the end of this post: androidforums.com/incredible-tips-tricks/93514-htc-incredible-boot-animation-guide.html
The bootanimation.zip file I was using did not have android as one of the directory names. I unzipped the file and changed the first directory name to android. Then used jEdit to edit the desc.txt file to change the directory name in it. Pushed the new bootanimation.zip to /data/local and, voila, I now have sound.
Both my bootanimation.zip and android_audio.mp3 are in the /data/local directory.
One other quick thing I noticed. A lot of the posts I've seen use this syntax to remount the /system file system: "mount -o remount,rw -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock4 /system". On the HTC the device for /system seems to be /dev/block/mtdblock3. Using mtdblock4 in the command seems to work, but I wonder if you could get inconsistent results.
Hope this helps someone.
David
thank you
works but also I had to have both files in sdcard/media/ aswell
yeah, i know, major bump, but did all this, and instructions in linked thread by OP, still no sound. followed ALL directions, MANY times, no go. tried adb pushing, using root explorer, and any other thing you can think of, still no sound.
Sent from my HTC Aria running CM 6.0.2.1

Which ROM are you guys running because this is not working for me at all. I've been trying to get audio to work and it just doesn't. I'm running CM6.0.2.1.
Here is what I've done so far.
I made the changes to the desc.txt file by renaming "p 1 0 part0" to "p 1 0 android". I then also renamed the part0 folder to android. Created a zip file of all three (desc.txt, part0, part1) without compressing.
I then set the phone to debugging and pushed both the bootanimation.zip/android_audio.mp3 to /data/local and to /sdcard/media. I reboot and nothing. The bootanimation works but still no darn sound!
Has anyone else have any luck with getting custom boot sound ? I really think it has to do with which ROM you're running.
boot sound
i think david is on stock rom from att, which would useless to like a cm rom
I'm kinda new to android
I've started to delete useless apps through Titanium Backup(acer staff, games etc) , and exidently deleted smth connected with honeycomb stock keyboard.
Now every time when i want to use stock keyboard, pops up a messege "The application Android keyboard (process com.google.android.inputmethod.latin) has stopped unexpectedly. plz try again".
Ive tryied to reset factory data but it wont helped. Is thera any solution for this problem? if there no, plz tell how to completely reset tablet) ive read "system Images " thread but i didn understand some things
here is my recover steps: (for a500 which is bricked)
for a500 is normal:
root it
put the system.img into a500
connect to the computer with adb and follow the codes:
su
dd if=/sdcard/system.img of=/dev/block/mmcblk0p3
then reboot

You might very well have ruined your tablet.
I'm not a developer or coder so I can't make any sense of the code you posted but if a reset didn't fix it then you've certainly deleted something important. Hopefully someone has some ideas.
If not, then maybe you can return it? And next time, don't delete something unless you know what it is you're deleting.
ok ive recovered from image, but now wifi is not working , what should i do?
There are posts about having to change file permissions to fix wifi. Search this forum, there are a few.
edit - linked post
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1074449&highlight=wifi+permission
yeah ive read this but i dont know how to move that files to system folder on devide, wifi is down , so i cant download any file managing apps from market and theres no any file managers on stock Rom
If you've got the adb working, you can use the command mv to move the file.
I'm not sure of the exact path involved, but for example. the file is in /mnt/sdcard/filetobemoved and needs to go into /sytem/lib/modules
mv /mnt/sdcard/filetobemoved /system/lib/modules
That'd put it in the location you need. To change the permissions, you'd use the command chmod
chmod 655 /system/lib/modules/filetobemoved
The 655 is an octal(0-7) representation of the file's permissions. I'm not sure what permissions it needs, but you could try 655 as a start unless someone else knows for sure.
if you want, hit me up on msn, I can try to walk you through it: [email protected]

