what's the big difference between ICS and JB?
I had an N7 and the only difference I can find is Google Now (which did nothing for me on my tablet)
Also, what will we lose?
I know flash is not present but can still be loaded on, although not seen anyone say it works, but not looked that hard.
BBC iplayer?
anybody knows when is the update?
im waiting the update to my GT 3110
im from portugal, i dont know if the update out at same day for all...??!?!?
great thread
i am waiting for jb for my GT 3110 too, does anybody know when we will get the update?
I hope the "official" update for the Galaxy Tab 2 with have these issues fixed that the currently leaked versions have....
-portrait only home screens
-mike not working in some apps
-battery percentage on notification bar

Butter. Really, most of the differences are not changes you can see. They cleaned up the code and are compiling it with a newer toolchain. It helped optimize things more and provides for a more fluid interface.
I have an unlocked version. According to the TmoNews article, the unlocked versions should see the update first as they they have to go through carrier testing.
Hopefully the Tab version will come out quickly, then we'll just have to wait for AT&T to muck around with uit for 6 months before the rest of the devices get it.
There's a video with all changes uploaded in youtube, I can't post it 'cause I'm a new member but is there, the google event release of jb almost 3 months ago.

Alhamdulillah, can't hardly wait..
The update is still not available yet for my country, so I have installed my own with germany version
JB is great..
In 2011, 2012 and this year Samsung brought plenty of Android devices. Today we received, through our insider the first pre-list about upcoming Android updates from the Korean giant. Samsung will update the Galaxy S II and Note to Android 4.2.2 but this will be the last update for these devices. This means the Galaxy S II and Note received an update from 2.3.6 to 4.0.4 to 4.1.2 and will stop at Android version 4.2.2. Google is the only OEM which gives so many updates to its devices but Samsung is doing the same now. Below is the list of devices, which will receive the Android 4.2.2 update from Samsung.
But there is more according to the first pre-list, Samsung will only update 5 devices to Android 5.0, which is not yet announced by Google but is expected to be announced at the upcoming Google IO. The devices which will be getting the Android 5.0 update are the Galaxy S III, Galaxy S4, Note II, Note 8.0 and Note 10.1. Our insider finished with saying that plenty of MID-range Android devices of 2012 / 2013 will also receive a value pack update. Samsung did this before with the first generation of Galaxy devices. The insider confirmed Google’s next version is expected to be a big update and Samsung will take some time to update their devices.
Below is the list of devices which is not confirmed by Samsung yet. But is confirmed by our insider.
* End at Android 4.2.2 update.

I read a while back that they are introducing some kind of theming/skinning engine to enable carriers to update quicker, hopefully this engine will enable themers to have a good old hack and play! How deep into ui this theming goes is anyone's guess
This is great to know S3 will get another year of updates especially knowing also the S3 will get all the features of the S4 that do not require new sensor/hardware
Given the money they are making with the Galaxy S series, it would seem a really smart move to invest a small fraction of those benefits in updating the Android OS version, to buy user's loyalty. I still don't trust the source completely, but the strategy makes sense to me.
Ofcourse this is not official so we shall wait and see

Seriously...do you still expect s2 to get 5.0? You should be very happy if it gets 4.2.2...it really has similar cpu architecture and that means its still capable of running newest androids, samsung wont upgrade because of age, not capatibillity

Is this a response to the Apple claim that the S4 is being launched with last year's version of Android, that the Android market is fragmented over so many versions and capabilities?

Would be nice if the S3 gets android 5, but it's likely most S3's will have crapped out by then because of the faulty nand.

I have a theory that on each boot the emmc chip plays a little game of russian roulette with our partition structure and format - blowing out the brains of the unfortunate partition that happens to be chosen.
The result of which poor partition got terminated varies from a wipe and reflash upto a hardbrick and warranty repair...
I respect samsung for the S2 updates.
The S2 is a historical phone, it's gone through 3 major updates.
And they are doing the same for the S3.
They took down the whole market with just 3 phones, and now they are looking forward to adjust themselves on the throne with a 4th one.
One thing i can't wait for is the S4 features to play with on the S3.
It's almost confirmed that we will get them, as i see strings of those features in the MB3 leak.
All i can say, good job Samsung.
The only let down of Samsung is their care against the developer community, if they would be more like Sony. I'd never buy anything else than a galaxy device.

