[Q] miracast for xoom? - Omni Q&A

I have omnirom kit kat big part on my xoom. There is no option for turning on wireless display in the settings. The wireless chip and driver should support it. Why is miracast not available?

Because only Qualcomm chips have the proper video encoder support in AOSP.

Thanks!

[Q] Will miracast in 4.2 work on my old N7?

As announced, JB 4.2 will support miracast which allows display mirroring through wifi-direct. I don´t understand whether this feature require certain hardware, and my question is wheter this will work on my 16 GB Nexus 7 when it is updated to 4.2? Anyone know?
Tegra 3 supports it and it uses wifi direct so I'm confident it will be supported.
Sent from my XT910 using Tapatalk 2
I hope that's true. All the hardware indicates it is able to support it, but not necessarily that it will actually be made available. The Nexus 10 doesn't have the option for Miracast, despite having WiFi direct/Android 4.2.
I don't get what all the worry about will it support it. The only hardware thing necessary is does the device have hardware encoding, and this does. Yes the N7 has wifi direct but ANY device could be upgraded to support wifi direct. It's not like wifi direct is some additional hardware on a wifi chip. Any wifi could technically support wifi direct.
So I would be really surprised if this doesn't support miracast. From what I've read the hardware encoder has a big influence on latency (as does the cpu). So one question that I would like answered is, how low is the latency? Movies/browsing etc doesn't really matter, but for gaming.
Has any article mentioned how low the latency is with miracast? This will vary from device to device of course, but even knowing for one device might give a ballpark of what to expect with the n7
I can't believe miracast is not supported by the N10! Mind boggling...
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda premium
yes I just read that. Does it not have hardware encoding? The nexus 4 definitely has miracast enabled but not the nexus 10?!
Where is written that N10 doesn't support Miracast? I watched android developers hangout on YouTube a few days ago and if I remember correctly then they told both N4 and N10 support it. When someone asked about N7 they first told no, but then said they don't know for sure. Unfortunately YouTube is down, so I can't double check that at the moment.
Here:
Miracast is the Wi-Fi Alliance's standard for wireless streaming of video, and its addition to Jelly Bean made us very excited -- Android finally has a response to AirPlay. Imagine our disappointment, then, upon learning that Miracast isn't supported in the Nexus 10, at least not yet. It is there in the Nexus 4, a perplexing state of affairs that Google wasn't able to give us much clarity on, but it does appear that this is not a hardware limitation, since all the communication takes place over WiFi. If Miracast isn't going to be software-enabled in every Android 4.2 device then we're struggling to see how it's actually part of the OS, and we're definitely feeling let down about its potential to improve the platform as a whole.

It's not like the nexus 10 ships with 4.1.2. It comes with 4.2 but yet miracast is disabled?! But he's wrong about pointing out wifi as the potential hardware limitation. Everything has wifi (and could potentially support wifi direct as that is done in software) the hardware barrier is hardware encoding. Does anyone know the details of the chipset the nexus 10 has?
Interesting... Cnet review says it is supported, but they didn't have a dongle to test it.
I believe even the Verge/Google video said it is supported, but again, I can't check that either at the moment. Why is YouTube down when you need it the most?
Does anyone know if Miracast supports audio only? I know that it supports audio and video, but what happens if I want to connect it to my AV receiver and use it for audio only?
Edit: YouTube works again. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z92fwFQntG8 at 56:30 they say that both devices have HDMI and Miracast.
I think the software in review devices wasn't final. Some N10 review devices didn't have user accounts either, but the final software clearly will have that, so I believe its the same case with Miracast.