No clue. I really should start reading up on HC app development and at least familiarize myself with that environment.
I haven't rooted yet cause I'm e'scarded to.
ahh i cant replace that files , somehow installed astro manager(through docsttogo) but i cant remove/replace/rename that files in system/lib/modules it says i dont have permission to do this.
tryed in connectbot type "mv /mnt/sdcard/filetobemoved /system/lib/modules"
got this "failed on '/system/lib/modules/filename' - cross-device link"
im rooted what if

type mount and paste/retype the line that has /system in it. It might be mounted read only.
or try the cp command in place of mv
edit - also, the filetobemoved is just an example. I think one of the filenames is bcm4329.ko but I'm not sure. so /system/lib/modules/bcm4329.ko would be the full path

Are you logged into the tablet using adb's shell? I've only used that once on a different tablet, but iirc the commands are standard Unix/Linux commands. Someone correct me if I'm wrong but aren't you already logged in as superuser like this? You don't need to 'sudo' or 'su' to switch over do you?
I'm not familiar enough with this specific environment to figure out what might be keeping you from placing those files in that location. The command to check the partitions mount options is
mount
It should return a bunch of text, one line of which is gonna be the /system partition. If it's ro(read only) then you can't write to it and would need to remount it.
yeah it looks like it is "ro"
ive got /system ext4 ro
how to remount)
My knowledge of adb is limited as well. All I know is that I can connect to it, type: adb devices (in the command prompt) to make sure it sees my tab then 'adb push filename.extension /directory/structure' to force files... Conversly, I think adb pull filename.extension /directory/structure will grab files on the tab if you know what they are called and where they are located.

what was the /dev/block/mtdblock for /system?
there is a number after it...for example /dev/block/mtdblock1
mount -o rw,remount -t ext4 /dev/block/mtdblock1 /system
would remount it read/write, provided that it is mtdblock1, change the number depending on what your device has.
yeah now /system have "rw", but it anyway refuses to copy using mv(failed on '/system/lib/modules/filename' - cross-device link"
) or astro manager

If cp won't put it there either, I'm out of ideas. Maybe ask in the other thread how they were able to copy/move the file and set the permissions?
I know it may not be really classy, but how about downloading an .apk That will let you mount the drive, to an sd card in a computer then transfer that to the Acer. (If it's an extreme case and nothing else will work..not condoning piracy, but don't know what would work...)
or is it possible to copy the system data from a Titanium backup and send it over so he can restore the missing files?
This following step I can't be responsible for it's safety. It looks safe to my eyes, but proceed having been forewarned. I did some research and you might be able to use dd to get the file there.
dd if=/mnt/sdcard/filname of=/system/lib/modules/filename
Hi everyone. As a new Kindle Fire user, I bought mine AFTER the recent Kindle 6.2 update. After following step-by-step the instructions posted on this forum to root KF, I seemed to have succeeded at my first attempt. However, when trying to copy and paste either vending.apk or amarket.apk to system/app folder using File Expert which I got from Amazon store, I couldn't get it to work. This means I don't see either apps in the system app folder after I paste them there. I followed the instructions to the T and rebooted KF, still no show. I then tried to install it via adb, I was able to "adb install" googleservice frameworks on KF. But when trying to "adb push" the market app to system/app, I keep getting "adb access denied". I tried re-rooting with superoneclick, still can't "adb push".
I really don't know what went wrong. BTW, I could hard install the market app on to KF and gained access to the market. (I thought KF blocked it.) But all my download from android market seem unsuccessful. I need help. Thanks.
Problem solved. And here's what I found out and how I made it work. Thanks for everyone who posted to help.
After trying what everyone suggested here, I still couldn't get r/w perssion to the system folder. I reset my KF to factory setting and started all over again. This time I realized it was the File Expert app that's causing this problem. Although it seems like File Expert could gain full access to the system, it doesn't allow you to make any modification to the system folder. I know someone claimed it worked on theirs. But if your File Expert comes from Amazon app store, it DOES NOT work when you try to paste anything into the system. When I realized that ROOT EXPLORER is no longer available on Amazon, I figured that could be the reason. After downloading Root Explorer to my PC and installed it onto KF, everything worked like a charm! So for those of you who encounter similar problems, it's not you. It could be the File Expert app that you got from Amazon.
You need to mount system as writable
Thanks Felnarion. But I did that. It didn't help. I followed the instructions step by step. Don't where the problem is. I find it hard to believe that KF allows me to do regular install of android market(the market icon even shows on the carousel) but I can't do it the "sneaky" way? Anyone else tried installing market app directly from the sd card?
In that case I think it's your app. I just downloaded file expert and had problems copying to /system as well.
Try root explorer, haven't had any problems with it.
File Expert is broken in regards to mounting folders RW/RO. Even though it claims it has successfully changed permissions, it never does or they don't stick. I suffered the exact same issue, regarding mounting folders RW/RO, and had to install Root Explorer to get the job done.
Code:
mount -o rw,remount -t ext4 /dev/block/platform/mmci-omap-hs.1/by-name/system /system
is the adb command

