Standard answer here:
Find a maintainer in your device's own forums.
Projects like this are done by volunteers. As such, people choose to work on devices they want to work on. Some of us will take on devices upon request in special circumstances, but only if we've got some initial interest in them. (For example, most of the core team love Oppo because they've been so nice to us, so when they send us a device, we go out of our way to support it. Within limits, though - being MTK-based has really killed the R819.)
In the case of Samsung devices - many of us worked with Samsungs in the past and never want to touch them again. So if you want such an oddball/niche device supported, you'll need to find someone in that device's forums that's interested in doing the bringup.

[Q] So Many part numbers

I'm in the market for a used 7" Galaxy tab. I want to be able to flash ICS on it so naturally I looked at which devices have ICS ports already posted in the development section.
It looks like those that have ICS support also have cellular data (which I don't need.) so I started looking for used Galaxy Tabs with a cellular modem.
I found some decently priced Sprint Galaxy Tab 7" and the Tmobile Galaxy tab 7". but it looks like these are not considered to be P1000 so will they work with Cm9/ ICS?
Also, how is the GPS chip in these units? I have a Galaxy tab 8.9 and the GPS is the best I have ever seen in a tablet/phone with a full lock in under 3 seconds.
Tmobile galaxy tab 7" is SGH-T849
I am using one that I flashed with Overcome 4.1 ROM with JPZ modem and using it in Australia
It becomes exactly like a P1000. I can get 3G/HSDPA speed, I can make and receive phone calls, everything like a P1000.
thank you for the response. Have you tried cm9?
CM9 has been ported to the Sprint Tab, (in fact to the Verizon tab as well,) the kernel is not perfect at the moment, so while the Tab won't be bricked, you may experience a few more issues than if you had a GSM tab. Bear in mind, both of these are in alpha, so they have issues. As with any Alpha, Beta, or work in progress, things will not be nearly as smooth as they will be once the rom is in RC (release candidate) or final. Also, you will probably want to keep tabs, (no pun intended,) on the rom's progress and keep flashing newer versions to get enhanced functionality and stability.
Here are the two posts in the dev section about ICS on the Galaxy Tab. They are both the same rom, they are created and worked on by the same devs. They just represent different stages of development. I would suggest reading through both:
The Current Work in Progress:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1385153
(This seems to be the more current build)
The Alpha 3 Version of the above ROM:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1322059
(This is updated with each new Alpha, rather than on a rolling basis like the thread above)
I've never had any trouble getting a GPS lock in my Sprint GT7, I have on occasion used it as a GPS navigator (via Google Maps Navigation,) while in rental cars. It never steered me wrong, (pun intended.)
I hope this info makes your choice easier. Good Luck!
Thank you. Lots of good information.
If you haven't bought one, and don't mind paying a little bit more, I think you should get the GSM version (usually the T-mobile one is a bit cheaper?).
You see there are a lot more custom ROMs on GSM than CDMA, so more choices.
I think mainly because GSM is widely deployed worldwide, so we get more devs participating in that hardware.
I haven't used CM9 on my T-mobile tab, but I am 100% sure it will work. Just haven't taken the plunge.
Yeah, I'm trying to find the GSM version but the cheapest I've seen is $275 used.
The Sprint version is readily available for around $200.
This is going to replace my Pioneer navigation unit in my car so audio out via the dock is important. It will connect to a 4 channel amp. Reliable GPS is a must.
I have an 8.9" Galaxy tab which I love but it's too big and expensive to put in the dash permanently and there is no easy way to make it removable at that size while still making it look decent.
A 7" original galaxy tab is the perfect fit. Even the 7.0 plus is slightly too big.
Anyway, I'll keep looking for a cheap SGH-T849, one is bound to pop up at some point.