That's what I want to do, but is it possible? Does the Netgear ptv3000 work if it's not connected to TV?
It is possible that it doesn't allow connections from android device if its not connected to TV. For example Nexus Q doesn't allow streaming YouTube to it if its not connected to TV.
I'm thinking it should bypass through the a/v receiver but I am simply speculating... it's going to be one of those things we will have to test with or a/v systems
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I727 using xda premium
I would buy and test it but I can't I can't find this product in any shop in Europe. And US shops that have it in stock don't ship to Europe.
I'm in the u.s. and I will buy it once the 4.2 update and miracast are official for the N7. Then, I will report back with my findings on how the netgear miracast box interacts with my a/v receiver.
I'm so pumped for this feature!
Sent from my Nexus 7 using xda premium
I never thought about audio only. One thing I hope is possible is to turn off the n7's screen but still stream. It's one thing if you are interacting with it, but say you are streaming a movie, why have the n7's screen on for 2 hrs? Or even a game where you are using a gamepad and you aren't touching the device at all.
I've wondered if that functionality is in the spec, but I doubt. The other thing I wonder about is how low the latency is for gaming.
I found a US store that has it in stock and ships internationally. Only bad news is that shipping costs more then the device :| I'm not sure I want to pay that much for it.
About games, I have no idea if the screen can be off when streaming, but I hope so. One interesting thing that was discussed in Google developers hangout was a api that let's app developers use the two screens (tablet and connected display) as separate displays. For example the game runs on TV while your android device has buttons or whatever else on display.

Mhl

Hi guys,
Anyone know if the n4 has mhl support like its predecessor?
Cheers
It does.
Actually, it doesn't. It uses a different technology called SlimPort HDMI which is very similar but doesn't require having your phone connected to a power source like MHL does.
It also supports Miracast which is a wireless solution.
Great, thanks. Was always disappointed that my nexus 7 didn't have any way to connect to HDMI. Well my desire s is on its way out the door on the 13th.

So does this mean that it will use the same adapter, or will there be a different one that is required to get HDMI out?
Miracast does look cool, but isn't that useful until more devices include it in or I buy a receiver for it (which I will).
I'm interested in this as well, SlimPort looks nice, except the price ($30) is way higher than MHL adapters. Are we sure that it won't work with MHL?

Miracast streamer?

Is there a device yet that exists that plugs into the TV that will let you use this? Or is this a tech that's not in use yet until the nexus 4? My 2 Google TVs suck and I'm about to give up hope on the platform...
I just ordered a Netgear NeoTV 300 which is supposed to work with Miracast and WiDi. I can't confirm until I have both it and the phone, but it wasn't too expensive and it seems like a cool gadget.
Is there a dongle you can buy?? Was trying to find it but can't find it
I can't see this technology being put into a USB dongle. If it streams HD video and audio, I think it would require a HDMI connection. With the added need for WiFi connectivity, I don't see how that can all be supported in a dongle unless it's built into the TV already and the dongle is just for WiFi.
I could be mistaken, but I think all the components would need a full router-sized receiver.

NeoTV300 doesn't have WiDi.
I want to use WiDi to stream on my old HDTV with external harddrive to link to HDTV without going through wifi router. Netgear NeoTV Max has usb port on the side. In the specs it shows possible. I'm wondering does it work well with external harddrive to see on HDTV over WiDi?
Oh, sorry, I meant NTV300SL not NTV300. I didn't realize the entry level units had the same model number.
Does anyone know if a PS3 will support it? Or perhaps a Vizio Smart TV? (I have less hope for the latter, but I have a feeling I might be in luck with the PS3.)

PS3 doesn't have WiDi building. So it won't work for PS3 to TV. You need a device that supported WiDi and a TV that can received it. Both ends have to be WiDi compatible. That depends on if Vizio Smart TV have WiDi build-in. Otherwise you'll have to go with the boxes. I list some from the above post.

Intel properly offered for Sony to license WiDi but they didn't put it in their newer slim model. The older slim one doesn't have it too.

intel widi DLNA works on PS3. I've been trying to connect my laptop to the freaking PTV3000 but i've had no luck but my PS3 can see the laptop intel widi DLNA and it actually works with 1080p mkvs over wireless though you can tell the quality of the stream is less than optimal but it's still solid.

Aw, so that explained why they put WiDi supported PS3 in a way. I was replying to just WiDi build into PS3 direct without going through DLNA which still work but limited on files formats and quality since it's going through home network. I am planning to do this setup. Android now supported alot of video formats accept 10bit (with artifacts).