This might be a dumb question, but did you
Code:
su
and click OK on the Superuser prompt on the KF screen prior to the adb push attempts? Were you able to mount /system rw through adb? If adb can't get root access there's no way File Expert will be able to.

File Expert works fine. I've used it to do all my root related installs. You just have to make sure you check the 'Root Explorer' box under Settings>File Explorer Settings before trying to do any /system mounts, it's off by default.
Thank you everyone for your help. If I remember correctly, I did try "su" in adb. but not sure if entered the code correctly. I also heard about File Expert could be the cause when it comes to gaining permissions. I checked root explorer on File expert settings as well. I'm beginning to wonder if my hard install of market app ,which worked to my surprise, messed things up. I will try to reset my KF to factory setting and start over again. I will report back with the result. Once again, I really appreciate everyone's help.

Interesting. I was the one it worked for and I'm pretty sure I got mine from the Market, not Amazon. Good thing I haven't clicked that update button from within Amazon App Store.
Thank you for following up. Perfect example of how it can help others.
Glad you got everything sorted.
I have rooted my S4 i9505 and installed Samsung Multi Window Manager, but when I try to open the app I get the following error message. . .
java.io.FileNotFoundException: / system/csc/others.xml: open failed: EROFS (Read-only file system)
I also briefly see this message on a Toast
Mount -o remount, re /dev/block/mtdblock5/system; chmod 777 /system/csc/others.xml
It looks to me like the app is unable to get access to the file others.xml.
SuperSU says the app has been granted access, but it just won't work.
Has anyone else seen this bahaviour or know how to fix it?

Aaagh was hoping this would be an easy one. . . .
Let me see if I can tease some other ideas out of you. . .
I'm clutching at straws here, but the next thing I want to try is uninstalling and reinstalling SuperSu, but before I do that, could someone just confirm that it is safe to do.
I ask, as on the Google Play it says you have to be careful, but I'm hoping that only applies if you are going to replace it with something else.
Anywho, if someone could just confirm that, that would be great.
I'm also thinking of running...
Mount -o remount, re /dev/block/mtdblock5/system; chmod 777 /system/csc/others.xml
through Terminal Emulator, again was just hoping to check if this is safe thing to do.
Thanks
I'm still trying to solve this problem. . .:fingers-crossed:
I ran the following command. . .
Mount -o remount, re /dev/block/mtdblock5/system; chmod 777 /system/csc/others.xml
through Terminal Emulator to see what would happened and I got the following message. . .
No such file or directory.
So, I checked to see if mtdblock5 exists on the phone, and it doesn't.
So todays question is should mtdblock5 exist on my phone? (I seem to be the only one who can't get this app to work)

Sorry to drag up such an old thread but I too am having the exact same issue as mentioned in the OP.
I've got a Note 10.1 N8010 with stock rom, rooted, Android 4.4.2. I've checked the permissions to the file and indeed they are 777 and the file is writable. As a test, I made the file unwritable using a file manager, upon launching Multi Window Manager it automatically corrects this back to 777 again so it knows the file is there and is able to change the permissions on it but it still says FileNotFound?
I wondered if the partition that the file resides on was mounted as RO but I've downloaded another app which has changed /system to RW but still no joy.
Desperately looking for a solution to this, any help would be very much appreciated.