It's already confirmed. Samsung said we will get all the S4 features which aren't directly hardware dependent (features which require certain hardware to be there, like the infrared thingy)
Android isn't even completely optimized for Quad Core yet, The Galaxy S3 has at least another year of support left.
I love when a new Android version comes out. It makes our phone brand new for a while. I hope version 5.0 or whatever can fo that for me so I can keep this bad boy another year.

We got a 99% chance of getting KLP because there's no way samsung will update the GS4 only + The GS2 got 4.0/4.1/4.2 and the GS3 got 4.1/4.2(leaked) only so the GS3 will probably get 1 more update after 4.2 which is 5.0.
According to Samsung, the Galaxy S III and the Galaxy S III mini are not capable of running KitKat smoothly as both have only 1GB of RAM, which has apparently not been enough to get KitKat working properly on either device. Here’s the official statement
“In order to facilitate an effective upgrade on the Google platform, various hardware performances such as the memory (RAM, ROM, etc.), multi-tasking capabilities, and display must meet certain technical expectations. The Galaxy S3 and S3 mini 3G versions come equipped with 1GB RAM, which does not allow them to effectively support the platform upgrade. As a result of the Galaxy S3 and S3 mini 3G versions’ hardware limitation, they cannot effectively support the platform upgrade while continuing to provide the best consumer experience. Samsung has decided not to roll-out the KitKat upgrade to Galaxy S3 and S3 mini 3G versions, and the KitKat upgrade will be available to the Galaxy S3 LTE version as the device’s 2GB RAM is enough to support the platform upgrade.” – Samsung Mobile UK
Click to collapse
This is as official as things can get, and Samsung’s statement confirms our fears of the amount of RAM being the issue. Now, before you say “but KitKat supports 512MB RAM devices and is running on a couple of new Samsung devices with 512MB of RAM already!”, KitKat runs fine with that amount of memory only on stock Android, which does not have any of the added features or bloat that Samsung (and other non-Nexus phones come with.) Also, the newer Samsung devices are running a lighter and newer version of TouchWiz that debuted on the Galaxy S5, which we’re guessing is something Samsung doesn’t want to bring to the Galaxy S III as it would affect sales of its newer devices (and not to mention those low-end devices don’t have all the features that you would find on flagship devices.)
In any case, it looks like Android 4.3 is the last update the Galaxy S III will get (and Android 4.2 on the S III mini), and the official statement should finally put the matter to rest. The Galaxy S III had a good run, going from Android 4.0 to Android 4.3 since launch, but it looks like Samsung won’t be extending any further update love to one of its best-selling smartphones.

I definitely think it will happen, but you never know until it happens. I don't know why you "dream" about it, is it nice to have the newer Android officially from Samsung, yes, but is it that much better than 4.3, no. Don't get me wrong though, I would love to see it coming to my S3, but when it doesn't, no biggie!
4.1.2 is faster and smoother than 4.3,that's why I would like to have a change. I can't stay with 4.3 for long.
I'm sure that samsung will release it. 3.5 months are left before Galaxy S3 will get 2 years old and that's a pretty big number. It's not possible that Samsung will keep us empty all this months.

With problems Samsung had in releasing 4.3, it should be sometime before they release 4.4.X.... But when it comes I think it should be very good since KK is optimized for 512MB rams..

I think that KK will be much better for S3 than JB4.3 ... reason optimizations for older and slower devices.. and now S3 is just that.
I hope that we will get it... anyway if not... there is Omni rom that work super fast on S3.

I don't think the S3 would receive any attention from Samsung when S5 is around the corner and when the International S4 (i9505)still doesn't have official kitkat.
But then previous Samsung galaxies have at least two major android version upgrades
S1: Eclair Froyo Gingerbread (2.1,2.2,2.3)
S2: Gingerbread Ice cream sandwich jellybean (2.3,4.0,4.1)
And now S3: Ice cream sandwich Jellybean jellybean (4.0,4.1,4.3)
Technically the S3 already has more than the previous models as the 4.3 update naturally incorporates all the features from 4.2, but then all changes between 4.1 and 4.3 are minor so it doesn't really count (and 4.4 is frankly just as lame to be honest).
I have read several articles all over the web that the S3 WILL get the 4.4... it´s even supposed to be sometime in late march. No official confirmation yet but several leaks from within Samsung has been tweeted. These tweets come from reliable sources.
It´s also still a fact that the S3 is still manufactured. This would be worth something, wouldn´t it... even for Samsung?