Verizon 7.7

Hi,
I'm trying to get some understanding of the VZ version of this tab and what it would take to build a custom rom for it.
Been playing with custom roms going all the way back to a htc g1 so I'm pretty familiar with the processes involved from the user side of things.
First a couple clarifying questions specifically about the VZ tab, is this one called 6815 or is it a 6800/6810?
If it is a 6815 as I'm assuming has there hasn't been any custom rom work done up to now? I wasn't able to find any.
What would it take to get the CM team of one of the other ****-hot dev teams to develop for this tab? Is it simply a lack of access to the hardware?
If it is lack of hardware perhaps we could join together as a community and raise some funds to support the purchase of a dedicated dev tablet. Heck I might be willing to donate my own for a time.
Thanks for any ideas / answers.

Verizon SCH-i815 the 6800 and 6810 are for the rest of the world.
The Verizon version incorporates its 4G LTE and an infrared blaster.
I would also be happy to contribute to any development on this tablet. Love the thing, but I know the potential of it with development.

[Q] ELI5: What are the challenges of building/porting an AOSP ROM on T23x?

Hey all, new Tab 4 7.0 owner here. I've only ever owned HTC EVO devices, which have a wide selection of custom everything to choose from, so empty Android/Original Development sections are a new concept for me.
From what I read, development hasn't started because we don't have a stable recovery environment yet, but assuming we get that down, what would be the main hinderances (device-specifc issues) of getting AOSP on this tablet? What can we non-developers do to help?
Thanks for all your answers!

As far as I know, we have a bit of lack of support fro Devs. We do have great Devs however some (if not most) of them don't actually own the device so they are trying to work from other devices including the Tab 3 series. Another thing is lack of tools and information from Samsung. Even though they do provide Devs with tools and info, they are a bit secretive when it comes to development of the actual OS. So that's that. What you can do is to offer to test new methods but you must accept the risks which involves Hard Bricking of the the tab. Other than that just be patient and privide any information you can give

As a contributor that works with the Tab 3 7in version, I can tell you that the Marvel cpu/board set that Samsung used on our (and your) 7in wifi versions is the main problem.
We have managed to get a version of CM 11 working, but some essentials such as wifi, bluetooth, and hardware composer are not easy with Marvel. We still have a lot of work to do and very little time to spend trying.
And the previous answer is also correct, you need more devs for the Tab 4.

Galaxy S6 Firmware

Hey all, i am thinking of buying a note 4 and in my country they sell both variants the F and the C, I dont care much about custom aosp roms and i would like to ask, the S6 firmware when it comes on what variant it can be ported more easily? If not the whole rom then maybe most of the features?
Thanks

It's possible but I wouldn't expect to see it for some time. First we need the device. Also the Source for said device/kernel. Also the source for your device your porting to. Then there has to be a developer; with both devices, has time to develop, willing to share it, has not left XDA, and is willing to support and fix any problems. Basically flip a coin. Guess heads or tails. That's your answer.
There is a posibility that we'll get the new touchwiz UI in a later update..5.1 maybe.
That is why i am asking, to me as i understand N910C is the more powerful CPU, i don't play many games so for me its my first choice, but in terms of support we all know that the exynos doesn't have any sources, so i am asking if and when the S6 comes, will i get the ported touchwiz hypotheticaly or the snapdragon version is easier way to be ported?

S4 GT-19500

Hello There i just tried to find a rom for my Gt-19500 and found the the latest supported rom was android 7.1.1 back in 2017 Yet all other S4 variants still get the latest roms can anyone tell me the technical reasons and if there any way whatsoever to find at least an android 10 rom for it?
The technical reasons? Probably nothing technical, but simply an issue of there being no developers working on the device. Unfortunately for you, this means if you want an Android 10 ROM for your device you will have to create it yourself.
I will note that 3G service is expected to be terminated in a year or two in most countries. You would be better served getting a phone with LTE capability.

thank you so much it's just that before that date it used to be all S4 variants together after that fate even TWRP stopped support for the device thanks again
It's a surprise to me that some models are still being worked on. After all the S4 is nearly a decade old now and many have gone through two or three devices since its introduction. Not to mention physically the plastic is cracking due to age; at least on my S4 it is.
It doesn't surprise me that TWRP development stopped. This device doesn't benefit from the newer features TWRP has that are geared towards the new devices. So there is little need to update.