From what I have read it shows up on the PS3 as a media server and once connected begins screen mirroring until you switch it to an extended desktop. I can't test this right now because I only have macs, but I assume android would only be using the screen mirroring function anyway.

Media Servers are different from Miracast. I was talking about how the PS3 interprets the Miracast signal. I have a Media Server set up already, but I do not have a Miracast or Intel WiDi source to test on the PS3 since they are incompatible with macs.
I do not care if the phone will directly connect to the PS3 or through my wireless network. My concern is if the video will get from my phone to tv. It seems like I already own all the needed components (besides the N4 coming next week) to make this work.

We'll see when you guys report back using N4 stream through WiDI DLNA of PS3 how's the quality holding up. I have PS3 but it's not connecting to a network. So, I won't be doing these tests but to wait for your results.
biggiestuff claimed using Media Server/DLNA of PS3, you lost quality integrity. Though PS3 support Widi DLNA, I doubt the quality would be any better. The best way is to use WiDi of N4 straight to a Neo Max like box that's compatible with WiDi for HDTV, because all it does it mirror the images like with HDMI when connecting to a laptop to a HDTV.
This is one of the reasons I want to get the Nexus 4.
I think I just need something like the Netgear Push2TV PTV3000
http://www.netgear.com/home/products/hometheater/media-players/PTV3000.aspx
so my TV can receive the video and audio via HDMI.
Might need an app as well?

I'd hold fire on the Netgear - my understanding is that their current range support the draft standard and aren't reliable as yet. I think I've seen a review by J Raphael that indicates there are issues.
EDIT: can't find the review (I've been reading a lot of them as part of my pre-Nexus buildup), but I did find this warning: http://forums.androidcentral.com/go...l-buying-pre-compliant-miracast-adapters.html
Okay, so NTV300SL supports WiDi.. but does it also support Miracast? The tech is different, and I don't know if its worth investing $60 in PTV300 when NTV300SL has the same capabilties (assuming it supports miracast)

[Q] Whats the status of Miracast?

Thinking of getting a NETGEAR Push2TV Wireless Display Adapter PTV3000-100NAS Wireless Interface but I was wondering if anything was done with Miracast on the N10?
I can get mine to connect
But not able to display yet
Hoping for that capability to be added in 4.2.2

I've not seen a Broadcom(our WiFi chipset provider) driver that supports Miracast. Back when I last looked, Qualcomm had the only working implementation.

I am interested at this also in order to replace my old Home theater pc.
Does anyone knows if it's supporting the following?
1) is there some rooting guide?
2) can it play 1080p movies normally from external hard drive?
3) does it support 5:1 Dts audio surround when connected with optical? Is this plug the standard coaxial plug?
4) can I connect a wireless Logitech mouse +keyboard? Will they work normally?

Looking at this unit myself -- conflicting info on rooting -- some people say its already rooted , I asked a vendor and they told me it was but other people contacted Merimobile and were told it couldn't be rooted .
Also found this on another forum which might help your questions
"The stock rom is pretty robust (with 720p kernel), it has usb audio option so the digital and passthrough works OOB, however the spdif passthrough doesn't work for XBMC, [updated 09-10-2013, with a patched libmedia.so and modded XBMC it can now passthrough perfectly. ] but it works for stock video players as well as mxplay, bsplayer."
However I believe new firmware is being shipped 17-10-2013 so things might have changed -- lets hope someone with the latest firmware can give us a quality review
HI all,
I'm very interested by this CS968 but I have a few questions :
- As it's android 4.2, does it manage multiusers ? This could be useful wit family use...
- Anyone tried Skype ? I'm choosing this model for the integrated webcam so...I hope it's working !
- is it possible to "mirror" screens from other android devices ? Like Nexus 7 or GS3 ? I'd like to be able to display my phone screen on the TV...
- is the device already rooted or is there a way to root it ?
If someone have the answers...
Thanks !