I can't see Samsung releasing 4.4 for S3, when they're about to release the S5. They'll be hoping they can shift S3 users on the 2 year cycle over to the S5, so they won't be wanting to do anything to prolong the functionality or life of the S3. Expect samsung to cease production of the S3 upon the S5 unveil, but continue S4 production and support. I can imagine they'll push 4.4 to some of their popular older budget and mid-range phones though.

In does say: Updates begin today, Samsung says — it didn't mention on which devices — so stay tuned.
Since the note 3 has already got it, presumably this means that the S4 would follow next. Then, the current mid ranged phones (S4 mini, galaxy mega), after that, last year's flagships (note 2, s3) and finally last year's mid range phones (s3 mini)
Yesterday, Samsung U.S. confirmed that 14 devices will soon be making the switch to Android 4.4 KitKat. However, there was no mention of when international models would be receiving the KitKat update. Fret not users, as we now have confirmation as to which international models will be getting the Android 4.4 KitKat update. The list is Samsung Poland’s official KitKat update list that was obtained today by Polish blogger Robert Nawrowski. It is to be noted that not all models listed below would be making the switch to KitKat right away. They will move to Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, and eventually receive KitKat.
Here are the international models that will be making the switch to Android 4.4 KitKat:
Galaxy Note 3
Galaxy Note 2
Galaxy S4
Galaxy S4 Active
Galaxy S4 Zoom
Galaxy Mega 6.3
Galaxy Mega 5.8
Galaxy Grand
Galaxy Express
Galaxy Note 8.0
Galaxy Note 10.1
Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition
Galaxy Tab 3 7.0
Galaxy Tab 3 8.0
Galaxy Tab 3 10.1

The list is identical to the list of models detailed by Samsung U.S., although unlike the U.S. list, it isn’t clear as to when these mobiles will receive the OTA update. Most devices launched last year are included in the list, with a few notable exclusions like the Galaxy Core. It is interesting to see that the Galaxy S3 won’t be making the switch to Android 4.4 KitKat, but considering that it is now close to two years since its official launch, we won’t blame Samsung for giving the S3 a miss.

The good news is that this list is even bigger than the US-centric one, with 17 devices on it: Galaxy Note 3, Galaxy S4, Galaxy S4 Active, Galaxy S4 Mini, Galaxy S4 Zoom, Galaxy Note II, Galaxy Mega 6.3, Galaxy Mega 5.8, Galaxy Grand, Galaxy Express 2, Galaxy Note 10.1, Galaxy Note 10.1 2014 Edition, Galaxy Note 8.0, Galaxy Tab 3 7.0, Galaxy Tab 3 8.0, Galaxy Tab 3 10.1, and Galaxy Grand 2 LTE. Some of these may jump directly to 4.4, and others that are running older software versions may still receive some interim updates as well.

I wonder the DUOS(I9082) version of Galaxy Grand will have the official ones.
but sure thing is if Galaxy Grand will receive the official update, it can make our existing 4.4 ROMs more stable.
Also, Galaxy S III wont receive it because of not enough RAM (1Gb), same then Galaxy Grand has the same amount
or RAM (1Gb) though will recieve an Official ones.
I think of two things on this:
1. If Galaxy Grand will receive Kitkat, Galaxy S III will receive it well, worst case, both phones will not receive it.
2. Galaxy Grand (only 12Months Old)is around Google's 18-month rule, while Galaxy S III is almost 20months Old.
it's for sure grand will recieve 4.3 and let's hope 4.4 in future after android 5 update release in future:victory:
but am gona keep my lovely grand for that long until it taste real kitkat love my grand so much:crying:

Depending heavily on personnel choice that someone uses dual Sim or not, claiming that custom Roms don't give full functionality sounds baseless..
Gimme second reason except dual sim problem.!
I get that many are scared to root and gain extra functional access to device(as it might brick the phone ), but one can't truly become a tester if he hasn't bricked his device(trust me, 100% guys brick their device for some obvious reasons and inexperience). That is why Xda is for..

Just use boring, laging, sucking touchwiz and free 200mb of RAM.
They will move to Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, and eventually receive Android 4.4 KitKat.
